very enjoyable, albeit a few hiccups

purchased as a demo mid 2000 with 2000km. TD% 7seat with ACE and rear a/c, locking centre diff. haven't wanted to change it as yet because it is so nice to drive, could not see any advantage in getting a d3 or d4. currently 190K km.
few problems: head gasket(difficult to diagnose), oil pump fell off and blew up turbo, fuel pump suddenly ceased to work. regular services that are not too expensive. sad to see it go Show details

It you love it, it loves you back

We bought this car for off-reading adventures. Very good and comfortable for this. Great at pulling a trailer too. Slower on the quick uptake because it’s so heavy. Not good if you’re looking for a zippy 4wd but awesome for big trips. Pretty average on fuel depending. We have the diesel automatic.

Last real tough luxury off-road landy

This vehicle is more on the lines of the original Range Rover.

You can drive this to hell and back and it stands by you like a good old friend.

Performance and handling is excellent.

Seat comfort is the best and than other makes probably due to BMW influence.

Reliability is average as things do wear but you can easily maintain this vehicle because there is an abundance of information and cheap parts you can order from UK. The markup on parts from dealers in Australia is daylight robbery.

Best 4wd ive owned

Purchased my 99 disco auto a few years ago. Couldnt be happier with it. Tows my boat with ease. 200k on the clock. Had 3 amigo lights when i purchased the vehicle, replaced the abs shuttle valve for under $100 and all good. Fuel economy is amazing for a 4wd that weighs over 2 tonne, i get 9.5 litres. Have owned a 96 Prado previously, and an 01 navara. They dont compare to the disco. Looking at getting an ecu remap soon for some more get up and go.

The 3 Amigos

It is so disappointing that Land Rover did not recall this model over the ABS brakes system . The Wabco (Germany) ABS has exhibited a fault by illuminating three lights on the dash with regular monotony. It appears that owners all over the world are annoyed by this ABS failure., My vehicle has 108,000 klms now and I have endured this for about 38,000 klm to now. In desperation I removed the ABS modulator last week and posted it to an ABS repairer in Shawnee (USA) for a positive repair. I regard the failure of Land Rover to recall and repair the ABS as negligent.

A great journey

Our TD5 purchased in 2004 as a 5,000 demo has been a fantasitc vehical which we intend hanging onto for some time yet. Though we have had a few small repairs such as a new fuel pump, alternator and a few other general wear and tear issues, at almost 170,000 km we are very pleased. The fuel economy for a large vehical is excellent, especially on a trip. We've been on lots of trips and camps through some really difficult terain. Unless someone wants to offer us a new Discovery 4 as a change over we are keeping our 'Rover' for sometime yet. It fits very nicely on our little hobby farm.

Hi guys, looking at purchasing a 2002 4l V8 series 2 discovery. It's been very well looked after with a few added accessories which is perfect for camping and 4x4ing but the whole head gasket issue on these engines is really bothering me. How concerned should I be, it's got 180000kms auto.
