Great car with a weak air conditioner – We decided to down size from our bigger SUV to something a little smaller and more economical as we are now empty nesters. We travel regionally and need an SUV for ground clearance as well as day to day metro driving. We bought a 2013 Honda CRV VTI-L AWD with just over 100k's. It has the 2.4 litre engine and 5 speed auto. The car is easy and… Read more ·  1

light to drive with good quality build and comfortable leather seats. There is ample space front & back and when you drop the back seats they drop flat. THE GOOD: The Engine: This is a strong and reliable engine and we get around 8 litres per 100km on highway and around 10 litres per 100km around metro driving. Given this an AWD we are pleased with the real world fuel economy using normal unleaded. The 5 speed auto works well with the car (I'm not a big fan of CVT gearboxes) Our mechanic says they are easy to service and reliable. The Body: The build quality is good as you would expect from a Japanese brand (although the car is made in Thailand) Technology: For a 2013 build the car has Front & Rear Sensors, Reversing Camera, Satnav, Bluetooth, Heated front seats, Sunroof, Airbags and ABS etc.... Again we are happy with the tech. Yes the Satnav is outdated but we also have an external GPS that we use THE NOT SO GOOD: The car drives well but there is a little more road noise than our previous car. It's not bad or raucous but we notice it. The Aircon: Its not leaking. It's not damaged. It's just weak compared to other Japanese cars we have owned in the past and if you read some Honda Aircon reviews you will understand what I am saying

In closing. This particular model won Car of the Year in 2013 and we know why. Its a great car and I would have rated it as excellent except for the Aircon. If you are looking at a Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX5, Mitsubishi Outlander or Nissan X-Trail (All great cars as well), please put this on your shopping list, especially the VTI-L. It is worth the drive. Good luck in your search for a car

Wonderful car and wonderful dealership – What can I say, the CR-V RE Luxury is SUCH a nice car to drive. We bought an older car (2012 model) because we dont do a lot of driving any more and needed a car my wife and I can both drive and as she is tiny and I am huge, it wasnt easy to find one we could both handle and fit into. This particular car was almost immaculate with barely a mark… Read more

on it and runs so quietly it is just a p[pleasure to drive. The RE Luxury model has all the bells and whistles including heated front seats for cold mornings, fog lamps, leather seats and door trim, a 6 stack CD player and a sun roof that magically becomes a moon roof after the sun sets!!!

But it is the drive that is what makes this car one of the best we have owned. So smooth on the road and so easy to handle with excellent space behind the wheel for a larger person and yet the ability for the seat to move forward and up enough for a smaller driver to still be able to see over the dashboard and through the back window.

For what it is worth, the dealer who supplied the car (Country Cars in Port Macquarie) was absolutely brilliant, giving a great trade on our old car and lowering the purchase price enough to get us into this perfect car.

It isnt often that car buying is such a positive experience but 5 stars is not enough for this dealer and this excellent car

Poor quality of build and parts – If your reading this and thinking of purchasing a Honda DONT! They are not as good as they used to be. The quality of build and parts are disappointing. After sales service is patchy depending on what dealer you go to. In short, buy a Lexus, Toyota or Mazda. This is a summary of my 5 years of ownership. I bought this car brand new from Larke… Read more

Hoskins Honda Homebush (now Suttons) with full options and all accessories in the brochure and added dealership offers. Shopped around for the right price then settled on $48k. Which is steep, but I did get the luxury version, fully optioned with ADAS and all accessories.

Doesn’t come with boot tray protector (needed - trust me) and bonnet protector are a must as the paint is soft as! Shortly after I picked it up, went for a drive down to Melbourne I noticed large chips out of the bonnet paintwork, which I don’t remember going through loose stones and didn’t go through unsurfaced roads.

Had front speaker housing and speaker replaced twice and rattle out of front passenger side door looked at twice. Dealer claimed to have replaced parts and fixed problems but they didn’t. Got Honda Australia involved and they gave the dealer a kick up the butt and then they fixed the speaker housing but not rattle.

In short, the car is ok, not great considering it’s top spec for the model, service from Honda Australia when I flagged the problems was amazing. The dealer was terrible. They have only now fixed some problems I’ve had since I picked it up new in 2015 - it’s now 2018. Still can’t believe that the dealer broke the front passenger seat front tweeter cover and just glued it back together, so on the first hot day after I picked up my car it fell off. After I had to wait 6 months for the part to be shipped from Japan (which was nonsense as they didn’t even replace the part, just glued it onto my car).

Don’t buy from Larke Hoskins, now called Sutton’s Homebush Honda. There dealer servicing section is terrible!

Cruise Control speed limiter only works on uphill or completely flat. Any decline, even the slightest angle, and I’ll be going 80km in a 60km zone. Even with the cruise control speed limiter on!

