Daikin Alira X Series

Be warned - anyone sensitive to high pitched electrical whine/hissing noises, or installing in a quiet home/office environment, will find the Alira X range very frustrating to live with. It seems to be a design or manufacturing fault which cannot be rectified. Highly suggest looking at other brands if you can. Apart from this design flaw, the unit… Read more
cools and heats well. More info below.
We got 3x 2.5kw Daikin Alira X units installed at our home. We opted for the Alira X units as the more "premium" option vs. other brands. However, when the indoor unit is running, there is a constant electrical whine - a high pitched noise that gets louder as the fan level is increased. Given I installed it in bedrooms and my home office (which are quiet environments), the noise is very noticeable and results in breaking focus/ear irritation.
Since noticing this issue (which occurs on all 3 of our units including a unit that Daikin tried to fix), I have tried to replicate the issue with other brands. The Actron in our living area does not do this, and other models in hotels/other houses do not have the same issue. I can only replicate it on our Alira X units.
I tried to measure the frequency and it seems to land in the 4-6khz range (example noise: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cx1VQISKvhc).
It seems to be related to the electrical componentry that powers the main fan, as the noise gets markedly worse when increasing the fan level.
Other minor issues include recurring rattling/vibrating on the housing which is resolved by a quick tap to the side of the indoor unit, until it recurs.
Disappointing – Overpriced , ugly, never gets the room temp to set temp, never stops blasting, compressor very loud and whiny, feel sorry for my neighbours, none of the settings make sense, after sales support terrible! Should have got a Hisense does the same for less Show details

Effective but ugly – My Daikin Alira X, it’s easy to set and leave and works well, however it’s so bulky and quite ugly. I remember Daikin used to be very streamline and classic, this Daikin sits in my wall like a big ugly plastic box. What happened to those beautiful streamlined designer looks of the old Daikin air conditioner.
A great little unit that works well – I love my Alira X, but I wouldn't say I like the app. I don't like that you must be attached to the same network for the app to work. This means I can't turn the air conditioner on if I am away from the house and have it cool when I get home. Since I am not connected to the home wifi-network the air conditioner is connected to. So loud – It definately cools a large room but then it needs to be turned off if you want to hear the TV or have a conversation. If you are in front of it, you'll be hit with freezing, gale force winds. Show details

Makes a world of difference! – We've had this unit (FTXM71W - 7.1kW cooling, 8kW heating) for about three weeks (during Sydney winter) and love it. Quite and generates a massive amount of head with pretty low power consumption and is reasonably quiet (with the fan on fairly low). Our house is an open double story with 8m high cathedral ceilings and it all gets heated in no time at all. Very happy with the unit and installation. Show details · 1
