Land Rover Discovery 2 (1999-2004)

very enjoyable, albeit a few hiccups – purchased as a demo mid 2000 with 2000km. TD% 7seat with ACE and rear a/c, locking centre diff. haven't wanted to change it as yet because it is so nice to drive, could not see any advantage in getting a d3 or d4. currently 190K km. few problems: head gasket(difficult to diagnose), oil pump fell off and blew up turbo, fuel pump suddenly ceased to work. regular services that are not too expensive. sad to see it go Show details
It you love it, it loves you back – We bought this car for off-reading adventures. Very good and comfortable for this. Great at pulling a trailer too. Slower on the quick uptake because it’s so heavy. Not good if you’re looking for a zippy 4wd but awesome for big trips. Pretty average on fuel depending. We have the diesel automatic. Show details
Last real tough luxury off-road landy – This vehicle is more on the lines of the original Range Rover. You can drive this to hell and back and it stands by you like a good old friend. Performance and handling is excellent. Seat comfort is the best and than other makes probably due to BMW influence. Reliability is average as things do wear but you can easily maintain this vehicle… Read more
because there is an abundance of information and cheap parts you can order from UK. The markup on parts from dealers in Australia is daylight robbery.
Best 4wd ive owned – Purchased my 99 disco auto a few years ago. Couldnt be happier with it. Tows my boat with ease. 200k on the clock. Had 3 amigo lights when i purchased the vehicle, replaced the abs shuttle valve for under $100 and all good. Fuel economy is amazing for a 4wd that weighs over 2 tonne, i get 9.5 litres. Have owned a 96 Prado previously, and an 01… Read more
navara. They dont compare to the disco. Looking at getting an ecu remap soon for some more get up and go.
The 3 Amigos – It is so disappointing that Land Rover did not recall this model over the ABS brakes system . The Wabco (Germany) ABS has exhibited a fault by illuminating three lights on the dash with regular monotony. It appears that owners all over the world are annoyed by this ABS failure., My vehicle has 108,000 klms now and I have endured this for about… Read more
38,000 klm to now. In desperation I removed the ABS modulator last week and posted it to an ABS repairer in Shawnee (USA) for a positive repair. I regard the failure of Land Rover to recall and repair the ABS as negligent.

Land Rover Service – I purchased a Land Rover Disco 2 TD5 new from Lance Dixon, Ferntree Gully in October 2004. I always took my vehicle to Lance Dixon Doncaster for repairs and service. But no more. 0n or around 13 March 2013 Lance Dixon replaced the fuel pump in the vehicle, which involved removing and replacing the fuel tank. Following this work, the fuel… Read more
gauge was not seated correctly (showing incorrect fuel levels) and the fuel tank was removed and the gauge reseated. In June 2016 fuel started leaking from above the fuel tank when the motor was running. The fuel tank was removed to find damaged fuel lines because they had not been correctly sited when the fuel tank was replaced in 2013.
On or around 26 September 2013 Lance Dixon replaced the battery in my vehicle. Following this work I was unable to turn the motor off, the cruise control kept disengaging, and the electric trailer brakes were not working. I had to return the vehicle to have these matters rectified, but paid for a new electric brake console myself.
On or around 16 September 2014 Lance Dixon completed a service and failed to notify me, or carry out mechanical work on a water leak. At this same service I had asked that a light in the dashboard be replaced, but I was informed they were unable to obtain a globe.
I think you will agree that the events described above are unacceptable. I had been taking the vehicle to Lance Dixon believing I would receive an excellent standard of service, but I have been grossly let down and incurred considerable financial costs.
I did send a letter to Land Rover Australia, and they, expressed disappointment, how they expect their dealers to ensure the highest standard of repair, discussed my issues with Lance Dixon, apologized, and stated "Your time to detail your poor experience is most valuable to us in implementing the right processes and coaching to ensure customer focus is always in place. We can assure you that your customer feedback is of the utmost importance to us and your opinions have most certainly been passed on to our retailer."
On all levels this is so unsatisfactory. It is so bad, and I am pleased to use my experience to warn others of unsatisfactory service.
