Used it twice, the second time it collapsed in mild to moderate wind and two of the four poles (fibreglass part) just crushed and split. We like the size great for our family, but two days in a row it collapsed the second time it after getting it back up we realised it was stuffed, ruined our coast holiday. Didn't even make a full two weeks of use. Set up was not instant up as suggested took more like 30 minutes. Show details

We bought this tent 7 years ago for our family of five, when the kids were very young. We've taken it camping once or twice a year since then. It takes us about 30 mins to fully set up, and about the same to pack away. It has kept us dry in some very stormy weather with strong winds. The three room arrangement is practical with parents at one… Read more

end, three kids in the other, and luggage etc in the middle. Ours has no lights, which Coleman has addressed with the newer models. It's still going strong, with only a couple of very minor tears in the fly and some discolouration on the fly from mould once when we packed it away still damp. We've had incredible value from this tent, considering what we otherwise would've paid for a camper-trailer, caravan or holiday apartments.

Great quality – This is fantastic. I cannot rave about it enough. I am a single parent and I can put this tent up on my own!! It goes up easy, there is a Instructional video that made it look so easy. I have used this 4 times already, and it's brilliant. Such good quality, not plasticy. Last time used we had loads of rain!! Not one drip inside the tent, it was fantastic in the rain!!

Structurally poor. 3 poles snapped on first use after moderate wind – Very challenging to set up with 2 people in moderate windy conditions. Pegs very thin and didn't stay in ground. Tie down rope tore away from tent. Not even 24hrs of use and 3 of the wooden poles snapped causing major tears in the fly. Don't waste your money or time. Show details

Brand new with several inverted poles. Useless Product – My recent purchase of the Coleman 10P Dark Tent has been an utter disappointment. 2 out of the 4 quick set tent poles which are permanently fixed to the device had been installed back to front rendering the tent completely useless. "Instant up frame for simple setup in under 3 minutes" took 3 hours to setup sourcing a tool to remediate! Pic1 -… Read more

Furthest tent pole is installed incorrectly. Closest is correct, notice the locking pin is inaccessible as it is now on the internal side without a guide hole.

Pic2 - Picture of the faulty tent pole, the flat side of the pole clearly on the opposite side to the beveled side plastic guide.

This required tools not on my person, a first camp experience with minors and was a bitter disappointment.

I bought the coleman dark room 10 person tent last October. It lasted only 3 months – I bought the coleman dark room 10 person tent last October. It lasted only 3 months. In the first week it begun to rot and completely changed color. The weather tech coating begun to peal off, the cords all rotted in the sun, the main screen side on the zip stitch line rotted and that side of the tent all down the stitch line ripped. Coleman refused to honor the warranty. Show details

Perfect for our family of 5! – We had been looking for a tent to fit 2 adults and 3 children for months. We stumbled across tents with darkened fabrics, which we were hooked on, and hence, narrowed down our search substantially. Our main requirements were: Rooms wide enough for our 3 children to sleep next to each other; Room for our queen sized mattress; Space for our luggage;… Read more

and A large verandah spanning the width of the tent. The Coleman Northstar Instant Up 10 Lighted DarkRoom Tent ticked all of those boxes, and more! We purchased single air mattresses from Kmart (for only $7.50 each!!) which meant we could comfortably fit 3 across one end of the tent for the kids. Up the other end, we had our Coleman double high queen air mattress which was also a great fit, and very comfy. This allowed the centre room to be a dressing space and storage for our bags, and also had enough room on the floor for a game of Monopoly! The inbuilt lights were amazing! They were definitely bright enough, and the soft glow switch was fantastic during the middle of the night. We used a power bank to plug the USB port into, instead of buying big D batteries. Our power bank seemed to lose no charge, suggesting the lights draw next to no power. Set up was a joke - so easy and fast! Actually enjoyable, and definitely fun because there was no hassle, and we could look forward to sitting with a glass of bubbles in no time! The fly was the most time consuming, but was certainly not frustrating. Everything lined up and was nice and taut once we had finished. Zips glided smoothly and nothing grabbed. I would say total set up time for our first use was about 12 minutes. The Darkroom feature is very cool, and very dark! However, it wasn’t very dark for us as we had one whole side of the tent up as an awning, which is where the Darkroom technology is. For it to be almost pitch black, you can’t have the awning up. This didn’t bother us, but would be great if you could have the best of both worlds (awning up and the tent still be dark). Power inlet openings into the tent could be better placed, or have more of them. They are only in the centre room, but I believe an option in each end would be beneficial also. The awning/verandah is very comprehensive. We had one end closed in where our fridge and pantry were, which was great for privacy and a wind break. My only gripe with the verandah is that it is very low, especially at the ends. Not an issue, but extra height would have been great! Pack up was easy, and there was plenty of room in the bag to fit everything in. The bag is heavy once it’s all packed up, but manageable. All in all, this tent has reignited our love for camping. We are so happy our family of 5 fits in it well, and comfortably - not cramped. Thanks Coleman!

