16.49-3 - Awesome Family Caravan – Absolutely love our Jayco 16.49-3 Expanda Poptop outback caravan (16ft) - 2016 model. This was the shortest (6.4m) and lightest family van available, with 4 x beds and shower and toilet. Setup is very easy, and having the hard lids keeps most of the rain off the canvas. Its single axle, so less weight, less maintenance (half the tyres/bearings etc… Read more · 1
to maintain).
The van is only 1870kg and tows beautifully behind our Isuzu Mux. I always get 11-12 l/100km fully loaded with caravan (4 people, 3 bikes, caravan full up) Note: the MUX achieves 7.3l/100km unladen. The toilet and shower are great (combo) especially with our young family (no more trips to the toilet block). Having an onboard toilet allows pit stops while you're travelling without using filthy road side facilities. Being small, its so easy to Manoeuvrer into caravan parks (I'd dred to have anything larger to be honest). Many councils are banning caravans being parked on roads if the length is >7 meters, being 6.4m long the van can be parked on the road without needing storage (costs!)
The 2016 model has all the upgrades including, the door has been moved to the front to increase the kitchen bench size, it comes with an oversized fridge (150l?), independent suspension (excellent for rough roads), full pantry and roof mounted air conditioning (the older models had the ac in the side wall).
I bought the van "used" and the only issue has been a roof leak (where the end panel joins the roof angle). I just used a razor to remove the old silicon, went to bunnings and bought Sika 221 and applied a good bead, problem solved, these vans are really easy to repair, and there are plenty of youtube videos to help with maintenance questions.
The van tows well, no swaying and I've had this >110km/h (accidently down a decent hill).
The towball mass when loaded is 165kg, which means i don't need any suspension upgrades.
The kitchen is very generous, and even has a full size pantry which works well.
Very happy with the van, and owned it for 2 years now.
Hope this review helps the next person looking to buy and Expanda!
Workmanship - not quality!!!! – Just slow down 5% Jayco. Listen to the customer - it’s a thing! It’s not the materials or the product. It’s all just care factor. Silly annoying assembly errors that really take from the product. if I wanted third world assembly quality I would have bought it! Everything about the van says Australian Engineering. Except the finish. Too much… Read more
unnecessary NQR. And annoyingly a long list of silly things just not quite enough to be worth a trip back to the dealer. Just a shame really. 5% slower it could be so fantastic.
The Good The Bad The Ugly - 3.5 Stars – The Good - Nice and light with a single axle. We decided the toilet was not important as we mainly do paid caravan parks. Awesome layout. 2 x adults and 1 x child. External shower is somewhat useful. Better fridge size then Jayco camper ranges (Swan etc). Better quality beds. lots of cupboard space. Quite an effective Air cond/Heater. Easy to tow… Read more
being a pop top. Fantastic Re-sale value if kept in good condition. And it is all weather proof.
The Bad - Pull out Awning had to be refitted to the van as it was bolted incorrectly. Found this out when the awning had actually come away from the van and was dangling there in the caravan park. Quick manufacture assembly of the van means that the double/triple canvas stitching on the bed ends actually dont quite lap over the folded ends so some of the canvas is only single stitching. External Shower leaks will get that repaired under warranty.
The Ugly - CUPBOARD DOOR HANDLES CONTINUE TO BREAK. Extremely poor 2016 cupboard handle design. 5 of these have broken so far and it wont stop and there has been no communication from Jayco about replacing with another design. They will just replace the handle with the same one until your warranty expires. Then you will have to pay for them. VERY POOR.
Conclusion - Are we glad we bought it? Yes we are, this is our 3rd van. They have all been Jaycos and this was our first brand new one. Slight sour taste with the Cupboard Door handle scenario but overall we understand they are built to a price point. Unfortunately you have to pay more $$$ if you want more Quality.
2011 Expanda bubbling on Bed Lids! – Worst! Excessive bubbling on bed lids. It is a manufacturing defect however Jayco will not repair it. Van door hinges have snapped. Kitchen draw collapsed and slide hinges snapped. Overhead cupboard hinges have ripped out of the wood. Do not recommend to anyone. Jayco customer service is appalling.
Get what you pay for – Hard to beat the value for money you feel when buying a jayco compared to others. But you soon realise how they achieve that price point and that is through mass production, cheap materials and workmanship. My biggest frustration is the false advertising. Brought an outback because that is what we planned to do. First trip and the outback ended up… Read more
inside the van. How hard would it be for them to take five seconds while making these vans to seal them. I expect some dust but not the amount I had in the storage areas. Thank god it was not cloths or food in these areas. I can seal it but really should not have to when buying something called an outback ? You get some better suspension, fake checker plate and some chunky tires but joy is taken out of the outback when you spend more time cleaning it out of van than you did in it. Please also tell me why they put the spare tire between the a-frame ? Everyone I see has had to spend money relocating it which is what I also will have to do. I can live with it and in all happy but just disappointed that I have to do the finer details to make it truely outback.
Nothing but junk – My wife and my self bought a Jayco 16ft Expanda Outback a year ago and have only used it five times . The first trip we did ( a week end away ) we discoverd that the mattresses where not level amongst other things . When I contacted Jayco Gold coast about the mattress's I was told that that is how they are . What a load of crock . We have had many… Read more
issues with this product and the company we bought it from ( Jayco Gold Coast who by the way are shocking to deal with and I highly recommend you buy elsewhere ) such as all the plastic components in side and out going yellow , van leaking staining both mattresses , wiring problems , bathroom leaks , draws that don't work and not to mention the out side of the van it's self going yellow and that after a year we still do not have the right mattresses . I am very disappointed with this product and the after sales service .
