Have 2, 2015 with 320K and 2023 with 5K as I don't use it much- prefer the old one which I didn't sell as it's more user friendly. Both are the most basic model, plain White. The rule for hassle free reliability is to buy the most base model. No climate control or tailgate issues likey in the 2023 as some people describe- it hasn't got them to go… Read more

wrong. The 2015 has been ok. Now has a very slight sweating from transfer case seal and steer pump, but no need to touch them, maybe for a long time yet. Clutch action is still excellent after 320K. Every last other detail on the car is in perfect order.

Had to twist arms a bit to get the new knuckles done by the dealer on the 2025, but all done. Car seems fine. Only driven once a fortnight as per dealer instructions, and no battery issues at all, as per other comments. I do keep the keys well over 10m away.

Different opinions out there on how Isuzu Australia fulfills statutory Legislated warranty. I have found them quite ok but with a bit of legal encouragement in one case. People with an honest statutory warranty claim should not be afraid to start legal action, but the best approach is to try and see both sides of an issue and try and reach a sensible compromise, which can make life simpler.

The best vehicle l have owned – I purchased a 2015 Isuzu mux new & can only have positive comments for this vehicle, having travelled 175000 km to date & have had no problems so far, the only thing I’ve replaced are tyres (3 sets )& back pads (1 set ) in the last nine years. Sure it is a bit agricultural compared to other suvs out there but it is comfortable, powerful, & so… Read more

far has gone everywhere l have pointed it, towed everything l have put behind it & done time on & off road regularly. I have a mate who has the latest mux & l don’t like the way it is telling you if you’re going over the white line getting too close etc if you need all that tech to drive a car you should not be driving, l know these can be cancelled but why pay for them in the first place.

A solid 7-seat off-road SUV but it lacks on-road refinement – The MU-X is utilitarian with a capital U. First and foremost, it's an off-roader, and then it's a family SUV. This means it has a tough exterior to last against the elements and a robust interior to weather against dirt, dust and kids. Externally, the MU-X has a similar build quality to the D-MAX, so it's definitely going to stand the test of… Read more

time running across both tarmac and mud ruts.

For added longevity, there are factory bash plates fitted underneath the MU-X that protect some of its vitals when you manage to drive over larger obstacles.

This isn’t the strong suit for the last of this generation’s MU-X. The model I had was the MU-X in LS-U 4x4 trim, which is priced from $58,302 drive-away.

There are many competitors on the market that offer a similar value proposition, but do a better job at justifying their comparable price tag - take for example the new Toyota Fortuner.

This MU-X is missing out on key bits of safety equipment and technology which are now standard on cars that are $20,000 cheaper than this. Blind spot monitoring and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto are key omissions that make daily driving a little less enjoyable.

As for maintaining this SUV, the MUX comes with a 6 year/150,000km warranty which will cover you for most of your ownership.

Isuzu also covers capped price servicing for up to 7 years, helping bring additional peace of mind if you plan on buying an MU-X that’s a few years old.

Unfortunately for those who prefer a quieter ride around town, under acceleration, the 3.0L diesel four-cylinder makes itself known to all the occupants. More so than other diesel motors, the engine sound bleeds into the cabin is quite noticeable. It’s not a deafening sound, but it’s going to come at a slight shock for those used to riding in quieter diesels.

Once you’re up to a consistent speed, the four-cylinder audibly settles and you’re greeted with the benefits of a diesel engine whilst out on the open road. Revs drop, and the cabin of the MU-X becomes a whole lot more relaxed.

The audio system in the MU-X isn’t disappointing despite its age. There’s a ‘surround sound’ feature in the form of downward-facing speakers placed on the roof, providing a richer sound, especially for the front passengers.

There are four-disc brakes on all four wheels.

I’m a firm believer that road-focused 4x4s should have disc brakes all-around rather than drums on the rear wheels. This is because you’re more likely to be towing and carrying less than the lower-trims would be. Despite not having disc brakes, you can still tow up to 3 tonnes braked.

Braking in the MU-X was excellent for a two-tonne SUV, with a relatively progressive pedal feel enabling you to drive smoothly and come to a stop with relative precision.

