No stars – Wouldn't waste my $ on Deck Doc. Had my deck professionally sanded back completely, went grey in a few months, but by this time it was winter, was re oiled again when weather permitted, is now grey except for where it was covered by b/q & outdoor setting. Now can't use other water base product, have to stick to oil base Show details
just not good enough – I was using this product for so long ,as finish is just beautiful!! But unfortunately they have now lost me. its only one reason, it just doesn't last! The problem is In a 12mth period I am had t oil it ever 3mths. why? it started to dry out at around the 10 to 12 week period and it looks terrible!! sun all year round) While oiling a deck is a labour of luv! surely you dont want me to do this 4 times a year??? JUst so you know I tried Cabbots, intergraine and Silken, no favorite here, they all lasted 6 to 8mths in the sun and held their look look twice as long!! No favorites just the true facts..
anyhow I have a large 10litres of Deck Doc Premium Decking Oil Tin, which I am now using on furniture which not exposed to the sun and its great( but it take me a long time to get through this tin i have in my shed!! Its a waste of money!!
Sorry guys 3yrs as a customers & over 3 x 10litr tins I am done!!
Disappointed – I used Deck Doc on multiple decks and was so impressed when first applied. It looked brilliant. After a few months it turned black and looked like a 10 year old untreated deck. I cleaned and reapplied again and again and unfortunately was never the same. I was very disappointed in this product ( and the service from the owners). Reading these… Read more
reviews, there is obviously a problem. In the open the product lacks durability but performs better under cover. I would have to clean and reapply every three months in the harsh Arid climate I am in. Totally unsuited. I think this product is good in mild climate when the deck is undercover. Does not like sunlight. What happens to Lanolin in sunlight????? They should tel you this when you buy the product. In sunlight it is useless..
5 Year Old Deck and Still Comes up like new – We built a 65m2 deck from mixed eucalypt Harwood some 5 years ago. Before construction I researched the available deck coating and material options. You either use a manufactured synthetic wood product and forget about coatings altogether, or accept a bi-annual re-coat will be needed. So there is your first decision, synthetic or natural. commercial products you can buy from a shop are actually paints. They work like a plaint, they cover the surface of the wood and attach to the surface like a paint. They may have 'oil' written on them but that is not what is left on the wood, that is what the carrier of the paint is that will evaporate off to leave behind the paint on the surface of the wood. Some contain varying amounts of gloss varnish coatings and pigments that etch into the wood. Read the clean up label, most specify to use turpentine~! Over time, these paints deteriorate or if not, will fade and subsequent layers will begin to cover the wood grain patterns that you wanted to keep in the first place. DeckDoc does not do any of this. When you open Deck Doc you can smell the lanolin straight away. This is a natural protective oil that is absorbed into the wood grain. There are resin hardeners within the product that will give an amount of longevity to the product but it is biodegradable. So DeckDoc works in a different way to all other products. As it ages, it will alter its appearance according to its environment. Our deck gets hit with the sun most of the morning into midday, with one part in the sun all day long. Northern NSW location, so also gets hit with salt spray and sugar cane burn off ash at times. The timber begins to darken and lose its grain after about 6-8 months but water will still bead on the surface. This stuff literally tells you when to re-coat~! Either when you don't like the look any more, or the water beading gets patchy. Apply the DeckDoc stripper, also environmentally friendly, follow the instructions and the old coating will be removed. It can get messy but simply wash it off with plenty of water. I use a low power water blaster, not too close or you will lift the grain of the timber. Let it dry completely. The timber now looks completely stripped and white. Check the weather, like any coating, its going to be affected if rain hits before it cures~! Now, a word on application. You will get the hang of it fairly fast, but too much and it will leave a sticky coating, this can be rubbed down with an old towel but is adding work for no reason. Thin even coats and leave the towel for any overlap parts before it dries if there is a line. I bought a second hand floor polishing machine with a brush attachment and polishing pad, just makes the whole job a lot faster and easier. You can also add a sanding mesh to these machines if your boards are starting to cup and sand the edges off. All in all, this is one of the best and easiest products on the market. We can now buy it local too which is great as it saves on transport costs.
