LG Google Nexus 5X

Unlikely to last much beyond 12 months – Like many others, the Nexus 5X that I bought about 14 months ago has recently failed with the bootloop problem, which occurs due to a manufacturing fault in the phone's processor. It seems that this happens due to exposure to the heat generated by the phone over a period of time - typically 12-18 months. I bought the phone in Dec 2016, via… Read more
eBay, from a person who had received it as an unwanted gift from his company. It was brand new in it's original packaging. However, when pursuing a warranty claim from LG, they stood by the "non-transferable" clause in the phone's warranty booklet which states that warranty is only provided to the original purchaser.
It seems to me that LG are fine with eschewing their corporate responsibility to provide a product that actually works for a reasonable period of time, i.e. 2 years as per Australian consumer law. They do not feel it is necessary to rectify what was clearly an inherent fault in the phone and will take any opportunity to void the 2 year warranty.
"Life's Good?"...I think not. I won't be buying any of their products again after the manner in which they have dealt with me.
Great phone at this price point – My daughter and I are both using this phone at present: and whilst her 32GB late release model is still raging along at full speed, my 16GB earlier model has had lagging and no in call sound unless using speaker. Not great when you are with company, or out in public. (PS: Zero of the recommended fixes in forums worked to restore the mic, until I… Read more
installed an app that helps you regain control of in-call sound: and keep it, by seperating the noise output for all uses on your device rather than combining them, and sitting in your notification area, I case you need to toggle them after an update changes some obscure permission again. If you are experiencing the same, try the free app Volume Notification, by Seht. I've needed to use it twice. It works!) they really handle drops on marble and wood floors protecting the screen just enough with the combo of a tiny raised bezel and the cushiony give offered by the back cover. They are a pretty phone, and getting the earliest release on updates thus far has been a bonus. I do seem to be having an issue with an administrator blocking me from backing up my phone in the Google accounts section, which is puzzling. My security doesn't pick up anything suspect, and I'm not using the email as part of a workplace...puzzling. Apparently my phones camera is pretty crap, and pails in comparison to my daughters. Don't know why, but it's very slow, and images are often sub par, good luck trying to zoom and Focus on a document...I was swaying at one point, due to so many repeat attempts. These things are minor I expect, if you're not attempting to use it for a mobile office. I demand a lot from my devices. 18hrs per day, I'm often switched on and logged into three seperate places, doing research with multi tab browsing, photo editing and paint applications open, one social account and YouTube to watch all at once. Sometimes an app like ETSY will crash, but with a dozen things all going at once, I can't fault it too much. Don't buy it if you need a glaring bright screen, or want a music player as It has crappy sound configuration.
ALL THE NEGATIVES ARE PRETTY MINOR: AND I WOULD DEFINITELY RECCOMEND THIS IN THE SECOND HAND MARKET FOR THOSE ON A BUDGET....At this price point, and with my daughters version, it's a dream come true. Avoid purchasing the 16gig early release, as its really popping up everywhere, with sound issues of late.
Great phone that stays up to date – The smaller of the two phones released this year under the Nexus banner, this better suits those who want a pocket sized device than the 6P. In terms of features, this phone is all about being 'pure' android - there are no manufacturer added skins here, and usually no phone company bloatware either. The OS comes directly from Google, and will… Read more
update within a couple of weeks of them releasing the new version, so it will stay up to date.
The fingerprint sensor on the back is easy to use, and well placed once your finger learns to avoid the camera lens which is a bit too close (but where else could it go?).
There are some downsides - battery life is average, lasting me the whole day but not much more. The USB type C connector is still a bit unusual, so getting spare charging leads or a car charger is more difficult than the normal type. On the plus side, it can be plugged in either way up - so that saves some fiddling. The phone also has no SD card slot, so best avoid the 16GB model.
Things I like:
- Fast response
- Lovely bright display which is even visible in sunlight
- Good camera
- Kept up to date with latest versions of android and monthly security patches
- Solid, non-slip feel
- Keeps all my photos backed up in the cloud
- Fingerprint sensor keeps it secure
- Fast charging by USB-C
- Audio quality is good via headphones
- The speaker faces forwards (big difference when watching youtube)

Exceptionally good after two years – In my case, LG Nexus 5x is very reliable and long lasting smartphone. Its been nearly 2 years I'm using this phone, since then I didn't have any issues. It gets charged so quickly and lasts for one day or 1.5 days. It was so quick while opening any App. However, 32GB memory is now exhausted and that might result slowing down the phone response a few seconds (2 or 3 seconds only). Show details
Great size screen, latest android from google still supported – As of Feb 2018, this phone is still getting security updates from google, which is great to have the latest software available still. A warning though, to update major versions, a wipe and reinstall is required, to keep the phone usable. The camera is a standout, allowing 4K video, however the image stabilisation is reserved for the nexus 6P,… Read more
so some shaky videos may be noticed. The slow motion video at 1080p is great looking, especially in favourable lighting, such as outdoors in the shade. Bought via eBay from an overseas seller, around $330, so affordable for me.
Excellent phone – Bought this for my partner and she loves this - she would choose it over any newer model phones. With the small price tag and positive reviews surrounding this phone, it was too hard not to jump on the Nexus range. The finger print scanner was conveniently placed, and was lightning fast. Stock android is always a big plus too. Camera was a bit slow but still took great photos. Show details

