You get a lot of (used) car for your money – I have a 2010 Citroën C5 (X7) Comfort, 2-litre turbo diesel with 6speed auto. I got the one with hydraulic suspension, as others have said, it is not a real Citroën without it. Given that most cars on this site rate 4star or better overall anyway, to give this car 5 stars is not statistically significant, but that won’t stop me. I have had only… Read more

French cars my whole life, mainly Peugeots, thought I would try the sister car. Never bought a new car, and never will. Sorry dealers! I bought this car at 6 years old with 65 000km, for $15k. That is about 30k depreciation in 6 years. You’re laughing if you get a good one second hand, which I did. Have put 50k km on it in 3 years, and had not a single thing go wrong with it, save for a new battery, original Varta lasted 7 years. This model has the later 120kw engine and plenty of torque, great for towing a trailer, enough power for almost all situations. It is smooth, quiet (the Exclusive is even quieter with laminated side windows), capacious, and very frugal. Sydney to Melbourne without trying reads 5.2, but in reality 5.7. Trying, I got 4.8. Around town is still in the 7s. Have seen more than 1100km on the tankful more than once. The car will easily peel off an interstate trip, in fact that is why I got it. Has even been to the snow, but you do need a thin snow chain because of the suspension. The suspension comes in handy, I lower it to help granma get in and out. It has a sport setting, and it is self-levelling, so no matter the load in the car or trailer, it is always level. The split rear seats fold flat, giving a huge cargo area. It is long enough to sleep in, don’t ask me how I know. The gearbox is Aisin, with sports and snow mode, and I do use it in manual occasionally, like for towing. The dash has both analog and digital speedo, which comes in very handy, the fixed steering hub took 5 seconds to get used to, don’t even notice it now. Service costs are average or a bit above, none of this fixed-price stuff, but not excessive. Does not chew thru cam belts or brake pads and disks, nor tyres for that matter, although those are more a function of how one drives. Things I don’t like, which is a common thread, are the lack of rear seat leg room, and to a certain extent, headroom. The one cup holder is in the centre console and next to useless. There is a turbo lag which you don’t notice in normal driving, ironically it is only when you need the acceleration that you are aware of the lack of initial acceleration. It does help to use a specialist mechanic, and for any information there are always French car websites and the Citroën Car Club in your state. For anyone who has the anti-French mentality about these cars, go and read the negative reviews of the Holden Commodore.

One Damn Fine Car – Some brief background is necessary here: Five years ago I had cause top take myself, three people and a small dog from Sydney to Kangaroo Island and back to visit relatives. We did it in a Subaru WRX hatch with a roof pod added to help cope with all our luggage. The car did fine although we were a bit cramped. Fast forward two years and its… Read more

time to do the same trip all over again. But this time I want to do it in something roomier with more internal storage so that no roof-top luggage pod is needed. At the same time I have a long-term fascination with Citroens stemming back to school days when one of my teachers had a DS19 (and later a DS21).

And so a plan is hatched: Buy a second-hand C5 Estate with hydraulic suspension (its not a *real* Citroen unless it has that), take it to Kangaroo Island and back and sell it upon return. Sure, I'll drop around $1000 on the car but I'd pay the same to hire a car for a month. And I get to cross "Citroen experience" off my bucket list.

Only one problem with the plan: By the time I got back to Sydney I had come to like the car so much I couldn't bear to part with it. And now its two years later and I *still* have the Citroen. (To be fair,I still have the WRX too. Same problem: I can't bear to let it go.)

So what do I like most about the Citroen? A lot of things. The fixed hub steering wheel setup with its big, easily-found control buttons is brilliant as is the dashboard set-up with its landscape-style digital display. A touring range of more than 1000km and country fuel economy figures of between 5.8 to 6.6 lites per '000kn (depending on cruising speed) are not to be sneezed at either.

And then there's that hydraulic suspension. To be honest; watching the car pump itself up to the correct ride height as I start it up still hasn't got old. And the ride - unlike anything else in the motoring world. Wonderfully comfortable but not for those prone to car sickness.