Unlike the current D-MAX, the MU-X is carrying the older version of Isuzu’s 3.0L diesel motor. In this generation, the MU-X is dealing with 130kW @ 3600rpm and 430Nm @ 2000-2200rpm.

Off the mark, the MU-X certainly picks up the pace. Although a 0-100km/h figure would land in the realm of nearing 10 seconds, the real-world performance of this motor never leaves you feeling like this SUV is underpowered.

Instead, the MU-X is able to comfortably move around town without the need to be buried in the accelerator pedal. On the highway, you won’t be left behind as overtaking is effortless thanks to all that torque.

When you’re out in the stickier stuff, the MU-X in low-range 4x4 mode provides confidence that you’ll make it out alive.

With what feels like a precise delivery of power, the MU-X never slips or faults when putting its power to the dirt. I was met with impressive power-delivery which only encouraged me to find more difficult terrain to put this SUV through.

The 6-speed transmission used in the MU-X is able to seamlessly shift, even at low speeds, without ever feeling strained. My only complaint is the speed at which it shifts, which can feel a little slow.

Built on the D-MAX’s ladder frame chassis, but without the leaf-spring suspension, the MU-X struggles to soak up bumps as you’d expect from a 7-seater family car.

It’s apparent the MU-X can’t shake the fact that it’s a dedicated off-roader, as this suspension setup seems to give you too much feedback across tarmac. If you cross enough bumps and potholes, it seems to really upset the ride of the MU-X and can cause passengers to complain about the ride of the car.

On smoother sections of road, the MU-X settles and can glide across most highways with ease. When you start to hit corners, you’re met with the surprise that the MU-X can handle turns relatively well; a pleasant trade-off for those around-town jitters.

As quickly as you’re impressed with how this SUV can prevent itself from sinking too much in the corners, it's dampened by the slow steering ratio.

This slow ratio keeps you busy and shuffling your hands as soon as a corner progresses into anything sharper than 100 degrees.

There’s a 65L tank on board, and it’ll cost you just around $90 to fill from empty. Claimed total fuel consumption is 8.3L/100km.

The MU-X didn’t have an onboard L/100km computer, instead it spat out km per litre of fuel, converting my average meant I was closer to 10L/100km.

The inside of the MU-X offers no luxury extras.. It’s about simply offering you everything you need, not everything you might want.

The touch-screen looks like it was taken from 2011, as it has basic navigation and media utility, and of-course a glaring omission of any options for phone mirroring. There’s bluetooth available at least, but it makes changing playlists or podcasts a little more difficult.

The MU-X makes do with a minimum boot space of 235L (with the middle row up) and a maximum of 1830L with all seats stowed away.

The manual operation of the boot in the MU-X is normally passable on a car like this, however due to the height that this tailgate opens to, children who can’t reach the boot will need you to exit the vehicle to close it.

There’s a thoughtful ‘tuck and fold’ design with the middle row, which helps expand the total usable interior space of the MU-X - enough to place several push bikes in without needing to remove front wheels.

If you’re looking for a car that will be an off-road performer at its core, it’ll be hard to move past some of the deals that will be presented on the current generation as soon as the new MU-X arrives.

There is enough here to make most people happy if they’re keen on off-roading frequently and plan on making modifications to enhance the capability of the MU-X.

However, if you’re primarily looking at purchasing an MU-X for daily use in the suburbs with the occasional trip off-road, I’d pick the new MU-X.

Big vehicle with good economy and plenty of room for 7 people – I have had my December 2018 build MUX since Feb of 2019. Initial impressions of the MUX were: - good size. Plenty of room for 7 people in side or less people and plenty of storage. - 6 speed auto and diesel gives good economy along with good torque - might look big but for what it can fit into it, the vehicle is more compact than most others in… Read more

the class. - base model was great value, only 2WD but only paid $37K which is a lot less than a 4WD and no one would know otherwise. - Still has good towing ability with 3.0 litre turbo diesel.

Having jumped from an FGX XR8, I found the MUX to be more leisurely than my XR8 and a lot more economical. I have now unloaded the XR8 and use this vehicle exclusively. I use it for a daily drive and have been to the Flinders, Broken Hill and mid north wine regions. Love the economy, ground clearance, clear vision all round and rides quietly on the highway and handles good for a reasonable sized vehicle. I use it as a daily commute and in just over 2 years of driving, I have chalked up 70K kms. Works well in city traffic. Toured the Flinders Ranges in it and it was perfect. No need for 4WD and obviously being 2WD helps keep the weight down and improves the economy.

