Just received a Hornby Limited Edition J36 Class 0-6-0 steam loco. The order process was easy. Item tracking was very useful. The delivery time was a bit delayed when it got to Adelaide, not sure why. The loco arrived in good condition and it had… Read more
been tested by Hearn's prior to despatching (see sticker on box). The loco runs well and I am very happy that I was able to purchase a Limited Edition Hornby product. Thankyou Hearn's.
Follow-up · Very happy with the J36 class limited edition steam loco I ordered from Hearn's Hobbies. Packaging was robust and tracking of the product was good. However for some reason the item was held up at postal centre in Victoria and it took a while to arrive in Adelaide.Interestingly a product I ordered from the UK via Amazon arrived in less time!
Have just purchased x2 models from Hearns Hobbies and placed both orders on a Sunday, got an immediate response. Notified on Monday that purchase was collected by Australia post and come Tuesday it was delivered in the morning. Thanks again Guy's, appreciate your professionalism. Kind Regards Joseph Roulston
Still waiting on out of stock items – Ordered lots of Peco setrack online. This was my first order from HH so they gave me a $10 gift to put towards my order. Also as I was writing my order a popup screen came up which said it was adding a volume discount to my order. What a great way to welcome new customers. However they did not have all my wanted items in stock. They had a "notify… Read more · 1
me when in stock" box which I filled out. It has been more the a week now and I have not heard anything about my out standing items.
Excellent – Very pleased with a speedy delivery and also item well packaged with that little extra surprise.
Their service is great – My order arrived on time and was neatly packaged. Great service
Great – Received all that I asked for and in quick time
great service – I ordered a model boat from Hearns to New Zealand, Fantastic service and quick. I found Hears is some what quicker than some New Zealand services. Why did I order from Hearns, it is because I can not get it from locals shops. Local shops in New Zealand appears to be very slow in getting new models.
Thanks to all staff – Fantastic staff who go out of their way to help with anything. Very prompt delivery of goods.
Thumbs up – Chris craft arrived today excellent service your end the staff were brilliant.
PURCHASE OF PECO POINTS – Awesome place to get your items from quick delivery etc etc when I need stuff Hearns is my 1st call .
No customer service when things go wrong – Bought a item from their website that was in stock, got warm and fuzzy emails saying how good it was to have me as a customer, a few days later get a text message to call them as item was out of stock even though it showed as in stock, called them and they tried to find an item to substitute but nothing I wanted was in stock, asked for a refund… Read more
but 1 week later no refund has been issued, no answer to email asking when I will receive it, once I have my refund I will not shop there again.

Excellent service – The Hobbyman offers a good online service, items clearly described with pricing. Postage is standard for Australia. The part ordered is as described the service was fast and efficient and item arrived on time. Kind regards Richard Clews
Discriminates against customers with mask exemptions – In a nutshell, dirtbags!!! I’ve been a customer of this store since I arrived in this country 30+ yrs ago and today was denied entry for not wearing a face nappy, even though I explained I’m exempt. Store policy, above and beyond the CHO directives! Pure discriminatory policy! You’ve just lost a loyal customer and won’t be getting my business ever again.
Just Excellent! – Great range of high quality products. Courteous and reliable customer service. Extremely quick delivery. Highly recommended for all your hobby needs!
Bad experience – I recently purchased a Haskell Na loco from Hearns Hobbies. The model arrived in a box that was barely larger than the box for the model, with just a few small pieces of newspaper either side (there was no room for packing top or bottom, or either end. Consequently the model arrived damaged. I contacted HH but was very disappointed with their… Read more
response – basically it was “not our problem, you should have added insurance”. I’ve bought locos from all over the world and this is the first one to arrive damaged. If Hearns are unable/unwilling to provided adequate packaging they shouldn’t be in the mail order business. With this attitude I definitely will not deal with Hearns again.
Great Service – Once again, I received prompt and accurate service during distance online purchasing. This is really appreciated by isolated customers and included a check by telephone.
