Hassle free mower – Bought this mower 15 years ago and it’s never missed a beat, only now the starter cord isn’t retracting so well, never ever laid a tool on it except to change the blades, no oil change, air filter clean, nada! Show details

Reliable-had mine over 22 years! – I bought it new over 22 years ago and, apart from sparkplugs and one fuel gasket, it hasn't missed a beat. I got a crack in a handle mounting point but, being a steel deck, I was able to weld it up about 10 years ago and the weld is still fine. It is load, maybe I need to check the muffler! Show details

This has been the best mower I have ever owned – The Rover with a Briggs and Stratton 375 EasyStart Engine has been the most reliable mower I have ever owned. I bought it in 1999 when I was out of Uni and it has been going strong until the engine finally blew today. That is over 20 years of use without missing a beat and starting the first time the cord is pulled. They do not make them like this anymore and regrettably I will have to get rid of it. Show details ·  1

easy start Maquarie – Bought my mower three months ago and am disappointed with it , I would never buy another . Looks shiny and red and had a mulching plug and a washing connection so I thought it would be great. First issue was a safety lever on the handle , each time you let go of the lever the mower stops . This is very annoying when stopping to pick up dog poo ,… Read more

kids toys , rocks bones etc . The most annoying part of this mower is it doesn't cut the whole lawn , it misses random blades of grass all over the place so you need to go back over the stuff you already mowed . My old two bladed mower cuts better than this four bladed version. finally the revs fluctuate up and down constantly , I use a cable tie to hold the safety handle in the one place so It doesn't stop when I do . On the upside it does start first pull each time I have used it so far which is good . The local mower shop was pushing these dearer mowers over the cheaper Victa so god knows what they're like . Height adjustment is also good and can mow lower than some others I have used .

Worst mower we have owned – We bought the Rover i4500, it's been nothing but trouble. We paid for a repair which cost nearly as much as the mower and after one lawn mow, it's stopped working again. After reading other posts on the net ane saw the Rover repair centres won't fix this machine I wonder why Rover ever put their name to such a terrible mower.  Show details

World's Worse 2 Stroke Mower – This is one of the worst mowers I've ever owned. I bought it from Injak Mowers in Nambour and even the mechanic there admitted it was very difficult to start. Easy start my bum. The only good thing I can say about it is that it is more fuel efficient than my four stroke Victa and unlike the Victa's poor wheel engineering, I have never lost a wheel off my Rover. What I would love is a Victa motor on a Rover deck.

Lives up to the name - starts first pull every time. I bought this for $50 off a bloke that just used it to mow a 18x3m strip in front of his house. Probably the best $50 I've ever spent. Had it for 5 years now and serviced it once in that time and it's been faultless. The catcher flap just broke but I've managed to find a replacement but just be aware that it seems that now that it's been discontinued parts are in short supply. Show details

One of the best value hassle-free mowers Rover ever produced – The Rover Easystart (and by extension, it's almost identical successor the Quickstart) is without a doubt one of the best entry level mowers money could buy in it's day. They were among the cheapest in Rover's product lineup in the 90's and 2000's, missing out on luxuries such as ball bearing wheels, 4-blade disc, and bent-over comfort grip handle… Read more

bars. However in spite of their simplicity they are still a delight to use, and I pick up any good ones i can get my hands on. The Briggs and Stratton Sprint 375 and 37 motors used on them really are phenomenally easy to start, as well as being quiet, smooth, and basically bulletproof. Whilst they are not the most powerful engine in standard tune, they have enough for most peoples needs in suburbia. And if you want more, you can at your own risk, tickle a few more revs from these motors without any real teouble. Despite having only a twin-blade cut disc, the finish this mower leaves is absolutely superb, being flat, even, and picking up clippings very effectively. Even with it's smaller 7 and 6 inch bushed wheels and straight handle bar, it is easy and comfortable to push, and quite light and manouverable if axles are kept greased so the bushes dont wear out.

The only minor complaint one might make is that the highest cutting height is possibly a tad low for some peoples liking... Particularly buffalo lawn owners.