Black spots on spotted gum – The black spots are caused by iron contamination. Google iron contamination to find out how this occurs in timber. Iron contamination reacts when subjected to water. I have seen these black spots in brand new timber. You would have to clean the timber with oxalic acids to rectify the problem. I found the people from Deck Doc very helpful in… Read more
explaining my problem with black spots appearing in my deck. After cleaning them off I am satisfied with the product as it maintains the timbers natural colour. I just clean & oil once a year
Hopeless, I am so sorry I was talked into using this product! – I used Deck Doc on a new spotted gum deck on a new home. I bought all the application pads etc and followed all instructions to the letter. I was away for three months came home to find that the area of decking exposed to the weather was grey with black spots! I called the owners of the company and their first question was "Has it been… Read more
raining?"!!! Not an appropriate question for a product that is supposed to protect the timber from the elements. The area of the deck undercover was fine.
I am so disappointed in this product which came full of promise. Now, what should have been a lovely outdoor deck entered from the lounge sliding window is a greying black spotted mess!
I used Cue deck on another deck and its is fantastic so far. I shall use it on this deck once this Deck Doc mess has been sorted out.
I would NEVER use Deck Doc again!!! EVER!
Exceeded Expectations so far – Deck doc was recommended by a local timber merchant over cutek which my carpenter had suggested (they sell both). i was a bit worried by the negative reviews, but decided to go ahead and give it a go anyway. I used it to oil spotted gum shiplap cladding and decking, spotted gum posts and kd hardwood beams. It brought out the colour and grain in… Read more
the timber very nicely, and looks just as good 2 1/2 months later with no signs of the timber greying (or going black as some have reported).
Application was simple with a lambswool pad, followed by a scourer to work the oil into the grain.
I suspect that those who were unhappy with the result they achieved, may have had unclean timber to start with or perhaps more likely, applied too much oil so that it didn't dry properly and then collected dust and dirt.
The key I think, is to make sure a minimum amount of oil is applied by keeping the lambswool pad just moist enough; definitely not soaked. Also, I think the weather may make a difference too. Choose a warm, sunny day with some breeze so that the oil can dry on the surface fairly quickly.
I am rapt with the result after one application and would highly recommend deck doc premium decking oil to protect and beautify natural timber.
Very satisfied user and re seller of Deck-doc products – I have used and sold deck-doc oils for approximately 15 years with good results. I use the H/D outdoor oil in the factory for coating timber end grain and a good number of my customers purchase and re purchase this oil for coating and maintaining the products they buy from us. I have also used the decking oil on hardwood decks with great success.… Read more
Large ironbark posts oiled with deck-doc at the time of installation and that had been then neglected and had weathered off, were restored to almost full colour with an application of the same product.
Applied correctly you can finish with a really mellow oiled appearance on your deck even after many years of service. Just like a wool shed floor.
As is the case with most products, the best results are obtained by carefully following instructions.
I look forward to continuing to use the deck-doc oils.
Best Product I Have Used For Many Years ! – I am 62 years of age, over the years & there has been plenty, I have used many different products on many different decks ! I came across Deck-Doc at Mitre 10, being a Lanolin based oil, I should give this stuff a go. I built a new deck about five years ago out the front of my house, it faces north, so it gets all the sun during the year, not to… Read more
mention the rain, wind & salt air.
I applied this oil hesitantly to my new deck, by the way, I rang the manufacturer to make sure I understood the procedure. He advised me to make sure the deck was very clean & warned me about applying too much oil, the timber can only absorb so much & then it becomes sticky. His other advise was to follow the instructions to the letter & if I wanted there was a video or something to look at.
Well, after all that, I am still using this Deck-Doc oil five years on & my deck looks amazing, the colors & grain of the timber jump right at you as if the deck was made yesterday. I oiled my deck again, not long back. I am very diligent with the maintenance of my deck, when it gets dirty I clean it. I used to clean it with hot water & detergent, but the Deck-Doc Deck Cleaner is the only way to fly. I have even used this cleaner on my pavers out the back, which faces south & never sees the sun, as you can imagine it was very dirty & moldy. They cleaned up a real treat ! I have been using it to clean other bits & pieces around the house.
