Disappointing – I was very disappointed when I tried to claim on our domestic travel insurance for a holiday that was cancelled because of the COVID-19 outbreak. Budget Direct's PDS clearly states that they would cover us in the event of an epidemic. They are not true to their word. Show details

travel insurance claim (Due to bush fires) declined because I departed on my trip prior to the bush fires occurring – I purchased domestic travel insurance for a three week trip 23rd Dec - 11 Jan throughout QLD, VIC and SA. declined because and I quote “In this instance as you had departed from your home prior to cancelling the Kangaroo Island portion of your trip, the claimed cost falls outside the scope of coverage provided by the policy.“

How on earth is this possible? Now where in the policy can I find a clause that says cancellation must take place prior to departing from your home on the policy commencement date. I’m absolutely flabbergasted and have escalated this further however can anyone shed any light or insight on how this is possible?

Worthless policy – Yes its in the fine print but a 24 hour delay in my flight and only just being able to make a wedding with a three year old is not good enough to trigger insurance to help us. Just a waste of money Show details

Avoid at all Costs - Policy has no practical real world value – At the beginning, when they take your money, it is all sunshine and circuses but as soon as you make a claim the dark clouds roll in. Don't be fooled by the PDS, it has a couple of pages on what is covered by the insurance then scattered throughout the numerous pages in the rest of the document what is not. everything you thought was covered in the beginning is excluded by the time you get to the end. Even common reasons such as taking prescribed medication or seeing your GP before taking out the insurance can be used as reasons to reject a claim.

I made claim after my father died while I was on a domestic trip. Even before I had supplied all the requested paperwork my claim was rejected. That's right they didn't bother waiting to get all the facts, my claim was rejected before they had all the information. Then trying to get information from Budget Direct (actually Allianz who handle the claims) was almost impossible.

Trying to negotiate the review process was appalling. They don't reply to emails, they fail to meet their own service standards, they only return calls once a week on a Friday afternoon so if you miss them that is it for at least 7 days. When you call them you are shunted though three layers of service staff only to be told they will get back to you with a letter 'next week'.

So keep away from Budget Direct, it is simply not worth your money to buy insurance from them.

Cheapest and covers all my needs – Good value and cheapest when comparing all required cover aspects. Will only be used in December. Has not yet been necessary to make any claims and hopefully none will be. Show details ·  1

Best on offer – The offer was good value, this is the first time we have used budget, it will not be the last as we intend to do more traveling in the coming years, cruising, train trips, buses etc. As we increase in years we need to see as much as we can. Show details ·  1

Great for basic domestic travel insurance – Very easy and simple to quote and buy. I was after basic cover so this was perfect for my quick family domestic holiday (there is probably more comprehensive cover but I wasn't looking for that).
