Please allow me to preface this report with the fact that we still own an operating VERY OLD KELVINATOR FRIDGE that my parents purchased new in 1952!……………… In 73 years, all that it ever asked for, was a new Thermostat!…. Even the Seals and Inner Plastics are still intact !!!!!! …………… In 1980, while courting my fiancée, we purchased 2 RankArena Cyclic Defrost 360 litre Fridges as we were living in 2 houses. They’re still in operation flawlessly as 24/7/365 beer fridges at work and in the garage ……… 46 YEARS ON !

……………………………………………

One extreme to another these days, with endless rubbish Refrigerators posing as “Cutting Edge Latest Technology” that don’t even come close to surviving the warranty!…………………. You have to wonder what they were thinking, when they can’t get correct, the basic functions required of a fridge, yet think people are happy to throw the new fridge away every 4 to 6 years when it’s not viable, or even possible in my case, to repair these “nightmares” foisted upon us. …………….. If it’s not the MotherBoard, it’s the IceMaker, or the inbuilt “Soda-Stream”, or the PC built into the door, or the Automated Stock Control, etc etc!…………..

So many modern cars are no better!……………

Circa 2014/2015, we ordered a new Samsung approx 680 L side by side 2 door Fridge with its own Soda Stream System built in, plus filtered fresh cold water, plus crushed or whole ice pieces; all dispensed on f door without opening fridge. For the next 2 years, the technician was summoned to address the unsolvable desire to run too warm throughout, and minor issues with the Soda Stream and Ice Maker. 5-7 visits failed to help solve the main issue. ………..

Samsung offered to swap but our model was no longer available, and no other model of similar size had the SodaStream System. ……….

So we settled for a smaller approx 630 litre model with similar features. Within months, this 2nd fridge began playing up severely with its Ice Maker System they could not resolve, even after 5-7 visits by their mechanic. ………. Fridge no 3 was delivered and no 2 taken away. This 3rd fridge, the 647L French Door model in the above subject line, only came even tho warranty had expired, because we highlighted under duress, that problems were non stop from fridge no.1 and their name was on the line. ………….

Things went well for over 2 years, before the water dispenser decided to begin freezing and refuse giving water and making new ice. Again, the mechanic would make his “pilgrimage” to our kitchen several times which in a desperate move, pulled the fridge apart to expose some very poor design and poor engineering that I, as a VACC Automotive Engineer and Air Conditioning Technician, could see immediately……….

Because every other feature was working, we refused their offer of refund of what we paid 10 years earlier, due to many price rises in that 10 years, and hoping to be better off sticking with the “devil we knew”. The refund would be pushing it to buy a bar fridge ! ………..

It’s a sad indictment on our chinese white goods industry that permeates the world because good quality is no longer made due to more than double cost price for quality that humans refuse to buy. We only have the world financial crisis to blame, as 99% of all purchases of every single white goods is chosen as the cheapest possible. ………….

Don’t know what we’d do without our other VINTAGE FRIDGES that have been a miracle and Godsend on more than a few occasions!…………. Lord Kelvin would be truly chuffed and honoured!……….. Unfortunately, his name has been truly INSULTED, as it has been hijacked to this day on appliances of very poor service quality, and lack of longevity like most on today’s market.

Good fridge let down by the ice maker – The fridge itself is good. Does everything a fridge should with ample capacity. The let down is the ice maker which we use regularly. I have gone through all the troubleshooting options and still end up with clogged ice at the top of the maker. Constant removal of the ice catcher has now cracked the plastic. I'm literally having to try and chisel ice out every 3-4 days so ice can to start to form and fall. I'm going to turn it off and go back to ice trays.

Amazing Fridge – I love this fridge. This was a Bosch replacement and we have had it for 5 months now and it is exceeding our expectations in every way. Love the internal water jug. Don't use the external water function much as it is quicker to use the jug and found the flow a little slow. The ice maker is fabulous and the deli drawer is such a great feature. Also love the fact it doesn't have handles as they can't break like our old Bosch.

The freezer is large and suits our needs. Honestly over the moon with this purchase. Could not be happier. Price was great 3k from Harvey Norman and considering Bosch refunded $957 dollars it was a 2k purchase. So happy highly recommend.

Wunderbar – I reviewed the Samsung SRF680CDLS recently as we were very disappointed with that model, twice...... Long story but with a good ending, as Samsung delivered excellent service. In short, that model had issues with the ice maker and in-door water dispenser. Samsung replaced the fridge twice and when we were choosing the final model we came across the upgraded SRF644CDLS, which is basically the same model, more expensive, slightly less volume but more economical. This is mainly due to better insulation.

Importantly, however, Samsung listened and fixed the known issue with the ice maker in this model. Just by looking at it one will notice a better design and improved workmanship, the new unit is better sealed as it has to be because it's a mini freezer within the fridge space. No more problems ! The water/ice dispenser unit on the outside also improved.

They did away with the door handles and the fridge looks very sleek and modern and has an added extra, an indoor automatic filling water jug for plenty of never ending chilled water.

One will have to get used to finding and using the door grips ( under the door ) and the lack of handles mounted on the outside means that the user will leave finger prints/smudges on the door, but they do come off very easy with a swipe of a damp cloth.

Overall rating: 6 stars and well done Samsung. I am glad we persevered and chose Samsung again, despite the earlier issues.
