Princess Cruises Dawn Princess

Did not realise how good it was – My first cruise was dawn princess in 2011 to fiji, there was a sale, free balcony upgrade. Talk about spoilt, i could not wait to go again. I have since been on carnival from Singapore and to Tasmania on p&o, neither of which i would do again. My next is on princess from Alkaska in September and although i can't afford a balcony this time (so… Read more
sad, i loved sitting on my balcony, just me and the ocean, so very cool) i can't wait, looking forward to restaurant food 3 times a day and the cabin crew most. Oh and decent entertainment.
Cruise you do not want to take again – I began making initial questions direct with Princess line about where and when the cruise was to leave, prices and as this was our 2nd cruise, would we get upgrade to a window cabin, Of course!!!!, But when we boarded told the cruise was full so no upgrade. The cruise line had not organised games for us during sea time, I hade day organised… Read more
excursions where we stopped, if not you just stayed aboard, and entertained yourself, the first cruise there was staff organising Bocce or card games, this time nothing, the dining was good on the second day, but then as the menu became boring I asked for fresh fruit for my meal, the head waiter brought out a disgusting plate set out ??? from the 4th day till 13 day it was hell , there was an outbreak of Gastro which lasted the 9 days left, when I asked for a apology it was given via the Princess line for the worst Cruise ever, so cruisers beware do your homework before saying or giving a deposit either to the line or travel agent. Do your own research cheap is not always Good in the long run. And get a reference that your trip will make all stops that it is supposed to make, or you will not be a Happy Cruiser as we had hoped we would be 2nd time round.
what a mistake! – We were also on its last cruise may 14th and no we were also unaware that it was the last cruise. would not do it again, the ship was certainly very run down nothing had obviously been fixed for a long time and anything that did go wrong was ignored by the ship, they did not want to know. God the smells!!! it was like a smokey-sewerage smell the… Read more
whole voyage and you could not get the smoke out of the cabins. So bad one night it set off our cabin smoke alarm at 2 am!!! and no appologies. ( Not just our cabin I am aware that it happened to quite a few cabins on decks 8 ad 9) the beings in charge said they could not smell a thing yet all the passengers were complaining and choking!!. no shops, an empty casino and not to mention that they ran out of everything and replaced nothing, The specialty dining room Steakhouse was just a badly partitioned part of the buffet and had filthy table cloths and shocking service, you really did not want to be there. Tours were a joke, one we were on silver 20 - james Bond Island, the boat broke down twice, the boat skipper drank Beer the whole 2 1/2 hours we were aboard, whilst in full view of all the passengers and the tour guide - who seemed oblivious that this was not ok behaviour!!! a tyre with a rope attached swung in and hit an elderly passenger on the arm/shoulder near the front of the boat ( no interest from tour guide at this just a laugh!! - her english was almost non existent except for trying to take us shopping which was NOT part of our tour) and instead of our buffet lunch they threw us a warm 1/3 of a subway and warm diet pepsi that had been on the bus for hours and was inedible!! what did princess do?? they gave us a $10 refund for the lunch what a joke. entertainment was a joke - yes it looked like they had gotten everyone out of a retirement home, pathetic
Cabin steward was very good though very apologetic, but could do nothing, and the onboard food that they did not run out of was ok too. ( though no room service not even at 9pm all we could have were rolls and butter!!!!) every one should have had a decent refund. the cruise was appalling, will stick to Royal Carribean in the future

Well done – The dining room staff were excellent. Always made us very welcome. Were informative and charming and made our dining experience great fun. Laura Rodriquez and Wasan Siriviseth were excellent. Thank you so much. Goodbye Dawn Princess we look forward to another Princess Ship. Trish
fantastic – This was my first cruise and I loved every minute of it. The cabin was my only glitch as four of us over 60 shared. We had specified no bunks, but that's what we got. I think it's more the booking centre's fault though. I would think anyone who could find fault with the experience has a problem. The Dawn has set the bar very high. I will be… Read more
cruising again as the entertainment never ended. Food exceptional. Drink package only way to go. But mainly the staff. absolutely brilliant and friendly, a credit to the Princess group.