Persistent cabin rattle in front left (passenger seat / door) area. I have had since brand new still there. Despite 2 dealers looking into it. At my expense. Sutton’s had my car for a whole day then the mechanic took me for a drive, didn’t go above 30km (drove really slow) and didn’t notice knocking. Driving home from dealership (going 60km) and knocking was still there. Dodgy guys... poor form.

Infotainment system is clunky and dated. Looking at ways to replace as unit heats up a lot anyway and on hot days, I get scared of fire danger as it runs that hot! Maps cannot be updated and is now unusable. Paying extra for GPS was a waste of money.

UPDATE: September 2018 @ 70,000km: Alternator completely failed and needed to be replaced. It was only 4 years old and cost me $1600 to replace and fit. The Air Compressor also had failed and also needed to be replaced. $2400 to replace and fit. None of this was covered by Honda or the dealer. Battery replaced as well, $300 because the faulty alternator (apparently) had wrecked it. All OEM tyres due for replacement (Dunlop SP Maxx 050). Replaced with Pirelli Scorpion All Seasons $2000.

UPDATE: November 2019 @ 85,000km: New Alternator has failed and needs to be replaced AGAIN. Lasted 14 months - official Honda part, all work done by dealer service department. Battery is wrecked and replaced as well. Replaced with a $400 Optima battery. New Alternator is on order through Great Western Honda. Another $1600 that I have to spend. Left passenger side lane watch mirror camera stopped working. No damage or impact. Quoted $1100 to replace.

NOTE: I’ve had my car for 5 years now. Spent over $12,000 in servicing and parts replacement so far. At this rate I’m scared of how much the next 5 years of ownership is going to cost me. I want to sell it, but ethically I don’t want to just offload problems on to someone else. As far as usage goes, I don’t drive it hard and don’t have any devices charging off it, not even phones, cameras or GPS’s. This will be my last Honda and last non-electric vehicle.

Best car I've ever owned – We've just sold our 2013 (MY2014) Honda CR-V 2.4litre petrol AWD after nine years ownership, and just over 200,000 kilometers. For functionality, durability, and driveability, it has been, without question, the best car I've ever owned - and that's in more than 40 years of car ownership. Even allowing for the compromises made for an SUV, it has… Read more

still been an outstanding vehicle. I have been absolutely delighted with owning it.

Although it had an AWD capability, this was only ever put to use on one occasion (transitting about ten kilometers of very deep, soft sand) and it performed very well; that is to say, with four adults on board we could have easily become bogged, but the AWD kicked in and dragged us through. Without even deflating the tyres. Impressive.

But that is not it's forte. There are seriously better off road vehicles available, if that is your thing. The CR-V is at its best on made roads and in the urban jungle. Even as a country tourer it excelled. Our car racked up many of its kilometers on day long trips (600 kilometers each way) back and forth to the country visiting family. Not the most comfortable car, by far, however, with a full load it rode well, was economic (7L/100k average), and we'd arrive at our destination in good shape with little travel fatigue.

In the urban environment, the CR-V was the perfect 'workhorse'; be it the school run, grocery shopping, towing a trailer, commuting, it just rose to the challenge and delivered. Good manoeuvrability, good visibility, good performance when needed, and all delivered in an unstressed and competent manner.

Reliability, in the well deserved tradition of Honda's, was near perfect over its 200,000 kilometers. The only issue we had was an electrical 'gremlin' resulting in the battery running flat several times. This was traced to a faulty relay for the air conditioning power (it failed to switch off, even after the engine was stopped, hence the flat battery). Very easily repaired with a new (aftermarket) relay replacing the dud in the fuse box - literally a five minute task, and the fuse box even has its own fuse pullers to make the job so easy.

We adhered reasonably closely to the recommended service intervals, but didn't necessarily use the Honda dealership. This was largely a matter of cost once the car was out of warranty. Servicing costs vary widely across the industry and 'shopping around' is recommended. Some minor items, like cabin air filters and engine air filters, I did myself and saved a fortune doing so. These are simple tasks, and the Honda is so well designed, it would be difficult to get it wrong. And there are myriad on-line videos to show you what to do if you're not normally given to DIY mechanical work.

Consumables were exceptional - tyres were changed at 80,000, and 160,000 kilometers. Even then, they were only at the first wear indicators. We generally ran the tyres at slightly above (about 2 psi) recommended pressure without getting a harsh ride or excessive road noise. Brake pads were not replaced until 200,000 kilometers, and the disks themselves were just skimmed as they were hardly worn. The tyre and brake wear - which is good by any measure - is a reflection of the amount of long distance driving done, as well as the fairly modest demands we made of the car when city driving.

Had we not had a need for a bigger vehicle - we now have a people mover - we had anticipated keeping the Honda for a good few years more, and many thousands of kilometers longer. Come the time to downsize again, we will seriously consider what is on offer from Honda.