I have my vehicle serviced at 15,000 kms intervals, thus have it serviced twice yearly. "Prevention is the best cure." On the down side, there are a couple of things that I find a bit annoying: - from cold, although it starts very well, it takes a long time to warm up the engine to negate the "chatter" - brakes are not as good as the XR8, but then I am being a bit picky - rear side mirrors are terrible - the are those magnified type where "objects may appear closer than they are" - touch screen display is very average in the base unit. This really could have been improved.

Overall I am quite happy with the vehicle and would buy another in a couple of years time.

Average tow vehicle due to high gearing – I purchased a new Isuzu MU-X August 2020 as a tow vehicle on the recommendation of friends who have slightly older models; most tow much heavier caravans than mine - they say easily in 5th gear. However, it seems that the gearing of the MY-20 LS-T is too high, so what was seemed to be a perfectly good tow vehicle is extremely poor for the… Read more

purpose, lacking power at towing speed.

Older models appeared to be doing 2000 rpm at 100 kph in 5th gear which was somewhere around the maximum torque rpm and ideal for towing. The MY20 is only doing 1700 rpm at 100kph in 5th and consequently has very little power or torque at that speed and barely manages to change out of 4th gear, where it is revving, noisy and fuel inefficient. If towing in manual to reduce engine noise, there is a lot of torque converter slip which I'm told will result in overheating the transmission fluid.

Due to the high gearing it usually struggles to maintain 6th gear into a head wind, even when not towing and in manual mode there is lots of torque converter slip; it is a better proposition locked in 5th if into a head wind or attempting an undulating road.

I would suggest to those wanting a decent tow vehicle to look elsewhere than the Isuzu MU-X as this is the most disappointing vehicle I've ever purchased, and as a tow vehicle there is no comparison between the performance of the MU-X and the Holden Colorado I previously owned!

** In defence of the MU-X, I must say 2 years later that it seems to have taken 50,000 Km for the engine to loosen up, so with an ECU remap, transmission oil cooler and rear airbags fitted it is acceptable (but not brilliant) as a tow vehicle. I would now rate it at 6/10!

Basic reliable white goods on wheels – Our MUX was purchased about 2 years, 30,000 kms ago as a replacement for our 2015 Subaru Outback, itself a good car. As we needed something more appropriate to tow our camper trailer. After spending a working lifetime (35 years), driving 70 Series land cruisers and Hi Luxes around the country I knew I'd like a change from these highly capable if… Read more

somewhat uncomfortable steeds. After doing some research we decided the Isuzu Mux could be the best choice, especially after reading the user reviews in Product Review as it seemed to be the car that had least complaints, quite important when you layout $50,000+ for a new car, after all our previous vehicles Subaru, BMW 5 and Skoda had all shown to be trouble free with bulletproof reliability. The purchase itself was made easy when Wayne Phills Auto gave me a good change over price trading the Subaru in and the salesman Mark was straight forward with no sales nonsense. Our MUX LST came with the Tour Mate pack. First off I sent my wife on a I-Venture 4x4 course to demonstrate the capability of the standard car and give her some offroad experience which she loved. The car is a highly capable unit straight out of the show room as was demonstrated during a two week camping trip of the Flinders Rangers including the 80km Skytrek at Willow Springs Station among other offroad excursions which the Isuzu lapped up, although the standard side steps took a bit of a bashing, nothing that couldn't be straightend out, and the standard Dunlops handled the gnarly rocky sections no worries. Tows our one tonne camper with ease as you would expect, returning about 12L per 100kms, quite comfortable on longer drives as we had sheepskin seat covers fitted. Our little old Beagle loves the aircon outlets on the roof as well, 10/10 for the air conditioning. Interior design is basic and functional all you could need, satnav works well. Only things I would change are the standard fuel tank to the larger 116L capacity unit, change the bullbar to an all metal unit that isn't damaged as easily as the standard ally one with the plastic bits that break off when critters strike and maybe stronger side steps and a 50mm lift. Being equipped with the under stressed 4JJ3-TCX engine it should last forever so I have the upmost confidence in taking the Mux anywhere in the country more so than some of its more wizz bangy competition, would not hesitate to buy another Isuzu in its current form, all tough I'm not sure how the collaboration with Mazda will pan out with their reliability and service problems.

