Makita Brushless Line Trimmer Kit DUR189RM Questions & Answers
VerifiedMPN: DUR189RMFinding it hard to get info on converting my Makita DUR189 trimmer from string to blades. Does anyone know if a conversion kit is available? Annie K
Have an 18v DUR189 Makita line trimmer, near 2 Years now and the M8 x 1.25 RH nylon line head that came with the new trimmer never ever came off by itself & recently brought a Makita 'Ezy Work' nylon line head M8 x 1.25 RH-purely to have a spare ready to go. Used the Ezy Work 5 times in 2 months and initially it spun itself off 1st time I put it on & tested it (using the hex key as always) and 4 more times since but only when I release the throttle trigger which stops the motor spinning but the new head keeps spinning itself off and across the road sometimes. very frustrating, now tightening it tighter than ever had to with the initial head, last straw yesterday, won't use it anymore. Note: Looking at the nylon line head from Underneath-To screw the nylon head on is in a 'Clockwise' direction (left to right) and to remove it-screw it off is in Anticlockwise direction-Right to Left yet the units motor when working spins Anticlockwise and when the throttle lever is let go the motor stops spinning yet the Nylon Ezi work head want to keep going in the same direction as if to unscrew the head off, wondering whether that has anything to do with it? Also in trying to further weigh up potential reasons, I noticed that the Ezy work nylon head when screwing it on, (without the flange) does near on 6 and a half 360 degree rotations to hand tighten snug only, whereas the original head thread screws on close to 8 and ¾ x 360 degree rotations to ‘snug’. In other words, seems like the original head’s thread has more ‘threads’ holding it on, not sure whether there is contributing to this frustrating delemna. Initial idea was to invest and save time but result is actually the opposite, money wasted and more time consuming. Any ideas please?
How do I tighten the head ?
it should have come with an allen key that is stored up near the motor end of the trimmer. You insert the allen key through a hole in the unit that is located just above the head. It will lock the head as you twist it loose.
It's a crude idea, my old Talon had a button you held to lock the head.

Why is my electric whipper sniper DUR189RM sluggish. The battery is 18 V. Fully charged
Purchased a couple of months ago for my wife to use. It worked fine initially, but now the trimmer head unscrews and drops off when you stop cutting. How can you tighten it? I see others have had this problem but don't see the solution.
There is a hole in the side for a Allen key. When you insert it you’ll be able to tighten the head.
On mine, the screw was missing.
How do I tighten the head?
I’ve just purchased the Makita DUR189 line trimmer and have noticed that the motor head itself seems to have a little bit of play where it is clamped around the main shaft. Ie, the clamp is not holding the motor head rigidly on the shaft. Can anyone tell me if they have noticed the same issue? The screws holding the motor to the shaft can’t be tightened any further.
Howdy Chrism,i have owned mine for a bit over 2years and still going AOK..i can confirm mine has the same movement between the shaft POLE and engine head "where the two are joined"..i also tried to tighten it when new but gave up however still going strong and id say dur189 works hard every 7-10days here at our house..my only complaint is as my original post and i tried several different trimmer head designs so far i thing original works best with twister wire..
Many thanks for your reply stig and obviously it hasn’t presented a problem for you so I look forward to using it. Looks like it might be meant to do that. Perhaps it’s some sort or anti vibration design but it would be nice if Makita let customers know if that’s the case.
Mikita DUR 189. I have problems with the cutting line retreating into the housing after only a few metres of cutting. This happens again and again. I am totally frustrated. The Trouble Shooting section in the manual does not address this problem. Can anyone please help.
sounds like poor quality line is breaking at the contact point with the reel, you can tell the sound, feel and spin speed all change. If your using the line that came with the unit, then that's the problem. A good quality line should work better.
Thanks for your answer. This could very well be the cause. I will try a different line next time.
How to record the whippersnipper
The housing has press tabs, so easy to take off and on again - spool sits loosely inside the housing, so it too pops straight out. Instructions state to prepare approx 3meters of chord, then need to self wind into the spool. It proved an easy straight forward process, although instructions weren't fully thorough and I had to guess what one particular notch was for.
sorry, can't help. I returned it to the store and received a refund as it was sold to me with inferior cutting line.
What is the part number for a replacement bump head?
bit late, however might help others original pn 198972-2 and is M8x1.25mmRH thread "special bunnings order"..any m8x1.25mm right hand thread should work even an ebay one i tried.
Thanks for the response! It certainly will help someone out there!
