An Excellent SUV Family Wagon – I Purchased This Car New In January 20. After Looking at Many SUV's and Having owned 2 Land Rover Discovery Diesels in a row it was hard to find a comparative roomy car with a bit of power and versatility. After doing the rounds and driving half a dozen SUV's I just couldn't get comfortable with the Small capacity and getting smaller turbo 4… Read more

Cylinder cars & Pricey ! Honda's 1.5T CRV a prime example so In the end we settled on the AWD Kluger Grande. After 4 months I am really liking this car. The dash is Nice & Easy to read with large White illuminated Dials Sound System is better than my previous cars and The Large console and Dash parcel shelf are both well designed and easy to get at and super Handy. E.G Take away Chinese fits straight in and cant fall over. For a Big Car it Handles really well if a Tad light on the steering. The E10 Fuel compliant 3.5 V6 petrol Engine is freeing up and is averaging 12.4L but with Covit lock down restrictions it hasn't seen much highway work .It has a nice throaty note and is quite punchy The 8 speed auto in my Landrover was good but this is even better. The sports shift is easy to use which I do use mainly to slow down and save the brake life. I also hold it in 2nd or 3rd on steep grades where there it tends to kick up & down if you don't. This might be an annoying problem towing a small caravan or boat . The cabin is extremely Quiet with no road noise. The middle seat is on tracks and adjustable recline positions on the backs as well. The kids love it. This car is bigger inside than it looks and finished much better than I thought originally. I was a bit apprehensive about the car being built in USA but the The Paint work especially leaves most manufactures for dead. The Out Side Mirror Lights come on when you come close to the car at night and just unlock by touchpads on the handles. There's also a rear DVD Unit and lots of interior lights and plug outlets. Air Con is Freezing Cold. Windscreen wipers are terrific ..The best I've experienced on any Car. Even the Wheels are finished beautifully. Mud spats were also Standard as was privacy glass. *The Reverse Camera Isn't as good as the Land Rover and the camera lens gets wet in the rain and it doesn't have a digital Speed Readout on the dash would be my only Gripes. Towing capacity only 2 Ton a bit low for the cars size. I recently ( October) towed a 1ton camper and the car returned 15.4L per 100klms Warranty is 5 years with capped servicing. This was something that annoyed me with Landrover as every time you rang for a service it seemed a guess.. Ring 5 different Dealers you will get 5 different prices and $400 to $800 difference for the same service !Very unprofessional .I wont be buying another one for that reason. This Toyota is a well thought out car and I know its not as tech savvy as some others but it is a very refined motor car. Had the Kluger for 2 years now and 28,000klms travelled .The best fuel return I can get is 12L/p100 normal driving .Tyres have maybe 5,000klms left in them and puncture easy. But no problems what so ever with the car .

Cleaver or not? – Honestly has some of the best ideas I have seen in a SUV. I used this car for a hire car when my car was in the work shop. Thought the car drove rough, it was extremely uncomfortable (sometime a good thing if you do long trips) It was uncomfortable to drive but had the smartest ideas. Air con ducts all the way to 3rd row and this was perfect… Read more

for my children who usually are drenched head to toe of sweat from our car as there is no 3rd row aircon vents.

3rd row had multiple ways to be used. Could be just 1 seat or if you wanted can have all three or just 2. And they where easy to remove.

Not for me – I don’t own a Kluger, I have never purchased one, so I give a perspective of someone who hasn’t purchased one but unfortunately has to drive them when working. We have about thirty if not more of the base models at work. I travel approximately 400km on average when working. The good things are adaptive cruise control and auto braking (great… Read more

safety features) and it feels like a well built solid vehicle. The bad, I hate them. The seats are the worst, I think they were designed in the 70’s, it feels like I am sitting on top of them and not in them, the stupid foot parking brake, the handling is terrible if not tank like and even tiring when travelling through numerous sharp bends, (Although the suspension is alright on straight country roads but no where as good as the Holden Commodores we previously used), the interiors look outdated and old and the petrol is a fuel guzzler. Would I buy one. No! I do my best to avoid driving them at work. I hate them that much. But each to their own.

