I’ve just put my 13 yo stubborn Cavalier x Pug on these. She starts howling when I’m away - her partner in crime passed away 3 months ago. I’m giving her the recommended daily dosage and wondering how long does it generally take before I notice any changes in her anxiety levels? I’m using a monitoring app to hear what’s she’s doing while away.

I gave these to my dog. He’s a Staffy x Labrador and is 5years old. He’s terrified of storms, so we gave him 3 as per what it said on the bag. It helped but since we only want to use it during storms we haven’t given him anymore yet. My question is…..when dogs stop having it can it make them more anxious than normal? He’s been pacing, barking, panting and shaking since the next morning after he had this. Definitely not his normal behaviour

Heya, I definitely don't think they cause problems afterwards. Could it be he's still anxious from the storm? Or some other thing? I have a little mini foxy x pom, who is crazy anxious about storms. The thunder shirt I bought him did nothing for him. These and a supplement with hemp oil from vetologica, both given together, are the best treatment I've found, plus training them with the treats as the storm approaches. I have an Alice Springs Special (dog from a desert community via the shelter in Alice) who is twice the weight of my mini foxy but the same amount of treats give the same effect for her, so I think the effective dose may be quite dog-specific.)

My mini foxy lets me know there's thunder long before I can hear it, so I get out all the treats for them both, and cut each bikkie into quarters, with them watching eagerly. Then I start training them, with great excitement and lots of praise and cuddles and a quarter of a treat each time they do as I ask. I take it in turns, so the entire process can take a while, deliberately. They get the chance to be focussed on the training and treats in the presence of the stressor, which gives their subconscious a chance to work out they actually are safe, even with thunder. It also kinda wears them out mentally, in a rewarding way, which relaxes them. Lots of feelgood brain chemistry! And by the time we've done this the kibble is starting to take effect. I did this the past 2 storms seasons here in Darwin. At the height of the storm season we'll have thunder and a storm around a couple of times a day, every day, poor dogs! It got to the point where when they heard thunder they'd come to me telling me it was time for this whole ritual :-D And they are definitely calmer. Not calm but hey my little boy kept his tummy fur all storm season this time. Huzzah! S worth doing.

The training is specifically things they're good at so they're getting the fun of the praise. A bit of challenging stuff but mostly good. And if they're too anxious to do much, I go back to the basics, like sitting and waiting etc. When they're anxious even doing these is a challenge, and duly awarded, lots of praise! It's not the time to teach a new trick, lol!

I think cutting the kibble might help them digest them quicker too as the storm approaches.

Overall though, the best treatment for anxiety is consistent mental challenges that are not too easy and definitely not too hard. Setting them up to succeed, 10 mins a few times a day. Using their brain and persistently working on the things they find hard, mixed with the things they find easy so they get that mental satisfaction. It's also building that trust in me that I know what I'm doing and I'm in charge of the situation, so they don't have to try to fix it themselves. And walking! I find a walk that's more a sniffari than physically demanding, each day works with these dogs, but a previoius dog, also super stressy, responded to a really physically exhausting walk a few times a week. (Thankfully she had short legs!) It is all basically building up their tolerance for challenging situations or puzzles and focussing always on making them feel really good about achieving, and no negative messages when they don't get something. I just go back to what they can do. And try to work out how to break down the trick into smaller, more doable bites for them. And absolutely the most important, is building their trust in you!

It's also worth looking at the purpose for the breeds in your dog, and seeing what you can try re tricks or kinds of exercise they might find satisfying. My mini foxy kills soft toys, as he's a ratter. My happy go lucky Alice Special loves investigating things, scenting the air, scampering round, while my mini foxy stays close to me ready to chew to bits any threat to me or the other dog, as he's super protective. (We have an agreement, he might let me know there's 'danger', but I'm the one in charge of security, not him!)

All of that said, my cat ended up on Royal Canin Calm, and I can't get over how much happier she is, and what good conditions she is in physically now. So I may just try instead of calming treats, put the dogs on the dog version of Royal Canin Calm instead. Depends on how severe this storm season is I spose. It's good to have options! Especially as they grow and age. But the cornerstone of a less anxious dog for any problem, is the training, their relationship with you, and getting the things that fill their soul with happiness, like hey, killing soft toys just as if they're a rat!

