Our experience dealing with this business has been nothing but a total nightmare. They hold no accountability for any consumer laws pertaining to quality, acceptable standards or warranty timelines. Our new caravan was presented at delivery (hand over) with clear and obvious faults and damage. To present a newly built damaged caravan absolutely… Read more

represents their "care factor", being NONE. With our money already in their hands, the hard lesson was learnt. Trust noone and inspect before full payment. With those initial issues and then further van failures being identified post delivery, we had a horrid and stressful 2+ year fight for warranty to be undertaken. Our endless repeated emails and calls to Hinterland only resulted in either no response or more excuses, most excuses pointing to others being at fault, when clearly under Australian Consumer Law they are the responsible party. Management is seriously in need of lessons in customer service, consumer law, acceptable standards, common decency and admitting when they have failed. The battle with Hinterland is ongoing! We wonder if those within Hinterland management would be accepting of this level of disgraceful treatment like we have endured?

⭐ FURIOUS CUSTOMER REVIEW – Great Aussie Caravans & Hinterland Caravans Gold Coast Great Aussie Tribal Xplora 22ft – 5 Down Under | Purchased 2025 This entire experience has been one of the most stressful, expensive and infuriating purchases we have ever made. Buyers deserve to know exactly what we went through. --- PROMISED AN APRIL BUILD —… Read more

IN WRITING — AND STILL FAILED TO DELIVER

Hinterland sent us a text message stating that if we paid the deposit that week, we would get an April build and a 1 May pickup.

We paid immediately. They did not honour their written promise.

The van didn’t go into manufacture until mid-June — over 7.5 weeks late — despite both Hinterland and Great Aussie knowing full well we were homeless and living out of motels and cabins until the new van arrived. This cost us over $10,000 in last-minute accommodation and dog boarding.

The excuse? Public holidays. As though Easter and ANZAC Day are a brand-new concept that nobody could have planned for.

This delay wasn’t unavoidable — it was mismanagement, and we paid the price.

---

HANDOVER WAS A COMPLETE SHAMBLES

The handover was chaotic, slow and deeply unprofessional.

Handover booked for 8am.

We didn’t leave until after 12:30pm.

Tina, who was meant to finalise paperwork, never showed.

We sat waiting in the rain for over an hour.

Staff seemed confused about who was responsible for what.

The included caravan park details were given to us on a sticky note.

That park wasn’t dog-friendly, despite them knowing we had a Rottweiler.

We had to urgently extend the dog’s boarding because of their mistake.

We were then told to pack up (still raining) and drive to a totally different park.

And then came one of the biggest red flags of all…

---

❌ TOILET CASSETTE COULDN’T EVEN BE REMOVED AT HANDOVER

During handover, the staff member tried to remove the toilet cassette — and couldn’t.

He couldn’t physically get it out. He struggled and eventually resorted to brute force.

His suggestion? “Just keep using brute strength.”

I’m sorry, but that is NOT normal and absolutely NOT an acceptable “solution” on a brand-new van.

After WE applied grease ourselves, the cassette slid in and out smoothly — proving this was an issue that should have been addressed before handover. Yet we were told this was “normal” and to basically force it.

This was a clear sign of poor quality control and lack of proper inspection before the van was handed over.

---

THE RAIN, THE CHAOS & THE STRESS MADE US SICK

Because of the endless stuffing around between two caravan parks, multiple set-ups and pack-ups in the rain, my 13-year-old daughter got sick — and then so did I.

We had to immediately travel to Bendigo to help move my elderly, immunocompromised mother into a nursing home. But because I was sick from the miserable handover ordeal, I was unable to help with her care, decisions, or the distribution of her belongings.

This wasn’t fair on my mother, and it wasn’t fair on my family. And it was a direct consequence of Hinterland’s completely disorganised process.

---

IMMEDIATE FAULTS — ZERO QUALITY CONTROL

Within the first days of owning the van, we discovered:

BOS stabiliser legs were too short to reach the ground.

No 240V hot water — gas only.

The toilet leaks, smells, and has stained the floor.

No dealer near us will deal with chemical toilets — we had to contact Dometic ourselves.

A brand-new van should NOT leave the factory with problems this basic.

Yes, the BOS legs were eventually replaced in October — but that doesn’t undo the months of frustration and the fact they should never have been wrong in the first place.