Ther are few problems to speak of outside of the normal chassis rust, or worn out wheels that come with lack of proper care. Earlier ones ith a metal flap can develop c4acks in the top corners of.the flap, but these are yet to cause any adverse issues for me regarding operation. The blade boss can sometimes fail due to fatigue, but whilst this is a known issue, it isnt common, as such. The deck can crack nea the handle mounts but this is usually as a result.of rust eating away the thickness of.the steel... Proper car after use (wash all grass from beneath deck then run it and leave to dry thoroughly) will reduce the likelihood of this occurring.

Ifyiu can get an Easystar in good condition cheap, its well worth the money. Much better than any current mower at an entry level price point.

Reliable old girl – Great reliable mower I picked up from the tip for $20 6 years ago. Brought it home replaced oil and spark plug and first pull every time it kicks over. Runs like a dream does a good job of the lawn. Nice strong Briggs and stratton 4 stroke can get through the thick stuff with ease. Which I could buy it brand new id pay the $. Show details

Very reliable for 30 years use – Bought this mower new in 1985 and used for 30 years. Very reliable with good performance from Briggs & Stratton four stroke engine. Easy to use but noisy. Only serviced every two years with an oil change, air filter clean and a new spark plug. Only other maintenance required was the occasional new cutting blades. Replacement new Victa mower not as good! Show details

A solidly made product – I've had this mower at least 25 years, it's been serviced a few times, and still runs well, an amazing buy as far as appliances go. On the strength of that I've just purchased another Rover with old guy's drive assist, a Duracut 850. If it is made as well as the last one it should see me through till when I'm 93 and my kids say dad we'll come over and do the lawn.  Show details

It’s a good mower – Had this mower for 15 years. I park it under cover when not using. I’ve had it serviced once, which I probably could have done myself and hence it’s still running on the same spark plug. Every time I go to start it, I put the throttle on full, pump the primer 3 times then pull the start cord. If it doesn’t start I pump once and pull again. If it… Read more

didn’t start then I prime once again and then it always starts with the next pull. If it hasn’t started it’s due to my lack of care, I remove the plug and give it a little clean up and away she goes. On the odd occasion I’ve over primed it and have to wait because the carburettor is flooded.

Easystart 17 years on – Failed on first day ,repair person made me pay claiming I used dirty fuel and was not warranty issue. Once that bogus dirty fuel diaphragm issue fixed no problems until this week 17 years later. Mowing 1/4 acre lawns all the time. Serviced 2x only. Has rusted out the body ,Briggs and Stratton motor still fine so I'm looking for a replacement shell only. Good mower. never changed the blades just sharpened 1x.  Show details

23 years of friendship has come to an end – Bought my Rover Easy Start with Briggs and Stratton 375 Sprint engine in 1993 when I bought my first house. Had it ever since without it missing a beat and starting 1st or 2nd tug of the cord every time. For the first 15 odd years I changed the oil and s/plug and cleaned the air filter annually and changed the blades when needed. Last 8 years… Read more

whenever I remembered (probably every 2 years plus). Great mower. Yesterday turned her over to mow the lawn and got smoke, a loud knocking (despite the oil being recently replaced) and then bang and a wind down to nothing. Devastated. A great relationship has come to and end. Shame too. Catcher, deck, etc perfect and could all go another 23 years.

Hard to start – I have had a Pope mower with a Briggs and Stratton 4 stroke. It was always hard to start until I discovered that if you wait a little while after priming it,it will start.I also found that changing the oil is a bit of a drama as you have to tip the mower on it's side to drain out the oil.

quick start crap – I used it about 3 times and now it will not start at all. change spark plug and carby gaskets but still the same.Took to machanic and he can't fix it.what a heap of rubbish.I suggest no one by any rover mowers they are rubbish. angry Rob if you want more words their would be a lot of swearing.