Good value, reliable if serviced properly – I picked up a bargain one-owner 1999 TD5 manual in 2009, with 230000km on the clock but a complete service/recall history. I got a base-model one, because air suspension and ACE just seemed like more to go wrong (and those models were way more expensive back then). It drove like new on the test drive, and that is how it's turned out to be. Now… Read more
over 300000 km of pretty hard use with no major problems other than normal wear-and-tear consistent with age (coolant hose replacement a year ago, a new bearing/seal kit in the turbo, new front prop shaft uni-bearings, new rear shockers). This vehicle gets a lot of off-road use, and that is where it shines - it really is terrific off-road, belying its excellent on-road manners. Live axles rule! Also a very comfortable and quiet cruiser on-road, serene with great economy (overall average ~8.5-9l/100km). The TD5 motor remains one of the sweetest diesel engines I've ever experienced - for me it's the highlight of these vehicles. And its safety is ahead of its time - check out its real-world crash rating online.
The only unexpected problems were : (1) was a biggie - breaking a front drive-shaft in a difficult off-roading situation, while revving the engine hard in 1st gear low range attempting to ascend a difficult slope. This vehicle is fitted with an aftermarket Davis Motors centre-diff lock link that automatically engages the CDL when low range is selected. Although locking the centre diff does significantly improve the off-road ability, it appears that the Traction control system can get confused in some situations, and having the centre diff locked can result in stress peaks within the drivetrain if the TC wheel braking gets out of synch. (maybe that's why they removed the CDL actuator and then the lock itself until the D2A software upgrade?). Anyway, once aware of the problem, its an easy work-around, (use moderate revs in 1st LR and/or install a TC disable switch for the locked centre diff - this can also help sand driving) and I've had no further problems. (2) was really irritating: the rear door lock tab is prone to obstruction when the back of the car is filled with gear. On a steep climb the rear door got trapped in the locked position when a heavy rucksack shifted onto the lock-tab. The electronic lock-actuator couldn't unlock the door, and then burnt out, leaving all our gear trapped behind a cargo-barrier. Infuriating. When I replaced the rear door lock mechanism ($60 for a new one off ebay), I pop-riveted a metal guard over the top of the lock-tab to stop a repeat.
Routine servicing is simple (I do it myself). Parts are cheap and easy off ebay. This car will only see a dealer if the check-engine warning light comes on this hasnt happened. If it does, they can plug it in and find out what's up. The abs 'Three Amigo' lights have come on a few times. One was a broken signal wire (overgrown tracks), the others have been transient. I bought an ABS Amigo off ebay to interrogate/clear codes/reset the TC system, and it's worked a treat. Worth keeping in the car just in case. The roof-lining has sagged - seems like they all do this. A few plastic tabs fixes that problem.
Great daily driver, big and comfy. Worth a try – I was lucky with this purchase, as my more knowledgable "Land Rover" friends all had horror stories of TD5's. Despite their warnings, I had to have one. In 1999 my TD5 Series 2 was the price of a modest house. Now, a decent one like mine can be had for the price of a motor scooter. Why is this so? Easy answer is in one word; Fear. Fear of things… Read more
going wrong, and expensive trips to the specialist mechanic etc etc.
Luckily for me, my car at 365,000 klms had been well sorted. Everything works as it should, she doesn't leak oil (much), she's comfy as an old sofa on all types of road surfaces, and I'm getting about 9 litres, maybe less, per hundred kilo's from her surprisingly willing little turbo diesel.
I've fixed a couple of electrical issues by seeking advice, and doing some fiddling about, I'm about to spend some coin on having a pro change the diff, gearbox and transfer case oils; as I don't want problems from these because of lack of maintenance. Also, I will be getting the brake lines flushed out, and the handbrake adjusted up.
She tows our caravan with ease, and our children love all the space in the back. It's a great people mover.
Yes, this one is a keeper. Reliable, reasonably fast (she eats the big miles like few other cars can), and very comfortable. Get a well sorted out one for a song like I did, and there's very little risk of disappointment. Worse case scenario, you would get your money back for the parts. Your not playing for sheep stations with these older Disco's; its a buyers market, so look carefully and have fun.
