Works well, a bit noisy, can make excellent coffee. Some build issues – This review is a reflection on the Artista after 15? years of constant use... Build: solid, a bit noisy in operation Ease of use: largely manual, have to time shot yourself, some user customisation in water temp. Design: single boiler, variable temp for steam, water, shot - pump is standard italian ucla 50hz pump. No pressure regulator - large… Read more

capacity water tank Group head - with single / dual double walled filter baskets - standard size used by krupps, breville etc. + accessories. Making Coffee: for the best tasting coffee, get some single wall filter baskets and a Burr coffee Grinder ~ with the right combo: beans, grind, tamp & time you can get full flavoured shot with crema and the exact taste you like. Stretching-texturing milk: Stream wand only single hole (not 3 like upmarket machines) - takes experimenting to get right and not easy to get right consistency for decorating lattes. Overall: if you like long black coffees, once you get your process right (eg DONT let the brown rats tails of the coffee stream go pale or clear - stop the pull before this) it makes excellent coffee. ISSUES: the Chromed group head collar is made of diecast zinc, and the four lugs holding it to the frame are under strength and can end up cracking - an early sign is water leaking around the group head - it’s not the rubber seal. I scrounged a replacement off a disused machine (no spares) to keep mine going, but eventually I think that one will go too. The group head only needs to be tightened lightly to minimise stress on the weak lugs. Otherwise, it has been a faithful servant. :)

Awesome machine! Still punching after 9 years – Got it free off a mate. Brews an excellent coffee, and still has excellent steam pressure despite never once being descaled. My only complaint would be the silver on the buttons coming off, but it doesn't affect form or function in any meaningful way.  Show details

Great Machine – Elegant, quick and easy! Great first coffee machine to have. Does most things perfectly, not too large and not overly complicated. The warming tray is a bit small for my liking but the rest of the functions perform with little hassle and give a great end product. Cheers to coffee :)  Show details

Cold espresso – Machine noisy but easy to use not bad coffee but for what I paid disappointing that I cannot get hot espresso. Have complained to Sunbeam but didn't help. Tried warming the cup and followed the instruction booklet but still no hot coffee just warm. Don't buy if you only drink espresso. When purchased staff did not no much about the machine.

Excellent coffee machine for the money – Yes I did own a Em5900 and liked the easiness of brewing .A bit noisy but taste was good enough to buy the next one but they don't make them any more. That makes this review useless and I usually don't buy refurbished/2nd hand ones as a rule for these machines. Hope this helps.

A great beginner's machine – I bought it in Briscoes NZ as a packaged deal with a grinder in 2011 after I left my first cafe job as a back-of-house staff. It helps me practice my coffee-making skills continually while I try to find front-of-house cafe work after I left university last year. It makes consistent espresso shot with great crema, it gets the desired result with… Read more ·  1

a shiny-looking milk, but it does take quite a while to get to temperature, unlike the time it takes to warm up the machine itself. Very easy to use and clean, consistent espresso shot (albeit fast) and it is very quick to warm up the machine. You have no idea about the water pressure and whether you have a good espresso shot. The advanced setups are also uneasy to notice a difference. The machine may be quick to warm up, it does take a relatively long time for the milk to heat to the correct temperature.

I love a good coffee – First of all, this is a noisy mofo, but it does brew a good coffee. Until we moved recently, our kitchen was from the Stone Age so when you turned this machine on it would make everything on the benches rattle. It's not a good machine to have if your baby's room is next to the kitchen either. None of those problems now, although its still rather… Read more

loud.

Despite that, it brews fantastic coffee, has a hot water function for tea, and takes coffee pods that are available online. Yummy yummy coffee A bit loud

Terrible – don't bother with this model in particular, perhaps sunbeam make better ones in the higher price brackets. if this is the $500 bracket then i'd hate to think what the cheaper models are like. in short: landfill material less and less. actually, nothing, i'm getting a breville 800 series instead i'm just about to take my second replacement… Read more

back to the store and change it to a breville. the first the heat coil died within 2 months. my replacement is a 'serviceable used part' as the IT industry so nicely calls it. when i got it out of the box it was still wet. the pump was horrendously noisy on this clearly repaired unit. the coffee came out so i put up with it until now (approx 6 months) and now the pump is stuffed and won't pump anything.

