Advertising Sucked Me In Once Only; Never Again – Let me start by saying I am a qualified Engineer. I should have reported this Dyson many years ago. Better late than never. Just like new cars, this Dyson was very good for the first 2-3 years. I was always suspicious re the flimsy plastic lasting, but I relented, knowing theres 1001 different plastics and I'm no Plastics Engineer. My suspicions were correct. They had the temerity to assume such FLIMSY construction would last. Then the Motor in the Floor Head decided to jam: brass segment separated from its commutator! Not even a lowly-perceived Camira or Lada Niva Starter Motor suffered such rubbish! I repaired it after calling the so called Service Centre which had the run-around protocols of a mealy mouthed politician, and wanted me to travel across the globe and then leave it with them for any amount of time that suited them in terms of weeks, and no guarantee that there would be any warranty, after pre-sales were adamant that both Electric Motors were warranted for life; without declaring WHOSE life they were referring to. (My worker bees live 6weeks)

My wife and I are very respectful of machinery, which may be why our machines last as long as they do. My 1957 Holden first car purchased used in 1967 is still as new. My Ford 1978 first brand new car is still like new. My wifes Toyota Prado purchased new in 2001 is still like brand new....... My $5 Transistor Radio from 3o years ago is still like new and gets used 8 hours 365 d/yr! .... Our 2 Elec Tooth Brushes are over 10 y/o after I learned to deep-freeze them once over-night when they appeared to "die", and charge them ONLY 3-4 hours before bed-time, instead of 24/7 which "cooks" the battery which miraculously "bounced back". But theres no amount of care that can help unmitigated JUNK, much like new cars which are also perfect for the first few years(if you didn't buy a lemon).............. NEVER AGAIN will Dyson insult me !

We will save our hard earned money and buy the most economical Vacuum from now on, much like the Ryobi Industrial wet/dry Vacuum I purchased OVER 20 years ago for the workshop where it was punished by staff EVERY day till it recently died mainly because lazy staff refused to empty it and caused undue stress to elec motor.

Now the "whistling" has started and found to be flimsy design INTERNAL Flexible Ducting deciding to SPLIT in several places, and seals crumbling ........... REALLY? Mr Dyson sucked us in good and proper on those TV Commercials which insisted on conning us we were buying quality and would have us believe that countless thousands of hours went in to R&D ....... if true, then it was to make sure they were made to fail, like everything else new today We all know why this never-ending land-fill "buy-and-throw-away" fiasco is promoted and condoned: CONSUMERISM .... via Inbuilt Obsolescence, in the name of the almighty dollar via exponentially increase in Sales and Employment for the Fat Cats running multi-million dollar companies. Companies that require their millions of executives to fly hundreds of millions of hours all over the world burning more and more jet fuel and car fuel, and more and more pollution from their factories producing low-life components (pun intended).................. you just need to look at our Nature Strips on hard Rubbish Days at the tons of near new items of every description to prove how conditioned we've become in promoting WASTE in the name of "Keeping Up With the Jonses" or "sick of that colour" so let's change it now, broken or not; often, (but rarely), because it cannot be repaired successfully for much less than a new one.

UPDATE NOVEMBER 2020 ,,,,,,,, This beats all. I contacted Dyson with a list of components I wanted to buy to try and get more life out of this PLASTIC RUBBISH. The woman who answered had no idea what I was talking about as she quickly informed me I would need to submit a CERTIFICATE proving I was a CERTIFIED ELECTRICIAN ! ............ really ? They cannot be for real ! NO OTHER company I have ever dealt with has come up with this RUBBISH. I explained that I did not need to touch anything ELECTRCAL and Plastic Parts was all that was being replaced..... NO, they were adamant at being totally unhelpful and extremely obtuse. My many Enginering Certificates were NOT going to "cut it".... In my 40 plus years as a Qualified Engineer, I have repaired more 240V and 415 volt machines than I can count, and here are these donkeys who peddle PLASTIC RUBBISH giving me these Brick-Walls to confirm there stupidity. People, check this PRODUCT REVIEW WEBSITE for the best in anything you need to buy, and save yourself a lot of grief. I for one, will never buy any Dyson product ever again. I since puchased a "dead" DC41 for $20 on Gumtree, that looked hardly used, but had a dead motor, and used all the good PLASTIC parts to revive my old DC41. All repairs done in LESS time than that wasted on the phone calls to those unhelpful, obtuse no-hopers at DYSON.