Great car! Highly recommend – Great car, highly recommend. I drive new cars for a living, and still competes with most of the new Japanese offerings. Drove a new 3.0 diesel prado kakadu recently, nice truck, but not as powerful as the figures would suggest, and handled like rubbish for a $75g car gutless and sloppy steer. Gimme my disco anyday. Saving for discovery 4 3.0, very… Read more
nice!! 2001 td5 auto. Pretty much everything, super comfortable, very reliable(touch wood), great visibility. ACE makes her handle like a sedan, great low range and center diff makes her it climb pretty much anything, tires generally let u down 1st Needed new ball joints recently, only $60 part, but took nearly 2 months. Heavy and bit sluggish, which isn't a problem normally, but having just completed a trip from Brisbane to Airly beach towing a 18fter with 4 fat buggers in the car, overtaking the occasional nomad or steep hill can be a problem, Looking into chipping the old girl soon. Having said that though, cruises very comfortably at 110, recently did Brisbane-Gladstone no boat, 3 people probably 100kg luggage with 50L diesel. Pretty stoked. Also wouldn't recommend for someone that doesn't service and may neglect it, i suspect would be very expensive
Land Rover Discovery 2 Best 4x4xfar – I purchased a 2002 model with 156,000 ks on it in November 2010. It was in very good condition, and I was smitten by the great drive height and feel. The 1st week I owned it, it left me stuck on the side of the road with a stuffed injector harness, and needed a tow to be repaired. Ok, a minor bug I thought. Then week after week, month after month,… Read more
all the little bugs turned into a swarm of money sucking leeches. It got so bad that I was too worried that it would break down on me again, that I never ended up taking it 4w driving. I got rid of it as fast as I could to a dealer, in mid 2012, for hardly any money return. I lost almost 10grand, ( then they had it back up for sale for 20,000 ), and felt totally jimped, and left a bad taste in my mouth never to look at another again.
Then a few months later, a good mates dad was getting rid of a 99 td5 model, had 290,000ks on it, and said I could try it out for a month whilst he was overseas. Wow! What an absolute difference. This car had, had all the problems fixed and so many more that my 2002 would have ended up getting, so I bit the bullet and purchased it for 15grand. It is now almost a year and a half after getting it, and we have had not 1 problem again. Regular servicing (every 5,000), and we now take it 4wdriving monthly, up to the Cape for its 3rd time, used as my daily driver, and have so much fun without the worry of it breaking down. It is a brilliant 4wd and is very capable.
Comfort is great, highway driving it sits on 100ks all day, and towing my 7mtr boat you wouldn't even know is there. Underbody clearance is good, and fuel economy is very good ( way better than the V8s I have heard from another friend) at 95litres does about 900 to 950 kms on the highway, and has now got 320,000ks on the clock with plenty more to go. At half a million ks I will change the engine, but I am keeping this car for life. We have owned 7 4wds of different brands, but this is the most capable. Parts are cheap, if you order from UK, or ebay, then get a good mechanic to fit them. They (the diesel), are also easy to work on for simple things. Not much to grease, and filters and oil are something most can do if you want to save some money (ebay for filters). ABS, Traction Control, and Hill descent lights can hit you 1100 bux when they make an appearance so be careful when buying that these lights dont come on. (Take it for a good test drive and ask to make sure).
Stay away from low kilometre cars (and dealers unless you get a long warranty), as they seem to all have this same everything breaks down at once syndrome. If you can find a good one that has had all, or most of the problems fixed, then it will be the best car/4wd you will own.
Go Land Rover! This one is an absolute pearler. The lower kilometer one we owned was a constant money sucking machine. Drive to experience. Once all the bugs are rectified, then the car is up there with the very best. Be careful of lower 90,000 to 230,000kilometre ones, buyer beware.
