Hi people have just bought a new hilux looking for a durable bar, I had the ecb hammer finish alloy chunky winch bar on my colorado look fantastic, had my doubts about its strenght, with what appears to be morenight life on the roads, I was thinking of a steel bar then I read there has been a lot of trouble with rust, my question is there a tough alloy bar out there?

Have had the ECB units on the ranger and aside from the odd polish to keep up the luster, it has performed well in two 50 km\h ish roo hits. Weight was a big factor for us also as the ranger covers 35k a year so handling is better than big heavy steel that also wears out the tyres etc a lot quicker. Go steel if you must, but alloy will see you through most of life's hiccups!

There are many 4WD bullbar manufacturers in Australia and the world . I am not sure why some people have reported issues with ARB bars . However , I have ditched my Factory Alloy bullbar ($2500) as the reality is I could not take a chance with being stranded in the event of an impact with a 'roo' and then risk being stranded due to a damaged radiator core and headlights . The new ARB deluxe bar is a far superior product with real engineering , ADR compliance and surprising value for money considering that it comes from one of the best 4WD suppliers in the world . If worrying about why tyres are wearing out prematurely or suspension deficiencies - this means the vehicle needs improvements in these areas to cater for the extra weight of such steel bars . In the end , the solution used will be dependent on budget and performance and function of your vehicle . In my case , I made a decision to make changes to improve the vehicle overall - so as to allow me to achieve my goals in my new found 4wd hobby . I don't like gambling , and I will always stop straight on the road with a steel bar , the secondary reaction to avoid the 'roo' by swerving off course would generally not end well . This is what I had done in the past due to the worry of impact with an alloy bar .

I agree with you AndyB, I also have a ECB Bullbar and am extremely happy with it, I know most people think steel is stronger than Alloy but not the Alloy ECB use. Its a 6mm grade 5 commercial alloy and is structurally stronger than the light weight steel ARB use in there factory in Thailand. The upgrade required for the steel bars put me off as I know the car manufacturers use good quality products and I will not void my warranty if something goes to pot. I have hit a big red roo at 110 and no issue, a mate hit a roo with his steel bar and it did more damage to his bar and car. Plus the kicker is the rust on my mates bar due to the stone chips, mine is also guaranteed for life not to rust

Pato works for ECB. Should have disclosed this as there is a definite conflict of interest in his answer.