The car's 2.0 liter diesel engine is well mated to its six-speed automatic gearbox and it rarely get caught between gears. It has good acceleration from a standing start - good enough to be useful in city traffic - but lacks the WRX's high speed punch when trying to overtake at speed.

Dislikes - drive it wrong and the car will help you redefine the phrase "turbo lag." And there can be a mild 'jolt' from the automatic transmission when moving off from stationary. But that's the worst of it. Other quibbles: the center screen is polarized the wrong way, rendering it unreadable to anyone wearing polarized sunglasses. And the front cup-holder (note the singular) is almost inaccessible. But that's it.

The myriad of small cubbyholes I originally wrote off as too small to be useful have since all been pressed into use. For example: one turns out to be a good size and shape for my mobile phone. Another is now home to the phone's associated cables.

Apart from a minor problem with one of the back doors (it needed a new winder switch ) and the need to replace worn suspension bushes at the next service (not unreasonable after 10 years and 130,000 km), the car has been a model of reliability.

The interior is wearing better than that of the Subaru (which is of the same vintage) but the paint is not. It still looks deep and lustrous, but it is brittle and scratches easily.

That aside, the Citroen is a wonderful car that somehow makes me feel special every time I drive it. And its high rate of depreciation means you can now get a genuine luxurious European thoroughbred at a bargain price.

An excellent car ! – I bought a 10 year old 2002 C5 2 litre diesel, second hand with 205,000 klm on the clock. I have never bought a car with so many K's on the clock before, but being a diesel I thought it worthwhile, and it was. I've done another 100,000 k in it ! I have had to repair the automatic 'clutch' mechanism at 250,000 k which I really can't complain about,… Read more

but other than that just regular maintenance. It's so versatile with the hatchback boot combined with fold down seats and the items I've been able to carry have surprised everyone ! IT still looks good. The design hasn't really aged much at all. It's comfortable to drive and economic at about 6.5l/100k. I am now looking to buy or trade-in for a newer C5, but the hatchback version finished in 2008 (I think). IT's been a great car.

Exceptional and a couple of easy to fix minor niggles but nothing let me down – Overall a nice comfortable and relaxing car which inevitably will change your driving style over time in a good way (very calming). and will climb up suprisingly steep grades with no effort in low prm. Minor issues ive had is 1. Fuse box issues were not uncommon in early cars of this version (mine was one) and had to buy one overseas but 10 minutes work and inexpensive (for what it is), although in australia they want 4x the price for one. 2. My Front lower control arm bushings failed at about 100,000km, a company called Siberian Bushings sell polyurethane replacements (which im using and am pleasantlysuprised i.e. no noticable ride worsening while handling that little bit sharper). Would i buy another c5? yeh but im keeping this one for 300,000km+

Brilliant car – This is my second C5 which has now done 100 000 km. I do a lot of country driving and it is extraordinarily comfortable and quiet on most road surfaces, but tyre noise on some bitumen surfaces is too loud. 5.4 litres/100 km. I am looking forward to the NEW C5 due in 2019.

The Citroens have been the cheapest cars to run I have ever owned, servicing costs are low, brake rotors and pads are similar to other vehicles I have owned. I was speaking with an RACV technician the other day, He has not been called out ever to a Citroen C5, apart from changing tyres. He said they are Bullet Proof. From my experience and having covered more that 250km in the 2 Citroens, I would agree,

Nothing bad to say – My 2012 3L twin turbo HDi is nudging 190,000km now. At these kilometres it will soon be the longest I've ever kept a car and I've no thoughts of changing it. It's still a fantastic car and a joy to drive. I travel almost 1,000km each week, about a third of that is metro, the rest is highway. It absolutely eats highways and hills for breakfast… Read more

a great car – This is a very comfortable car to ride in. It handles very well in all conditions and irons out most road bumps. This is a very reliable car (I'm in my third one) and the only major problem I have had is the battery failed in the latest two cars within two years of purchase, (bought new). The first was T-boned by a red light runner and the second I traded after six year to my current vehicle. The major downer with me is the brake pad dust quickly accumulates on the wheels.

looking we came across a c5 2.0 diesel, low, low kms and at a price that no other european car could come close too. So here is the run down.

