Mates Rates are very upfront about the fees they get paid from different financial institutions and this goes to show how other brokers make money off of their clients. It breaks down to the initial commission payment and then an ongoing annual trailing commission of the outstanding loan amount. This adds up to $1000s of $$$.

Mates Rates take the initial commission as their payment (and fair enough - everyone should get fair pay for their time and effort), but the customer receives the ongoing annual trailing commission of something like 0.1% to 0.25%. With other brokers this normally goes into their pocket, so why wouldn't you use a good quality broker that passes it on to you?

So as a new mortgage holder, I'd definitely recommend Mates Rates Mortgage Brokers. Lisa and Ashlea were so easy to work with and everything went smoothly from incredibly quick approval (under 3 hours) to settlement.

Get the $$$ back in your pocket! I'd definitely use them again and I've recommended them to friends.

Mates Rates? Seriously, my last loan was so competitive, when I went to the local bank branch to sign the documents, the staff couldn't believe the rate I was offered and said they needed to talk to the broker at the branch to match it! Also, the cashback is real - every month since 2010, I've been getting the trailing commission from Mates Rates deposited straight into my bank account.

If you don't mind dealing with a company that works exclusively online and over the phone, you should give Mates Rates a chance!

Horrible Experience – My experience was not great. I emailed and called to follow up with Mates rates who had my application for 4 weeks before they forwarded it to the lender for approval.They even forwarded my request to discharge my loan to my current lender. shock, I did not respond to that email nor did they follow up. I did not continue with the application as this should have been picked up earlier by Mates Rates and Suncorp who were in communication with them. I only found out whilst checking my current home loan app on 9/7/19. I immediately called Mates rates and was rudely told no settlement was taking place because it wasn't approved. So why send the documents to discharge my loan, why not withdraw them!? That's 2 weeks after my last email from Mates rates. I still have no access because my lender thinks I'm discharging my loan 11/7/19. The loans process was handled poorly, unprofessionally, the experience stressful and extremely time consuming. I have 3 insurance policies with Suncorp which I will change immediately.

They are purely internet based so you have to be moderately tech savvy and be prepared for a lot of paperwork, a lot of scanning and once again a lot of paperwork. They will contact you by phone and I would have given 5 stars if I had a little more verbal communication from them, in saying that they swiftly always responded to my queries.

The only time you have to actually see a person is to have your ID validated at Australia Post which costs around $88.

In summary I feel like I have control over my finances, I feel like I've learnt plenty by having to do a lot of the work myself and mostly I feel I have the best deal.