Had it a month starting to love it – I bought my MU-X about a month ago. The first morning I was immediately alarmed at the engine rattles. Never had a diesel before, so the rattles at cold start up gave me a fright. But after speaking to others with diesels and a month of driving it, I now understand its just "A DIESEL" its a nice car to drive and the noises are all normal. Towing… Read more

my 1500 kg boat is a dream, the car shrugged off the weight like no other car I have ever had. Hills are no barrier and it cruises comfortably with no apparent effort. The car sees predominantly freeway driving, about 1000klm a week. On the freeway its in its element, the engine noise disappears, unless you give it lots of throttle. The engine just moseys along at around 1600 rpm at 110 klm/hr. There is little road noise, some wind noise, but it does get a little bumpy on the goat tracks we laughingly refer to as roads on the Central Coast. Fuel consumption is great, I get between 7.4 and 7.8 L/100 klm in the last 6000 klm, but expect slightly less frugal mileage once I start using the air conditioner every day.

Complaints; One or two I have an annoying rattle in the left hand side pillar or dash that I cannot find. The rear camera seems to be set up a little out of position because if I use it to align myself I'm out of square. The steering wheel would be better if it had reach as well as height adjustment. We shall see how it goes off road over the next few months, but so far....great

I have the 2014 Mux, in 2023 still going strong – Great car. Always been serviced and even though I have only owned for 11 months it does not miss a beat. The only issue I have with the Mux is the paintwork. It needs to have good protection on it e.g. Ceramic or paint protection products. Fantastic towing ability. Show details

Lots of small issues. Car feels unfinished – Bought this car in 2017 to use for commuting to work and the occasional towing. Within the first few weeks I noticed things going wrong. Started with using oil, had an oil consumption test but it only used about 300ml per thousand kms. Turns out that Isuzu is ok with that so they won't cover it under warranty and its my problem to deal with. I… Read more

bought a new car so I wouldn't have to top up the oil regularly. Lately I found out that when I tow about 2 ton the oil consumption goes through the roof, it used about a 1L for a 40km trip. Isuzu have offered to do another oil consumption test, but unless I'm towing during that time, it won't be any different and they won't fix it.

Other issues are related to the bluetooth being really had to connect to. Often the phone connection button is just greyed out so you can't click on it. Hands free is unusable as it sounds like you have a gas mask on and no one can understand you. Can't change the time on the clock as the button is also greyed out.

If anyone opens a back window even at slow speeds around town all the windows have to be opened to deal with the wind noise. Keys are so sensitive that if you lock your car you have to carry them till you are out of range otherwise it will unlock your car just by putting them in your pocket.

Bought a manual as I prefer them. Pretty sure the synchro is rubbish as it often grinds between 2nd and 3rd gear and you have to be stationary to go from 2nd to 1st gear. Which is annoying if the lights change colour as you are slowing down for them.

Love my MUX – I purchased my MUX 2wd in August 2016, and it is a 2016.5 2wd LST,with the 5 speed auto transmission. It was primarily for towing our 18ft van which weighs roughly 1750kg loaded. We have travelled 63ks since then, and the only fault I have found is the fuel tank is a little small for the long distance traveller. We had a 116l tank fitted so it is… Read more

no longer a problem. Fuel economy varies from low 8's on a trip to mid 9's per 100k in the city. Towing the van we got between 12 and 14.5 travelling between Brisbane and Darwin. I am no leadfoot and always slowly accelerate but I am impressed with the economy. It doesn't use oil or blow smoke and I really like the car and would recommend it as a tow vehicle. It does not have all the bells and whistles of other cars of that type but it is a solid car which does all that I want. One thing I really like is the radio. I listen to am and it has the best reception of any car I have owned, particularly out west.