Poor design, breaks easily. Not happy at all – I don't like leaving negative reviews but this vacuum cleaner has been the source of so much frustration. I have had it a few years now as it was expensive, and I didn't budget to replace it. The plastic bits have broken. The top of the handle has suction when the vac is upright, so I've lost count of how many times I've vacuumed my arm! The… Read more

only good thing about it is the suction is very strong - so strong it cuked the wheel from the bottom of the vac! Unfortunately it doesn't vac anything bigger than a grain of rice though, so if youre kids drop peas on the floor (like mine do) you'll have to find something else. Wish I'd never bought it.

Best vacuum cleaner we've ever owned – This thing is fantastic, it works so well! It's performance is bar-none, it makes our carpet feel so soft and clean. I personally find it a little heavy and awkward to carry going up/down stairs, but it's just so effective and has great suction! We have a cat that sheds pretty heavily, and this vacuum removes all traces of hair! Works amazing, so well that we've dubbed it 'The Beast'! Great vacuum, well-worth the money.

Loving it! – I love this vacuum. so much i am writing a review on it! We have a small home with 2 cats and one white long haired dog. This vacuum is amazing, it picks up sooo much and fills the canister so quickly. Which i love! because you know it is working. Excellent but head could be bigger – I do love this vac, the suction is great, it glides effortlessly across both carpets and tiles. Smaller power head is amazing on my stairs and I love the attachments that work better than the older models. Only down side is this vac struggles to pick up larger items on the floor than the last Dyson vac we had as they have made the power head… Read more ·  1

Poor design, Plastic parts break and Dyson do not stand behind their product - I would not buy again – This is the first time I have ever left a product review as I normally wouldn't air grievances online but for such an expensive purchase I think others should be aware before making a decision on buying this Dyson. I am really annoyed with the poor quality of the DC41 Animal and lack of follow up and backing from Dyson. I purchased this top of the… Read more

range Dyson expecting the quality and performance to be superior to everything else on the market as this is what the salesperson lead me to believe was the best on the market. My Dyson is now around 6 years old and I have had 5 plastic parts break and fail on the unit in this time. This is not from misuse but from poor design and plastic parts failing. The Dyson service agent even commented on how good the machine had been looked after when I dropped it off for repair. The issues I have had are:

- Within 2 years the plastic handle had cracked from the flex in the plastic when pushing the vac around. A new part was sent out for me to fit.

- Within 2 years the plastic clip on the hose broke and a new part was sent out for me to fit

- Within 4 years the plastic release button to release the cyclone canister broke. I didn't action getting this fixed until now as the catch was still working but now the rest of the button/catch and spring finally fell out and the canister would no longer lock in place. **Multiple reviews below with this same issue**

- When looking for the serial number on the unit to arrange getting the above repaired I noticed a crack in the actual main housing near the hose which is between two thicker plastic mouldings. This is a design fault and I believe has been there for a few years as it may have contributed as to why the vac won't lock in the upright position easily.

- Upon taking into Dyson service they have reported that the floor head also needs repair as a "plastic bush" is worn and will damage my floors if not fixed.**Multiple reviews below with this same issue**

The service centre has said they will "goodwill" the repair on the floor head but I have to buy a whole new cyclone canister as the button does not come as a part on its own and I would also need to pay to repair the housing for a total of $210. I've contacted Dyson head office to politely explain I expected more from their product as I purchased this not out of necessity but because I wanted the best machine to clean our floors in our new house. The Electrolux I have had for nearly 10 years longer still hasn't missed a beat and was 1/3rd of the price!