---

WARRANTY SUPPORT IS ANOTHER NIGHTMARE

Trying to get anything fixed is a constant battle:

Hinterland refuse to act without GAC approval.

Great Aussie rarely answer calls.

Emails sit unanswered.

Everything requires endless photos and videos.

Even urgent issues drag on for months.

The message seems to be: “We’ve been paid. Good luck.”

---

❌ FINAL VERDICT

We loved the idea of the layout. We were excited. We spent a huge amount of money.

Instead we got:

Broken written promises

A van built 7.5 weeks late

Over $10,000 wasted

A handover that was a complete mess

A toilet cassette that couldn’t even be removed

Multiple major faults from day one

Terrible warranty support

Stress that made us sick

And being unable to support my elderly mother during a critical time

This has been infuriating, stressful, and a complete letdown.

Would we recommend Great Aussie Caravans or Hinterland Caravans? Absolutely NOT. Not after what we’ve endured.

Buyer Beware – What a shame I have to add a star. Please read prior to purchasing through Hinterland Caravans! I have just lodged an application with the office of fair trading to try to address the issue of my new Avida's leaking. the van since early December last year. We had to cancel the Christmas school holidays and make alternate arrangements and although I understand sometimes purchases can fault, Hinterland Caravans are literally doing NOTHING to help or assist in sorting the matter out. [Name Removed] at Hinterland Caravans has only just contacted me back because I began to hound him with calls and emails to find out what was going on. To make matters worse, I have had my request to return the van refused. I'm at a loss, both in options and $!

A very costly and stressful exercise that I hope my google review will help others avoid.

Zero stars for customer service Zero stars for quality Zero stars for communication

A great experience start to finish – We picked up our van yesterday and the team at Hinterland have been nothing short of incredible with their support and attention to our requirements. Special shout out to AJay, Amanda and Maegan for going above and beyond with our questions and clarifications as part of the ordering process. Handover was informative by Steve and we really feel supported if we have any questions as we move forward on our shakedown trip. Highly recommended!

Happy Hunter – We drove 6hrs from NSW to see 3 particular vans only to find that they weren't what we were looking for until we met Rian, he helped us find our van. We were very demanding and Rian handled us with a smile on his face. When it came to hand over our van it was pouring with rain and Rian hooked us up properly so we didn't have to get wet. We will definitely recommend Hinterland caravans in our future. Thanks again Rian. Show details

Happy happy – Yet another positive experience with Hinterland Morriset!! We had two minor issues pop up on our maiden voyage with our Urban van and were readily accommodated by Hinterland Morriset in transit. Issues were promptly rectified and tested, and we were back on the road in no time. Thanks to Troy and his team for accommodating us at short notice and the professional experience, advice and friendly chit chat. We were treated as valued customers.

Wish we'd read these reviews before giving them our money. We were promised a January delivery, signing up in November. calls or return our messages. Then they kept putting mistakes through for our Great Aussie Caravan. At first we thought the caravan company were not competent and kept getting it wrong. Then we realized the dealer was feeding mistakes to the company, so that every revision had mistakes in it. By the 4th revision we finally realized what was going on. They used the mistakes as a reason to delay the delivery date...When we spoke to other dealerships for Great Aussie they said a January delivery date was impossible when signing up in November. It seemed like they used this as a strategy to get business over the other dealerships, and were most like going to keep pushing back our build delivery date to April which was the next available build slot Australia-wide. They didn't care we had booked flights and accommodation for January already to collect the caravan. When we asked for our deposit back due to them not being able to provide the January delivery date as promised, they tried to withhold a large amount of our deposit. Be very careful to sign up to Hinterland Caravans. Customer Service changes dramatically once they have your money locked in.

The Australian Caravan industry has not self regulated and have churned out many caravans of low standard, many of which are poorly manufactured by unqualified workers. When the inevitable faults manifest, the majority of dealers are totally unscrupulous and just duck and weave. They fob customers off because they know its a long stressful process for a customer to seek redress. Hinterland Caravans are a prime example.

Disgraceful – After extending patience with little outcomes, the decision to write the review has occurred. time would be approximately 3 months, extensive delays occurred. After planning for a trip which allowed additional wait time, it took numerous calls, emails and visits to follow up. The correspondence with the General Manager was rude throughout this period. As a result of the delays, we took possession of the van the day before we were leaving for our trip which caused rush and undue stress. A phone call followed where I was instructed to check shackles as there had been a recall (an oversight on the behalf of hinterland - this should have been inspected by them).