Excellent cruise and crew, shame about the rude elderly Australian Passengers – Having just returned from a 26 night SE Asia cruise, I can say that the Dawn Princess was a great experience for me. I am lactose intolerant and found that the food options were many and varied which was great. The crew are exceptional. The entertainment was almost always terrific. My negative experiences? The on board web site was a… Read more
crock of poo and never matched the day's events. The Television information channel was a joke. Both of these are handled by a 3rd party though and not the fault of the ship.
The most negative part of my experience and why I will not cruise again in a hurry? RUDE ELDERLY AUSTRALIANS. If you think we have issues with the 'younger' generation - I can assure you it's nothing compared with the over 65's in general. Disgusting. Embarrassed to be an Aussie....

Last cruise!!!! – What to say about my Dawn Princess Cruise. Not what I exspexted. . I been on this ship before. Nobody told me,this is the last one.. Boring and more boring. Cruise 14 May Perth to Singapore 2017
I was totally disappointed – My wife and myself went on a 42 day voyage from Sydney to Japan and return. The ship tarted to run out of Australian beer,Vegemite and certain scotches. This was our 4th cruise with Princess and certainly the last. The entertainment was totally substandard. They must have hired some of the acts from a retirement home.On one night we had a chap doing… Read more
shadows with his hands and then another time a bloke making animals with balloons.I think they may have mistaken us for a kindergarten. The food I found ordinary, nothing special like on our previous cruises. On top of that we had water leeks in some suites, toilet problems and hot water failures.Princess need to lift their game or they will lose more customers.
Only if you're retired both mentally and physically – We went on a sight-seeing tour in Auckland. In pouring rain, where the bus leaked and nothing could be seen because of the extremely heavy rain and the driver's mike was faulty. He dropped us outside the main Museum - in the same pouring rain at a door that wouldn't open even when thumped upon. When I mentioned all this to the on-board… Read more
tourism office, the person was completely uninterested and said they'd check. When I mentioned we were being asked to pay for what we did NOT receive, then she looked absolutely baffled. This is grounds for legal action in Australia. After being told nothing, we re-checked the next day and were told "there will be a credit of $10 off your account. That's the decision". Not helpful, not interested.
There was a Mongolian night in the buffet - that wasn't anywhere near the barbecue + spicy sauces of real Mongolian food. I think what we got tasted like Chinese Cantonese.
No challenging and informative lectures for the at-sea days (too long) - like on NZ history or exploration of the regions in the 19th century.

Never Again – My partner & I left for New Zealand from Sydney on the 3-3-17 returning 16-3-17 with Dawn Princess after the 6th day we both came down with flu symptoms, after going to the Medical Centre on board he was diagnosed with Influenza so was quarantined (I on the other hand had the flu injection last year & think it stopped it becoming fully blown… Read more
influenza), after my partner had trouble breathing & being put onto a nebuliser type machine the next day (Medical Centre total of $710- not to mention numerous visits to the shop for cough mixture & head ache medication) the amount of people with coughs was incredible..Personally I think Princess Cruises really have to look at the way they sterilize their rooms as from reading these comments it is an ongoing problem,How do they clean the curtains sterilize the pillows as these objects are in the room where an infected person is coughing & sneezing as we all know when we leave the cleaning staff have not much time to get the rooms ready for the next lot moving in ...How on earth do they get away with coming into port with sick people on board & then letting them go out into the public (airports, train stations, taxi's, buses etc) to spread it,where are the health authorities?