Slow and super small battery – Camera is good, Battery totally sucks phone is slow, drops calls, the only thing I do like is the memory. They compare this to an apple 6, not even close. I am not impressed at all, should have never bought it. The build is not bad but the phone is a little over priced and now I found out the are not going to make anymore of them and replacing with Pixel. Just my luck. Show details
Junk – The phone will turn on. Everything junk. I bought this phone when it first came out. It worked good for a week's. Then nothing. Anything you want to do. No! I had to buy a new phone that broke so temp. Using this one again. I hoped that there would be an update or something. Still junk. Show details
LG are scumbags – Just echoing the comments made by several LG victims on this site re. this phone. What a piece of [Word Removed] Designed to die within a few months post warranty. They know it's a flaw in the phone, but leave us in the ditch. I heard LG dropped Warner from their sponsorship deal because he didn't reflect their values of integrity and decency (post-ball tampering) HA! Hilarious... I will never buy another LG product again Show details

Has been a good phone, mostly – Bought this phone second hand in 2016. It got the boot loop problem about 6 months after I got it but LG replaced the mother board under warranty. I used it as my day to day phone until last year when I got a Pixel 4 xl. The Pixel has been replaced four times under warranty and now has broken down after warranty expired again. The Nexus 5X has… Read more · 1
been my trusty back up and I am typing this review on it now. Battery doesn't last long anymore and it has become a bit slow but it is still fully functional. Wish there was something that I knew would be as reliable as this phone has been.
Very happy buyer – Bought it 2years ago at very low price from office work, still using it,quality pics, videos and sound.brought it to paris 5months,changed sim and worked and to asia.perfect,fone,f.bookand sms many pictures taken Very light easy to use and updated to Android 8 with no problem.very strong screen unscratchable.fast charging.one minus, cannot change the battery myself, locked case Show details
Its a pretty good phone – Durability of the phone is good. I have phone from 3 years. Its camera is awesome like pixel's camera. I use phone for social networking and gaming. The main issue with it is its gets pretty hot. Application work very smooth without getting struck. Show details
Never buying an LG product again – This phone was great when it worked but it all downhill after that. I liked the google lines of phones but the representation was ruined when LG manufactured them. Two of my LG manufactured phones from the Nexus like suffered the same defect. There is a manufacturing defect on the phone's motherboard that will make the phone useless and… Read more
unrepairable withing 1-2 years. This happaned to both of the Nexus 5X phones that i bought. Warranty will also not cover the costs despite being a known problem and coincidentally this happened ON THE DAY the warranty finished.

Not a good one – I have bought it for replacing my iphone 4s in 2016 but it may be worse than iphone 4s. I do not know the reason why it is so slow and lag especially for the opening camera. It cost me almost 400 dollars and I think even a 200dollar iphone may be better. Can not find some good points. Sorry Show details
Was good when working – The Nexus 5X built contains stock android from Google. Its features and specifications are quite good for its price. It has most contemporary necessities such as NFC and finger print scanning given it was released in 2015. However, after 18months of excellent performance the phone got stuck in bootloop and wouldn't start up. From my research I discovered that the issue has affected most units of this model after a certain period of usage. Show details
My phone died after 15 months – It's dead. I can't power it up. It worked perfectly until yesterday. No bootloop issues, it just stopped working. Don't buy refurbished models of this product. Make sure you research warranty details if you are planning to purchase a Google Pixel. Zero Stars for this product... it will turn into an expensive paperweight. Show details
It dies suddenly – I know this product is no longer manufactured but I'm writing this to warn people who may be still using this phone. My Nexus 5 lasted about a year and three months. One Day it suddenly turned off while I was using and never turned on again. Until then everything was working perfectly. Most of my files and photos were backed up but few things… Read more
weren't. So if your Nexus 5x is still working, please back up everything every day, it may die suddenly without any warning.
Good phone for value – The phone had a motherboard issue but thankfully was still in warranty & it got fixed at no charge, except shipping. Hopefully, it lasts long enough till I need a new one. Great product overall. The screen size is perfect for me and I prefer basic android system and updates over Samsung. Show details
Excellent value phone, great performance – Bought the Nexus 5X when it was first released at the end of 2015. Recently I dropped and smashed it, and straight away replaced it with another 5X. Such a good phone, the latest software still runs great with no lag (unlike iPhones of the same age!). Being a Google phone, it's great getting the latest Android software first. this operating system are awesome... I can use it hands-free with a headset while riding my motorbike. So good. Will be a Google phone fan boy for years!
Complete rubbish – The phone was only 18 months old when it packed up and refused to reboot. Have contacted LG Electronics in Australia but they don't want to know. They say the phone is an overseas model even though it was purchased here in Australia. The phone was made in Korea and is no different to any other LG Nexus 5X. LG Electronics are just making pathetic… Read more
excuses for not doing anything and have no regard for customer care or consumers rights in the Australian consumer law. The ACCC have prosecuted LG Electronics for these failings in the past which clearly demonstrates the contempt they have for the law.
I will never buy an LG product again.
Great phone, but doesn't age well – Just like a samsung phone, this one was snappy and fast from day one. It's been 1.5 years so far, and the battery life has went from 3-5 hours SoT to 1-2 hours SoT. The low amount of ram is painstaking, at time I have trouble multitasking between two apps, chrome and sheets. Show details

