 AI reviews summary

The recent feedback for Amber Electric reveals a stark divide between users who have successfully automated their solar and battery systems and those facing severe technical or administrative hurdles. While the wholesale model offers significant financial upside for engaged users with large batteries, a critical surge in customer volume has led to a widespread breakdown in support services.

Pros
  • Significant Cost Savings: Users with large solar and battery setups frequently report reducing their bills to zero or maintaining substantial credits, particularly during summer.
  • Wholesale Market Access: The transparency of the app allows users to capitalise on price spikes and buy energy at near-zero or negative rates during high renewable generation.
  • Effective Automation: When functioning correctly, the SmartShift technology successfully optimises battery charging and discharging without requiring daily manual intervention.
  • User-Friendly Interface: The mobile app is widely praised for providing clear, real-time data on usage, market pricing, and grid status.
Cons
  • Non-existent Customer Support: A critical and recurring complaint is the inability to reach a human. Users report waiting months for email replies, being disconnected after long hold times, and receiving only generic automated apologies.
  • Onboarding and Technical Failures: Multiple reviewers highlight months-long delays in "onboarding" batteries or smart meters, leading to financial losses due to negative feed-in tariffs and lack of solar curtailment.
  • Erratic Automation Logic: Some users report "SmartShift" making counter-intuitive decisions, such as importing expensive grid power when batteries are full or exporting during negative price windows.
  • Billing and Administrative Errors: Frequent reports of delayed billing (up to 9 months), incorrect meter data being linked to accounts, and failure to apply referral or concession discounts.
Verdict

Amber Electric is a high-performance option for technologically savvy households with significant battery storage who are willing to monitor their system. However, the company is currently struggling with a severe support backlog that leaves customers stranded when technical or billing issues arise. Prospective users should ensure their hardware is fully compatible and be prepared for potential onboarding delays before switching.

I have a 6.6kW solar system, a 41kWh battery, and an EV. I found that Amber simply did not work for my household, and I ended up paying double what I… Read more

now pay on a dedicated EV plan.

Here is why I found Amber unsuitable for my needs,

>The "selling high" strategy never materialized for me. While the app often forecasts high export prices, in reality, the export rates remained very close to the import price during peak times, making it nearly impossible to generate meaningful credits.

>Amber's low midday import rates are marketed as a benefit, but in practice, I frequently found these rates to be higher than 10¢/kWh, which is significantly more expensive than the rates offered by dedicated EV plans.

>During recent cloudy spells in Sydney, my system couldn't generate enough surplus to cover my usage, forcing me to rely on grid power at rates that made my bills unsustainable.

I believe Amber’s model is likely only profitable for households with a massive, constant energy surplus that never requires grid energy. For anyone who needs to rely on the grid for EV charging or home heating, the costs do not stack up.

If you have an EV and home battery, I strongly recommend comparing dedicated EV plans rather than relying on wholesale models.

Since switching to an OVO Energy EV plan with a fixed, ultra-low overnight rate, I have seen my bills drop significantly. If you like to switch to OVO , you can use below link to get some discount ; [Content Removed]

I recently connected up with Amber Electricity and overall the experience has been really positive. Getting set up was quite straightforward. The key is just to actually read the instructions in the email they send through, and if you follow those step by step the connection process is smooth with no real issues. For context, I’m running a 48kWh… Read more

battery system (FoxESS CQ6) paired with a H3-10.0 smart inverter, along with 11.9kWh of solar on the roof using a Sungrow SG10.0RT inverter. The inverters are coupled, and everything has integrated without any complications.

What I really like is the level of control you still have as the battery owner. You’re not locked out of anything, you can still manage how your battery is used, while also having their SmartShift technology working in the background. SmartShift optimises things on your behalf, including when to sell energy back to the grid, which helps maximise returns without needing to constantly monitor it.

