Hard to lock in a weight for moving babyThese scales look great and are light weight and I like it goes to 2 decimal places for accuracy however it’s near impossible to lock in babies weight as they move around and the number jump up and down , it doesn’t lock in a weight like other advanced scales which is disappointing Show details

InaccurateNice features but it's accurate to 1kg at best, varies all over the place depending on exactly how you stand on it. Choose another product if you want something that is actually fit for purpose. Show details

Someone standing on a digital bathroom scale.

What can bathroom scales measure?

In addition to weight, some bathroom scales measure other information, such as Body Mass Index (BMI), Basal Metabolic Weight (BMR) and Active Metabolic Weight (AMR), or information about your body composition (such as body fat, muscle mass, bone mass and water percentage). If it measures body fat, it will usually be referred to as a ‘body fat scale’.

These metrics can be useful if you’re training or are trying to track progress on a specific health, fitness or strength regime. However, they should not be the only indicators you consider when tracking health.

Here are some other points to consider when deciding what you want your scale to measure.

  • Often scales have a measurement range, for example, a model may only be able to measure up to 180kg.
  • Some scales can also track your standing heart rate, which can be useful to monitor certain health conditions and give you a better picture of your overall health.
  • Certain models can also let you keep track of certain metrics to do with pregnancy (some claim to be able to recognise and track your child’s growth), however, this shouldn’t replace seeing a doctor or health professional.
  • If a scale offers ‘Baby mode’, this feature helps you keep track of your child’s growth by just stepping on the scale with your baby in your arms.

How to use a bathroom scale

Whether you have a conventional bath scale or a scale that measures body fat, it’s recommended to take your measurements and record the results regularly. This will provide you with a better picture of where you’re at than just taking occasional measurements.

An important thing to note is that body fat scales generally aren’t recommended for anyone with a pacemaker or any other internal medical device. They also aren’t recommended for those who are pregnant. It’s important to consult your doctor first to check that these devices are safe for you to use.

Here are some other things to keep in mind when using a scale:

  • Place the scale on a hard, level surface.
  • Measure yourself at the same time of day, keeping in mind that if you change your meal times frequently this may impact the accuracy of your results.
  • Avoid taking a reading immediately after you’ve woken up or after a meal.
  • If you’re using a body fat scale, use it with bare feet to ensure proper contact with the scale’s sensors.

What to consider when choosing a bathroom scale

Mechanical vs. digital scales

Bathroom scales can measure your weight in two ways: mechanically, with a spring mechanism, or electronically, converting the force of the weight to an electric signal. Digital bathroom scales are thought to be more accurate and repeatable than mechanical scales.

How accurate are bathroom scales?

The accuracy of a scale is difficult to determine before you take it home and test it out. Typically, scales are more accurate at measuring weight than other measurements, such as body fat.

When it comes to measuring body fat, keep in mind that even good scales may have a difference of around 3 to 4% either way. This means they can give you a pretty good indication of your body fat or body composition and are more useful at tracking trends, rather than providing a completely accurate result.

Features

There are some features on weight scales that can make them easier to use. These include, but aren’t limited to, the following:

  • Automatic on/off: Many, if not most, scales will automatically turn on and weigh the load when they detect someone or something on the scale.
  • Multi-user: Some scales can recognise and track data of multiple users, with some models offering tracking up to 10 users.
  • Use on carpet: Most scales need to be used on a hard, level floor, but some can still accurately weigh you if they’re used on carpet.
  • Weather forecast: Certain models even have access to a weather forecast, helping you plan for your day.
  • Weight only: If you have a scale that can take measurements other than weight, this feature simplifies your readings so that it only shows your weight.

Power

Body weight scales and body fat scales are most often battery-powered. If it takes rechargeable batteries, then check how long they last. Often scales have a battery that can last up to 12 months.

Display

A large display with clear lettering will be easier to read when you’re standing on the scale. The data displayed should also be simple to understand and be on the screen long enough to be able to easily read it. Backlit LCD displays tend to be easy to read.

Some models also let you display data in different measurements, for example, being able to display your weight in either kilograms, pounds or stones. Most scales will display weight in 100g increments, so check before you buy if you require greater accuracy.

Connectivity

Some bathroom scales can be connected to an app on a smart device - these are sometimes referred to as smart scales. Each app is different, but when synced with your scales, they usually help you track your progress, letting you set goals and monitor your data. Some even provide motivation for those with fitness-oriented goals.

Make sure you read reviews to see if an app is actually user-friendly and easy to set up. If it lags, isn’t easy to use or doesn’t help you track useful information, then it shouldn’t be a selling point for any scale you’re considering buying.

Note that some apps are only compatible with certain phones or operating systems, so check this before you buy.

Cost

Bathroom scales can cost anywhere from $20 to over $250. Scales with features like Wi-Fi connectivity and the ability to measure body fat will likely cost you over $100.

Also look for a warranty; many models come with a 1-year warranty.