Jayco Breako – We purchased a 16ft Expanda pop top Outback brand new in October 2015. Where do I start The entire van filled with dust when we took it off road. Ee later discovered thst Jayco had left off a Velcro strip that prevents dust from entrring through the hinge at the back. Consequently our rear mattress and interior canvass is permanenlty stained. … Read more
Several drawers unlocked thrmselves over a moderately bumpy road and snapped, hinges of cupboards pulled out of the wood and the privacy screen press studs just about fsll out when you look at them.
But wait until I tell you about Jayco after sales support. Its easy IT DOESN'T EXIST.
There are too many instances to relate in this forum. Needless to say Jayco were not interested when I contacted them to tell them that one wheel was just about melting off its rim it was so hot.
But the best was when my daughter and I got an electric shock off the van awning. Tried contacting Jayco and on this occassion couldnt even get them to call me back despite me leaving several messages outlining the issue. I later discovered via a sparky who was staying next to us that measured 100V through the van awning. Jayco care factor - zero.
Do yourself a favor, do not buy a Jayco. Their product is brittle and their service is the worst I have come across.
Jayco Expanda – We bought a Jayco outback expanda 2011 16-49-1 brand new our van has travelled around the country across rough roads and in bad weather never had wet beds but do have the extra privacy screens which helps keep water off also other options like solar and ext shower etc which weren't standard then have made this a very good van for the family… Read more · 1
good for towing and quick set up excellent service from Prestige Geelong the table has a section which folds up and down should have more fins to support it not a good idea to lean to heavily
Great value and family friendly – We have recently sold a Jayco Expanda Outback 16' hard lid pop-top. The van was taken into remote locations over rough roads and performed very well. We drove to the conditions and only experienced a couple of minor issues such as one broken cupboard latch. Never had any leaks. We took care to ensure our bedding did not touch the canvas ends… Read more
above the waterproof section. The van provides extra room due to the expanding bed ends and was ideal for our needs. We liked it so much we have upgraded to a new model Roomy, easy to tow, survived rough roads and creek crossings Cupboard latches can stick Restricted load carrying capacity
Terrible – We are not sure where to start but here we go.thirteen months ago we purchased a new Jayco Expanda 16.49-2 outback model.we had problems after problems after problems.firstly the welding from the shockie to the chassis was not done, the gas strut popped off everytime you popped the roof, there were screws coming through the veneer panels, nail coming… Read more
through the floor, brake wiring burnt out and brakes locked on,buttons popping off cushions left rigt and center, outside panel work coming off, step sunk, airconditioner never worked and the list just goes on.we took it back to Jayco caravanland in canninington wa and they bought it back off us,we lost $5 500 because of there mistakes and we had to wait three months for a replacement van,the same model, and pay $7 500 extra, more money lost because of their crappy van.we only used it over the weekend the replacement, when we noticed the gas line to the fridge had been drilled through, yes its brand new with a gas leak.we took it back to Jayco junko in Cannington and left it there to be repaired.once again we are without a van.we have just got back from our 4 week holiday and the problem list just goes on.we were told this van had the royal treatment but we do not think so.the van has a screw drilled through the overhead cupboard to the outside of the van, when it rains the overhead cupboard fills up with water, the poptop does not seal at the front and back of the roof so all the dust and rain ends up in van, cupboard door fell off because drill holes to big for the screws, floor is falling apart, creaking and squeaking too, front bed end leaks rain, buttons popping off, sink has not been sealed on the outside, the water goes through to the cupboard and the list goes on.Jayco junko will not buy this van back off us,nor refund our money or replace it,they are happy they have our money.we got in contact with the eastern states and they are rude and do not care about their customers either, they even hang the phone up on you when you are talking to them the ignoramus's.the worst part of all is they are accusing us of doing all these things to our caravan.how the hell you work that out we do not know, thats the mentality of Jayco junko breako.we are not sure what royal treatment means in their eyes.stay away from Jayco junko altogether,do not get involved. Easy to tow and the right space for four. No quality control made to look good thats about all.Problems after problems which is all in our overall opinion.
Jayco Expanda Outback 16.49-3 – Warburtons at Bunderberg were great to deal with.. This is the first caravan we have purchased and everything went really smoothly.. Hard lid ends, easy setup, heaps of room inside van and layout is great A few warranty issues all fixed up at first service, van is only being used as a weekender, so time will tell, will update any issues..
Excellent – Overall you can't go wrong with a Jayco Expanda and like all other vans it has its own pros and cons. It is an excellent value for your money, easy to tow, flexible and user friendly. An excellent van for first time buyers and young couples. The configuration also allows two couples to occupy the van whilst still providing privacy which is hard to… Read more
come by with other types of vans. Try it, you won't regret it. Very flexible van that can easily sleep up to 6 depending on configuration. It is good value for money, compact and is really a 23 feet that is packed into a 16 feet van. The Expanda 16.49-3 outback version is extremely easy to tow, comes with ensuite (shower/casset toilet), 2 gas bottles, three way fridge, gas and electric hot water system, 3 gas and 1 electric burner stove, 2 x 90 litre fresh water tank, microwave, battery charger 240v to 12v system (ready for your to put in your preferred battery). Optional air con, and variety of configuration. Not only an excellent family van but fantastic for couples that require extra room or have the occassional guest. Whilst the two tent like bed ends are water proof, it can gather a slight moisture on the inside in heavy rain. This can be solved by adding the bed end flies. It can also be pretty cold in deepest winter. However this is fantastic in summer especially if you have been in other types of vans in a hot summer day.