You might have to try a few things before finding what works. Balanced Canine has an anxiety supplement that may or may not work it uses herbs. Their called doggie boosters. Supposedly hard to find without the name.

Checking online shops after searching for calm/calming to see if there’s anything you can try there.

There are calming foods too, but they are hit and miss.

There’s also a milk protein called Zylkene that may work.

You won’t know what works without trying a few things. Try each thing for the minimum time stated on the bottle. Don’t mix them, some don’t mix well together and your dog could get really sick.

For some dogs hemp or CBD oil works as well.

Depends on the dog and its issues. One of mine had only mild anxiety and I saw improvement in 2 weeks and I have been able to wean her off with training as well as using the tranquil, my older girl was attacked and it took about a month of working out the correct dose which was 4 a day but then I got her down to 3 a day but she was on it for life with no side effects and it helped her live a normal life.

Every dog is different, it may or may not help, there is no 1 answer. The only thing you can do is buy it and try it and hope for the best.

Hi I have been using this product on and off with my dog For about 2 months he is 11 months old I am finding the morning after using at night he is vomiting and although not sure it is this product was wondering if anyone else had had this side effect. I agree the sedating effect is good but am not willing to put my dog through the side effects if it is this

my question would be how big is your dog ? my old girl is a basenji of about 8kg, so only give her 1/2 stick. initially she ate it no trouble, but being a bit finicky, decided she no longer liked it. As she is old and needs the vitamins i now chop it quite finely and mix it in with her wet food. But she has quite a broad variety of foods, and eats well, and is not a vomity dog. Just thinking that the little stick of the Tranquil Treat might be too big, so indigestable. My girl is old now so can no longer digest the raw chicken bones and will regurgitate them. i hope this might help :)

He is 10kg and he eats dog biscuits the same size no trouble and chews them. he goes nuts when he sees the bottle so he likes them and I suppose it may just be a sensitive stomache I am just trying to isolate cause to help him.. I may need to have him allergy tested I will ask my vet if we get another bout of it thanks

My husband gave our shitz two treats he weighs just 10ks is going to cause him any harm ,should we contact the vet . He is very restful ATM

Look on the bottle, it will tell you how much to give but my vet told me it won't hurt them as it is all natural. My girl used to get 4 a day, one in her breskfast, one at lunch she ate it off my hand and 2 in her dinner and they kept her calm. Two won't hurt your dogs but because they are small I wouldn't give them together spread it out. My girl was a medium sized dog

My dog is totally unable to be helped during a storm or even a rainy day. He shakes pants, and tries to hide anywhere , he would destroy anything just to be safe. He even has got under my bed that is only 4 inches from the floor. I have had to get a crowbar to get him out from under the bed. Will these tranquill products help him and how??? thank you I am desperate.

All I can tell you, is that, unfortunately, this product did not work to calm down my dog during storms.

Hello, i just bought this formula to help my dog relax in outings or walks or when we go to training classes. My question is should i administer it only when doing any of the above activities or should it be daily like a treatment plan or course?

Vic
Vic

I use it daily as a calmative as my dog was attacked and although not hurt bad she was traumatised so now she has one 3 times a day. I find it extremely helpful in keeping the seratonin levels in the brain down where a dog can learn, once it goes too high a dog is incapable of learning or taking in what we are asking it to do. (Behaviour specialist told me). I took her to training and she is a competition dog and she can remain calm and listen to me. I tried taking her off but she became worse in her behaviour so she stays on her daily of 3 and is happy. They are natural and won't hurt as told to me by my vet.

My 5 year old Maltese/Shiitzu has started urinating in the house at night when shut away from me as I’ve got a broken leg and don’t want him jumping on it. Is this product beneficial for this behaviour?

K P

To me he has separation anxiety. The label says it will help with this. I have heard of other things available. I have heard vets have collars for this. So recomend a visit to your vet. Also what may work on my dog may not work on yours.

Best of luck. Hope your leg gets better soon

Lets know how you go

I suggest you speak to your Vet and/or contact the manufacturing company. I am no longer using this product as I found that with much love, intensive socialisation including exposure to loud and varied noises, my Basset no longer requires medication

My little terrier has gotten better with an adaptil collar, very expensive but worth it because she is calmer. also, a very good diet and a routine with 2 walks a day has helped very much.