starting issues with this mower – Briggs and stratton mowers struggle to pick up the fuel when there is dirt under carburettor where it mounts onto fuel tank.Always make sure your fuel is clean and fresh.Avoid leaving mower in the rain as water can enter fuel tank through breather hole in petrol cap.If hosing the mower off the same rule applies. If your mower becomes hard to start… Read more

remove carburettor from tank and clean and replace the diaphram and gasket. This will cost about 20 dollars in parts.Clean every orrifice in carburettor with carb cleaner or compressed air.If starting is still a problem check that there isnt grass clippings caucht around throttle linkage near the wire for the kill switch. When the throttle plate returns to the off position, you will see a small metal tooth shaped like a sharks fin sticking up.This is what the throttle hits to earth out and stop the spark to stop the engine.Sometimes grass clippings get caught here and make starting difficult.

My Rover easy start mower – I have had this mower since 03 just replaced the blades 2 months ago, mind you I only have a small lawn. Starts well every time. My recommendation is to keep it clean look after it well and it will last for many years. A very pleasant introduction to Rover for us.

Easy start, every time – Got this in 2004 and true to the name it is easy to start. Hit the primer 3 times and it starts without issue, even after 3+ months in storage. Hasn't had much love in that time - DIY replaced plug, filter and blades no more than 2-3 times. I find the air filter clogs up frequently though it's easy enough to replace or clean & oil. I'm sure it… Read more

would run/cut even better if I kept blades and filters regularly maintained :)

The catcher also cracked/split at the mouth, maybe as a result of the mower hitting something hard though doesn't appear to have spread over the last couple of years.

The height adjustment is pretty average.... I find it often won't hold the setting and sags a little over the course of a mow.

Easy??? – Our experience with this mower is that it is anything but easy to start. It has never started first time and sometimes starts after long delays and much effort and gesticulating. Easy Start; just as it says – With a good pull; you’ll not be left frustrated with this Rover!? necessary in my location.

When I bought my Rover from Retra Vision 11 years ago ($375.00) I had maintained it by; applying new blades, a sparkle plug and changing its oil accordingly. Since then, with some neglect on my part to this day I have become slack and yet the Rover just keeps on mowing. This of course reminds me to do some tidying up…

I put this down to the Briggs and Stratton motor!? For that matter, if you’re not mechanically inclined just buy a Briggs and Stratton whatever mower and it will look after itself? Ha! But of course this is a myth; even the best motors will pre-maturely end sooner than later when neglected.

My only negative comment about 'this particular model' is that the petrol neck is on an awkward angle! When I pour fuel, I use a funnel and there’s always a small residue of petrol remaining; which I have to tilt my funnel sideways, not to spill it all over the ground and back in the tin. Tough, Reliable & Easy to Start Petrol neck is on an awkward angle

Good – A good buy for small to medium size yards. Users must be prepared to maintain the air cleaner with regular cleaning as the engine is sensitive to this being blocked with dirt. This involves undoing one screw, removing the sponge element and cleaning. Cheap to buy and run, easy to start if maintained, renewable blades (not whole baseplate),… Read more

Good – these mowers are designed to be used in the average backyard with 20square meters of lawn to do, not for mowing 1 hectare! these mowers are designed with a poor air filtration system that requires regular attendance to achieve acceptable running! because of the carby set up they often require a slight turn of the inlet screw to achieve optimum… Read more

smooth running, and low fuel consumption.

as long as you keep the air filter clean and check and replace the oil regularly, you should have a fairly reliable mower.

OK – Fairly decent domestic backyard lawn mower. Robust enough quality for the low price. Keep right on top of the oil changes. Check the oil level every time before you start it. Routinely check and replace the crappy foam air filter. Use this once a week for an average yard along with the right maintenance and it should last 10 or more years. Cheap.… Read more

Really easy to start. Enough power for medium length grass ie: 80-100mm. Plenty of cheap spares around eg: filters, blades, catchers etc. Reliable and durable enough if used sparingly. Air intake filtration very poorly designed and positioned. Filters rapidly clog up with dust and oil. Noisy engine with lots of vibration which shakes the handle cinching nuts loose. Fuel Tank is tiny. The pressed steel chassis and catcher flap rusts out. The engine may outlive the chassis.
