Audio Technica ATH-M50x are made with poor materials and don’t last!!! – We bought these Audio Technica headphones from Headphonic (www.headphones.com.au) in late 2021, and within a little over two years of light use, the padding on the ear cups began to noticeably deteriorate (see first two pics). We weren’t trying to… Read more

skimp of cheap headphones so we opted for this well reviewed Audio Technica model. Whilst they do sound good and wear comfortably for moderate periods of time, they have not lasted well and seem to be made, in part, from substandard materials. The rest of the headphones look like brand new which confirms how lightly they’ve been used (see last pic).

We’ve kept these phones in a well protected space their entire lifespan and have used them lightly and regularly (estimate average twice/week for less than half an hour each time). They have never been used outdoors or had any exposure to sun or heat, but the quality of the materials is poor and not long lasting.

Did contact the shop (Headphonic www.headphones.com.au) we bought them from about their deterioration, but have had no response.

We suspect they receive so many good reviews here because most of the reviews are for much newer sets, but we’re very unimpressed with Audio Technica’s quality and don’t recommend them unless you’re fine with paying $200 for headphones that might not last much more than 1-2 years with more typical usage. How can these relatively expensive headphones fit the Consumer Law requirements of fit for purpose and lasting anywhere near as much as would be expected for such an item?

Follow-up  · In answer to some queries: 1. yes, other parts of the set are deteriorating and I end up with plastic bits flaking off after each use. If anything, the deterioration has accelerated. Poor quality materials ime. I wouldn’t buy this brand again. 2. I’d say comfort wise (feel and fit), they’re just ok. During longer sessions, the cups get more… Read more

Amazing Studio Quality Headphones – The key word for these headphones are studio monitors. Unlike Beats or Skullcandy etc the sound signature for these headphones are very neutral and they do not emphasis anything such as the base. I personally enjoy a more neutral sound signature as I listen to a wide variety of music and do not want anything to be over emphasised. If you are into… Read more

music creation a neutral sound is also beneficial as you can hear exactly what you are producing without an artificial emphasis. The sound isolation is very good and the weight not too noticeable however I found the pressure on my ears to isolate noise fatiguing after an hour or so. I liked the detachable cord when carrying the headphones around and the mechanism to lock the cord in has never failed or worn as of ~1 year of use. I found the coiled cord really heavy but you get three different cords in the box .so that is not a problem

Pros:

Neutral, clear sound signature

Amazing sound quality at this price range

Several detachable cords

Great noise isolation

Cons:

Noise isolation is fatiguing after an hour or so

Detachable cord takes a few seconds to attach (though you could just leave it on)

Perfect if you are after realistic sound reproduction at a good price – I purchased these to listen to nature recordings. I wanted the sound to be realistic rather than calibrated for heavy base or treble. I also wanted good isolation from external noise as I use them for meditation. Closed back, over ear studio headphones in sub $200 category. Flat sound profile. Pro's Comfortable to wear for long periods… Read more

of time. Sit around the ear and the padding is soft and effective.

Good sound reproduction at low volumes which is what I need for meditation.

Excellent isolation from external noises. I put a recording of beach waves on when my neighbour mows the lawn. Very pleasant.

Realistic sound reproduction. I listen to everything from bird calls to crickets, lightening and wind in the leaves of trees. All of it sounds very real to life with these headphones and even the tiniest if noises are audible at low volumes.

Bonus - I hang them on the bed and use them as speakers at high volume so I can sleep without headphones on.

Excellent quality for sub $200 headphones. Ear pieces pivot, padding on top of the band. Comes with a carry bag and three different cords and a larger stereo plug. Fits a small head just fine. Durable I've dropped them, fallen asleep on them, been rough with the cord. No damage.

Cons

They are bulky, not sure you'd want to wear them walking around town They are designed for studio use.

They're not designed for listening to fully produced music, they still sound good listening to that but you're not going to get the kind of bass you're used to from the sound profile.

Recommended - these are great if you use headphones for noise isolation and realistic sound reproduction. Very good for meditation purposes. I also use them to take mobile calls at home. Makes it easy to hear the caller even with background noise.

Absolutely Brilliant – I purchased these headphones to replace a pair of the original series of Beats Studios. While I felt they had great sound they had begun to deteriorate, something I was very very disappointed about considering how much I paid for them, and carefully I looked after them and how rarely I used them. Having done some research I was considering the… Read more

ATH-MSR7 model, but as they were a bit more expensive and decided otherwise, weary of spending to much after the beats. I finally settled on the Audio Technica ATH-M50x. While the build materials were not quite that of the ATH-MSR7, I think the audio specs are pretty much the same. The ATH-MSR7 also came with inline mics I purchased my ATH-M50xs from PC Case Gear online for $180 + delivery.