Disco Series 2 TD5 Auto = 10/10 ! – Bought a Demo 2001 in 2002 - I've had many cars in my life - THIS IS THE BEST ONE ! I have done 190,000 km now - still in great nic. Don't really have it serviced by LR Dealers because they will rip you off !!! (no doubt about that). LR Dealer in Canberra ripped me off for a service in 2002/03. Charged me over $1000 for an oil change at about… Read more
25,000 km and obviously I never went back. I change the oil/filter myself once a year. Had a few niggly problems like the injector loom at 100,000km - but thats about it. Fantastic engine (TD5) - fantastic economy - beautiful car to drive. Don't do any mods like the cowboys recommend (funny how the Cowboys seem to think they know more about engine performance than LR Engineers). My Disco is stock except for a bullbar (too many roos on the Hume Hwy). I have no oil leaks except for the power steering pump. At $53000 brand new - was well worth it. I don't ever want to sell it ! Driveability, Fuel Economy, Reliability, Comfort Roof liner sags after about 10 years
Not what you expect – Bought a demo model in 2003 with 2000km on the clock. Very basic model - manual, without ACE and air suspension. For the first 4 years run like a swiss clock untill friend talked me into trying a biodiesel. Half way through the very first tank fill car stopped in the middle of the road - needed new fuel pump. One fixed that (and never again filled… Read more
with biodiesel) the car run flawlessly untill two months ago when all of the sudden the engine picked up the revs to the point of destroying itself. Apparently that happens sometime on TD5 when the head cracks through the fuel rail. The car was meticulously serviced, looked after and done only 170000 km. Sadly, you learn a lot but after bad thing happened. Like the plastic locating dowels in a head and the screw getting loose on the oil pump. I like the car so 've opted for the change over engine. Hopefully this one will last a lot longer. Handling on and off road, excellent fuel economy. Oil leaks will drive you mad, body rattle - too many plastics. Very poor quality interior finish.

Disco isn't dead – OK, I bought one of these after I sold my beloved Defender. I have to say this was a great car the TD5 motor is a gem, good power great fuel consumption and very tune-able. Very nice on the highway etc. In fact it just does everything nicely in a mediocre sort of way. Which is good because if your buying a Disco, Patrol or Land Cruiser it's… Read more · 1
mediocrity all the way. Tow stuff, drop the kids off at school and 4x4 occasionally. Enjoy. The Disco is the pick of the soft roaders. If you want to Safari and boldly go where no man has gone before buy a Defender or spend a heap of money down at your local 4x4 shop getting it to do what a Defender can do out of the box, it'll still be missing the goods though. In summary it's a real toss bag of a car but it's the best softroader out there. But it is a soccer mums car. If you own a new one you've probably bought it to keep up with the Jones's. Very sad. But it is a great car just not a mans car. Still I'd have one over a Patrol or Landie any day. Any yes I sold it after a month and bought another Defender. It's just nice Not for me
A great journey – Our TD5 purchased in 2004 as a 5,000 demo has been a fantasitc vehical which we intend hanging onto for some time yet. Though we have had a few small repairs such as a new fuel pump, alternator and a few other general wear and tear issues, at almost 170,000 km we are very pleased. Excellent – This is my second discovery 2, first was a petrol 1999 v8 hmmm horrendous to run fuel wise but great power to weight ratio, sold it at a profit and bought a diesel td5 2000 6 months later, it is standard with no air suspension, dont ever buy one with air suspension, you might as well get the range rover and deal with the same issues in real… Read more
comfort and an impending divorce. im surprised people trash the Disco, ive never had an issue with them, sure wear and tear usual things belts/hoses/seals/tyres/pads but at pushing 180,000kms dont all cars need those? unfortunately at this age they all need doing month after month until you catch up. thats whats annoying. but as everyone says they kick butt over everything else.Looking forward to the disc 3 in a few months Great Driving position, comfortable, awesome on highway and offroad, reliable, economical, never had a problem except fair wear and tear at 170000kms head lining sloppy on all of them...parts and service from dealers ridiculous stick to ebay and a mechanic that knows land rovers but is not attached to a dealership... happy days.
Excellent – Any car that has done 150,000ks is going to have at least something go wrong, so I still think this is a fantastic car. I love that car – I bought it two years ago - 2003 TD5, fully equipped. Lots of repairs in the first month or so. Oil leaks and pneumatic suspension. But that was all. synthetic engine oil and change it every 10,000 instead of the recommended 20,000 interval. I have Michelin LTX light truck tyres on it which have dine 128,000 kilometres and at last measurement have another 20 + thousand on them. Very easy on tyres. wouldn't buy anything else. Rides like a car, extremely economical, very good tow vehicle. great long distance tourer. Best off road vehicle I've ever owned. Parts can be expensive but over all no more so than a Toyota.