We left on our trip without the use of the stove as the internal gas fitting was tagged “do not use” due to the recall of the stove. This issue was not discussed during the van inspection. Following a phone call to enquire about this discovery, we were informed that once the ACCC investigation was complete, we would receive a phone call from hinterland to provide an update regarding the use of the stove. We travelled for the first 2 weeks believing that we were unable to use the stove. It took me to make a call to hinterland to receive notification that we could have in fact been using the stove as the investigation was complete and the stove was deemed safe for use (2 weeks without the use of the stove was inconvenient).

Numerous faults with the van were discovered.

Hinterland were notified by email, with the inclusion of photos of the warranty issues that were discovered. A delay of 2 months occurred with having the van inspected. This followed numerous email and phone correspondence on my behalf to follow up.

The van was taken to hinterland to undergo the repairs, most of which were attended to with the use of silicone as a solution. We were notified that the van was ready for collection. At the point of collection it was discovered that the remaining warranty issues had not been attended to. Some of these issues relate to faulty appliances and tap ware. Hinterland were aware of all issues prior to this point and received photographic evidence.

Again, numerous follow up emails have occurred to no avail. At this point, 3 months have passed and we still await rectification of the warranty issues.

Correspondence is poor and regularly with significant delay. The General Manager incorrectly addressed me by name throughout phone discussion on numerous occasions and the delay involved with attending to warranty repairs is disgraceful.

The purchase of a brand new van was not a positive interaction and the warranty repairs predominantly remain unaddressed. I would certainly recommend to shop elsewhere.

Exceptionally poor service in fact no service – Lost a sale due to not approaching prospective purchasers. After my husband and I had been in the yard for a good 15 mins still not approached by any sales staff but yet we looked across to the office and clearly it cud be seen 3 female staff were standing around laughing which clearly meant they were not interested in helping anyone nor wanting a sale. We then proceeded to walk up the ramp to the vans up the back and still not approached by anyone.

Unfortunately it shows because caravans are in great demand sales people no longer have to work hard so therefore this reflects back to the company. It’s one thing to purchase a van but the sales & service has to be there from the beginning to the end and after. Such a shame as the next caravan show is just around the corner and of course the sales will be there but it’s not the true service.

Hinterland Caravans are not to be trusted, they will rip you off, shonky dangerous workmanship – I had bought a caravan in Qld and needed to change it over to NSW rego. I went to Hinterland Caravans at Morriset near Newcastle , without going into all the details they ripped me off, said it needed new tyres ,they looked fine to me they also said I needed a new battery , did I ? They also charged me $300 for cleaning the van which wasn't dirty.… Read more

I have since had someone look at the tyres and they are fine but they are not new, they did not replace any tyres and the battery is most likely the one it had when I bought it. I found them to have a standover attitude when I queried the bill, I felt intimidated and they knew how to take advantage of an woman on her own. I also asked them to replace the trailer plug which was the wrong type and I needed a 7 pin , and they did replace it. Fast forward a few months down on the south coast, I checked to make sure my lights were working on the van and found that one of the blinkers on the van wasn't working, a friend of a friend who had worked for a caravan dealership for 15 years offered to check out the van for me. Upon taking the casing off the plug we could see all of the wires were hardly touching , so dangerous the whole thing had to be redone, they didn't even bother taping up the cable so all the wires are exposed. Any of these connections could have failed, the brakes on the van , my electric tow brakes ! this could have caused an accident a bad one, I cant believe that they were so slack. Also the fuses in the van were the wrong size too, and I've had problems with the electrics in the van there are 10 amp fuses where there should be 3 amp which has burnt out some of the wiring. I asked them to check everything! their workmanship is so shonky, the Manager John is a liar, don't get any repairs done by them and I certainly wouldn't buy anything from them. Absolutely no integrity I don't understand how they are still in business.

We rang the manager asking how the van was going & he told us that he had someone cleaning the van all day. We drove the 2hrs back to Morisset to pick van back up. We had a look inside van & most of the silastic was cleaned off, but the shower wasn't cleaned, it still had silastic all over it & there was a burn mark on the lino near the toilet. When i informed the manager his reply to me was" i can't be F@$%$# ever where". They don't care because they have your money!!! We got excuse after excuse. We did get compensated for the wrong kitchen, after many phone calls to them. What really ticks me off is that they have never apologised or said sorry for their stuff ups.