Great spacious, reliable family car – We purchased our 2016 model Kluger in December 2017 from a used car dealer. The car was in pristine condition mechanically with no exterior damage. Many people recommended Toyota Kluger to us which was probably the deciding factor in purchasing this model. They were not wrong. Firstly, as a mum or two I really love the boot space the Kluger… Read more

provides. I have had sedans previously and always found space an issue. Seating inside the Kluger is spacious and we can sit 5 comfortably in the front and rear seats. Although this model boasts seating for 7 I personally find the additional two fold away seats a waste of time. Getting into them is extremely difficult unless you were a child and safety wise I would never put my children in these seats. Therefore, if you are planning on purchasing a 7 seater, I would consider a larger people mover instead. We however did not purchase the kluger for the additional seating, so my 5 star rating stands. Mechanically the Kluger is very reliable. It costs around $100 to fuel with premium unleaded but I can say that I get excellent mileage from this, despite travelling everywhere from multiple school pick ups to the Gold Coast etc. It is lovely to drive, with light steering and the rear reversing monitor on the dash is extremely helpful, not to mention a necessary safety feature for such a large vehicle. The turning circle is quite manageable, making parking or u-turns easy. Registration, insurance and servicing costs are reasonable also.We will most definitely be purchasing one of these again in the future.

Best Car I ever owned – The 2018 Kluger comes with a front facelift and changes to the backlights. Also a slew of safety features comes standard now. In my GXL AWD version, we get BSM, AEB, Lane departure warning n assisted steering, cross traffic alert, active cruise control on top of VSC, hill descent, hill start etc. For moderate off-road driving, there's snow mode,… Read more

central diff lock. We love the design of the car interior and outside and chose this over the Mazda 9. It drives and handles like a dream and the ride is so comfortable be it on highways, on gravel and farm roads. I enjoyed the active cruise control that uses radar to keep speed n distance. There's plenty of power and the car is very quiet. Spacewise, plenty of legroom, even in the third row, which are quite comfy compared to some other cars.

Consumption in start stop traffic is high -around 14l/100km but that's to be expected for such a big car. On the highway, it's 8-9l/km. If you're looking for a frugal engine, wait for the hybrid version.

Overall, I am truly happy with this car..

Brilliant family SUV – I upgraded from a BMW 320i when I had my second baby and don’t know how I coped with such a small car for so long! The kluger is basic but still stylish and very practical. A lemon car and bad luck – I purchased a brand new Toyota Grade Auto in mid of 2017, now has been one year and 10000km. For the first couple of months, we really enjoy the driving experience, as Grande got a lot of add ons. But after few months, the back window kept popping up when driving or when starting the engine. We had pulled over some times to close the back window… Read more

manually. I demonstrated the problem when doing service at Nunawading Toyota, but mechanic said they checked and found no problem and asked us to go back and monitor until it would get worse. After one month, the back window was not open forever. We booked another appointment at Nunawading Toyota Service. Later that day, they called us to pick up, but the back window couldn’t be fixed until the parts coming from overseas, probably couple of weeks. After approximately 10 days, we made another appointment to fix the back window.

And later on, I found the right passenger door locked itself sometimes for no reason. I brought up this issue when doing service at Nunawading Toyota Service. Again, the reception said they didn’t find anything and asked me go back monitoring until it getting worse. This didn’t worry me too much, as I could central-lock twice to get it open.

May 2018, I found out humming noise came from nowhere when accelerating and only happened when accelerating. I booked a service to check at Nunawding Toyota Service, as usual, they didn’t find anything and told me to monitor. But the humming noise was gone after service. But few days after service, the car started to jump when changing gears. It’s like riding a horse when gear shifting. My wife made another appointment with Nunawading Toyota Service. We didn’t expect it was major problem as we had a faith of “unbreakable “Toyota Brand. Thursday morning 28th of June, my wife called me from Toyota Service and told me they wouldn’t accept the car unless she could demonstrate the issue. It was so frustrating experience! And then my wife passed the phone to me. After explanation, they finally got a mechanic to accompany my wife for testing drive. My wife told me later that she was so nervous as she was so worried what would happen if the issue didn’t show up at that particular moment—they would turn her around and “KEEP MONITORING”?!It was lucky, the car jumped again—OOHOO! Mechanic said it could be a major issue and probably need to change transmission.

Friday afternoon, mechanic called me saying they wasn’t sure whether they could fix, and probably need to rebuild the transmission. They needed to do more testing and would keep me updated Saturday. NO Call and No updates on Saturday.

We are not trouble maker and I think we are very patient customers. I purchased Toyota Vans and UTEs for my work, so far no problems. But I don’t know what happened to this family SUV? It’s Grande-not cheap model! We paid to drive, not sitting at workshop for testing or making one appointment after another!

What Lemon Car! What an Unbreakable Toyota!