Superb comfortable drive when compared to my Australian built company car.

Extremely fuel efficient 7.2 kms per 100kms, my company car run 12km per 100kms

Smooth transmission.

Extremely comfortable seats with multiple adjustments.

Easy to use instrument panel

Beautiful exterior styling

Plenty of power for a family vehicle.

The negatives

Lack of drink holders

Head room for tall passenger in rear is limited.

Fixed centre steering forces you to use your hands correctly on the wheel.

Both citroens I have purchased have had low kms and been great value as second hand vehicles, what other European car

With this level of appointment can you buy for $16k with 50000 kms on the clock. Citroen are totally underrated cars in Australia.

I have had 2 citroens and can say that I have been very, very happy with both vehicles.

Faith in Citroen restored after bad experience with 1982 CX – Bought my 2011 C5 Tourer with 43000km on it from Wodonga Car World in October 2014. It has now done 63000km. I have had no mechanical problems with it. The 60000km service cost $ 626. The dealer seems to be pretty good, and gave me a loaner car while mine was being serviced. replaced a 2009 Benz C220 CDI wagon. The Benz had better steering feel and slightly better handling, but the C5 seats, ride comfort, fuel use, and space for driver's feet are all much better. No rattles, a few plastic squeaks. I like the full-size spare too. Paintwork and leather are holding up very well. The irregular shaped door pockets are irritating, as is the small glovebox and cup holder under the centre armrest. On paper the 2 litre diesel engine seemed too small for the size of the C5, but in practice it's never short of power, and the auto gearbox works really well with it. I've previously owned an ID19 (excellent) and CX2400 (bought secondhand and not a happy experience as it had not been serviced by Citroen and cost a lot in remedial work - be warned!) The previous Citroens rode better but didn't handle as well as my current one. The C5's odd steering feel is the worst feature but I can happily live with that for the excellence of the rest of the package. 21/3/16 update - 70000km service cost was $318. 4/8/16 update - 80000km big service at Wodonga cost $775, still zero problems. now averaging 5.8 l/100km. driving. I do 30,000 kms a year plus.

The car is quite lively and while the diesel clatters at idle you do not notice it while driving. Electrics are all working reliably but I do get false warnings about rear seat belts not being done up and the fuel cap not being secure. Paint is still very good and the leather is proving extremely durable. The car is roomy and, although the car looks like a sedan, it has a hatchback which is really versatile when you need to carry something long.

I thought the front seat arm rests were silly when I bought the car but now I appreciate them. It is nice to be able to lower the car's ride height at speed at the touch of a button and to raise it when you are going into a difficult driveway. But I rarely use the feature as the ride is very comfortable and it corners nimbly in the standard setting. I have not tried to change a wheel using the ride height adjuster yet, touch wood.

I am surprised to find no cup holders for the front in a well designed car which boasts front and rear parking assist, full electrics, cruise control, a great stereo, automatic side mirrors and lots of other luxury features. The C5 is a very good car for someone who wants to travel comfortably and economically without compromising on luxury or personal safety. My son says it looks like a girl's car, which in an age where all cars look the same, is probably not a bad thing.

This car has a particulate filter which burns off the diesel particles so that the emissions are cleaner. The liquid additive that helps the burning process in this filter needs replacing around 150 thousand kilometres. It is very expensive. Budget $1000 for that. The engine light will come on when it needs replacing. If the particulate filter itself needs replacing then budget another $1000. Luxury, economy, versatility, comfort, safety, reliability Parts are reasonable but often have to come ex-Eastern States