Dyson failed to come back to me as they promised multiple times with no follow up for over a week each time until I had to sit on hold to customer service for nearly an hour to follow them up again. They were unwilling to stand behind their product even though these issues are obvious design faults and would only "goodwill" the floor head. The main service manager in Sydney who I had to wait to return from a training course the following week didn't even have the decency to return my call after I had to follow him up up after that week had passed, instead palming me off onto the customer service rep again who said their position wouldn't change and the fee for repair would stand.

I am so disappointed in Dyson and this product. To have 5 failures in 6 years on the "Top of the Range" Upright I don't think is acceptable or to be expected. The plastic parts are brittle and have not lasted. Dyson obviously don't stand behind their product as having to pay over 1/3rd of the cost of what a new DC41 costs is ridiculous for design fault failures in such a sort period of time. I would suggest people looking to buy this machine look at all their options as my experience with the product and the brand have been what I consider to be poor, unacceptable and well below expectations.

Not suitable wished I had not bought one – Thought we were buying the best at the cost of this DC41 Animal vac. Not only did we buy one, but my Daughter bought one the same day. met up with a Dyson rep, I took a sample of the carpet I was using it on , I showed him our hard it was to use,he suggested using it a bit longer as it would get easier ( no it did not ). As others have said trying to use the hose is as good as going to the gym except you don't have a vac flying at you from behind. Now for the worst part, our Daughter called us to her house as the vac was not sucking and on inspection the internal hose had come apart and split. I was going to lend her our one so she could complete her house work and guess what, our one did the same thing the week before.. Definitely a design fault. Two Dyson DC41 costing us a lot of money we could ill afford and only 4years old and totally useless. Not Happy. Our last vac lasted 20 years and not a problem.

Wouldn’t buy another one, too many problems in 3 and 1/2 yrs old – Have a Dyson DC41 animal think about 3 and half years old. Have had nothing but trouble with this machine, this morning vacuuming I could smell a burning somewhere and saw sparks coming out of the brush head, which kept stopping while vacuuming, immediately turned it off and don’t know what to do now. Would not buy another one, had problems right from the start.  Show details

Absolutley TERRIBLE – I purchased for $799 and it is crap. My 90 year old asthmatic neighbour could suck harder. So far so good – We purchased the DC41 over 4 years ago and went from a Wertheim 6030. The power head of both machines are similar however I think even with the suction boost of the wertheim the Dyson is superior. I have now come across a U.K. website that lists the problem that I now have due to my tiled floor. The machine is very hard to push because a key wheel… Read more

in the head assembly (which seems to be a design fault or maybe an assurance of constant sales) has fallen out and cannot be replaced due to the wear. This is listed on :

Suction seems to be superior to the wertheim and so far reliability (with the exception of this $90 part) is good. I would look at which floor surface you'd be buying this for before purchasing.

Expensive piece of plastic rubbish – This machine does a good job and removes a lot of fluff and dirt as a vacuum cleaner should. That is where it ends. machine has lot's of problems. With numerous parts that are all cheap plastic rubbish that have either worn away or broke with use.

I got a high quote of over $200 to repair the machine which I find completely unacceptable for a machine that cost $800 and isn't 5 years old yet The machine is used in a household of only 2 people.

I have been a Dyson Customer for a few years and have always supported their products and raved about them and many of my friends bought a Dyson and some have had a few troubles and made me look a fool.

However after this experience and the let down i feel they are no longer what they used to be and I would warn others to think very carefully where they spend their money. There are better options out there.

Poorly designed, overpriced, now sparks from the head – Dyson must have had a work experience student design this without supervision. Good when it sucks. Sucks when it doesn't – I had a Kirby for 15yrs and used to swear by it, despite it being ridiculously heavy and emitting dust whenever I vacuumed. parts back together again.

Head size is an issue for us -- the large head makes it impossible to get under our couches without one of us having to lift while the other vacuums.

The biggest problem with a Dyson though is suction life.

Suction is awesome while the unit is new but get to the 3yr mark and no matter what you do to clean the different parts, the suction is still awful. Ours is just over 3yrs old now and fails to even suck up a piece of tinsel on the carpet - yep, it's that bad.