OK, Could be better – Front wheel drive with power, not good, hang on tight accelerating on rough road. Speed o out by 7km. Radio loses stations when battery disconnected. I would prefer the ride a bit softer, gets annoying on bad roads and we have plenty. Head rests are terrible, bent forward, hitting the back of your head on bad roads. Great car - Very Overpriced! Lost 45k in value in 3 years! – Purchased a 2014 Kluger Grande in late August 2014. I cant complain about the car too much. I didnt have any major issues (break downs etc) everything worked with the exception of quite a few minor issues that were all fixed under warranty. It's just annoying when you have to keep taking the car back to the dealer to fix things. Especially… Read more

when you are paying 78k for "the most reliable car brand"

Issues i had:

Automatic boot struts replaced 3 times - under warranty - Needed replacing again when traded in.

Front radar - replaced once

Blind spot monitoring - Replaced once (tried to charge me $1k to replace - dodgy service dept)

Handles to control the rear seats broke off 3 times

Constant need to have the wheels aligned

extremely thirsty

Front wheel drive with so much power is just dangerous

Chews through tires (expensive)

Servicing is EXPENSIVE! (over $1k)

Front headlight leaked water - This was difficult to claim with Toyota who said it was caused by me.

After a few weeks of fighting with them, they finally changed it.

Electric seats stopped working at around the 70,000km mark.

At about the 80,000 km mark, the engine would pause mid-acceleration on cold mornings.

Toyota refused to accept this was an issue even though they were aware of it!

The value my Kluger lost in 3 years ($45k), I could have purchased another car with!

Which is exactly what i did.

I just purchased a Kia Sorento and it has everything my Kluger had and its 20k cheaper

With a 7 year warranty Unlimited kms.

If Toyota were confident in their cars they would offer the same warranty as Kia.

Its like Toyota is just riding the "quality" wave set by them so many years ago. I think it's time to move over Toyota, lift your game otherwise the others will overtake you without much resistance.

In the end:

The Toyota Kluger is a great car but i wont be making the mistake of paying so much for features that can be acheived for much less with other brands.

It feels solid and big and heavy.

However when you compare it to the rivals such as the Kia Sorento, you will quickly realise just how overpriced the Kluger is.

I dont see $70k+ in value, when other brands offer the same features, same quality and a warranty that lasts more than twice as long.

If you are looking at purchasing a Kluger, i would highly recommend you think twice before overpaying for featured you can have from other brands at a fraction of the price.

Would i recommend this car?

If the car was 20k cheaper and had a fair warranty, then yes i would.

However at this stage i would not tell anyone to purchase a Toyota Kluger as there are plenty of better options available that wont hurt your pocket as much.

I sense the slow demise of Toyota if they don't get their act together real quick!

2017 Toyota Kluger GX AWD - GSU55R – Rather then telling you our entire story, I'll stick to what you want to know. 2017 Toyota Kluger GX AWD - 3.5 liter V6 - 8 speed automatic. Engine: Absolute cracker. No electronic throttle lag as you find in alot of cars, very peppy and spirited. Will put a smile on your face, it's very effortless..... and loves to rev. Technically, it's… Read more ·  1

engine is very advanced and very nicely designed. You can looking the engine model to find out more about it specifically if your a car guy and knows about engines etc.

8 Speed Automatic: It's very nice, there's a few options in cabin sport mode (limits it to 4 gears?) it has a power mode that apparently makes the throttle respond faster also keeps it in higher gears ...... the transmission does like to upshift to the high gears save fuel and it can be annoying sometimes as you can find yourself on a slight incline, the engine will be in a higher gear and require too much throttle to shift down thus providing you more power then you needed to correct it's bogging down behavior. It can get annoying but you soon learn to work with it and how to get it to do what you need. It has many options to get you buy. The transmission from what I can tell does not have a separate transmission cooler. It shifts nicely, fast? It does the job well.

All Wheel Drive System: The all wheel drive is a bit of a gimic to be honest but I most certainly would not recommend anyone buy the 2WD model. I drove both and generally hate FWD's to be honest. The FWD chirped the wheels part throttle all the time, it's a completely pointless idea for this sized engine.

Now the AWD frankly is mostly a FWD but with Toyota deciding what amount of power goes to the rear wheels. You'll find it's basically about 80% FWD and 20% RWD for the most part and seems to switch to just FWD for highway runs from what I noticed. It can induce torque steer under a quick jab of the throttle BUT.......... toyota's system is quite smart and it diverts more power where required. You also have a diff lock which will distribute the power evenly if required to 40km's an hour which helps if you need to ensure you get max power for take off or doing offroad driving. The last two gears seem to be just for highway. It sits very slow RPM wise all the time in town or on the highway, it's very good reminds me of my old cammed VE SS V8. It sits under 1500rpm on the highway at 100km/h.