Cancelling with them for an unexpected pregnancy was so stressful and awful – My husband and myself were really looking forward to our New Zealand cruise but couldn't go because we found out we were unexpectedly pregnant. I thought that a doctor's certificate saying I was ok to sail would be fine but Princess Cruises absolutely refused to take me after being 24 weeks. I wanted to be as honest as possible so I told them my… Read more
due date. Due to the fact that I was going to be 24 weeks pregnant before the cruise finished they refused to take me and did the 3 following. 1. Refused to discuss the cancellation with us as we had booked through an agent. 2. Refused to change the dates so we could go sailing after birth. 3. Took over $2500 as a cancellation fee. They really stamped all over the little guy and were a corporate money grubbing business who clearly doesn't care about the average Australian. We were devastated.
Princess Doesn't Care About Passengers' Health – We were on the Dawn's Hawaiian cruise late last year when about 80% of the passengers caught a pneumonia/bronchitis virus even resulting in some deaths. Princess seemed to be able to cover this up. Since coming home we have heard of 2 bouts of gastro on Princess ships and now Hepatitis E on another of their ships. Princess Cruises used to be top… Read more
notch but not anymore. Princess has really slipped!!! Maybe it is time the health department went through all their ships. My cruise for the end of this year has now been cancelled. "Come Back New" should be "Hope To Come Back Alive".
shame...shame... shame – Just had lunch with a male wearing a princess Cruise t shirt.. Not long home, he purchased his shirt on board. The artwork depicts a large map of Australia with Tasmania missing !!!! How is this possible. You visit Hobart I bet but you leave her off the map...this is unforgivable and I find it incomprehensible.....shame

Sick with Gastroenteritis – This review is belated as it has taken me some time to regain my health. I embarked at Freemantle on 10 Sept. on a cruise that was to be around the top end returning to Sydney on 27 Sept. I thoroughly enjoyed the first few days, had a wonderful time, but then late on day 4 I got gastroenteritis. I had been vigilant about hand sanitising &… Read more
always used the hand sanitisers when entering the eating/dining areas, but I noticed after a couple of days when I was lining up quite a few people entering Horizons buffet area were not using the hand sanitisers. I didn't see a staff member at the entrance to Horizons after the first couple of days. I always went to lunch at around 12 - 12.30, so I wasn't there at the end of the eating times. Also I never used the public toilets.
For the next 3 days I was confined to my cabin. The medical staff were very kind but I progressively got a lot worse. When the ship arrived in Darwin, I was ambulanced off to hospital, where I eventually flew back to Sydney. I have never felt so ill with gastroenteritis.
It was my first cruise & I'd been looking forward to it for months. Unfortunately, it will my last. Princess Cruises have a duty of care to passengers to have a staff member at the entrance to the buffet always to ensure that everybody entering hand sanitises. Of course this wouldn't totally stop the flu or gastro spreading but it would help.
Still sick after 35 day cruise in October – I have recently found this review site and was surprised to see the number of passengers who had the same experience as my husband and I. Firstly I need to say that we are still recovering from the viral infection we both caught on this cruise ship. As recently as Monday I was diagnosed with post viral vertigo, a very nasty illness that causes the… Read more
sufferer to keep falling down. We have been on numerous cruises, including 2 world cruises, and have NEVER been sick like we were on Dawn Princess and continue to be now we are home. While on board it appeared as if nothing was done to stop the spread of the sickness and just as you began to recover it would hit you again. We avoided the Princess Theatre due to the concentration of coughing individuals, many of whom failed to cover their mouths. We noted on several occasions in the coffee shop on the 5th floor, one particular woman who would cough and hack until she managed to cough up some mucus into her tissue. She would look at it, fold the tissue and place it between her breasts. The area around her would clear immediately. Then some poor passenger, who had not experienced the coughing, would come and sit next to her. I asked the wait staff if anything could be done, all I received was a quick shake of the head, obviously it could jeopardise his/her job. In the Horizon Court we found ourselves sitting next to passengers who in one case had been diagnosed with pneumonia on the day before. Our question is why Princess failed to confine these people to their cabins? Why the sick people were not supplied with face masks to halt the spread of the virus? Why there was no system in which the staff could report a coughing and obviously sick passenger to the medical centre and a nurse or someone suitably qualified, come to observe the passenger and take the necessary action to protect the other passengers? The wait staff would then remain anonymous and their job would not be put in jeopardy. It was Princess' failure to attempt to halt this outbreak that most disappointed us. We always bring our own medication, but antibiotics had no affect and because the spread of the sickness was not halted, our cruise experience was ruined and we continue to suffer from the illness and medical costs involved.
