Built to fail – In 2021 we bought a 6 month old Golf 390 Savannah Maxxi from a couple who had used it for a two week holiday in a caravan park. It was so new the… Read more
plastic was still on the stove, outdoor shower and the toilet had never been used nor had the awning. We picked it up and on the way home it poured raining, the air conditioning leaked. We didn't think much about it but then the problem became worse. Soon the back push up bar screws fell out. When this area of the roof was pressed it was soft. Nothing we did helped. Then we noticed a sag in the roof around the air conditioning. We contacted Golf and were told it may need a new roof. We were not under warranty because the van was second hand. It is now getting a new roof put on by a private caravan repairer. His words when he saw the workmanship of this caravan were disgraceful, lazy, cheap, built to fail. The air conditioning had no support and so bounced around whenever it was driven. Highway driving was dangerous much less off road, which is what this caravan is sold as. The van roof was pooling 5 cm of water each time it rained. Up shot is the roof of the van was mush when it came off. The water was pouring through the shower and air conditioning each time it rained. We are now fixing the roof of a 2 and half year old van. Ridiculous! We have also replaced the struts which hold up the bedroom because they were put in upside down, according to the strut manufacturer, no wonder the bedroom was sagging. Golf should be ashamed of their product. It is such a shame, we love our little van, with more care and attention to detail and a little accountability this could have been a great review. Our van is getting repaired by a fantastic repairer who takes pride in his work, doesn't take short cuts and it's thanks to him we will have a terrific van, no thanks to Golf. There needs to be a caravan standard. Golf have a long way to go to meet a basic standard of workmanship

bar the smoke alarm going off when cooking some toast (without the smoke). Purchased from the Golf supercenter in Burpengary and so far have been happy with after sales performance. Had a couple of things we needed fixed and done as soon as could be fitted in. Couldn't book in for the 1000km service before we go on our red center trip so they advised me of another caravan repair shop they recommend to service it. So, it's small, light and easy to set up and it has won us over. Just an update on the 8/12/22
We have done our trip to the red centre via the Plenty hwy to the West MacDonnell ranges, Kings Canyon and Uluru, then home via Coober Pedy, Broken Hill, Wilcannia and Lightning Ridge. 6500kms with approx 900kms on gravel, dirt, bulldust and corrigations. After sealing the door vent we had bugger all dust ingress, bugger all damage, just a electric brake wire was hit by stones and snapped (easy fix), and some other stone damage to the grey water outlet and one reflector. Suspension, tyres lights and everything else is spot on. We did find a few minor issues with the trailer but once we got in contact with The Golf Supercentre at Burpengary all was fixed no worries. Next trip will be to north Qld and the cape. So I have now updated scores as well. If a small van/camper trailer is what you are after, I can highly recommend this one. Update 2. Done nth qld, Atherton, Daintree and the Cape. On road it is still a dream to tow, off road it follows beautifully. We travelled the Bloomfield track, Battecamp Rd and the PDR and Bamaga rd's to tow it to Seiseawere we stayed for a few nights. We got some minor damage eg, 4 plastic cupboard locks broke, and the table fell off when I hit a wash out to hard. All was fixed by dealer when it got booked in. There were no shock leaks and structurally it is still strong. Also took it over to Moreton Island for 5 nights and in the sand it was OK to pull behind the Ranger. As it is a touch wider than the car, one trailer wheel stayed in the car track and the other made its own track. With a battery upgrade to lithium we had no problems with power and half a gas bottle ran the fridge for that time with some left over. Still loving it.