Best Google Mobile – This is the one of the best Android Google made mobile i have purchased. What is great in this mobile: 1) As it is a Google branded Mobile phone software updates are regular unlike other Android phones which needs to be waited for the manufacturer to release at a later date. I already have a Android O beta software installed which is not yet… Read more
released. It was initially on Android 7 Nougat.
2) Reasonable price
3) Can get all the good things of Google Android apps
4) Quality of Camera & videos are excellent
5) Google Support
Great phone with some flaws – I'm a big fan of Google products and I had a Nexus 4 prior to this one. Beautiful phone. It looks nice, feels great and it's not too big. Perfect size for my hand. Performance is great even with 2GB RAM. This is one of the very few flaws it has. Probably a little bit more of RAM and ROM would be better but for what I paid it was a great phone.… Read more
Camera is good, also has NFC that is extremely useful when paying with your phone (payway & paypass compatible).
Good Phone - does what it needs to do – So far after 6 solid months of use, I haven't had any major issues with the phone. Its a good phone for the price I paid. The screen resolution is good and the camera is excellent - although sometimes it can lag processing photos. Fingerprint scanner is fairly accurate and in a convenient location on the back. Battery was OK to start with… Read more
although it is now starting to struggle to make it through the day with medium usage.
I wish it had an option for external storage as the memory fills up quickly.
Nice phone with very bad battery backup – It's very good phone. Only issue I have is battery backup. It can't even stay for 10 hours. Build quality is very good. Sound output via audio jack is ok. Picture quality is good. Performance is nice. It charges very quickly. Type-C charger will not lock. Connectivity is good. Navigation is very nice. Show details
Premium quality with an affordable price – Excellent build quality and decent spec for everyday use. Great camera and sharp screen. 16GB with no storage expansion is not enough if you use a lot of apps or wanted to store a lot of media. Device will get a little bit warm with heavier load but is reasonable. Show details
Good phone let down by its poor battery – Decent mid range phone number. With a nice vibrant screen, slim size and decent camera. Let down by its very poor battery life. If it had a stronger battery it work be the perfect phone. Watching a short youtube video quickly burns through about 5-10% of it. It also loses a moderate amount in standby. Show details
Best Phone! Super quick! – Feels really good to hold. Great screen resolution, awesome camera. Finger print scanner on the back which is good. Haven't had a problem with this phone at all. Has a USB-C charger which means that it charges really quickly combined with the 3amp wall charger. All round great phone for any user. Show details
Love the full android experience – I've had a Nexus 7 tablet since they first came out so it was an easy choice when it came to replacing my faulty iPhone. The Nexus 5x is like having a mini tablet so much so that I don't feel the need to pick up my Nexus tablet for google searches - I just use the phone instead. As a phone it is slim and has a great screen size. The added… Read more
security of the finger identifying plate on the back is great and it makes for fast access to wake your phone up. iPhone users may not enjoy the differences from the outset but it's worth perservering. The full android experience is liberating!
Really good value for money – This phone is exactly what I needed. It is pretty affordable and the camera is really high resolution. I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for affordable phone options! Had used Iphone for a long time so had to get used to a new interface but I am glad I switched. Show details
Excellent phone at great value – When the Google Pixel came out I was looking at that or the Nexus 5X. The Nexus 5X was about 1/3 to 1/2 the price, and not too much difference, so I went with this and it's an amazing phone, everything I need and that great Nexus benefits of not being full of custom-UI and bloatware and apps are well tested against it. Show details
Very Good Quality Product – I am using Nexus 5X since 6 months, but not found any issue yet. I'd like to recommend users not to buy 16GB model, as I feel 16 GB is very insufficient in regular use. Only regular use applications require more than 16 GB memory. Otherwise, a performance is quite good so far. Show details
Pretty good phone, great value at the price – Very sturdy, good front facing speaker, just an ok battery life, usb type-C, best android software experience in my opinion. If you can get this sub $250 you're golden. would recommend. Feels a bit cheap because it is a bit cheap but performance is more than enough for everyday tasks and reasonable gaming. Show details
Great phone at Discounted price – Ive had the Nexus 5 and now upgraded to the 5x. Camera on this one is much better and the fingerprint sensor is awesome. No bloat-ware and very clean Android install makes this a non-laggy unit for what was a mid-range price. Shame the Pixel has priced itself out of the market for me. Great value phone. Show details
