I used Solargard to spraypaint my shed using a Wagner 250M spraygun. I bought 15L of Solargard Monument colour from the local Bunnings. I mixed it with a large commercial mixer attached to a power drill and noticed large amounts of skin on the mixer when I raised it - so I extended the mixing time for a few minutes hoping it was just settled pain… Read more

in the bottom of the large drum. I then removed the "skin" when I removed the mixer. When i then started the spraygun its nozzle blocked evry 20-30secs - fortunately the Wagner has a quick clear mechanism. There is also a pickup screen, and a fine filter in the gun so the paint must have lots of very small "skin" particles. I persisted and actually bought a second drum which also had the same issue. Wattyl Solargard said its rare (of course) but would not offer any partial refund or credit (total cost for paint was $540). Quality is obviously poor - I've never struck skin in the bottom of new paint before.

I'll never use Solargard again - its back to the Dulux brands.

Avoid the problem.

Wattyl Solagard is a tough, lasting, good-looking paint – I used Wattyl Solagard to paint a shed door 9 years ago, wood window frames 8 years ago, barge boards 6 years ago and a pergola today. Because of the extreme ultra violet none of the previous brands lasted more than 5 years max. I said to the man in Mitre10 I'm prepared to pay more for a paint that will last. He pointed straight at the Wattyls.… Read more

Looks like he was right. It wasn't expensive either, compared with the rest. The Wattyl paintwork is still looking good at an age when all previous brands had degraded. Like all paints, you should read the instructions. Do a small test area on top of other paints before you charge into it.

Wattyl solagard – I bought the wattyl Solagard samples today from Bunnings. 2 colours/ tins (Colorbond steel Dune and colorbond steel monument) . They are nothing like the colour chart or the colour indicated on the tins. Frustrating and waste of time and money. Show details

Excellent Exterior Paint been using for 30 years – I have to laugh at the poor reviews and I have no idea why anyone would paint an already painted roof tile or gal with Solarguard but knock yourself out this paint is not for roofs in my opinion. Also don’t undercoat before using this paint your wasting your money and you should remove old paint from the surface if it is unsound. I just recoated a… Read more

house Jan 2022 I previously painted in 1997 with Solarguard as it has chalked and with a good cleaning I painted over it and after one year it’s perfect. Don’t listen to the home handyman one star ratings they have no idea on the correct method of applying on certain surfaces. I would only use this on walls, weathered gutters over 6 weeks old, fences and garage doors that’s it. Also purchase a roof coating to coat your roof not a paint for gods sake you amateurs.

Repainting after 6 years due to colour fade – Built a new home with some cement sheet cladding, and painted them with Wattyl Solagard low sheen, 2 coats. The off-white "surfmist" paint on the fascia (900mm high) lasted well, no noticeable colour fade, just needed a clean, but I gave it a quick coat anyway, as I had already bought the paint. The house walls which I had painted mid grey… Read more

"Wallaby", was a different matter. Directly under the eaves (very little direct sun) it was near new looking, but as you looked further down, it faded, and started looking an off-purple colour, not nice at all! Anyway, I'm using the same colour paint again (fresh) and am hoping that the now darker base on the walls will make them look better longer. Other than the obvious solar fading with the grey, it is good paint.

Best exterior paint bar none – Easily the best, longest lasting exterior paint in the country. Been painting pro for over 40 years. A bit more expensive then Dulux Weathershield but totally worth it. Unlike Weathershield does not fade, chalk or blister provided youve done all the right prep. Show details

Solagard covered in black mildew after 2.5 years – I built a shed using marine ply weatherboards. I sanded, undercoated and then topcoated with two coats of solagard low sheen on each and every weatherboard beforehand. I then put a third coat on the finished shed. Within two and a half years most of the shed is covered in black mildew. I don’t have a mildew problem anywhere else, including my… Read more

house which has paint at least 7 years old. Contacted Wattle technical support. Was told it’s been wet weather and said I’ll have to kill the mildew with bleach before repainting! No offer of replacement paint. Won’t be buying Wattle products again.

Australian made for Australian conditions – Solaguard is our go to range for all our exterior heritage homes around Melbourne. We have been in the industry for 18 years and have not had any issues with this product. If applied properly and preparation is done correctly it lasts a life time. We have tried all the other big brand names and monitored how it holds up after a few years,… Read more

Solaguard out does them all. It holds its colour and does not fade, it’s durable and will not go Chaulky if the surface it prepared properly.