Awesome tent – Great tent for the family with the three rooms allowing beds and clothes/changing room. Easy to set up once mastering the pole twists which most think are fitted backwards. Lights are a great touch allowing playing games when The weather turns bad. Had the tent up in extreme wind and rain and didn’t miss a beat. Had for last 5yrs and only now have to replace the fly due to a rip. Will be buying replacement and continue with the same.

4 adult, 2 children...PERFECT!!! – Prior to purchase, read every review and if not for a friend owning the 4 person, I would've skipped this tent and made a huge mistake. For the nuts n bolts. pooling, no water ingress. In summer we are spoilt and run an A/C unit with a fan on the other end. Thing can hold 25 degrees inside while pushing high 30's outside (dont ask about power consumption please). The lighting feature is awesome. No more looking for torches. Tap and your able to enjoy three levels of brightness. For the adults we fit 2 of the biggest camp cots we could find, and they are huge! We have 2 adult cots in the middle with very little extra room, but can stand up on the cots to change and still have head room at 5'10", and the outer room with 2 cots has room for packs and such. The othetside has 2 standard cots with room for ac unit, projector, small table and heaps of luggage. Dont be put off from reviews about packing it up. Watch how it unrolls the 1st time and duplicate that. Take down is less than 10 minutes. Use rope to tie it all up and slip into bag with ease. Those who can't have user error, not design fault. Poles can be tricky if you rush it. They rotate, so think it through. Easy peasy.

Good tent, however a few things to consider – We love this tent, in particular the room space and veranda option. Great ventilation options and height. However there are a few things to consider before buying it. Firstly be prepared to peg down up to 50 pegs, can be tough work if you come across dry land. Also when setting up the poles can be a bit tricky, they get stuck or they are hard to… Read more

put to the correct position. If you don't get it right, it basically stuffs it all up and you need to start again. Also rolling it up to pack down can be difficult as the instant polls can cross over making it tough to roll up. However overall a good tent that deals with heavy winds and rain with ease

Had potential but disappointing – Has some nice features but I don’t recommend. Biggest issue is that the large awning leaks through the awning fly screens and zippers when it rains. The side of the tent and anything under the awning will get wet. Water also gets inside the tent. Spoke to Coleman and they said the awning can’t be used in the rain! Major design flaw. Used for a 1 week camping trip and returned for a refund. Show details

Terrible !!!! – I bought this tent for my daughter and her kids for Xmas and decided to give it a trial run before we go camping NEXT WEEK. After 4 hours of attempting to get it to work, AND, having to revers all the poles that were in backwards, the fibreglass bits would NOT stay together and wouldn’t hold the tent up. It’s going straight back to the store !! I just hope I can find something within a week that is suitable. NOT HAPPY JAN !!!!!!!!!! Show details

Do not buy this tent – The first time we went to set up the tent the poles had been put together back-to-front so both ends of the tent could not erect properly. Love the tent but some design issues – We really like the size and ease of set up of the tent. Couple of issues some have already mention. When it rains the water leaks through the windows when the front verandah is up. The water also pools on the awning. No matter how much we try to stretch it. Being a family tent. I also don't like the main doors. They should all be "D" doors… Read more

like the side and internal doors. So parents can put the zip high enough so that the younger kids can't open it themselves and let bugs in or escape when they aren't suppose to. It also doesn't last as long when the kids start to use it. So it should be out of the way.

Shame about some design features – Loved how easy this tent was to set up. Very comfortable to sleep in, even in hot weather. Great options for large front awning. Negatives: - rain leaks through windows on front awnings, and pools between awning and tent, no way to avoid. - one screw in main pole snapped after 1st use, very difficult to fix ourselves. - after 2nd use, small holes… Read more

Coleman have offered full refund after 12 months of owning the tent. Hoping the newer version has addresses these design flaws because we have really loved this tent otherwise.

Good size but rips in rain – Good size and main tent was easy to put up- the fly is a whole nother story/ so confusing. everything. After the rain I also notice that the top of the fly that is ment to be black inside now looks like we are having a night under the stars, as there is numerous matchstick head sized holes in it from the rain. Also the side of the tent and flooring also ripped. Also one of the tent pole legs snapped and on another one that silver clicker button (you press in to collapse tent) came off so now one leg doesn’t stay in place. Quite annoyed that I paid $900 for this and it is only 8 months old.

very comfortable for 2 adults and small kids. Darkroom feature is fantastic and really does keep the inside pitch black even in daylight. I didn’t use the supplied pegs as they look pretty basic. Very weak frame, structure damaged by not very strong wind – I'm very disappointed with this Northstar 10P instant tent. When there was no wind, it's fine and did the job. But the upper section poles (3 of 4!) had been broken by just a normal strength wind with few blows, (the wind even didn't blow away my hat!). holiday earlier. We are lucky enough that there were a nice fella who kindly offered us his backup trailer tent for that night, saved my kids from sleeping in the rain. Love those Aussie guys and girls helped us organised the mess site.