Dyson Customer Service are great while your machine is under warranty but once it's out of warranty, they will all but blame you for stuffing things up. We've been told to rip the thing apart, clean every removable part and then put it back together... even after doing all of that and researching YouTube fixes, our machine is still crap.

Loss of suction is a known issue on the Dyson Animal. Not sure why the company chooses to ignore it.

Overpriced, customer service is atrocious, completely lost suction when only 3 years old – My husband and I thought we might spend a lot on a 'decent' vacuum 3 years ago and figured Dyson was top of the range quality. wand as this seems to work more efficiently but it therefore defeats the purpose of even using the expensive vacuum in the first place.

We have now just discovered that the vacuum has somehow suffered a complete loss of suction as the internal hose inside the ball has deteriorated due to no fault of our own and we have rang Dyson, Facebook messaged them and even emailed them only to be told the same things - pay more money to fix this issue that is faulty.

That is just not good enough and I can say I will NEVER purchase another Dyson again, our warranty ran out three months ago, the machine is still 'new' and is now sitting in the corner collecting dust as it has failed us. We could not be more disappointed with Dyson. Don't be fooled by their coy marketing.

This vacuum was great, right up until I bought it. Dyson, you have failed this vacuum.

Dyson DC 41 – First I have to say that I have never written a review, but I would like to make sure no one make the same mistake as I did. was I wrong!!! I have had this vacuum cleaner for 2 years (exactly) and just about everything has broken on it. The brush stopped working, the cables on the brush broke, we had to completely replace the whole brush head. Now the button to empty the canister broke, because of its POOR design, and in order to replace this small button I have to purchase the entire cyclone, which costs $95.99 not including tax and shipping. I called customer service and she mentioned that I may have misuse and not taken good care of the vacuum - really???? how about that piece is poorly designed that it breaks easy. This vacuum cleaner is cheaply made, the materials are cheap plastic - DO NOT BUY!!!!

Poor value, low quality machine. Do yourself a favour- don't buy one – We purchased this vacuum in June 2012 thinking that paying a lot of money will ensure we have a machine that would last us for 8-10 years, we were wrong, 3.5 years down the track I'm ready to throw this thing in the bin. We had numerous failures throughout the warranty period that Dyson rectified albeit leaving us without a vacuum for up to 2… Read more

weeks at a time because their NSW service centre is in Taren Point, Sydney. The warranty period is now over and things continue to break & fail so I go to their website where I discover that I cannot purchase a small (but crucial) button that broke without buying a complete new canister assembly, they have removed the option to purchase individual parts as the machine gets older. When I contacted the Dyson support they were courteous but unhelpful. On an interesting side note, before we purchased this machine we bought a different model Dyson which wouldn't pick up a paperclip, I wrote a negative review on their website along with a positive review for the DC41, they published the positive review but failed to post the negative review, just a little unethical. Now, to the design of the machine, if your home is a large flat area without any corners or furniture this is a great machine as it has great suction but if you live in a normal house with walls, rooms & furniture you can do better, the hose part of the machine is completely useless even when you follow all the misguided directions supplied by Dyson. The hose wand is way too long so when you clean between the lounge cushions you have to balance the rest of the wand on your elbow until the hose contracts pulling the machine over on you. Do not use this on stairs, it can be dangerous. All in all I am very disappointed with a machine that costs just under $1,000. Please do your research, we are doing that right now & will never again get a Dyson.

Good concept but poor quality and bad value for money – Purchased in Jan 2012 to clean carpets better than our 11 year old Miele. Replaced cleaning head in May 2012 under warranty. interested in helping out except to give the name of a local repair agent.

Its not a lightweight machine and despite the hype about the ball it runs on, it is not the easiest to push around.

Filters cleaned as per Dyson on line reminders (good point) and machine is used in a standard 2 person domestic environment.

The DC41 is a noisy machine compared to our Miele - which still works fine and which still has a supple retractable power cord it just doesn't do carpets as well as the Dyson (or probably any other upright with a rotating brush head)

The extendable hose is of poor design as it will kink easily when in use, thus reducing suction power at the nozzle.

My wife probably got caught up in the hype and funky coloured plastic bits, but costing over $900 and lasting less than 4 years, you have to wonder if you want to spend the equivalent of $250 per year for the hype.