Supremely reliable and trouble free currently at 190000km – This vehicle was purchased primarily as a long distance/ tow vehicle in late December 2013. It has just clocked up 190000 trouble free kilometers, still on original suspension and brake pads, and its third set of tyres are relatively new. Apart from a bust turbo when relatively new AFTER a service, replaced under warranty, there have been no… Read more

breakdowns or any repair work required - servicing only. The vehicle has travelled all over Queensland NSW and Victoria towing horse floats on often very bumpy roads eg Taroom to Moree. It has survived the heat of N Qld and the snow and ice of the Central West NSW. The ride is a bit bumpy when unladen, and the GPS is not the best but as a reliable tow vehicle it cannot be beaten. I think it is important to realise it is not a mummy van. It is a tough ute like vehicle. Ideal farm or acreage utiliy vehicle, tow vehicle and occasional seven seater wagon.

Great practical car – We bought an MUX 2 years ago. Very good car for the price. We use it to tow a 2.7t caravan and it does it with ease. 2 things that I would change if I could would be for the keyless entry to work on all doors, not just the driver door and the boot. Also it would be great if the headlights were auto, as currently the driving lights are auto. Show details

Bad back up of product – Innate the LST 2014 Isuzu mux I have had my GPS upgrade 1 year after I bought it in 2014 I was told by the salesman that I would get upgrades for the GPS but when I went on to download the map it was the same one I had on mine I even went back and got it from sevice centre but still the same so if I had known at the time I would of bought the model down from the LST  Show details

Great car at a reasonable price – After much research on medium sized SUVs capable of towing a medium sized Caravan we settled on the Isuzu Mu-x. We were set on the Toyota Prado but found that we couldn't justify the extra $20k when the Mu-x had everything we wanted. We've only had it for 2 weeks and are yet to tow anything but we are happy with the car. Yes it sounds like a ute… Read more

to drive but we don't mind this as it's only noticable driving around town and we do most our driving on a highway.

Our must haves were 3lt turbo diesel engine, 3t towing capacity and seats that folded down flat so you can sleep comfortably in the rear of the car. We got them all and more.

Navigation upgrade costs – The car is very good my complaint is with the cost of the navigation up grade. Tried doing it today but stopped when I found out the costs were $200. Will just have to put up with errors that are in it. Example is on the south eastern freeway into Adelaide the speed is 90K this is on the screen but just before the two fixed cameras the voice tells you its 100K. This type of error is all the way through.  Show details

Great family car – We love our car, it is very roomy for the whole family and quite fuel efficient given the size of the car. We purchased this car to tow a caravan and whilst we are yet to use it for towing, we are confident that it will do the job and we will easily be able to pack everything we need into the car for a family trip away. We are a family for 4 with two young children, the car has two car seats in the middle row.  Show details

2018 MU-X LST - Extensive research led me to this purchase. Very happy!! – Before purchasing a new 4WD I checked out and drove the Toyota Prado, Toyota Fortuner, Holden Trailblazer, Mitsubushi Pajero Sport and the Isuzu MU-X. In the end the Isuzu offered the best value for money and promised greatest durability. Toyota currently has too many issues with their 2.8 Diesel, the Trailblazer's are chewing through oil and the… Read more

Pajero Sport was too narrow for knees because of the wide transmission tunnel.

The MU-X tows our all-terrain camper trailer with plenty of grunt and stability. It's very capable off-road and my wife and I love the I-Venture program geared towards teaching 4WD newbies the capabilities of their D-Max and MU-X vehicles. The top of the range LS-T gave us all the features we wanted, except for heated seats. However our dealer - Luke at Pakenham Isuzu - was very helpful in arranging seat warmers to be expertly installed as well as a bullbar, winch, 2 inch lift, after-market alloys with LT All Terrain tyres, snorkel, towbar, long-range fuel tank and brake controller. The range of after-market accessories for the MU-X is very impressive.

We're very happy with our MU-X and look forward to many more off-road adventures towing our camper trailer.

Did not last 150000 unsatisfactory vehicle – I brought brand new isuzu mux with rusty rotor disc and the only answer i got is that is how it is with the cars kept outside the showroom. Its good on diesel with factory faults the brand new mux i had was sold to me with mis aligned wheels that gave me lots of worries and disappointments Finally after the 125000 km engine warranty it ended up. Leaking coolant from between cylinder head and engine block.  Show details
