I use this for rice and for steaming dim sims. You can probably get about 6-8 dims sims in there. If steaming, best to boil the kettle first and it will steam up much quicker. As for rice, the most I've done is 2 cups and it comes out perfect every time. I think I'll get one for work so we can have dimmies for lunch. Show details ·  1

But this little beauty does the most fantastic rice, perfect every time, not only rice but you can make soup in it and steam veggies and dumplings etc. a great find. Show details ·  2

Poor design rice absorbs toxic chemicals – Rice cooker. Poor choice of materials for compact design. Stainless steel outer shell would negate the outgasing and burning of the powder coated outer shell surface. I used it as directed. It started to outgas so I returned it. Because it was a present and had no proof of payment they only offered me a credit. I told them that I never shop at K… Read more

Mart and wanted a refund. It was against company policy to refund without proof of payment. So I took another rice cooker used it the same problem accured. Returned it to a different store only to be told that only a store credit would be issued. So I said that's OK I pass here everyday and I shall return the exchanged cooker everyday so you will have a huge stock of faulty stock and none to sell. The lady working for K Mart got the idea and gave me a refund. Although she did the right thing for the customer (me) she was not interested in reporting the product as a fire hazard so K Mart could do a recall before anyone was injured. PS. I my phone key pad has changed and is missing the commer button that is why there are no commers in the above statement.

Excellent but read the directions numb skulls – Great value and does a superb job of cooking regular rice. Reading some of the negative reviews leaves me wondering how we have survived this long as a species...lol :) To all those whinning about under cooked rice, all I can say is you should read the simple instructions that pack with the unit. Admittedly, you do need to use a little common… Read more ·  1

sence when translating the chinglish, but it does say pretty clearly that the cooker automatically switches from 'COOK' to 'WARM' at the end of the cooking cycle, and that you should then wait app 15 minutes longer with the cooker on the warm settting for the rice to become fluffy. It also explains that rice can vary in its moisture content one supplier/season to the next and therefore you may need to slightly alter the amount of water you add to compensate. But that would be the same for ALL rice cookers. One person on here even complained their rice was under cooked every time AND, that the holes in the steamer basket are too large and the rice keeps falling through to the bottom pot.......Errrm, dude ur not meant to put the rice in the basket. The steamer basket is for steaming ur carrots and pork buns and stuff. The rice goes in the bottom, with the water....please get yourself removed from the electoral role immediately. Bottom line, it's a $14 rice cooker folks, if you need one to hold your hand and play a lil pokemon tune when ur 20c cup of rice is done, go buy a $1400 Japanese rice cooker. But if you follow the simple directions on ur cheap n cheerful anko, ur rice will be just as good....just keep ur receipt, cause some do report a burnt out unit here and there, but not me touch wood. But If you happen to get unlucky within 12 month, just go grab another one for free, cause at $14 retail, they must be manufacturing them at 20 units a minute so ur bound to get a bad egg every couple of thousand.

UPDATE: Had it about a year I suppose and still cooking excellent rice everytime. Sometimes a little rice sticke to the bottom, but no big deal, it comes off easy enough when it sits and cools. Also, I see some users complaining about "gluggy or under cooked rice". I go back to my original title suggesting to 'read the simple directions'...and, very important

1: USE THE SMALL MEASURING CUP THAT CAME WITH THE COOKER TO MEASURE THE RICE, IT IS MUCH SMALLER THAN A REGULAR CUP.

2: WASH AND DRAIN THE MEASURED RICE THEN ADD TO RICE COOKER.

3: ONCE WASHED RICE IS IN THE COOKING VESSEL, ON A LEVEL SURFACE, ADD THE REQUIRED WATER ONLY USING THE FILL SCALE EMBOSSED ON THE INSIDE OF THE COOKING VESSEL AND SWITCH THE COOKER TO "COOK".

4: REGARDLESS OF THE AMOUNT OF RICE, THE UNIT WILL SWITCH TO "WARM" AUTOMATICALLY WHEN COOKED. WHEN IT DOES SWITCH TO WARM, STIR THE HOT RICE OVER IN THE COOKER TO FLUFF, AND REPLACE THE LID LEAVING THE COOKER ON, IN THE 'WARM' POSITION FOR A FURTHER 5 to 10 MINUTES BEFORE SERVING.....