After the audio quality of the Beats I thought I would be hard to impress again. I was very happy to be wrong. The ATH-M50x are an amazing set of headphones. I have begun to get into HD Audio as well, Jazz, Classical and even Hip Hop. While I do not have an external DAC unit or Headphone amp, listening to WAV 1536kbps and DSD64 audio files with these headphones as been absolutely brilliant. Even some of the heaviest Hip Hop base does not seem to challenge them and even improve on low quality file formats.

These headphones have reinvigorated and expanded my interest in music. Worth every dollar and more.

Amazing audio quality with great accessories – Ironically, I managed to buy these off a reviewer who was selling them. I can't imagine why he'd get rid of them though as they are amazing. This was a serious upgrade from my previous headset for me, which I primarily used for gaming. But these are purely for DJing and listening to music. However, every time I've played games with this,… Read more

especially Elite Dangerous or other games with high definition audio they really show why they are top quality.

Obviously there are more expensive AT and other headsets out there but for me, these excel. The high, mid and low are all tuned to perfection. Admittedly the volume is a little low but the other sets of Audio-Technica earbuds and headsets I also own are the same - paired with a headphone amplifier they are all beasts!

They're not wireless and that's fine for DJing from a controller and my PC. Two different cables are included - a springy cable and an extra long normal cable. There is also an adapter jack from 3.5mm to standard 6.3mm jack. All of them are gold plated and the cables are well insulated. You also get a soft bag with them for safer transport. I bought a hard container off eBay and regretted it as it would only carry the headphones and one cable. So just stick with the bag and save yourselves some cash.

Overall for the music I play and listen to - breaks, Progressive House, Trance, Melodic Techno and pure Techno - these are incredible. I was lucky to get them for $134 so half-price. But full-price they are still worth it.

So good – These headphones sound quality is great. The overall build is great. But to go further in the sound quality of these headphones is amazing it gives a cinema type vibe its very loud and there is no sound leaking. The wire doesn’t bend and the headphones are bendable so it very easily to take to travel. Show details ·  1

Great, solid headphones – Solid, fairly light, great sound, good looking. Bought this for production and DJ monitor headphones to replace the hd25's I have, because I found they were lacking in bass. The M50x are great, they go very loud, you might have to adjust a bit if coming from something else. As with any headphones, always take them for a spin in store first. Bonus points for including various cables in the box Show details

Worth every cent – I brought this pair back in July 2015 and have used it almost every single day until now. The only issue til this day is that I needed to swap out the ear cushion as the original have degraded so much over the 4+ years. The headphone is light and easy to bring on the train, bus or plane. The bass is deeper, however it does not drown out the… Read more

I would highly recommend this pair to all my friends and family looking for a headphone wihtin the 150-250 price range. (I brought these at 180 back in the days.)

Great Product for Great Price – You can find these headphones at around $200 and for that price it's pretty great. The sound quality is great for what you get, though I'm not entirely satisfied with it and I'm planning to move onto higher-quality headphones. Great general purpose headphones – I use these headphones to edit videos in a noisy open-plan office. I've also used them for monitoring audio on a film shoot. Decent – The soundstage is very good and it has great bass. You can quite easily distinguish notes and sounds from each other in a song. The difference between my old earbuds (samsung defaults) was night and day. My only critique of them is that they are tight and will make your ears sweat within an hour.  Show details

Top Quality Headphones – I honestly didn't expect much from the Audio Technica M50x headphones when I first bought them. great mid-range, the bass is subtle; not overpowered, the highs are prominent and after breaking them in for a couple days, quite comfortable to wear.

I can recommend the leather ear-cups, however I prefer velour and did replace mine. If you are using the leather you will notice a fair whack more noise isolation, but if you use velour they breathe a lot nicer. I can't notice a difference in sound quality between the two cup materials.

Top product, definitely recommend!

Outstanding Earphones – I love these headphones and dont have any issues at all with wearing them for long periods - perhaps its individual head shape but they work perfectly for me. Great sound, blocks noise and top of the crop for this price bracket – Having moved from Bose (given that they were stolen with my luggage at an airport) to this unit, they are great in sound and noise eliminating at the same time. When travelling overnight, I would put these on without music and dull the surround sound - great pickup. I would thoroughly recommend this brand and will purchase more in the future. My son does an incredible amount of research and these were also his number 1 pick.  Show details

Light, Comfortable and Good Sound – The title says it all. These are light-weight enough that they are not too oppressive. They feel soft and comfortable on the ears.