Good vacuum. Poor design – I have used this vacuum for 2 years now. Great suction and cleaning power. It's a shame the hose is almost impossible to use without frustration and it is very difficult to lock in the upright position. Dyson have much better designs in cheaper models.

better than a kirby – Bought this vaccum a couple of months ago. This was an upgrade to an older kirby vac that we had. When i vaccumed for the first time, i couldnt believe how much dust, cat hair and dirt got sucked up. Was quite disgusting. Did my friend house, same result. The hose is stiff at first but gradually loosens up. All the attachments are fantastic. It… Read more ·  1

takes time to get used to the ball technology but now its a breeze.

Id like to point out to everyone that yes this is the heaviest of the dyson range but all these old timers and physically impaired people obviously didnt ask for a demonstration and go of the vaccum before they forked out hundreds of dollars. I sure as hell did because i didnt want to blow my money. Even the bosch rep said she loves the dysons when i was looking at vacs. I seriously have no qualms about this vac and enjoy vaccuming my house almost daily. I even vaccum my porch sometimes. My two cents.

Waste of money – I bought the upright Dyson animal DC41 few months ago. I have no carpet in my house, all floorboards. I bought this machine because it was raved as the best for either carpet or hardwood floors. I have a fluffy cat who leaves hair everywhere. This machine does not suck up all the debris & dust on my floors & I vacuum weekly. There is always an… Read more

obvious dust layer left on the floors & it does not pick up bigger debris such as sand, kitty litter, outside dirt or simple household dust. I had an Electrolux for 20 years that cleaned my floors extremely well to the point that I could get away with not washing my floors as the suction on it was unbelievable, unfortunately it broke. The suction on the dyson is rubbish. It feels like there is no suction at all under the head. It is hard to manipulate, unable to get under the bed or smaller spaces, difficult to move & falls over when using the extension hose. Worst decision I ever made.

Underwhelmed – After shelling out close to 700 on this beast, i must say I'm a little underwhelmed. The design is good but its definitly heavier than its cousins. Also, not a huge fan of the extension tube as it pulls back on you when you are doing the stairs nor is it long enough to do them yourself. i get my partner and kids to hold the body on the 4th or 5th… Read more

step of the stair so i could do the entire staircase. not the best of designs when it comes to that. I reckon a few more extensions could have been made standard with the product, esp the mattress one.

Overall, i guess you could get away with the shark navigator pro for lesser and a better design.(my mate bought it and ive tried it a few times). Sore arms and sore legs and sore backs is what im getting from it and it kinda defeats the purpose of buying an upright. and NO this isnt my first either !

Never again – I had bought the Dyson upright vacuum cleaner due yo my bad back, so I won't have to pull the vacuums around. Bad mistake, I have never bought such a heavy, awkward vacuum cleaner in my life. You have to change parts to go around corners and under tables and beds, the hose gets suctioned in all the time and you have to pull it constantly to get… Read more

the length. Not to mention it cost me a small bloody fortune. DO NOT recommend this to anyone. Now I have to go out and get another vacuum cleaner one that does not only hurt my back but my arms as well.

Too awkward to handle and heavy to manoeuvre

Powerful Cleaner – I bought this machine over 2 years ago after using uprights of cheaper brands for numerous years. This is a very effective powerful cleaner and the amount of dust and fluff it picks up makes you feel guilty that your house is so dirty!! The only negative I have is the difficult use of the hose attachment. When the hose is removed from the unit in… Read more ·  1

the attempt to, say, use the crevice tool .... it just wants to retract due to the powerful suction. I've ended up almost wrapping it around my neck and shoulder to prevent this - but really a design tweak needs to happen. This seems to be a common complaint. Also, I find when using the crevice tool the little brush slider on it wants to slide down - and I'm constantly trying to pull it up with some difficulty too. I'm fairly fit and strong so the wrestle with the hose is a concern ... I wouldn't want to see a frail older person tackle it. Light to push around and easy to manoeuvre. Great suction and excellent cleaning ability. Hose wanting to retract back.

