just the public health service in Albury is abysmal and scary. My 90 yo mother had to wait over 3 hours in ED to even see a Dr. She died 6 weeks later of bowel Ca. Therefore im going elsewhere. Im not letting GMHBA push me around. They can get stuffed.
Their coverage is good have competitive prices, they are reasonable, but customer service is pathetic. I forgot the name of the rep who i spoke with, she qas dumb, rude and definitely should be terminated. I asked her a question and she aaid i dont know we are busy. I said you think i m free? Do not touch gmhba . I have hours apon hours to try and get hold of the. To no avail . They have turned off the message app . Would not allow me to pause my premiums whilst on an overseas trip. Apparently you must confirm this prior to departure. I’ve paid for 4 weeks of premiums whilst overseas already so they’ve gotten money for free and yet they won’t allow me to pause for the remainder of my trip!? Edit: they allowed me to pause after threatening to cancel my insurance. A good outcome but still a ridiculous policy that needs to change.
They have advertised a 1.9% increase in April 2026 but our gold cover that we have been on for a lot of years is increasing this year April 2026 by 13% in one year Show details

TERRIBLE customer support...Closed my account in June 2025, as not competitive, they illegally deducted a $4000 plus premium in July and have failed to refund despite 9 phone calls and 6 emails. critical dental work… all since 2019. GMHBA level of cover was very good, and the hospital claims were all straightforward.
Some people have reported issues with using the GMHBA website. However, I have had no problems submitting online claims e.g. Ambulance cover (Victoria) and other manual claims. I find their online claims history very easy to navigate. And their Fact Sheet and accompanying information is relatively clear.
When I have rarely had to contact phone support, the staff have been knowledgable and able to resolve my issue on the first call. (Unlike Telstra, the banks, Centrelink etc etc).
It is true that health insurance is extremely expensive, and no fund is perfect. But I would rather be with GMHBA than other providers.
I have had several friends and relatives well over 60 that thought they could get away without hospital cover, or cover that did not include “joint replacement”. When their hips went, they all had to hobble around for two years waiting for the public system, or nearly as long to upgrade their level of cover and go private. One could not wait for surgery and had to pay fully for a double hip replacement and was out of pocket by about $40,000.
So many people over 65 now require hip and knee replacements. I recommend that anyone over 60 has hospital cover that includes “joint REPLACEMENT” as a minimum. Extras cover is not critical.

This was in stark contrast to all of the other (big name) companies that I received quotes from where I felt like ‘just another number’. Harrison also suggested that I double check exactly what I needed in terms of rehabilitation before taking out cover. I’m very grateful to him for his thoroughness and it’s such a weight off my mind now that I have my cover and extras sorted. The option to cover for different levels of extras cover was an added bonus and in the end was one of the reasons that I went ahead with GMHBA. The other reason I went ahead was how confident Harrison made me feel about the cover he was suggesting. Thank you so much for helping me through a very stressful and complex time!

bonus for our good health (non-use of certain categories, rewards for being healthy). We lived overseas for a while, so suspended GMHBA till we returned and they helped us through the entire renewal process with no hassles and a lot of personal phone service. Nice manner from the service chap and it is always like that. Their training must be very diligent. Our only regret is that they don't allow us at our advanced age to opt out of anything to do with childbirth, quitting smoking and other services we don't use. We are very healthy and would love some discounts on decent sneakers, a swimming club for instance, instead of inappropriate options. I like the fact that they don't waste money on branches as everything can be done digitally. Claims are easy, fast and if I have any queries, they are answered very fast with little hanging on a phone line and certainly never any handing off of the call to other workers. Plus the call centres have always been local and let's hope it stays that way as I cannot stand dealing with overseas call centres. While I understand that insurance is a shared liability across many age groups, it would be nice if they introduced an option for mostly healthy oldies, and if they do, I'll give them 5 stars!

Their call wait times are currently horrid. They have turned off their online chat assistant feature. Eventually I got through after 3 failed call attempts waiting for hours on hold. advising all of their members that have been with them for a longish time about the existence of newer plans at cheaper rates. They may claim it's the customer's responsibility to check - I say no, as a customer centric organisation it's your responsibility to ensure your existing members are getting the best deal. I complained about this and they offered me 6 weeks extra for free. I'd highly recommend everyone ask for the same kind of deal or else threaten to walk!

I have not had a problem with GMHBA until recently, when I purchased a blood pressure monitor and made a claim with them on my extras cover, and wow, I sent them the Drs letter to conform I needed one for my high blood pressure and I also sent them the receipt from the chemist I bought it from, but NO the receipt is not good enough, have no idea… Read more
why, the receipt is ok for taxation purposes but not for my claim for my blood pressure monitor, so I am feeling ripped off by them, they have all the proof they need but they just want to make it impossible so they don't have to pay out , so beware of the hoops they make you jump thru when claiming on their extras, I will be cancelling my extras with them Max

After 15 years as a GMHBA member, my experience has deteriorated significantly. I can no longer log into the online portal or app, which means I cannot make claims digitally. Furthermore, I was asked to put sensitive personal information (DOB, address, etc.) in the body of an unsecure email for processing. This contradicts GMHBA’s own advice regarding data security, which seems particularly contradictory given the recent rollout of an authenticator for app security. The inability to securely and reliably process claims, coupled with the lack of resolution from the call center, is unacceptable. I am very unhappy with the current service and will be looking for a new health insurer.

Had been a happy GMHBA Silver plus hospital only policy holder who paid in advance annually. Phoned to add extras and asked if they would waiver waiting periods as per the promotion for new members who take out the same policy as acknowledgment of our ongoing patronage. This was denied, the person I spoke to also refused to take it to her manager… Read more
for review. As a result we have moved to another health fund who were able to provide the same policy cheaper and waiver all waiting periods. GMHBA puts a lot of effort into new customers but little care or acknowledgement to those that try to remain loyal.

hoops and I dont even understand what they want me to do. SPELL IT OUT, why make it so hard with copy and paste mumbo jumbo? As for my travel and motel expenses I am entitled too, sent them all the relevant information and still have not received my refund. So now I have moved on to another healthcare fund that not only offers more but makes claiming so much easier and covers the GAP.

I have just recently changed from GMHBA to ahm after 10 years ( too long) and have been offered a much better deal, paying less and better refunds for extras. Not at all happy with the service received. I require a surgery that involves a prosthesis that is not on the government list - whilst I understand it is at the discretion of the insurer as to if they wish to cover it or not, I do not believe I have been fairly assessed. My specialists office has tried to get this prosthesis approved through GMHBA… Read more
so that I can go through the private system with my specialist who I have been seeing for more than 14yrs (and have had 5 surgeries with), but the responses have been that I can just have a standard prosthetic (that is on the gov list). I do not have the anatomy for this prosthetic anymore and is why we are requesting the one that will actually work for me. One thing I think health insurances don’t think about in this situation is the fact it is my life they are playing with and that is being affected by their decision not to cover - when I believe it hasn’t even been assessed fairly.

Bad experience – What a joke their app is. I can’t even log in with email. Tried everything, and even rang the useless 1300 number. No help whatsoever. Rip offs – I had been a member for over 25 years and had made only a few claims. I needed to have major dental treatment done so I contacted GMHBA to increase my level of cover. GMHBA not suitable for ACT residents – In many ways the fund has been good over the many years I was a member until nearly six years ago. GMHBA still does not have a “free free arrangement” with Capital Pathology, the predominant provider in Canberra for in hospital pathology tests. I got a rude shock when I got bill of over $2,000 from Capital Pathology following my heart bypass surgery. If I was a member of most other funds I would been covered. Be warned. Show details