Works every time. You can add a tablespoon of butter for a looser grain, and a pinch of salt. If cooking basmati rice, I change things just a little to get 'excellent' results. Instead of using the measuring method suggested above, I use a regular cup (size is your choice but same cup to measure both rice and water) The process, measure, rinse, THEN SOAK 'aged, good quality basmati rice' in cold water for a good 30mins before draining and adding to the cooker. Using the same cup you measured the dry rice in, add 1.5 x the same volume of water to the cooker. Put the lid on and set to 'cook', same as above, when it clicks to 'warm' fluff rice, replace lid, leave the cooker on 'warm' AND WAIT 10 or 15 minutes before serving. Basmati really does benifit with the addition of a tablespoon of butter into the cooker before switching on. Enjoy ;-)

2 years on still cooking perfectly – We bought the older model of this Kmart rice cooker in 2019 for $13.00. Our family eats rice every single day because we love rice. It sometimes gets used twice a day and is being used as I write this review. We also use the steamer basket if we just want to steam fish, vege's or anything else. I would not hesitate in buying another one. Pro tip;… Read more

Do not put your rice in the steam basket UNLESS you are steaming glutinous rice, and then you should use muslin cloth to stop the rice grains from falling through the holes in the steam basket. Place your rice in the bowel and rinse the rice in clean water. Then cover the rice with water up to the first knuckle on your index finger or about 2.5cm if you have small fingers. Put on the lid and press start. That's it. Perfectly steamed rice in about 20 minutes. The only reason why I give it 4 starts is because over the years of constant use and daily washing, the non stick coating has started to chip off as you can see in the photo.

Value for money – I have used this rice cooker for many years and if you have the correct ratio of water to rice (2:1) it cooks perfectly. Quick & easy. Definitely not gluggy. For under $ 20 what a bargain. Not sure why it’s not getting more five star reviews as I’ve had no issues with the product. Little beauty Show details ·  1

Cooked perfect rice for 6 years – It is so cheap at $17 and ours lasted 6 years. Just off to Kmart now to buy another. Was going to replace the fuse but that's $6 on ebay so quicker / easier to just get a new one. Sorry about the landfill. Show details ·  1

Died after 2 uses – I first bought this rice cooker last year, and it worked well for about 5 months with regular twice weekly use and then it died mid use. happens sometimes. So I bought another since the unit only costs $14 and is perfect for our needs. The second one lasted 2 uses. On the second use, it turned itself off about 3 minutes in and just would not turn back on. On inspection, there was nothing obviously wrong.

At this point, we gave up on kmart appliances and went with a better quality brand.

Stopped working – Brought this rice cooker as everyone was raving about it and all the reviews on Kmarts website are 5 star (which I’ve now noticed is the norm for everything on their webpage) I used it 6 times before it just died. No reason for its immature death, just nothing, wouldn’t turn on all of a sudden! Didn’t bother taking it back just went and got a Tefal one instead. Show details

Fire hazard – Lasted less than a month, used 4 times before it smelt like it was about to catch fire. Rice cooker fail – Purchased 4 months ago. Burning smell from first use Used 3 times then rice cooker smoked and failed Threw in bin and purchased different brand. Do not buy this appliance – The price of this unit should’ve set alarm bells off, it was $14. The first couple of times it worked well so I thought perhaps I dodged a lemon. Alas, that was not the case. The last time I used this appliance it went to “keep warm” despite very little absorption of the water. It had a dreadful smell of burning like something was melting. So far so good …. mostly – Really convenient and easy to use as well as being miles cheaper than other rice cookers on the market at $14. I have had mine for a month now and the only problem I get is a thin layer of rice at the bottom that is a bit more cooked than the rest (the rest is perfectly fluffy). It is still edible but I am going to try a bit more water and see… Read more ·  2

how I go. I have used it for both white and brown rice that I wash in a strainer before cooking (as per the instruction book that says not to wash your rice in the cooking bowl). It comes with a removable steamer basket that I haven’t used yet but would be good for dumplings or veggies. It also comes with a measuring cup, serving spoon and basic instructions. I’m happy with it given the price and the fact it fits in my drawer. I also like that there’s just one button to use and that, once cooked, the appliance will switch to “keep warm”.