Good machine – Received the Artista 4 years ago as a birthday present and have been using it fairly often ever since (it got me through my uni days). It still works like a charm, with very minor leaks from the top of the coffee handle when the brew is coming through, but nothing too much to worry about. Easy to clean/use Can be a bit noisy, especially early morning

Fantastic machine for the price – I received the Artista for Christmas 2010 and it has been fantastic. Makes great coffee, easy to use and froths milk to a treat. This was the first coffee machine that I have owned and I couldn't be happier. Its great design allows us to leave it on the bench. Highly recommend this product. Well done Sunbeam! freedom to be experimental with your coffee making. Nothing. Not sure if it is noisy. I haven't made a habit of listening to other coffee machines when I am out.

A great coffee machine, so easy to use – Purchased this from Big W at a great price. Makes a great cup of coffee, is easy to use, and allows you to easily adjust the size of shot. Makes two cups at a time, is easy to operate and the milk frother produces just the right milk for all types of coffee. Ease of use, makes a great cup of coffee and froths the milk well

I can't start my day without a coffee from my Artista – I bought the Artista when my last coffee machine finally gave up after 8 years of daily use. It was also a Sunbeam but a cheaper manual version. I was really happy with Sunbeam but wasn't so sure about an automatic coffee machine. I managed to get a terrific deal online through big W so rather than going with the same model as lat time, I… Read more

decided to upgrade. The machine is easy to use, producing perfect crema with every cup. It also has a hot water function (for hot chocolates) as well as the standard steam function. It is my most favorite appliance hands down! The coffee is great, the machine looks good on the bench and the brushed stainless steel is easy to clean. Just a really terrific product! Makes cafe quality coffee every time

Excellent – A very good machine that can make barista style coffee instantly. I can make the milk almost marshmallow fine as the steam coming from the wand surprised me. I have an old Breville grinder now about 14 years old and until now hardly used. It’s set to fine and grind as I go. I took out insurance for an extra 2 years or so no matter what happens I… Read more ·  2

will be covered. UP UNTILL I BOUGHT THIS MACHINE I THOUGHT I WOULD NEED A MIN OF $840 for a Lucy. After looking at coffee machines for a year I decided to buy the sunbeam as I thought I would still be looking for another year despite hearing people say it does not make a good coffee. It does. I can make great coffee on skim milk which says something. Try doing that in a shop!!!! It heats up quickly and ready to use in 30secs or so. I paid under $500 for it and am quite surprised at the results I get. I have read what people said about the basket but after trying an open one I had went back to the original. I would like a bigger milk jug to make two or more mugs of coffee in one hit.

Bad – I am also getting uneven flow through the two spouts - with the left hand side only producing half as much coffee as the right. I got this machine as a present for my birthday - I have approached sunbeam about my issues and am going to take it back. I am really not happy with it. My only problem will be if I can get something better for the… Read more

price??? I think the frother is not too bad. and certainly the price is good. I agree with previous reviewers - this machine is NOISY!!!! Almost to the point where I can't make a coffee until after my daughter has woken up (we live in a small unit). The pressurised basket is annoying - doesn't seem to let sufficient flow through to make a good strong coffee. I find myself having to have double shots. I was interested to read some of the comments and suggestions on this - but really, why should i have to go to that effort for a new machine???

Chuck30

Uneven flow is caused by uneven tamping; I've noticed that the tamp on this machine is poor so perhaps you should purchase one off ebay and try again

Excellent – I think its a good machine. You can make flat white or espresso and if you buy good coffee its hard to tell the difference from the coffee shop. it beats mcdonalds coffee anyway. Lets me make grate coffee at home. Takes as much time to clean it as make coffee. I dont know how much it cost cos it was a gift.

Very good machine that makes coffee better than you can get at some cafes! – Spent a lot of time researching mid-range coffee machines and finally decided on the Artista. Very happy so far, having previously owned a Breville Ikon that carked it after two years of use. For a reasonable price (a bit more than what we wanted to pay, but worth it in my view) it produces great crema, it froths milk very well for a mid-range… Read more

machine and there is enough clearance to be able to put a decent sized mug under the group handle. Unlike the Breville Ikon it has two spouts on the group handle so you can easily make two coffees at once, which is great when you have guests.

