Should have stuck with Toyota – Car purchased brand new from a dealer in 2015. Has driven beautifully, quite spacious, roomy enough for the family. Good fuel economy. Great car until last week when out of nowhere, the Variable Valve Timer Actuator died. No power to drive above 60km/hr and definitely undriveable. Car has always been serviced by Mazda and just recently serviced a… Read more
month ago. Mazda will not rectify this new problem, even though the component should last the life of the car. This appears to be a common problem with Mazdas and with Mazda refusing to fix the issue - look on the AAC website. So $3500 out of pocket even though it's only just under 6 years old. I should have bought another Toyota. No problems with that one in 22 years.
The perfect small car – You can feel and see the materials quality, the standard features for the price are more than what I expected. Very cheap in petrol, definitely I would recommend this car. Show details
good but side mirrors have terrible BLIND SPOT – terrible blindspot on both side mirrors. maybe im just use to my ford fiesta, but with this car, i have to do a full head to body check. also had an odour coming from airconditioning. mazda applied some lemonade freshner during service, but odour came back. otherwise, gps dashboard is good, controls good. steering wheel is very light. doors shut quietly. more fuel efficient than my ford fiesta, brakes a bit more sensitive though. Has proved to be a great buy – Had the car for 2 years now and could not be happier. Great mileage 6.1 k's per 100 k's average over the 2 years. Comfortable, nippy, great electronics voice activation for phone, navigation, music etc. Cannot say enough about this little beast it is trult phenomenal. Could not be happier. Show details
Excellent small car – The Mazda 2 Maxx is an excellent small car with a premium feel. With an attractive and sleek design, it’s unique styling sets it apart from other cars in its category. Pros - Attractive styling - Good price - Stylish and functional interior - Touch screen Bluetooth and navigation - iStop feature - Good bootspace - Mazda quality… Read more
and reliability
- Easy to drive, keeps up in city and comfortable on highway
Cons
- Like other small cars, panels feel flimsy
- Paint is soft and tends to chip easily
- Not a lot of power from stop to go. You will find yourself lagging on take offs. This is most notable in comparison to a Ford Fiesta I have driven prior which is markedly ‘zippier’
- Drivers seat is not the most comfortable. Again, the Ford Fiesta trumps
- 3 year warranty only. Servicing is not cheap compared to other makes.
Great little car with all the modcons – This is my second Mazda 2 purchase. I recently upgraded from 2009 Mazda 2 Neo to Maxx. Initially, I was a little concerned with some of the reviews online that Mazda 2 were now made in Thailand instead of Japan with lots of complaints about poor quality / duds. Overall, I have had the car for 12 months and I’m loving it. Cruise control and… Read more
MZD connect are my favourite new features. They have improved to the colours too - glad they got rid of the bright green.
Problematic but still reliable – Cheap to run Bought brand new from mazda dealer Was absolutely ripped off in terms of price Fuel gage constantly taking incorrect readings Bluetooth system is a piece of rubbish... potential to cause an accident more than using the device itself Seat belt needed to be replaced as it wouldn’t retract Show details
Great car – Very happy with this car, got a sedan maxx and for that price it has a lot of amazing features making Sydney driving a lot easier. It handles really well and is strong to accelerate. The only issue I have is my brakes have worn really fast and squeak. Even though I drive a lot I don't find it acceptable. Show details
Great car – Great car , so easy to park and doesnt feel cheap to drive in. Very spacious inside , i was about to move alot of items while moving houses by putting the back sit down. Around $50 for a fuel tank Not a fan of the gps due to the images of the map. Show details
Awesome small sedan! – I bought the Mazda2 Maxx Sport Sedan for reverse camera and sensor. Since it's normally only for 2 passenger, it is good enough (the back seat's space is quite narrow for tall people). It is economical and easy to park. I loved the interior design of the sport version - black cloth with red stitch. I can also fold the back chair down for… Read more
even bigger boot space, very handy when needed.
I also added GPS, which is an amazing add on.
As my first car, it is good for its value.