On the tent's bag it said it has been tested in wind of 100 km ph. Pure nonsense. For the premium price I supposed the top quality, not this crap. Never touch Coleman tent again.

Intent buyer beware: It said it's been discontinued by Coleman however this model is still wide available from stores. Don't be fooled by the attractive discount. Lesson learned the hard way.

Shocking in wind!!!! – The structure of the 10p gold instant up tent is horrific. Top poles bent and points that lock broke when a bit of wind came through. Pegs are flimsy to say the least and bend instantly. Dont waste your time!

Terrible service and poor design – We've had our Coleman Northstar for possibly 3 years, with max 6 times assembled. us to purchase replacement poles online. When stressing that we need help given multiple local thunderstorms (fortunately little wind), huge downfalls and fact that tent would fall down without being tied to the tree, they immediately wanted to cast doubt on our account and question 'maybe the poles broke in the storm'. Like others have found, rain pools on the annex toof, constantly requiring the need to displace it. Poles are terribly designed and twist very easily, contributing to the snapping issue. We fortunately got ours at a greatly reduced price and Rays have indicated they can help replace those,, but my biggest disappointment is the fact that we supported Coleman who it appears are a company that simply doesn't give a crap about you. Think very hard about purchasing this tent as the price is hard to ignore. It's that price for a readon folks and expect NO help whatsoever from Coleman if something goes wrong.

Poor construction. Poor support/customer service – Tent broke on second use. Poor construction with the tent poles. I have spoken to Coleman and their customer support is very poor. I spoke to a lady on the other line explaining to her my situation. I told her the tent was rated to 100km/hr, and the wind on that day was no where close to that speed. A gust here and there can be strong, but… Read more

the tents around me held up well. It was a clear and sunny day. 100km/hr would be considered on a stormy day. She was fixated on the fact that wind was the problem and said that it won't be covered under warranty. I emphasised the fact that [name removed] (sales rep) have assessed the tent and feel it was the the guide ropes that was the problem. Yet she was still fixated on "wind".

Furthermore, I disagree with the fact that [name removed] claimed that I did not put the guide ropes down properly. I did in fact put it all down. It took a very long time but we did it. When I took photos of the fallen tent, I was half way packing up the tent, and of course, you need to unpeg the guide ropes, hence the messy look. If I did not put it out, the those guide ropes will be rolled up into a bunch, which none were observed in the photo.

Finally, the tent pegs are poorly designed. They bend so easily.

Overall, I feel mistreated, disappointed and let down by Coleman. Their support and customer service is appalling. Despite me gathering all the evidence for them to assess, it feels like they tried to find the first observable fault and blame it on that. They refused to listen to my issues. From my experience, this is my 2nd time experiencing a faulty tent from Coleman. My friend had a faulty tent from Coleman as well.

I will not buy another Coleman product again. It has left me with a negative experience.

Good tent but a few issues that annoy – Our first large family sized tent camping experience and road trip.... the Coleman Instant Up Northstar Darkroom is a very good tent. Very easy and quick to erect and equally easy to store. Large spacious rooms and great design around the full length veranda. The Darkroom works and is definitely worth the extra dollars. OK here come the issues… Read more

that reduced the experience....

1. the pegs as supplied are rubbish especially for a tent this size. We invested $120 to replace all the pegs supplied with ones that can do the job

2. The veranda poles as supplied are under spec for the job. During a minor storm the poles failed and caused two of the brass O-ring fittings in the fly sheet to rip loose.... we bought new upgraded poles at a cost of $110. We are looking to get the fly sheet O-rings repaired under warranty

3. Perhaps the biggest surprise was that one of the main instant up poles fibre glass sections came out of the main frame.... will be looking to have this repaired under warranty

Overall the tent performed well but pegs, poles and fly sheets should not fail so my customer experience wasn’t great, in fact well and truly diminished

Would I recommend this tent? .... maybe but Coleman need to rethink some of the components and up the QA/QC processes

Great tent with a few major design faults – This is a great tent however there are a few major design faults. When the awning is up the rain pools in the middle of the anex in between the tent & the poles despite how tight you have it. We have only had the tent for 3 years and used it about 5 times for short trips but the seal on one section is now leaking. For such an expensive tent you would really expect that the leaking awning would have considered.
