across Japanache. Sleeping on a futon seemed to be something that you either adjusted to and loved, or completely hated (according to opinions of people online), so I felt like I might regret my decision but wanted to give it a go first. I loved the idea of being able to regularly hang and sun my bedding for improved sleep hygiene. I found the staff at Japanache to be very helpful and able to answer any questions I had. They were transparent and knowledgeable. In January I decided to purchase a semi-double futon and semi-double tatami (2 mats) with a wooden frame for the base. This came with 2 futon pegs and a futon cover. They delivered to my home, the tatami came first and the futon a little later. The tatami smelled quite strongly when they arrived but I actually loved the smell, it still lingers just a little now, and it is a warm and comforting smell that I hope won't disappear completely. The staff sent a full care guide for both the tatami and the futon which is thorough and so helpful! I need a foam topper under my futon as it is too firm without this for me to sleep well (I wasn't able to fully adjust to sleeping on just the futon on the tatami, I also need the topper), and they were able to provide care advice in this situation as well. The first month was a bit rocky, I won't lie! It is extremely firm if you're used to soft, springy mattresses, and of course, you will have a few nights of rough sleep during the adjustment period, however I was prepared for and expected this after reading about other people's experiences. Now that I am used to it, it is the most comfortable and supportive sleeping arrangement I've ever had. I feel secure and cradled while fully supported at the same time. I had to change my pillow to a much flatter one, which I think is improving my spine over time. My sleep is deep and unbroken and I wake up feeling refreshed almost every morning. My favourite thing is being able to hang it in the sun for a day every fortnight. I feel that it is so much cleaner and more hygienic than any other mattress I've ever used, and it fluffs right back up to new every time I hang it outside. I wanted to wait 6 months before writing this review to be as accurate and objective as possible, and I can confidently say this was an excellent purchase; I can highly recommend Japanache, their products, and their service. The only negative thing with the semi-double tatami under the futon is the place they join in the middle, it is raised, whereas the straw part of the mats sinks down a little bit, so I could feel the raised join where the tatami connect right against my back and it would dig in against my spine quite roughly, so it was uncomfortable. I tried using the foam topper under the futon and found that this arrangement completely negates that feeling and I can sleep now without noticing it at all and nothing pushes against my spine. This arrangement has also improved the general ease of keeping my bedroom clean as well, as every fortnight I hang the futon outside, vacuum the tatami and air them against a wall, which completely clears my floor to clean the whole bedroom quickly and easily. Before, when I had a permanent bed set up, it was such a pain to drag it all around the room to give the floor and corners a proper clean and mop! Overall I am completely satisfied and happy with my purchase, the quality of the products, and my dealings with Japanache, and can recommend this to anyone curious about giving this sleeping arrangement a try.
Sleeping like a baby – I'm very happy with my futon mattresses and tatami. I bought two mattresses, to give a bit more padding. It took me about five days to adjust to the difference from my previous bed but I am now sleeping better than I have for a couple of years. and ordered this package over email on the Monday and received it couriered Thursday morning. Richard was very prompt and helpful. All items are excellent quality but quite heavy, definitely a two person setup initially! I aired out both the shikibuton and the tatami for a full day in the sun before use.
Assembling the frame was a breeze and from there everything slotted together perfectly. The tatami is firm with enough springiness for sleeping.
My initial nights sleep did take some adjustments and fine tuning but I woke up refreshed. The shikibuton retains heat very well and I wasn’t cold overnight. The extra pillowcases I ordered are beautiful quality, handmade by Naomi.
Overall I highly recommend you take the plunge to floor sleeping on a Japanache shikibuton and tatami. It is a significant investment but worth it.

Follow-up · Regarding firmness.. I was aware of this quality in futons before buying. It’s firm but it yields to the shape of your sleeping posture beautifully. mattress movement which makes for a better night of undisturbed sleep. The quilt is very warm, I sleep on top with just a sheet over me and this is great for summer, I imagine myself being super cosy in winter!
As for the whole changing from cushy mattress with plush topper to the tatami and futon - it maybe took a week to 10 days to find new sleeping positions where I am now almost 100% comfy - I get hip pain sometimes if side sleeping but I can blame that on my weight. As a temporary measure, I currently have my old mattress topper folded in half under my futon for extra cushioning.

I purchased two single futons, which put together make a king size bed, and I'm so glad I went this route as there is no way I could lift and handle a king size version on my own. It took a little bit of experimentation but I finally found the right solution working with the futons to get an amazing nights sleep. I have overlaid my king mattress topper over the futons and am now getting the best nights sleep ever, despite still suffering some lingering effects of RRV. I tried to go back to my regular mattress the other night but didn't last 10 minutes. I am loving sleeping on the floor now too much to go back. The quality and comfort of the futons is amazing, but they are made in Japan and are the real deal afterall. Thank you for saving my body!

and pegs included. If you’re checking out these reviews, you know this is not your normal mattress but it’s used on tatami mats or floor and thus gives a very firm surface. I prefer sleeping off the floor and being able to clean under my bed so our mattress is on the slats of the bed with a woollen duvet underneath it. Although I didn’t have real issues, I noticed my neck, shoulders and back feel better rested now that I’ve changed from a firm mattress to the shikibuton. I sleep on my side and back. My husband prefers a more cushier bed so we’ll trial a thin, 5cm mattress topper but I’m happy with just the duvet. For anyone considering purchasing a shikibuton, I definitely recommend Japanache.

I have been using my Japanache Futon for two months now and I am very happy with it. I recently bought a van for full time travel and wanted something comfortable but fairly light so that I could fold it up and take it outside to air periodically as condensation and mould can be a problem in vans. I use it in combination with a 50mm latex topper (which sits underneath the futon) and a 10mm "Aeromesh" layer for breathability.

The futon is comfortable to sleep on and it is a pleasure to be able to fold it up in the morning and put it in the wardrobe in order to have space in the bedroom to move around.

Some people might need to add an extra layer underneath. Nevertheless I'm sleeping very well and waking up without so many aches and pains. It's also lovely just to own such a lovely bit of kit.

used to be a bit of an effort for me to get up in the middle of the night, half asleep, to go to the bathroom as I am not that young anymore.... but it is great exercise for my legs, balance etc and I am ok now, it keeps me young. yoga futon lol! I cannot say now if it is durable, I believe it is and hope it will last at least, last a decade or so. I have slept on various futons in japan, some thicker and stuffier, but I love my one and would not go back to western style beds.