Great Car – Really liked this car so i bought one off the show room floor. The sedan attracted me because of the large boot size.Good for a couple who want a holiday,as our luggage fits and our belongings aren't left exposed on rear seat. Manual transmission works for me with plenty of power so don't be afraid to use it. The automatic transmissions kickback didn't suit me. Show details
Mazda 2 - An awesome car – The best car I have driven. Really smooth and powerful. Very stable and got a comfortable feel. enjoying the luxury of a good car without paying an arm and leg for it. The look is very slick and modern. Thinking of changing my second car to a Mazda too. 100% recommend this car. Show details
Mazda2 Maxx Sedan - great budget buy – Firstly, i chose Soul red... arguably the best auto red around the moment. Still love it a year later. Initially i found the car a little under powered, however quite quickly adjusted my driving behaviours and found it gets around just fine. This car is very economical to run. I have done some long distance driving - e.g sydney to Canberra - and… Read more
have got the advertised fuel consumption. It also gets up to speed on the freeway easily and and is comfortable to sit in for long periods as both the driver and passenger. Choosing max was also a good investment in my opinion, the interior has a nice feel and i can't do without the reversing camera.
My only qualm with the interior is that the door handle area and the other rubbery surfaces get a scuffed / worn look quite easily and i feel the need to put some of that interior polish stuff on it quite frequently.
The boot space is immense and the back seat is roomy. It is snug on the trips i have done with 4 adults and 1 child but totally doable. As a family of 3 - 2 adults, 1 child it is more than enough space and the kids have plenty of leg room.

Love my car - zoom zoom – I recently went from a lancer which I had brand new to a demo Maxx 2 sedan - and I wish I had done it sooner, What a great car. Has the nice room of a sedan. Nice interior with a lot of features. Love the reversing camera and sat nav. Great drive too Show details
I love this car!! – Brand new 2017 Maxx model, gorgeous colour and a dream to drive. Plenty of headroom in the front for adults and I am quite tall. The back is really for children or babies. The seats are comfortable. Mine is an automatic and it handles very well and takes off well from stopped. Fuel consumption is very economical. The rear camera is great, an… Read more
excellent safety feature. I find the i-stop annoying (the engine cuts out and restarts automatically when stopped in traffic) but it might work well when driving in the city. My previous Mazda was reliable, economical and good to drive and this one is a step up.
Mazda 2 sedan – I purchased the sedan as I wanted boot space and ease of accessing the boot that did not involve having to reach my arms far, as required with a hatch. The car size is good. We purchased rear sensors, as did not come with any! This car is easy to drive, including having a small turning circle. The car does not have automatic lights or wiper… Read more
settings. The head space in the back is an issue for 5' 9" son. Petrol consumption is good. Take off from standing is slow, breaks are reliable / satisfactory.
Another Mazda purchased! – good performance & driving experience Awesome red & black sports interior! Costs approx $55 to fill fuel tank very economical Front of car quiet low to ground so be careful over bumps in the road! Fourth Mazda I've owned! Dislike to maintain car warranty can only get Mazda serviced at same dealership Show details
Great first car – Great first car for my daughter ! Lots of safety features ,the reverse camera, anti roll and gps system with screen on the dash is great ! Petrol consumption is great and haven't had any problems mechanically since purchased.Zippy compact sedan easy to get around with and great to park ! Show details
Smooth engine – The Mazda2 2016 has the smoothest engine I have ever had. Its linear acceleration is awesome. If bored of this kind of acceleration? Hit the Sport button and you are like driving an MX-5 sport car. Power is enough for a NA 1.5-liter engine and very fuel efficient. Currently i am getting 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres city driving. Full freeway… Read more
driving should get just over 5liters. Going up hill is not an issue. It may not go so fast like a 6-cylinder car going up hill but not struggling. Speed increases as you go up the hill. The only thing I noticed is the paint easily get scratched. Other than that, no complain at all. Engine noise is evident when you step hard on the accelerator pedal but the sound is so pleasant. Like a sports car accelerating, not metal noise like most 4-cylinder cars around. Interior is nice. It's like a $40,000 car. Skyactiv technology is great unlike hybrid technology. 14:1 compression ration is awesome plus header exhaust. Like a racing car. Six gears auto transmission is smooth. Knows perfectly when to shift gears. That's all. Thanks.
