Pond Vac works - but only barely – I moved to a new home which had an about 4m x 2.5m fishpond with a little waterfall and three Koi carp. It's a lovely feature, but I soon learned, pretty high maintenance. Organic matter and algae build up quickly especially in summer, and the water quality suffers. So after having pumped out the pond several times, which is about 4-6 hours work and very messy (putting the carp in a holding tub), I bought a PondMax Wet/Dry Pond Vac online. It vacuums detritus and algae off the bottom of the pond into a holding tank and then discharges the water (I sit the unit on another tank so I can recycle at least some of the water.) This means that it operates for about 30-40 seconds, and then you wait 2 minutes or so for the holding tank to empty and start the next cycle. It's agonisingly slow for this reason, takes the patience of a saint to really make any difference. Yes, it does work as advertised, but the result is never as good as going to the trouble of doing a complete flush, scrub and re-fill.

All that said, and revisiting after a few months, it has become part of the standard kit for fishpond maintenance, and better to have it, than not have it. It's especially useful for the last stages of a complete pond flush as it sucks up all the really icky stuff that's left by the pond pump.