Solagard Roof Paint – Had my roof professionally painted with Solar but within 2 years it was chalking and loosing colour. I contacted Wattyl but they claimed that the roof paint is not guaranteed against chalking only blistering and peeling. Hugely disappointed as I have owned and painted my own homes for the last 30 years and always have had my roofs professionally painted. First time that I have ever seen this. I Don't recommend Solagard Roof Paint. Show details

One of the best! – Trade painter for 20 years. Wattyl solagard is one of the best products. Lasts a very long time and application Is easy. Living in the desert with 45 degree plus weather in summer and very cold in winter, wattyl still lasts 15 years on weatherboard homes if done correctly... All the negative comments on this product are from people that have no idea about painting in general. Can never realy go wrong with wattyl.  Show details

Terrible Paint to Use and Never Dries to Hard Finish – I have used Solagard for the first time this year on a Weatherboard Cottage. Colorbond Finish for some of the trimmings which are timber and metal. I have found that, even after many months, the paint remains tacky to the touch. And if you need to patch it or sand it it is really terrible in that it clogs the sandpaper even when using the correct… Read more

aluminium oxide papers designed for sanding paint. I cannot recommend this at all as frankly its impossible to apply ("dries" so quickly on brush) and as I say never seems to develop a hard finish. I put a piece of painted trim into my woodworkers vice today to do some work on it and even though this piece had been painted around THREE months ago what happened? Pieces of the Solargard came off onto the vice jaws (dry timber). Timber and metal substrates had been correctly prepared using quality Dulux paints. My first and last time with Wattyl. DO NOT USE.

Solar Guard Protects like no other – I’ve used solar guard on my Queenslander Since 2004. Always apply two (2) coats each time for my external weatherboard. Lasts around 7-10yrs but I prefer to repaint before it really needs it. Wash the house down every 3-5yrs as dirt is what will degrade any paint. Unbelievable durability on timber posts, balustrade and weatherboard. Repainting now… Read more

during vivid-19 for only the 4th time since 2004. Solar guard brushes on well and is super flexible. I use the gloss option every-time, I feel it’s more user friendly to apply, looks better and repels dirt better than low sheen option for example.

Middle of the road paint – Goes on reasonably well. I had very few issues with it running but it did take a hell of a long time to dry for some reason and marks a little more easily than I would like. Show details

Deborah Ufer – I have painted my decks many times as I live in North Queensland and have to do it every 6 months due to our extreme weather. I used this decking oil on Saturday morning and I noticed on Monday afternoon that it is fading already. I won't be using this product again. I have used the regular Wattyl Decking Oil with no problems. Show details

BLISTERS AND PEELS – Following a full roof prep and two coats of Wattyl Solagard the previously painted roof surface showed extensive blistering. I complained to Wattyl and they sent out a rep to examine the roof He claimed "the old paint has been affected by the new coatings" So according to the information on the pail under warranty it failed. He replied "no there's… Read more

no failure it has reacted with the old surface paint" The paint failed outright and Wattyl relinquished all responsibility. I am considering legal action mainly from the viewpoint that the warranty should not be printed on the paint pails if it is worthless and highly conditional. It clearly states two coats over old paint surfaces will give a 10 year warranty. Clearly this is not the case. All I can say is DO NOT PURCHASE WATTYL There are far cheaper and superior paints out there

Excellent, durable and suitable for extreme climates – We have used on woodwork, metal trim, brick and fences in houses in ACT and South Coast over a period of nearly 30 years. It stands up well to all conditions. We usually repaint after 10 years but it is still in great condition. Our current house is close to ocean and subject to strong salt-laden winds. Even though it is often hard to find a supplier locally we wouldn't use anything else.  Show details

Long Lasting – I've been using it for 35 years as the property has gradually been added to - pergola, garage etc. and the main house is only now requiring a repaint for the first time. Can be a bit thick to apply and will stay soft for a while but what an incredible trade-off, very happy with the durability and long life it's given me on wood, metal, brick and… Read more

Definitely using it again for what will be the last repaint.

Ignore the listed date purchased, the choices given didn't go anywhere back far enough as the paint did.

DO NOT USE - ALL MONEY JUST SPENT ON ADS NOT PRODUCT – WARNING DO NOT USE THIS I live in central nsw and renovated my house. I had old timber cladding so sanded all, I used Zinsser for for undercoat and primer ( brilliant - have used it many times and never any problems) Solargard failed within 18 months ( supposed to last 10 years) - the first time. After contacting Wattyl, they came, they… Read more

took samples and blamed everything but the paint itself. They gave me more Solargard and said to use it as primer and all would be good. They would not honour guarantee, and would not supply painters to repaint even though they admitted the Solargard was the problem. I repainted some of the house and 10 months later - Guess what? Even worse.

I was told by painters that Wattyl spend ALL THE MONEY ON ADS - NOT THE RUBBISH PRODUCT.

Dulux at least have a place where paint is tested and DO NOT USE an old formula WHICH DOES NOT WORK.

Easy to apply with excellent coverage – Used solagard to paint the exterior brickwork on our house. Had two colours of bricks and in the first coat it covered it completely, you could not tell the difference in brick colours. Applied two coats and it turned out excellent. Paint went on well and felt very thick with excellent coverage. Used a 36cm roller with 28mm nap as the bricks were textured.  Show details