One of the things I love most about it is how quick it is to warm up - it's ready for use in no time at all.

Like other reviewers have said it is a bit noisy but I think all coffee machines are, and given the positive attributes of the machine the benefits outweigh the one con. Quick to warm up, great crema, good milk frothing, good cup/mug clearance and looks great too. A bit noisy

Great value for money – This is the first espresso machine we have bought and it is fantastic. Very easy to use. The first time I have ever used one or made myself a coffee, I simply followed the steps in the instruction book and was enjoying a delicious coffee within minutes. Bad – I had a perfectly working machine which brewed really nice coffee, nice crema, fairly quiet operation for a coffee machine etc. I didn't bother with the milk frother because i can't be stuffed with that. A month in, the heating unit stopped. wouldn't initialize it properly when turned on and just put thru cold water. steam wouldnt steam, hot… Read more

water obviosly not working as well. I rang customer service and they were very nice (tick for that), but said you just get a replacement from myer where you bought it.

my replacement model was clearly an serviced unit that has done millions of coffees because the thing is so noisy it wakes the neighbours when making a coffee. the cream system is shoddy and it doesn't make as nicer coffee as the first one. the whole thing vibrates so much that if you don't hold your coffee cup in place it would vibrate it off the tray.

useless pile of $500 sh*** - i was a happy customer. I will not be getting this thing repaired after the warranty expires.

try another brand. :( used to make a nice coffee sniff sniff replacement warranty sucks. you are better off getting your newer machine fixed somewhere so you know the mileage of your machine

OK – Makes good coffee if you spend time with it. Too noisy would be my biggest complaint. Some people (including the Sunbeam "Barista" teachers) recommend you remove the pressurised basket replaceing it with a non-pressurised basket (Krupps MS 0907163 - 2 Cup Basket) and remove the plastic insert in the group handle. I have and the result works… Read more

well. produces good quality coffe - but you do need to get the grind right - having a home grinder really helps, I found we grind "finer" than I 1st expected but it works good. Noisey! Vibrates a bit, I dont usually try making 2 cups at onceFrothing seems very unforgiving - probably my technique but I don't seem to be able to get good microfoam before heating milk too high. Its a work in progress

OK – Basic unit and can make a reasonable crema if tamped down firm and the grind is perfect. Takes a while to get this right. The steamer, no matter how hard I try, still get too many small bubbles in the froth. pay for. Looks ok and has some nice chrome that can polish up. Really do not like the group handle 'cup'. If Sunbeam had just extended the side spouts (where the coffee is dripped into the cups) by a fraction then I wouldn't have to hold one cup up to save the coffee running down the outside of the cup. This stopped both our sons from buying the Artista.

Terrible – Choice recommended this unit for the quality of the coffee - but missed the noise problem. Sunbeam know this one is a dud - and my customer service experience was woeful. responsibility. Just flick you back to the store you bought it from. Don't touch this - $500 down the sink. Buy the Breville. Looks good and makes reasonably good coffee - at first The noise of this machine is enough to drive you to drink tea. This is just a $500 waste of money and the warranty promise is worth nothing. Sunbeam should hang their heads over this dodgy product.

Good – A good simple and sturdy machine that produces a decent coffee. Any bad coffees seem to be caused by the grind or technique. Get that right and the coffee is sweet. Easy to use and produces good coffee without fault(so far). Good size drip tray and water capacity. It is a little noisy, when the water pump builds up the pressure, but thats not a major issue.

Good – I'd recommend it to amateurs who want a decent coffee in minimal time from a compact machine, and who want some control over the brew. Reasonably priced and easy to maintain. Compact, easy to clean. The machine is ready to operate in about 20 seconds from cold start and coffee is ready in another 30 seconds.I found it very easy to operate and the… Read more ·  1

instruction manual was clearly set out, although overly verbose. The coffee quality-of course it depends on freshness and appropriate grind size of the beans but the level of control over the pour helped me create a very good coffee in less than a minute.Taste compares well with local coffe outlets.Spare instruction manual is on Sunbeam web site.Ogther revieweers have mentioned leaks and rusting; I havnt experienced any of this so far. So far its trouble free.Steamer seemd a bit weak;maybe its my inexperience.