Excellent First Car – Very good first car with a broad range of technology. It drives quite well, but it does tend to rev a bit high (something you'll get use too) Quite fuel efficient, I ranged about 500 - 600 km on one tank, lasting me about 2 weeks (don't be a lead foot and you wont have high fuel consumption) If you do want to speed up faster, then it does tend… Read more
to rev really high and loud. Interior quality is probably a 7 out of 10. Still a bit too much plastic, but it feels premium.
So far no major problems, just the air con can have a wet laundry smell when turned on (disappears after 5 min). Apart from that, its run very well, very fuel efficient. Would recommend as a first car or even just a spare car. Can be a little small if you want to carry things for camping etc.
As for fuel, just add 98 when you get the chance, it isn't that much more expensive than 95 (only about $5 extra) but you do get better fuel consumption and power from it (plus its better for your engine)
Mazda 2 maxx sport 2016 model (auto) – I bought another mazda because i have a cx5 for almost 1.5 years with no problems. Bad choice. Unlike the cx5 wwhich is built in japan the mazdA 2 is built in thailand. When i bought the car brand new it has problems already. The istop was not working since we bought it new. But we spoke to mazda about the issue and seems to be working now. In my… Read more
experience the istop is pointless. But we need it to work if we ever need to sell it. Then the new buyer will be like why isnt the istop working!!.
The second issue i had was when you park the car after driving and you put the car on park and handbrake up. There would be a glitch where the mzd lcd infotainment system screen would remain on. It would not turn off. The only way to fix this was turn on the car again and change thr gears up and down then park the car again.
In my opinion since the car is new and the car parts hasnt been moved/used much and is still stiff so to speak. The gear change would not lock properly in park, so i would push harder than normal when i move the gear to park. Just recently it stopped. Car seems to be ok for now when i turn off the car.
The third issue i had is the car would stall or lose power when driving the car uphill. Loses power lets say going uphill on your driveway or garage. At low speeds going uphill to park the car etc.. at thr moment i havent experienced losing power going up the freeway or entering the freeway uphill, maybe due to the speed and power i am accelerating the car. Whereas the driveway you are not driving 100km.
Servicing is expensive same as a cx5 or bigger car in the mazda range. Petrol im getting is about 7ltrs /100km. Freeway is about 6.5/7km per 100km not much difference. The car has done 3000kms.
My recommendation is get a cx3 since its the same car as a mazda2. The cx3 is made in japan. Also it is similarly priced to the mazda 2 about $2000 more. This is my experience. Would i buy a mazda in the future? Probably not. Most likely a toyota.
Mazda 2 is a great car but Skyactive automatic transmission shifts into higher gears to early – Have done 7000ks. Generally a very good car but auto transmission shifts into 5th & 6th too early (5th at about 50km/h and 6th at just over 60km/h) resulting in the little engine lugging at only 1,100rpm, at these speeds. It will shift down (a bit reluctantly) if you put your foot down but performance feels apathetic when cruising around with a… Read more
light foot. Sports mode is too much the other way and is too aggressive for normal driving. Can appreciate car is designed this way for economy but if it shifted into 5th and 6th at slightly higher speeds or had a setting between "normal" and "sports", it would feel peppier and much nicer to drive.

Great little car! – I just purchased my car and have had nothing but smooth sailing since. It's consistent and is quite responsive when needed. It handles great too! The interior is simple but nice, and enough space for passengers and gear. I haven't sat in the back yet... cause im driving but it does seem a bit cramped. Ehhh. Overall I'm happy with this city commuter. Show details
Absolutely LOVE my Mazda 2 Maxx – I purchased my brand new 2015 Mazda 2 Maxx a couple of months ago and I absolutely love it! It drives very smoothly, has GREAT fuel economy, lots of power and it looks so sleek and nice. I haven't experienced any faults at all with this car and I doubt I ever will. The only flaw that I can possibly think of is that the leg room in the back is… Read more
slightly cramped but only if you have tall people in the back. Other than that, it is the perfect car and I love my little mazda. I would recommend it to anyone!
*EDIT* I unfortunately no longer have this 2015 Mazda 2 Maxx as it was written off in February 2016. When deciding on what car i should buy next, I just had to go with a 2016 Mazda 2 Maxx ;) I honestly couldn't think of any other kind of car that I would want to drive, so the choice was pretty easy.