The Tiger Moth has landed – Excellent. Just received my order from HH. Shipping was prompt, the item was well packaged in mint condition, and the transaction was seamless. In these difficult times, when we needy modellers are isolated in lockdown, it is gratifying to have reliable online traders like HH who maintain such high standards. Highly recommended.
Excellent service – l recently purchased a kit. I was very pleased with the professional service. The kit arrived very quickly and the level of communication at all times was exemplary.
Great service – My dealings with Hearns Hobbies has been very professional, friendly and helpful competitive prices and old fashioned service thanks guys a pleasure no messing about getting your order in the post. What more is there AAA
Excellent service – I m very impressed with the way you conduct your business and communicate with your customers Highly impressive Keep it up will use this company again
Dreadful service. Totally unorganized despatch team – I purchased a number of items online - all of which were showing as in stock. The post has been slow in general due to covid so after a week of waiting i contacted them to find out the status. its turned out that my order has not even been processed as yet. Why? Because ONE of the items is out of stock. You would think that the logical thing… Read more
to do would be to offer the customer the option to receive the balance of the order and disregard the one item that is not in stock.
No, Hearn's solution is to just do nothing - no communications at all with the customer - just leave it all on the shelf until the missing item eventually comes in - when? They're not sure. Oh, they say they tried to call me once, but i didnt answer - problem solved I guess?
You couldn't make this up.
Next was the process of trying to get a refund.
No response to emails or via their support channel on Facebook.
No response to a Paypal dispute that i filed.
In a last ditched effort to resolve the issue i have filed a complaint with consumer affairs.
Honestly, a shop like this is supposed to be associated with a relaxing hobby that is a break from the pressures of the real world, but instead, i spend my time chasing Hearn's inept staff and still getting nowhere.
What a shame such an iconic store has been reduced to this.
Hearns Hobbies is reputed hobby store with lots of products at competitive prices – Anyone who has been to Melbourne Australia should make a point to visit Hearns Hobbies. Established in 1947 and still fighting fit! How many shops you know can beat this record?! It must be in a number of travel guides as one of the must visit tourist spots in Melbourne! I have been fondly visiting this store for decades. While it is fantastic… Read more
to see things improve and advance over time, sometimes, it is also very reassuring and comforting to see some things remain, so reliable after all these years.
Don't get me wrong, I am not saying Hearns Hobbies is stagnant. Far from it. It has been evolving over time. Still there are many train sets and accessories. There is still a very large collection of affix / plastic scaled models. Since it is in the heart of the city at the iconic Flinders Street train station right next to the entrance, it must also appeal to city slickers who are into Gundams and die cast models. Despite the lack of space in the city, there is a surprising quantity of RC vehicles too, RTR, racing chassis, buggies, crawlers of 1/8 scale and 1/10 scale. There are some drones / quadcopters and planes and I think it can beef up a bit on drones like DJIs.
Not sure if it is affiliation, acquisition, merger or what, but there is also a large shop by the name Hobbyman out in the suburb Narre Warren opened by Hearns Hobbies. With that, Hearns Hobbies' RC stock has substantially increased. If you love RC, you must visit Hobbyman! Well, give it a virtual visit with your fingers while we are in covid-19 lockdown. I was so impressed when I visited the store and saw a large wall full of RCs plus many more on shelves, some 1/5 scale and obviously many go there to get their beloved vehicles serviced or repaired. And it was so busy, I waited more than 15mins before I was attended to.
I used to find prices to be high at Hearns Hobbies, not quite anymore! Correct me if you have better information or insights, since Hobbyman, the prices at Hearns Hobbies is great and competitive. Yes, one might still find online stores a bit cheaper. But I would and I would encourage everyone to visit this store, buy from it and support local businesses. Go on, buy a kit to build, it is an awesome hobby and a great learning experience and you want your kids to have this option available to them if they so choose this hobby for themselves now and when they are bigger.
On top of all these, staff are friendly and very helpful.
Given the CBD is a ghost town during this lockdown period, it must be very difficult to stay afloat as a business. All the best, I look forward to visiting when some normality returns and I can't wait until then. In the meantime, I will put your online store through its paces.