Not happy – Just got back from a 35 Day Hawaii cruise this is the second time on the same ship Dawn Princess that we have had a lung infection we have never ever been so sick the ship needs to be completely fumigated everybody on their were coughing even the dining room staff. We also did a World cruise 2015 same thing only we had the gastric flu. We are… Read more
still sick and don't seem to be getting better. As for the surveys you send no one listens S the same complaints such as smoking under the deck eatery still happens Princess Cruises needs to apologise to everyone who was sick ( whole ship)
Come Back New – Hang your head in shame Princess Cruises, the sickness of board was evident prior to pick up in Sydney in late September for the 35 night Hawaii cruise. antibiotics. This was our fifth cruise for my wife and I, four with Princess, first time on Princess Dawn and we where very disappointed that we shelved out roughly $20K for the experience that could and should have been very different.
Princess were not vigulant in the sanitation of the ship prior to loading, our balcony room was tired and not cleaned to the standard that is acceptable, light switches were filthy walls dirty that had simply not been wiped over in some time, my wife and I spent a lot of time in our room because we where coughing uncontrollable Pity the poor people that moved into our cabin on 1.11.16 the germs are still there.
Overview
Doctors visit and drugs over priced, basis cold and flue medication not available in shop Rooms not properly sanitized, Television programs are lame & scheduling of movies times not considerate of guests, Food quality was not as varied as past cruises and entertainment very average. Shore excursions booked through Ship double priced to what can be purchased on land, photo graphic people in your face at every opportunity.
My Wife and I have been strong supporters of cruising and promoting the Princess ships to others,
Unfortunately I believe that this experience on the Princess Dawn will be our last, COME BACK NEW is their catch phase, LUCKY TO GET BACK more like it.
Bronchitis and chest infecctions – Looked at previous reviews and saw very very similar report from October 2015. Our cruise was the whole of October 2016 , and we had exactly the same problems. A huge amount of people coughing and with chest complaints, ( doctors stated viral bronchitis ) . A lot of people sick. No panadol on board , cough mixture at exorbitant prices. Something… Read more
is sadly wrong here. It doesn't matter how good everything else is on the cruise as in entertainment and food , if you are not feeling well then it totally spoils the occasion. Would have to think very hard about cruising again. I have heard the term " floating Petrie jars " used for cruise liners , maybe that term is not far from the mark. No acknowledgement from any officials on the cruise about this health issue. Disappointing.
Illness-ridden Ship – We have also just returned from the 37 day South Pacific cruise on the Dawn Princess. The amount of illness on board was staggering. Some passengers were sick the entire cruise. It was disgusting with people coughing everywhere. Apparently the respiratory virus was present on the ship during the previous cruise, so passengers embarking in… Read more
Brisbane and Sydney walked straight into an already established incubator. I'd say that at least 80% of the 2,300 passengers became ill during the cruise, with many developing bronchitis and pneumonia. The medical centre was in overdrive and would have made a squillion in consultation fees and prescriptions. My husband and I both became ill towards the end of the cruise. He was diagnosed with pneumonia by our local doctor the day we arrived back. We are both still very unwell. Princess Cruises must take responsibility for this. All passengers should be medically screened before embarkation in order to avoid a repeat of this disease-ridden cruise.