I have a garden bed under my deck, both the oil & cleaner have not killed anything over the past five years.
As you can see, I am absolutely rapted with this oil, unlike others that go yellow, even orange & crack up all over the place, & that is a real chore to remedy. The trick I found is to keep on top of the maintenance & your deck will always look like mine, AMAZING ! By the way, I live on the Bellarine Peninsula, hence the harsh weather. I LOVE THIS OIL, SO GET ON TO IT !
Proper Protection for My Outdoor Furniture – Deck-Doc the timber oil protection, very happy with the results for this product. It was easy to apply and my outdoor furniture came up a treat. Whew, I am very pleased that my expensive outdoor furniture looks good and is well protected. I was pleased with the exta mile Rob and Rinda went to, explaining exactly what I had to do, and they were… Read more
very patient with my pesty questions.
Glad to know you can get a good quality product and sold to you by people who really know what they are talking about.

Excellent product! Would never use anything else – I've been using Deck Doc Premium Decking Oil on my merbau deck for over 10 years now and the deck still looks as good as the day it was built! I always clean the deck first, then I apply the oil (being careful to follow the instructions) and I am always amazed at how good the deck looks, even after all this time! I gently scour the wood after… Read more
applying the oil to help it absorb, and wipe off any excess. I've never had any trouble with the timber going sticky, but I'm always careful not to over-apply. A fantastic product that I would highly recommend, and I know that my deck is protected and will not rot or decay, unlike other products out there. Plus, the staff are always friendly and helpful, and more than willing to explain the process and answer any questions I have. Great product from a great local business.
Do not use!!! Waste of money! – This product doesn't dry (remains sticky) goes mouldy and black plus is sold by a husband and wife with the worst customer service I have ever come across! You will read multiple reviews with similar outcomes and we've since spoken to many specialists in the area who shake their head at deck doc's products (we just wish we'd had this advice before… Read more
trying to support local!) our new deck required a full professional sand and a completely different product. You've been warned DON'T BUY OR USE DECK DOC!!! (PS - they'll try and blame helicopters or trains for the flaws in their product - the only helicopters or trains near our home come out of our children's toy box!)
Happy with this very good product – This is the second time I've applied DeckDoc to our decking and I'm happy to keep using it. Forget the water based 'coating' finishes, a good oil is best. I've also used some of the other well known oil finishes in the past but I'm a total convert with DeckDoc - one coat, easy application and I don't feel like I need a gas mask when applying it. … Read more
Wait until there are several warm/hot days coming up. Clean the deck properly using either their deck cleaning powder or an off-the-shelf oxygen cleaner (Napisan, etc), make sure it's completely dry and then follow the application instructions. Make sure you remove any excess oil using a rag as you go. A new deck will require a lighter amount of oil than an established one.
Exposed timber will go grey before the annual re-coat is due but is that really the end of the world? It's an outdoor timber deck. It will eventually need replacing. The oil just helps prolong its life.

Know better, choose better.
This stuff is great – I have been using Deck Doc on my deck and fence for three years now. The first time I used it my deck when sticky, I called to complain. They explained how to use there oil. I have been using it for three years and it great I have just cleaned and re-oiled me deck and it looks like a new deck again.
Did not cope in the Queensland sun – Spent 3 weeks sanding back our timber deck as per instructions. When first applied the timber looked fantastic. Water even beaded on the timber like a polished car. Within 6 months the timber exposed to sun went black. No other decking oil had ever done that. Very expensive for poor result. The best thing was the website marketing which… Read more
sucked me in. I honestly believe decking oil is like engine oil. As long as you re-apply every 6 months with a light coat the timber will last.