I have nailed the throttle in wet conditions to see how it would respond, it's very safe. In the rain I copped a bit of front wheel spin but the torque instantly got transferred and it was on it's way.

To be honest if you dislike their AWD system it's also what gives you the good fuel economy so it's a good trade off Toyota has made. Again you can also adjust the AWD system somewhat asking it to send more power to the rear wheels..... to a degree. Overall it's a decent system.

Fuel Economy: Not much to tell. We do 60% highway, 40% city (100km/s a day 5-6 days a week). Three weeks running it used 11.3 litres per 100. It only has a 70-72 litre fuel tank? A bigger tank would have been good but the economy is that of a small V6. I uses the same as our 3.0 V6 SIDI Holden Commodore. Not bad for 300-400KG heavier car.

Driving Dynamics: It drives very nice, your high up, the steering is SUPER light..... a little too tight, and you'll find that it's easy for it to feel frigidity on the road. That said it makes it ALOT easier to drive. Confident progressive brakes - can be a bit touchy until you get used to them. You can get a super small amount of torque steer even in the AWD model.... If you go over certain raised roads at too fast a speed etc, the dips and inclines can upset the computers a touch and you can find it's momentarily upset. But generally it drives very nice. You never feel your short of power, just sometimes a step away from it.

Cabin: Three rows, all have good head, knee, leg room (second row slides to offer 3rd row more knee room). Three rows have airbags. Three rows have roof aircon vents, there's also floor vents under the front seats for the 2nd row passengers (our kids love that). The 2nd row has it's own aircon controls which also controls the 3rd row.

It's SUPER quiet in the Kluger in the cabin on the road, it's very peaceful...... and matched with the light steering it's a pleasure to drive.

There is plenty of space in this car. Only one car had better 3rd row seat height from the floor and that was the Holden Captiva but the 3rd row in this Kluger is very wide seat wise in that 3rd row.

There's enough room in the boot with all 7 seats up for approx 6-7 shopping bags (square cooling bags).

There could be more USB ports...... but there is one up front with a 12v lighter socket and another lighter socket in the 2nd row so you can put in a double usb car charger for the kids, none in the 3rd row.

Infotainment / Sound System: The sound system is in the car is decent, the infotainment unit itself is very basic, backwards even in terms of using it. But it will get you buy if you just need radio, bluetooth phone connectivity. Again the audio is good, sound system wise stock standard.

I personally removed the infotainment unit in the first two weeks and upgraded to a custom 10.1" Android headunit with apple CarPlay. Another $1000 ontop of your purchase price but really it's the only difference between the Kluger and alot of other cars. And it works a treat for us. Something Toyota could have done themselves. I really wanted Google Maps etc.

Other Notes: The second row slides on runners, our 3 year old daughter actually cut her foot on the runner because it was missing a plastic cover on our car...... (used car with under 50k on it so)

It has a foot brake not a hand brake in our model. It's OK tho, it's well out of the way when driving and has a normal foot rest not a flat one like the SanteFe's etc.

High beam and the fog lights are very bright and the normal lights with the DRL's look nice, very mean looking car and an engine to match.

Has good ground clearance. We considered the side steps as the cars a little high up getting out, but they would stick out and decided against it. We also decided against the tow bar, it's a big car..... with all the seats down. It'd be cheaper to hire a small truck each time.

It has big mirrors but we did add blind spot mirrors..... (good thing to do to any car).

Things we don't like: No digital speedo, no self locking doors when put in gear, the power windows do not work when the cars off for a period of time or when it's just unlocked etc.

It doesn't have a gas lift bonnet? ....... It has quite a few beeps to the cabin which can be annoying, if your doors open and you just put the key in the ignition it beeps (annoying if your fitting a headunit etc).

Summary: It has space, its got a decent AWD system, decent gearbox, it's damn good on fuel in our opinion for it's weight. We choose this over a Holden Captiva Diesel($10k less) and a Holden Acadia ($10k more).

If Holden even fix their body roll in the Acadia it would be the only competition to this car. The Klugers a very peaceful lovely place to be.