Bronchial virus spoiled a wonderful cruise – We have returned on 1st of November,2016 after a 37 day cruise to the Hiwiian Islands. There was a very unpleasant chest virus on the ship. The word was that it got on the ship at Fremantle. However we boarded in Brisbane and had a couple of weeks befor getting bronchitis. I have been on many ships but have not seen this amount of sickness. I… Read more
brought my own antibiotics, which helped a great deal, but it didn't cure it and will be visiting my own GP to day. Some people left the ship and flew home with lung problems. we saw an ambulance pull up and a women was taken off ship with oxygen in tow. We felt sorry for her husband standing there, with baggage in a French speaking country and he would have to find his own way from there. Would love to know if the virus could have been contained? Thank goodness the noire visus didn't break out as well. No problems with staff who all did their best to help people to enjoy what could have been a holiday of a lifetime. Lola
Sickness throughout the ship – My mother, aunt and uncle have just returned after five weeks at sea ( departed 25 th September to Hawaii). They were cabin bound for over half the trip with a very agressive viral chest infection. My mother spent $800 on doctors and treatment on the ship. At one stage they thought she had pnumonia or the flu, however there were a lot of people… Read more
infected wih this virus. In Auckland the chemist was was full of passengers trying to obtain medicines as the ship had by now run out! I'll be following this up as I'm wondering just how many people were sick and what sort of infection control could have been in place to reduce the numbers affected eg handing out face masks. For the first week when they weren't sick they had a great time but it quickly deteriorated. No more cruising for them!
Do not feel quite 'new' – I have also returned with the aggressive cough for most of the last week. Add to that the viscious diarheagh for several days after and I am not impressed. The entertainment on board was the same for third consecutive time, eg Adam Dean and Billy London's jokes. Accomodation was fine, staff were very friendly. The food was rather boring and I… Read more
believe catered for Americans, ie lots of sugar and cream and of little substance. The surcharge slugged at most ports on top of port fees ($25) was unreasonable and not explained or advised in advance. These fees were collected whether you landed or not. The television in the rooms is mindlessly repetitive. I think I will reconsider my next booking.

activities seemed to overlap , which made it hard to participate when having early dinner seating. could not get a seat in vista lounge for trivia, tried several times but gave up. there seemed to be photographers around every corner waiting to pounce. also cost of photos very high. disappointed with hairdresser service, made appointment for last formal night, was left waiting for over an hour after appointment time, had to walk out as i was late for dinner and had friends and my husband waiting. wanted nice hair do for formal portraits, did not happen had to rush and do my own hair, still did formal portraits, which cost an arm and a leg , but felt obliged to buy, as hubby insisted. to be honest some photos we took ourselves turned out better then professional photos. even my mum said i looked horrible. so ladies give yourselves lots of time for these services as they are very slow and unreliable, and it can lead to disappointment . laundromat facilities are average, with many machine not working, and there are very few available, spent the best part of 90 minutes watching my washing going around in a very small room with no ventilation. also advise not to pre purchase beverage cards and coffee cards as they are actually available cheaper once you get on board, so there is no incentive. did get the difference refunded. this was my first cruise and i enjoyed some aspects of it, but i would do more research before booking another cruise. air conditioning was also rather poor, cabin got very warm and stuffy , certain parts of ship especially casino got quite cold, i have returned home with the worst cough and runny nose i have ever had in my life. i certainly don't feel like i have come back brand new.
Disappointing – I'm 33 and recently cruised in August the Treasures of Asia 12 nights on the Dawn Princess. I expected a cruise with older passengers but I wasn't prepared for what I experienced with a majority of them in their late 60's and 70's even 80's hobbling around the ship in their gophers and walking frames - exactly what I read in another review it was… Read more
like having a holiday in a nursing home..... To match this there were no activities that would interest my generation. Activities included carpet bowls, knitters meetings and seminars on dealing with arthritic pain haha to name a few... The only joy I got was the food buffet and getting off in Singapore where I stayed for 4 extra nights with my mum. Even mum I'm her mid 60's had enough and was ready to jump off haha with the constant whinging from the older peeps on board.
Fantastic crew I couldn't fault how lovely and hard working they were, so friendly too. The crew were amazing!! and our cabin was great but that's all the positive's I can say.
So if your 40 years or younger I strongly recommend you don't take this cruise.

