The only advantage (and it's a big one) I can think of is that once you are with Athena there are minimal fees. The disadvantages are several and refer to Athena's lack of user friendliness: - the app is very temperamental, in that it very often refuses to log onto my account despite inputting the correct codes. to no avail yet. - you can only speak to a person within the basic hours of 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday (not even stretched to 5.30pm). - the app is meant to be more user friendly than their website,.... but surprise, surprise it's not. For example, I tried to withdraw some funds from my offset account only to be told there is a maximum limit (a very low $ amount) unless you speak to a person at Customer Support. There is no option in the app to make any change to this limit. Guess when this discovery happened? Yep, 5.10pm when all the humans had gone home. To be fair, when you do get hold of someone during 9-5, they are very helpful. Just a shame we are in the 21st century, but Athena's service is back in the 20th century.

an unconditional-upon-finance 30-day offer. The market was still hot, and I’d been disappointed in the past.

I tried to talk to my bank, and another, about applying for a mortgage and they were confusing and opaque and didn’t tell me about costs that I later found out about.

I asked my friend who have been successful in the investment property market for advice, and she said straight up ‘Athena’.

The application: • The application process was easy to read about and understand. • I could text my person at Athena at any time and I’d get a text back within ten minutes or so, or if I asked him to call, he called me. Athena was fast, responsive and reliable. • I was clueless and had lots of silly questions, and he always made me feel good about asking questions. He also answered clearly. • I was very nervous about my 30-day settlement deadline, and Athena assured me they understood and could have the loan ready. • Uploading my documents was simple, despite me not being great at technology. • I could log in anytime and confirm that my documents were there, see the tick showing they were in order, and see what the next step was. • There were no delays from Athena. When they said they’d need to inspect the property to value it, I was worried because the tenant made inspections cumbersome, but that was also smooth and quick. • When the loan was offered, being in Queensland I couldn’t sign one document electronically, and needed to print and send one document to the financer in Sydney by mail. I was worried about how long it would take. When I expressed my worry to Athena by text, they replied that if there was a delay, they could somehow work around it, and it wouldn’t hold up settlement. • Athena liaised with my conveyancing solicitor without any problem. They had everything done well in advance of the thirty days to settlement. • I’m still not very financially literate, but to my knowledge Athena was transparent, straightforward about the product they offer, and forthright about fees.

Having the loan: • It is easy to transfer money into the offset account. • There are no fees to transfer into the offset account. • I like that there are no annual feels. • I can pay off my loan quickly without financial penalty. • The website is easy to use for my banking (I know I should get the app though). I’ve experienced no glitches or times I can’t access it.

promised to always match existing customers' rates to whatever was being advertised, so we took the plunge and applied.

As hubby and I are both sole traders and our income isn't super high, I was a bit worried whether or not we would get approved, but since we had all our financials in order and could verify all our income and expenses they were more than happy to accept us. (Our original application was for $200,000 but because of our income we did end up being approved for $190,000) They were pretty meticulous with their checking, and will go through even minor details in statements to verify everything so please keep that in mind.

The application process itself was pretty easy as everything was done online. It took about 2 months from application (Early October) to settlement (Mid-December). Getting all the required documents ready and uploading everything was probably the most tedious part.

Customer service was pretty good. You can call, email or text Athena and their responses were generally quite quick. I personally used texts a lot and they were always willing to assist with any question I had during the application process.

So far, its been a year since we first came to Athena, and we are very happy we did. Since they're a no frills online lender we no longer pay any annual fees. (We originally paid $399 a year for offset, split loan facility plus rewards credit card, which we no longer saw value in). But they still provide an offset facility for no extra cost, which helps keep our interest payments down.

For those refinancing and not requiring a gigantic loan, I would highly recommend giving Athena a go. You are welcome to use our referral code ATH-99475 which means we both get a $500 cashback when approved. ($250 if applied after November 30).

If we could provide -1 star no doubt we would! We have been with Athena for our home loan for under 12 months, and if we could have moved elsewhere sooner we would have! After being offered a better deal with CBA we decided to make the switch. To which Athena has taken well over the allowable 2 week period to even accept! Only after a phone call… Read more

were we assured it would be accepted….. Yet here we are some nearly 4 weeks in and STILL waiting! Only after submitting a complaint to AFCA did we even warrant a response! Rubbish service and rubbish rates from former bank executives! In 2025 guys. DO BETTER! If you have a broker trying to sell you this mob, run fast it’s not worth it and their payment schedule is equally rubbish. Disappointed is an understatement. Save yourself the stress and simply don’t!

not competitive – not really customer friendly. when you ask for a home loan rate review they just give you the options for what their current loans are not really taking into account your profile and history with them. seems like they aren't really rate competitive and only for consumers who are happy to just go with a product once but not bother to review the loan and rate. Show details

One of the best things? They actually drop their rates straight away when the RBA does — no waiting, no games. It’s such a refreshing change compared to the big banks, who always seem to take their time passing on cuts (if they do at all).