Beautiful car – I bought this card in March 2018 and it drives like a treat, it doesn't sit ridiculously high like some SUVs so my wife can easily move our baby in and out of the back seat. It has grunt when needed but if you're happy to drive gently the economy is very good (around 10L/100km on avg).  Show details

curbs on school run due to ground clearance, and we do the odd long distance driving. suberb highway cruiser. un real overtaking road trains. ive had a clubsport r8 previously so i know wot im talking about. the rolling 80km- 120km to overtake safely is unreal with this car.super quite .lots of room. even third row is excellent for kids and small adults. And can fold in two so flexibiltiy is great if u hav 6 in the car and need space for pram and shopping. even has cup holder and aircon vents there. really do like the open storage space under the dash. very handy with 3 kids in car.done 30,0000KM. averaging 10-11l per 100km on regular unleaded.(real world driving) including giving it a bit of stick every now and then.managed to get to kattanning from baldivis on one full tank regular unleaded.(550KM). also very easy to park with camera and sensors standard. capped price servicing is cheap $180 every 6 months for 3yrs. i also have a pajero diesel 2012. cannot compare the two with driveabilty and comfort space aswell.. only better because the pajero can go off road. ive looked at two year old 2015 kluger online. still holding its value. the only negative is i prefer cupholders on the dash area similar to t31 xtrail and stereo. my pajero has a rockford fosgate speaker system with subwoofer stock.but thats being really picky, but the bluetooth audio and 6 speaker system is fine. reliabilty wise no problems so far. nothing broken yet. quality seems excellent. and remember i have 3 kids who play with all the buttons in the car. but have been told to service on time regardless of kms by toyota ,the motors can sludge. i do like to change my cars often due to boredom but looks like this will be in the garage for a couple more years at least. these positive comments ive given is related to the price of the vehicle and value for money that suits my needs. family of 5 with 3 kids under 10.if u need a 7 seater and dont want a odyssey or tarago.get the kluger. yes fuel consumption i a liitle bit higher. but if u d a bit of long distance driving like us. u wont regret it it!!! yes there are better euro cars but are twice the price. if money isnt a problem buy new a range rover.

Big size family car – Very good car, from the day we got this we haven't had any issues and never felt like of chose the wrong one. Adjustable seats is very comfortable specially when you travel for long distance. Rear seats are not so bad compare with others in the market around same pricing. Only bit of trouble we always have is parking when we go to shopping centre with narrow parking spaces.  Show details

Affordable family car – I had Holden commodore before, compared with Klugar. I think Klugar steeling wheel is more easy to maneuver, better visuability, more seats (also the third row is hardly can fitted in anyone), good for long distance drive. I had base model of Klugar which similar price with Holden and less features. Sound effects, temperature control and fuel is a big concern.  Show details

Good car – My 2012 7 Seat 2WD model Kluger is very nice. It has a lot of legroom, is very comfortable and the interior is nice. The car is not noisy at all but isn't very fuel efficent (around 12L/100km) but driving on a motorway or highway is pretty good because uses around 8L/100km.  Show details

Best car I have owned because it is my first NEW car! – Great family mover that is spacious enough and extremely comfortable! It does use abit more fuel that I hoped averaging about 12-13L per 100km for city driving, highway driving is great at 9L per 100km. So far the only issue I had was a flat battery after 13 months which when I took it to Toyota they just told me it needed a charge, it then went flat twice and they only cover 50% after a year so I took it elsewhere to have it changed!  Show details

Oh what a feeling – After having 2 Nissan x trails over the past 10 years, I thought time to get something with a bit of power and I wanted a 7 seater. Originally I was holding out for the new Mazda CX-9 but after I found out the pricing I couldn't justify spending $10k more on it. This car is an absolute pleasure to drive it runs so smoothly, and it has balls when… Read more

you need it. The seats are comfortable and there is plenty of room. Even with all seats up you still have a but if room in the back to put groceries. At first it took a while to get use to the visibility in the rear, I think that's because the xtrail back window was low, it is a big car and it did take me a while to get use to reverse parking it. The one thing is that beeping sensor when reversing has stopped which is annoying as I did end up relying on this a bit, so have to take it back to Toyota. Also, I wish I did get was front sensors, I unfortunately have done a scrape due to error in judgement ahhh!! Also my little gripe is the cup holders they are so big that when I have my coffee in it and go around the corner it spills. The xtrail had the best cup holders which I do miss, besides that a great all round car. I got the car in white and asked for extra dark tinting it looks awesome. Running costs aren't too bad for a V6 car, we go through one full tank a week. And that's us driving it each day, We purchased from Castle Hill Toyota and were happy with the service, no hard sell, even when it came to the extras.

Always been our dream car! Has lived up to our expectation – When we purchased the Kluger 2WD we knew that we didn't go wrong with our choice in the first place, to be honest even if its a big machine it is the easiest car that I have driven so far. Driving experience wise, it felt so light, quiet and secured. The interior looks classy and the accessories are pretty straightforward. Petrol wise, its… Read more

more economical compared to other 7 seaters in the market since its a 2WD and we couldn't feel any much difference since our previous car was a sedan V6 and the fuel cost is more or less the same.