So glad we made our decision on CR-V I've had this car now for 3 years with no regrets. I love my Honda! – I'd only had five cars in my life and the models were Toyota Corolla, Diahatsu Rocky, Diahatsu Sirion, Diahatsu Terios and Hyundai Getz. So I felt that at the ripe old age of none-of-your-business it was time for a change. I recently became a part of a blended relationship with three children under 18 to cart around so we (the new man and I)… Read more

began to look for a car that drove like a small car but handles itself like a larger one with comfort. I really only test drove one car - that was my black 2014 CRV, who I affectionately call Bubba. Bubba impressed me from the get go and I didn't look back from there. Since then Bubba has been our touring car with trips to Tasmania, the Blue Mountains, several North Coast and Batemans Bay trips (we're on the South Coast) and he has handled magnificently. There are ample charging ports for the stuck to the phone teens and the IPad charger dock in the second glovebox is a blessing. There is room for three in the back without an issue and my 6 foot partner has plenty of leg room. Bubba handles like a dream and parking is an ease with the reversing warning beeper. I would have liked to invest in the luxury model to get a reversing camera though but hey, you deal. Only let down is the soft quality of the paintwork. lf you leave bird poop on the paint too long it eats away at it. That's a downer for me. I would, however, recommend this car for those transitioning from a smaller car (like I did from a Getz) to a mid size SUV. Also getting items like bumper protectors, car seat covers and the like is a hassle as many of those items are not stock. Couldn't get a bumper protector at all and had to order in seat covers. Replacement windscreen washers are pricy as you have to buy the entire head of the wiper as well... sets you back a pretty penny. Final minus is the in screen navigation, which mine was upgraded too, once installed it seems flimsy on the reception with regular drops out of stations we can get with a standard radio and aerial and android phone will not save details of downloaded phone book to it so I have to install phone book every time.

Disappointment – Do your research before buying as you will not be made fully aware of problematic items buy sales people 1/ Fuel economy is 11.5 lt/100km. slowing the vehicle.

3/ Fuel tank is too small, especially with poor fuel economy.

4/ If you have a puncture, you cannot put two new tyres on one axle if the other axle has tyres with 20,000 km

wear. This can result in destroying your differential. (You won’t find this in the small print.)

5/ I traded in an 8 year old car a bought a new CRV with 20 year old air conditioning. At best it is adequate, but

not nearly as good as my old car.

6/ I bought a limited edition vehicle which was delivered without the limited edition badge highlighted in the

glossy brochure as a feature. It was almost a year after I purchased the vehicle that I decided I should get

this badge on the car. I took the car to Honda who perhaps understandably reacted as though I might be

trying something dodgy but conceded that yes it should have a badge. After assurances that it would be

sorted, I am still waiting over a month later.

For the record, my previous vehicle was a Honda Accord which I was very happy with and was the main reason I bought another Honda.

Fantastic Car All Round & Cheap to Maintain – My CRV is now a few years old and I can safely say that it was a great decision to purchase it. The car drives very smoothly and has maintained a 9.9l/100k fuel efficiency which is pretty decent for an SUV. Plenty of useful features such as the storage compartments and makes good use of the dashboard. My only complaints are that the car system… Read more

Good all rounder, quality finish – We have the 2.4 litre 4WD version. In short, it does everything well, but is perhaps not a class-leader in any area? True to reputation, it's very well finished, and feels like quality inside. It's a nice place to be, and feels better made than some other popular SUVs. It's super-practical. Plenty of room, nice to sit in the rear (for adults)… Read more

and good space in the boot area. Lots of handy options. The two rear camera's are handy, and folding mirrors and the auto-dimming rear mirror is a must - esp the auto dim mirror - all cars should have one! The audio system is ok, a little finicky really.

On a trip it's great. The tank size is not very large and a limiting factor perhaps. The motor has plenty of go but not much torque. Any hill will see it change down but this is just an observation really. Around town our economy I would rate as ordinary. On a trip it's great, but most things are. Keyless entry is great of course, and it doesn't have stop start which I think is fabulous as I don't like that. It requires a service every six months, which is not so good. But, Honda are good to deal with so I can live with that.

I think it's better than an X-trail, better than the Korean options and better than a Forester. I would guess the Mazda CX5 is better but I haven't driven one. As a used buy I would recommend one, although the economy in heavy traffic might be a drawback. In moderate traffic it's fine. A nice looking car and easy to live with in the real world. Actually I’ve just taken it down to three stars based on its performance with four people onboard. It needs more torque!

Fuel economy is around 9.0l to 100km in city driving.

The car has been trouble free and now after just a few years, a few wear and tear things as you would expect are showing, such as tires, and perhaps the clutch which is a little premature.

The base model did not come with a rear cargo cover which is poor of Honda, you need to pay extra for this. However is does come with a full size spare which is a rarity these days.