Wonderful trip to PNG – This was our fifth cruise with Princess. This trip was very well run with an informative captain (the best ever), a well run tender system and great dining. The staff were all very attentive and the shows were terrific. The relentless sales of cheap junk were a bit wearing. Overall enjoyable holiday with minimal illness on board.

January 4th 2018 Update: Never again
In May 2016 I posted a review regarding Sea Princess which unfortunately my husband and I traveled on for 42 days. He of course was unlucky enough to be infected. All the facts I stated in that review obviously have not been taken seriously and it saddens me to see over 200 people infected by a gastric virus disembarking today 4th Jan 2018 in Brisbane from the Sea Princess (a ship that should have been retired 4 yrs ago).
Do your home work folks before you travel.
Here you are taking a chance with your life.

'An excellent cruise' – We did the 12 night cruise from Fremantle to Sydney and could not fault it. First And Last Cruise With Princess Cruises – My husband and I recently completed a Princess Cruises 13 night cruise to Vanuatu and New Caledonia on Dawn Princess. the bed mattress. It was well used and had two deep furrows running from head to foot. The outsides had no support so you felt like you would roll out of bed. We raised the issue to our room steward who tried to make improvements which didn't help much. So we had poor sleep which affected the experience. The balcony room was quite small and the bathroom very cramped. The toilet also didn't flush properly. One of the forward lifts never worked and two other lifts would frequently miss our floor. On our return we raised these issues in the email questionnaire and also on a feedback email to which we have not received a response.

I have done 31 Cruises now and I must say that Princess Cruises are a cut above the rest. The food is superior, The Live shows are superior and the general service is exceptional compared to a lot of other cruise lines. The current UK Cruise director " Billy London" is a fantastic guy. He would come over and chat to me on a daily basis. He has had 39 years experience on Cruise ships all over the World.
I was really happy with the Stateroom on Rivera deck, however the toilets broke down and the carpet was a bit smelly for a few days. Apart from that the only other negative was that some of the food like the Bolognase and a few other meals were drenched in salt. Apart from that the food was Fantastic.
I had an awesome Lobster Tail and Prawn Dinner on the last formal night and it was amazing.
The food in Horizons Buffet is also excellent with so much variety. The variety of pastries and Cakes are fantastic.
My 4 year old Daughter got to play all day in the Pelicans Kid Club and she had so much fun there.
Movies under the stars on Riviera Deck is awesome. The deck chairs have a really thick cushion, awesome head rest and a blanket. Free Popcorn is also provided for each screening. You can also see daytime movies in the Princess Theatre during the day and the awesome shows at night. Get in early for a good seat.
Unlike other Cruise company's like P&O, Princess Cruise have the tenders managed perfectly. They make it very quick and easy to get you on and off the ship very quickly and you do not have to wait too long.
All in all it was a very good cruise. Even though it is an old Ship, it still has a lot of Character. This ship is identical to the Sun Princess. The Dawn Princess will be handed over to the P&O fleet and re badged / renamed in Early 2017 after a dry dock and a semi re-fit.
You will have a great time on any Princess Cruise, they just have the edge over most cruise ships I have sailed on. Have a positive state of mind going onto the Dawn Princess and just remember at the end of the Day the Cruise is as good as you wish to make It! Hope you find this helpful and Have the time of you life!
Dawn Princess questionable hygene – We went on a cruise on the Dawn in September 2015. the jug in the cabin. I agree with the other people who complained about the air conditioning on the Dawn, it is such an old ship and should be thoroughly cleaned on a regular basis as it seems to be a problem with this ship, there was water leaking from the air conditioning continually and in different parts of the ship no wonder so many people leave the cruise with either chest infections or bowel problems. I have previously cruised on the Sun Princess and had no problem whatsoever and am looking forward to having another cruise on the Golden Princess, but if the Dawn was the only cruise ship I could go on I would never cruise again, she is an old tub and needs to be pensioned off.