Its also worthy of noting that these cars are incredibly safe. When I had my accident, my two front airbags went off immediately protecting me from any serious impact. 10/10!
VERY disappointed by Mazda. Made in Thailand - Not as good as its predecessor – Ok First things first, this car is made in Thailand. I was given this car as a loan car for 2 weeks until my CX-5 was being repaired after an accident. I can tell you the difference between the 2 is striking (also the difference between the old generation Mazda 2). The Mazda 2 rattles, the gear box is sluggish and does not know when to change… Read more
gears and the engine does not produce power smoothly, as I accelerate a jerking response is being felt especially on acceleration. The i-stop completely sucks (but that applies to all new mazdas).
There are a number of rattles and creaks around the cabin and the plastics are hard all around, typical Thailand manufacturing, the difference with the CX-5 is astonishing and contrasts the Japanese vs Thailand quality of built.
Some positives, handling is superb, engine is zippy and braking is responsive and obviously it looks very good!!. However I would recommend the Renault Clio (which looks just as good) over this any day! Mazda really did not put much effort in the latest iteration of the '2' and it seems 'rushed' and poorly built. The previous generation mazda 2 was made in Japan, if you have driven it you will feel the difference.
Average. Some Issues – We bought the mazda 2 after comparing quite a few different vehicles and ended up choosing the 2015 Mazda 2 Maxx in Manual. I wrote a review in the first week where i was quite happy with the car. Its a week later and some initial nit picks are becoming real annoyances. The good first. The steering wheel and the gear stick are really nice. The… Read more
seats are very very comfortable, fully adjustable and the blue trimming of the doors and seats goes very well with the exterior colour. The head lights are quite good as well. The dash lighting is very nice and unobtrusive. The engine is ok, its relatively smooth and quiet, but it definitely doesn't have much get up and go about it. Mind you that is pretty standard for this class of vehicle. The clutch takes a bit of getting used to, however its manageable after some practice. Having said that, i won't be buying a manual mazda ever again. Now the bad. The brake and the accelerator aren't even with each other, so it requires a full leg movement, bending at the knee to go from one to the other, rather than a pivot at the ankle joint. This is very very inconvenient when driving and means that there is no rapid transitioning between the pedals if need be. This might be a personal thing too, but the accelerator is very up right and after half hour or driving around town, the muscle that runs up the front of my right shin was very fatigued and my hip joint from going from the brake to the accelerator was getting sore and tired. There isn't 1 thread of sound deadening material in the whole car. Driving at 60kmph or above sounds like you are sitting in a boeing as its taking off. The sound travels so well through the thin walls and floor of the 2 that you can even hear the fuel sloshing around in the fuel tank and after half hour on the road at 80kms i got out with a bit of a ringing in my ears!! NOW the dash!!! where do you start. Its so needlessly cramped, stupidly spaced and just plain doesn't make sense. The design of it is terrible for no reason. The aesthetics gained by the slim line through the center are broken by the single slot style air vent. There's only one of them, its out of place, looks silly and takes up room that would have been better served by oh.... the head unit instead of tacking it to the dash!? The multi-media unit is the worst ive ever seen. The Bluetooth was hard to set up, inconsistent and gets confused when there are 2 phones in the car. The iStop feature is useless unless you are in peak hour traffic maybe? But even then it seems not worth the hassle. Its also very hard to know when you have it on, when its working, and how it works and the manual doesnt clear up much at all (when the iStop light is on.... that means iStop is off....?). The entire center piece around the handbrake and the gear stick wiggles a concerning amount. According to mazda this is a standard affair but it screams cheap and nasty. Everything stains easily and all surfaces are magnets for finger prints. The fuel consumption of 6.6 around town is very wishful thinking. Its 15kms to work, all 60km zones, with 4 roundabouts. We are currently getting 8l/100km. Not impressed at all. Hopefully its better on the highway but from the few runs at 100kms we've had the variable fuel usage (which adjusts every 3 seconds instead of every 1 like other vehicles) rarely dips below 5.5l/100Kms. Thus far we are pretty disappointed with this vehicle. For the almost $20K price tag once you include all the optional extras like.... oh.... the center console (FFS!?) you'd expect a lot more for your money. If it were in the $15k price range with other small cars i'd say go with it, but if we had our chance again, we'd definitely be driving something else.