Worst product ever – Waste of money! Applied to a very expensive new deck to the instructions and within 3 weeks looks like my deck is 10 years old and never treated! Can't cope under direct sunlight and tacky if you put too much on the railing! Initially looked fantastic but within 2 weeks started to dull by week three looked like it has never been treated and a old deck. Really disappointed Guy was nice we bought it off quick delivery
This stuff is rubbish – We used Deck Doc - the website purported that this product did it all. How wrong it was. In less than 3 months our deck was grey and awful. We followed the instructions carefully and have just spent the whole of our Easter weekend sanding and spent more than $500.00 to fix. Never again!!! Must be a reason the big chains don't stock it. careful - we felt misled by their website.
Didn't stand up to the harsh Australian climate at all!!!!
no good - don/t touch it! – Have applied this 4 times in 3 years as per the DVD. Goes black within 6 weeks. It's a waste of money and more importantly. The supplier no longer stocks due to the high number of complaints. It's a pity because I was trying to support a locally made Australian product and company. Nothing Read above
Over 2 years using it and still going strong – I had my merbau deck installed October 2010 and had Deck Doc oil highly recommended to me by the timber supplier. Not having any experience with oiling decks I decided to go with the recommendation and thought it worthwhile to share my experience with it now after 2 years. Firstly, follow the instructions carefully and you can't go wrong. … Read more · 2
There are excellent instructional videos on their website which make it easier and also when I had a question and phoned them directly the staff were able to answer my queries without any problem and seemed to have a very good understanding of their product and it's use. Very easy to apply and the best thing is that it only needs a 1 coat application thus you only need a few hours to do the job. My deck is mostly under cover with about a quarter being exposed to the weather and sunlight.
I have found that I need to re-oil every 6 months and I do a thorough clean every 12 months. I have learnt that you only need a thin application to get the best result. My original 4 litre tin has lasted the 4-5 coats over the past 2 years. When I went to purchase another tin last month I saw that they now have a tinted oil and decided to give this a go as some of my exposed boards were looking a little weathered. I have now just oiled the deck with this new tinted oil and can say I think it is actually better than the original product and has enhanced the appearance of the merbau even more. Overall I would highly recommend this product. Only 1 coat required, quick/easy application and long lasting, looks great. Be careful not to over apply as it can become tacky - follow the instructions carefully and all is okay. Can be hard to find in hardware/paint stores.
Works just fine – Just built a new house and used a tinted tin of this Deck-Doc product on my new fence and the garden edging. It works fabulously well. It does what it is claimed to do. We’ve had a really wet Winter in Victoria this year and the water does bead off the timber. It’s only the first season with the product. I’ll be interested to see how the timber… Read more
holds up over a few years of wet Winters and hot Summers. I too encountered the “tacky to the touch” result. This was from applying too much of it and expecting it to dry. Some kero on a rag and a bit of rubbing cleaned the excess off the few pickets that I had been over-zealous with. This product does not dry. It is an oil. Once it soaks into the wood it’s not going to go any further and you need to clean off any excess. Less is better with this stuff. It’s been up a few months now and still looks great. Goes on easily. The tinted product gave a really nice finish and effect on the timber. The oil does penetrate the timber. It does repel water. Take care not to over-apply. If you do, remove the excess or it will go tacky. Best to leave it for a few days before you use the timber...which is OK if you're not in a hurry to get the job done.
Warning- Do Not Buy! – I had a spotted gum deck built. The builder suggested Fest Watson decking oil. I decided to do some research, found this Deck - Doc oil called Top Deck 'Premium' decking oil. Biggest mistake of my life. I followed the instructions to the letter and even rang them beforehand to make sure I got the application instructions correct. Wow!! My very… Read more
expensive deck was tacky to touch and then went black. $2000 later after a complete resand and using Fest Watson's oil it looks like it should have in the first place. Don't get stung! use Feast Watson. This is a cheap product at a premium price point. NOTHING, maybe the smell. It wrecked my newly built spotted gum deck. I have had three tradesmen look at this product and what it has done. All of them have said it it rubbish and the result speaks for itself. Especially now I have compared it with another product.