Financially, it’s already been a noticeable improvement. In just 16 days I’ve built up $16.44 in credit. For comparison, over that same sort of period previously I would have been sitting around -$18. So it’s effectively been a $30+ swing in the right direction, which is a pretty remarkable turnaround.

Also worth noting there has been absolutely no disruption to my energy supply at all since connecting. Everything has run seamlessly, no issues, no outages, no complaints in that regard whatsoever.

From what I’ve seen, some of the more negative reviews seem to come down to setup or troubleshooting complexity in certain situations, and at times response times can be slower due to the high volume of battery uptake and support demand. In my view, it’s best to work through the setup carefully using the provided instructions first, and only reach out to Amber support if you’ve exhausted those steps and then wait for their response when they’re able to get back to you.

If anyone is considering joining, they’re welcome to use my referral code:

About 8 years ago before I had even heard of Amber I was getting huge gas bills especially in the winter, I only had gas heating, so I decided to go all electric and fitted 20 soler panels, solar hot water heater, 2 panels & (electric boosted), then a solar battery & Rev cycle Heat & Air conditioning. ~$35k however, I am confident that with the price of electricy consistently increasing, I won't ever regret investing in Solar Generation and Battery Storage, and in signing up with Amber Electricity. POSITIVES: I can easily control when I charge my batteries and when I discharge excess stored power to the grid. Since upgrading my Solar System I have never had an Electricity Bill where I am not in credit overall. My current credit with Amber is $121.17. I'm also expecting another negative for this month (March 2026). The Big Positive with Amber is the access to whole sale price of electricity with the average price I have paid for the last 12 months of 15.7c/kWh. Check your latest bill, without access to the wholesale price of electricity, you'll be getting charged ~40c/kWh.

THE 'NOT SO GOOD': 99% of activity on the Amber App for my Battery Charging and Discharging is done manually by me. I have been able to get into the habit of discharging power to the grid after 6:30pm when the sun has been shining. It takes about 5 minutes to do this and under normal conditions can provide $1 - $3 per day of income each day I discharge to the grid. This doesn't sound like a lot, but over a month it helps to offset the electricity supply charge and the Amber subscription cpost, particularly between late Spring and Early Autumn (When the days are warmest).

The NEGATIVE; The one charge on my electricity bills which I never fully understood, was the 'NETWORK DEMAND CHARGE'. In the past, this has had a devastating impact on the bill for the month. This charge and the impact it can have on my bill was never fully explained to me. In September 2025 the Network Demand Charge on my bill was ~$150. This resulted in all of the savings I had made over the month being wiped from my account. I am not the best person to explain this charge but it relates to the Maximum Power Demand you place on the grid when you are importing power from the grid. There could be any number of reasons why you may need to import from the grid when you have batteriess installed but if you understand the impact it can have on your bill, then you can make decisions on your usage and discharge behaviour to ensure this cost is minimised.

EXAMPLE: In September 2025, my 'NETWORK DEMAND CHARGE' was $150, this was based on the fact that I imported at a rate of 12.53kW for 'a short period' and was charged at the rate of $11.9333/kW for that period. On this occasion, I was charging my batteries from the grid while my hot water service was also using power. I imported 545kWh for that month but I was charged on the PEAK DEMAND amount for that month. Now I'm aware of the impact this has on my bill, I have changed my behaviour so that I do not import power from the grid AT ALL, if I can avoid it. This does reduce my potential earnings for the month however, my latest NETWORK DEMAND CHARGE for February was only $22.74 for a maximum peak demand of 2.11kW. On this occasion, the power import from the grid occurred during an evening when the batteries were exhausted and I needed to import power to supply the fridge, TV and other small appliances. My excess energy that was discharged into the grid for that same month earned me $88.37. A much better outcome.