Terrible – I wish I had the good experience others have had. Loved the car off road but it was so unreliable I only did this once. It cost me $10,000 in 3 months in repairs and the previous owner $15,000. Good – We already had a patrol but were looking for an upgrade and were going to buy another Patrol of the same year. 4WDriving and I love it! My partner has had Patrols and Cruisers before so he is not partial to one brand and has said that this is the best value for money. As mentioned before they are notorious for oil leaks but ours only leaked oil (bought second hand) for two months until we got all the seals fixed and have not had a problem (one year later). From a short women's perspective I could not see over the bonnet of the Patrol even with the driver's seat all the way forward whereas I can see fine in this and it's not all the way forward. The back seat is hard to get babies in and out of (this is only because it's been lifted 4") but it is not the main family car, we only put the kids in it when we go 4WDriving and they love being able to see other cars and nearly being the same height as trucks. I've also found since driving a 4WD my back problems have ceased as I am sitting on the seat and not in it, but this would be the case with most 4WD and not just Dicos. ACE, TC, CDL (our has to be operated with the 10mm spanner as no system yet), just about everything about it. Back doors can be hard to get into (but that's probably as it's been given a 4" lift and no side steps yet). Oil leaks (but as they say, don't panic unless it stops leaking).
What is it with Land Rover? – I purchased my 2003 TD5 Platinum edition in 2006 with 90,000kms on it. Seriously nice vehicle to drive with that 'special' feel however somwhat unreliable. closed up shop. Unfortunately, I believe they did not do the work and repairs that they charged me for and that I paid for. I became so dissatisfied with them I just sold the vehicle. I now regret it and am considering another one. Having said that I purchased a Pajero after the discovery and have travelled 150,000 in three years and this vehicle has not missed a trick. Not a single problem so I am somewhat reluctant to venture back to what was overall a nice car but a damn unreliable one. Ride, fuel efficiency, look, feel, Towing capacity, Air suspension, 7 seater, Just unreliable, parts expensive, Dealership was deceiptful and basically had no idea.

strong. The only modification i have done was to replace the springs with a 50mm lift and have a spare set of tyres for the mud. I have never been out driven by a patrol or cruiser with the same specs. In fact it puts them to shame in the rough mountain terrain.
Don't Buy one that doesn't have a centre diff lock that cant be operated eg late 2002-2003 model.
I love driving mine and since getting a company car miss the daily runs to work with the great all round visability and comfort. A fantastic all rounder, I have driven this car in some hostile terrain and up slopes you couldn't even walk up and then cruised back home on the blacktop in the same comfort as a Statesman. The drivers position is the best, you can see everything. Fuel economy is very good on a run. Replacement parts from main dealers are a joke, but thank god for ebay and UK internet sites in fact avoid main dealers at all costs.
Good – We love our Disco, have just returned from travelling around Aust, 26K klms pulling a 23ft caravan and not a problem at all, all we did was service it well and put fuel in it. which means less fatigue at the end of a long day 4wdriving. On the flip side I have had a few problems. The fuel filter behind the r/h back wheel dumped all the fuel out of the tank and left me and my 8yr old grand daughter stranded on a remote country road 8pm. This problem was ongoing for the next 6 months. The next problem relates to fitting the wrong rims (chinese I later found out)so make sure you use only landrover rims. That problem took over a year to work out. Next I towed a 21' caravan and strait away had exhaust manifold distortion. I ended up putting an after market strenthened manifold on and stopped towing the caravan. A few other minor anoying leaks etc but otherwise I love my disco.
OK – Once I get it back from the mechanics I will probably forget about the issues because it is such a great drive. tried to put in it. Two years time and I will probably be telling you I have another one!!!!! I love driving this car. The comfort, visibility, handling are fantastic. I moved from a Mercedes 240D to the TD5 and apart from up off the ground the handling was just as light as the sedan. Fuel economy and low,low gear is phenomenal. Top ladies vehicle. From week two it had mechanical problems. Under warranty not a hip-pocket issue other than off the road for too long waiting for parts etc. Wonderful technology but poor quality control. I would hate to make a list of major repairs and costs.