for (Bluetooth, GPS, electric heated seats, electric tailgate etc etc). I previously had a 2008 Volvo CX 70 which was an excellent car but the only thing it had which I consider was superior to the C5 was all wheel drive. Other than that I think the C5 is the equal of the Volvo and about $25000 cheaper for a new one. The C5 has as much room in the front seat area and the rear luggage compartment but is a bit less roomy in the rear passenger area. I looked at a new Volvo CX 70, a new Mercedes 200 wagon, a Passat wagon and a Subaru Outback before settling on the Citroen. Its value for money combined with a 6 year warranty, capped servicing costs, 6 year road assistance I think make up for what I expect to be a lower resale value than certainly I might expect from the Subaru or the Mercedes, but on the other hand I am likely to keep it for 3/4 years to 100/120,000 k and a few thousand less at that point will not be significant taking into account its purchase price of $48,000. It is still early days so I have no comment on servicing although the dealer was most efficient at the time of the first free service at 3000k. even on the course chip bitumen Australian road makers are so fond of. My model does not have the laminated side windows, so there is a bit of wind noise around the side mirrors at speed.

The front seats are very comfortable with a lot of adjustment available and together with tilt and reach adjustment of the steering column makes it easy to get the driving position just right (and at 187cm I find that is not so easy in most cars I have driven).

Most of my driving is on the freeway, and during my time with the car I have averaged just under 6 litres per 100 km. Although I have noticed that in around town driving that number increases quite quickly to 8 or 9.

Problems in Suspension System – I pursued Citroen C5 from 1 month only, 1.6 thp Model 2012. After 35 years of a German cars, I decided to own French one. And now I feel that I took a wrong decision. I feel with a strong Vibrations when I reach to 130 KM till 170 KM, and I went to technical service center, they replaced : 1- 2 copplens in the suspension system. 2- they… Read more

replaced the Motor Holders.

3- they adjust the tyres and trim's.

The result is more vibrations.

Never see this problems in the German cars.

And now I decided to sell it.

Strong Vibrations in Mid & high speeds.

Excellent – We looked at the C5 and the Subaru Liberty wagon, and this won hands down in the same price range, as much for the features as for the styling and the fact it's a bit different. The leather interior is light and airy but doesn't show dirt. It's been a brilliant touring car over the last 18 months. Really comfortable on long drives, and amazing… Read more

fuel economy with diesel (up to 1,000km on a 66 litre tank). Automatic everything. Super-smooth ride and gear changes on the automatic transmission. Estate cargo area holds two suitcases, two sets of golf clubs and several boxes of wine even with the security blind in place. The net cargo barrier is brilliantly flexible. Child seat restraints immediately behind the back seats, not in the roof. Auto windscreen wipers are a little hit or miss. The net cargo barrier needs two people to put up. Ours has had some rear brake squeaking, which can be a bit loud at times - will get it fixed at the next service.

Good – It is a car that easily get people to hate or love. It is definitely very comfortable. I can drive this car between Melbourne and Sydney without feeling tired. It is an alternative to German cars. Recent models have better styling as well. Surprisingly well equipped for its price. It is great as a family or touring car. Most of the issues… Read more

Owned 2 c5's - – 1st i had a 2003 v6 with 95,000km beige part of the dash got sticky from sun exposure. no way to fix it auto gearbox was rough on change down when slowing the car auto lights would not turn off so always driving with the lights on Drinks holders are too small. most drinks fall over and end up on the floor off the car. who designed these?? … Read more

I sold it as I wanted a cheaper car to run so i got a 2003 4 cylinder petrol with 143,000km

same problem with the beige part of the dash getting sticky. very annoying

slight rattle from the steering when going over some bumps. discovered its a known problem with the steering column

Main issue is the auto gearbox started slipping badly between 1st and 2nd change so started getting prices for rebuilds/used gearboxes. seems alot of people are having failures on the 4 cylinder gearboxes with the valve body usually being the problem. I was quoted $1800 to get the valve body replaced or $4000 to get the gear box rebuilt but ended up getting a used 48,000km engine and box for $2200 fitted. my old engine was still perfect but decided to get the low km engine fitted as it was no extra cost. I still drive the 4 cylinder c5 but worry about the gearbox failing again

Again the drinks holders are too small. This almost stopped me buying another C5

Most other issues are wear and tear. nice leather seats, quiet on long drives bad gearboxes , sticky dashes ,