Love to vacuum even more – We just replaced our 2010 model Electrolux Ultra Active vacuum ( cost over $600 new), which is great but the turbo brush needed to replace for the 2nd time at $300!!!. It work out cheaper, long term just to buy another vacuum. I took a big step in getting a upright vacuum as I'm sick of my old barrel smacking into my walls. And I'm so glad I… Read more ·  1

did purchase this model, Havery Norman had a special on this model for $689, which is cheap. So many attachments, pack up nice and neat and the suction power just amazed me. I vacuum regularly, 1 to 2 times a week and we all wear no shoes and have an indoor cat in our home of 4 years.

This model just sucked up everything that my old vacuum could reach in our carpets. I was impressed but disgusted with the results, but my carpets look so different and feels different too. It does take me a little longer than my preview machine as you can't vacuum anything low but it has a hose extension and attachments which got to those spot better. I'm so happy with this machine, but I do hope it will last longer than my Electrolux. The suction power removing the fine dirt and dust that my old vacuum could get too, the attachments and hose extension Not really a con but maybe an improvement. The hose attachment is great but when switched on the hose retract it self due to the power. But other then at not a big con for me.

Fantastic machine no problems in 5 years – we bought an older model of the same thing 5 years ago. Turbo head for animal hair and allergies etc. We both love it. My husband loves the mechanical elements and the industrial noise of the thing - its not exactly delicate. Much prefer the upright cleaner to every other vacuum I've owned which has been the floor type. No more having to drag it… Read more ·  1

around and bang into walls and doors etc can just push and steer it around. I find it easier on my back but a big clean is still hard work. Love all the things it can do and attachments it just takes some time to really learn what its capable of and what works best for what. It was expensive but worth it. I could feel the difference on my feet from the previous vacuum's efforts. I get allergies and skin reactions so a good vacuum is a must and this does a great job of limiting dust and in bare feet its noticeable - rugs don't have that "coated" feeling. it makes a noticeable difference allergies wise its very loud when it goes into turbo

Disappointed – I purchased this upright vacuum because I had a car accident & have injuries which make it hard very hard to vacuum. If i do I have pain & can't move for days. Whilst open areas are great & I don't get the pain I did using a normal barrel vacuum, going around or trying to go under furniture is nearly impossible! My husband point blank hates the… Read more

machine. I now wish I either purchased a barrel one or the shark option as the hose attachment is basically useless, you just have to keep pulling it out all the time & the fixed pole make it impossible to use in the areas that would need to. I have now spent a small fortune on a vacuum that does half a job & I could have purchased two different types of machine to help me manage doing the vacuuming. I was trying to help my poor husband out who has been doing everything but I can still only do half a job :( Vacuums open areas very will Vacuuming under furniture, around the edges & using the hose/pole option is like fighting with a wild animal!

AMAZING! – I love my Dyson Animal. The suction is second to none. Move-ability excellent. Carpets & hard floors look great! A minor problem with a rubber on the head. We rang Dyson, they are sending us a replacement head via courier. We asked if it was a known problem to which the lady stated"No, its just the head getting used to your floors. Thanks G------- – Well, I was going to buy a $99 vaccy at G-------, but after being given the runaround , you know... Sold out or trying to sell me a dear one I asked how theta went against Dyson, well 3 of the shops said they were bad. Bit rude as they don't sell them. Can't still believe I spent so much , Dyson a bit noisy, bit heavy but wow my home now even… Read more ·  1

Very pleased with this sucker! – We spent some time weighing up the differences between most vacuums on the market in the price range of $700 - $1,000. We had previously owned a Dyson (Origin) and although we were happy with the old Dyson that had packed it in after about 14 years of good service, we were happy to consider something different. In the end we decided to stick with… Read more ·  1

what appeared to be high quality and reasonable value when compared with a few other hi-end brands. The DC41 is very powerful and easy to handle. The furniture power head (the small one) is very effective yet gentle on a loose fabric lounge. In general we are very happy with the DC41. Very powerful suction. Utility wheels can collapse (go to vacuum mode) when you least expect it. Not a huge problem but could be improved.