OVERALL EXPERIENCE: It has taken me quite some time to understand how best to manage my Solar Battery Charging and Discharging pattern but coupled with this, being able to manage our household power consumption has made my overall experience rewarding. My electricty bills, prior to installing Solar Panels and Batteries were between $600 - $800 per quarter ($2800 per year). I Know.... It looks like the payback period for the system will be more than 10 years but that's if electricty prices don't go up. My ongoing reward comes from being confident that, for the forseeable future, I may never get another electricity bill. I'm no expert, and these are my own words, based on my own experience. I hope this helps you make your decision to get a Solar Panel Battery system installed and sign up with Amber. P.S. I wasn't able to upload photos because Google limits my upload options.

Do you have a home battery? Then you need to use Amber. There are two components to Amber Electric: (1) Access to the wholesale electricity market and (2) 'Smart' control of your home battery. The ability to access the wholesale spot market for electricity means that you can get extremely cheap electricity, particularly during the day (when the… Read more

sun is shining) and overnight (when demand is low). The price is dramatically lower than any 'fixed-price' electricity retailer might offer. However, it is important to realise that in times of high demand, the spot price for electricity can sometimes jump to many times the normal level. For example, at its cheapest it might be 5c/kWh, but it can jump to $20/kWh or even higher at rare times.

If you do NOT have a battery, this means that your price for electricity can be crazy high just when you want to use your air conditioner or cook dinner. Amber might not be for you.

If you DO have a battery, then you will be doubly-rewarded. First, you can use the energy stored in your battery to avoid the high prices. This means your average cost of energy remains low. Secondly, Amber for Batteries offers you SmartShift, which can intelligently control your battery. In times of high prices, it will sell the energy from your battery into the grid, thus EARNING you money when the price is high. It also supports the grid, making it more green and more reliable.

A typical Amber customer with solar and a battery will have totally free power during the sunnier months and cheaper power during the darker months. In total, it is quite possible that you will have a zero bill for electricity for the year as a whole but this depends on the size of your solar and battery system, how much electricity you typically use and where you are located (eg QLD vs NSW vs VIC).

While Amber for Batteries is automated, you should still try to understand what is happening with your household energy consumption to fully take advantage of SmartShift. For example, in times of high prices, it is a good idea to turn off your power-hungry devices (eg air conditioner) so that you can earn money from the power rather than consuming it yourself. Solar households work best if the energy is consumed while the sun is shining, so adjust your household routines to use clothes washers, dishwashers and air conditioning while the sun shines. Also, Amber works well with Heat-Pump Hot Water systems since you can program them to heat water when energy is priced low (daytime, overnight) and avoid the expensive evening period.

Put simply, if you have Solar and a battery, use Amber. If you DO NOT have a battery, then Amber is typically not a good option unless you are very aware of how energy consumption works in your household and you are prepared to sometimes stop using electricity while prices are high.

As a result we were delighted to add a 48kWh battery to our home in Newcastle,NSW adding to the 20kWh pv array, and selected Amber. We we're happy to wait 2 weeks to speak with the Amber representative rather than try and make sense of the January 2026 website Amber had available (it was poorly designed and contradictory, and failed to make explicit some pretty basic details) The consultant was terrific and easily answered the 15 minutes or so of questions and gave a sense of clarity and integrity. The sign up contracting and commissioning went well. No delays or failures apparent to us unchanging from Red Energy to Amber and giving control from Solar Edge app to Amber. We made decent $150 or so profit monthly profits in Jan - March. Beware, somewhere in that finest of fine print is that you can't take the money out every month, only once per quarter! However, what has really irritated me is that the app doesn't reliably function (to my standard, a reliable standard is less failures than 5x per month). There have been hours where the app reports receiving my instruction to buy or sell, indicates that it is ( by having a clock count up) but is failing to buy or sell. If this had been acknowledged by customer service help desk, I would be annoyed but modified. I haven't had any exorbitant being acknowledged, only my complaints minimised and obfuscation. To actually save money in May and June with Amber requires much more detailed monitoring daily for minutes repeatedly between 1630hrs and say 1930hrs than I can regularly undertake.
