Between October and December 2025 I purchased several items for birthdays and Christmas presents for family. Firstly, the website was extremely interesting and easy to navigate. Products were listed according to several factors: age, interest, toys & games, books, home & lifestyle, gifts, magazines. With an 8 year old granddaughter, I HAD to buy a… Read more

couple of bags of the Freeze Dried Dinosaur Poo! At the same time, I included a nifty Plasma Ball for my husband. My order was processed and delivered (if memory serves) within a week or less. I then spotted their Lunar Nightlight, which was processed on 13 December and delivery was made within four days and also arrived in great time for Christmas! Products are of great to high quality. Well packaged for postal delivery and arrived promptly via Australia Post.

The Australian Geographic Shop has a large range of unique and educational, informative and fun gifts for young and old alike. I really can't recommend them more highly.

Rubbish - save you money and buy something reliable – 5 in 1 weather station. Save your money, absolute rubbish. Anemometer doesn't work - vanes spin but speed doesn't register. Temperature and compass are so small you need a magnifier to read the temperature or direction. Rain gauge - ha - remove a small plastic container and place it somewhere away from overhead obstructions. What's the point in having a weather station that has to be located in different locations around the yard.

Aust. Geographic 10X40 Telephoto Magnifier Monocular – I was always under the impression that Australian Geographic products were a reputable brand of products until I purchased the 10X40 Telephoto Magnifier Monocular. This unit was rated to work on the supplied tripod and allow you to attach your phone to it to take pictures. The tripod when only the moncular unit was attached was ok. However, when… Read more

my Samsung Galaxy phone was attached the attaching device plastic fell off the eyepiece where it was meant to attach to securely dropping my phone onto the concrete driveway and damaging the screen. Purchased this unit through my local post office. I took it back and all they offered me was the cost of the Monocular as it was deemed faulty. No compensation to my damaged phone. I declined. I contacted the distributor who is Ultimatum Pty.Ltd by phone in the first instance who asked me to send an email to their returns department with the pictures. This I did no reply. All the compensation I can get is the purchase price of this Monocular as to the damage to my phone following their instructions. No response. I am out of pocket for a replacement phone $265.00.

A shop to view for gifts for the young minds – I recently visited the Australian Geographic shop at Garden City, Booragoon, Perth to have a browse at what they were selling. I left the shop pleasantly surprised at what the shop was retailing. First of all, I believe that it is important for Australian to buy locally as opposed to buying from the Internet. stores before they become extinct and a thing of the past. Secondly, the opportunity to pick up an item to read the item content and purpose is one of the best approach to select a gift appropriate to the person you are buying the gift for.

I went looking for a gift for my 9 years old nephew who has an inquisitive mind. I also wanted to buy a gift that will allow him to engage with his parents. I left the shop with a board game that met my two criteria for a gift, to keep the mind active/inquisitive and for him to engage with his parents. The game is called the "5 Second Rule".

I am not reviewing the board game but stores such as Australian Geographic that carries a wide range of products from microscopes to robotic development kits. Living in an era where children are so glued to their mobile phones or tablets, I offer an alternative gift where children can explore and develop their faculties other than just being glued to their phone/tablet.

Mavic Pro 2 just recently. While people were anxiously waiting for stock from the big brand sellers, I had no patience for that. I’m spontaneous, and in the moment I decided I wanted one, I searched all the known places that sell them. All the known sellers were out of stock and I’d have to wait, I was told. I commented on the manufacturers (DJI’s) Facebook page that if I could get one that day, I’d buy it. Not long after, I had someone named Dylan contact me through messenger, telling me he works at Australian Geographic in Mackay, QLD and that he could get me one. Can’t say I wasn’t a little on guard, naturally. He advised me to Google the store number and call there, to verify he was genuine. Dylan said that his supplies come from a Melbourne based distributor. He then offered to call the National Sales Manager of that distributor to see what he could do. We maintained contact through Messenger for the day, while Dylan bounced phone calls around through his network. I need to add here, that it was Dylans DAY OFF work. He’s an employee; not a franchisee or an owner. So Dylan got back to me, advising that the National Sales Manager has some reserve stock kept at a distribution warehouse (name and contact number for distributor was supplied and verified). I called that distribution warehouse and they advised that there was no stock. Dylan then advised me to mention the National Sales Manager’s name to the receptionist, so I called back and did that. That secured me a brand new, sealed Mavic Pro 2 (yes, sealed and brand new), which was then shipped out and arrived in two days after my contact from Dylan. On top of that, I got the best price that I could find anywhere (a price match) and free shipping. All the way through and even up until now, Dylan has been in close contact with me to check that I’m setting things up right, and that everything is good. I was an employer and in the retail industry. I was constantly looking for people who could offer a good level of commitment to their role. Australian Geographic, you have an employee who, on his day off, has gone way beyond my expectations and I’d assume well beyond yours as well, in making an extraordinary effort in getting me a product that so many others are struggling to get, due to high demand. Outstanding service. I thought you should know.

Rubbish item – Difficult to mount and align with the phone lens. Attachment of monocular to the phone cradle is unreliable and can result in dropping either the phone or the monocular on the ground. Focusing is difficult. The cradle has tendency to slip so that the lenses are out of alignment. The mounting points for the tripod came loose and will not tighten. I wish I didn't been buy it. Unreasonably expensive for the quality of goods – Bought an A-Z animals poster. Just a mere piece of folded paper with creases. Paid $15.95 for poster and around $12 shipping cost. Pathetic waste of time! – I purchased an item on their 80% prices frenzy sale. Nine days later and after three emails from me to them, they finally reply saying I had missed out on the item I had purchased, even though it was listed as in stock when I purchased it. Will never shop here again - Absolutely Outrageous Treatment of their Customers – My original experience with the Australian Geographic store was a good one, however it soured into an absolute disgrace overnight. Please read the following as you will not believe the obtuse behaviour of store managers and as directed by their regional manager and other senior store managers. This is not skin deep, their problems are systemic… Read more

within their toxic organisation, said from my experience from the outside as a new customer. Of course this is just my experience.

Please read through as you will not believe what follows and what I was told and accused of. As a result, I and my family will never shop at Australian Geographic again, and I am sharing my experience here to warn others, and hopefully get basic customer service on their management agenda.

So what happened? I’m glad you asked.

I purchased a relatively expensive item as a present from one of the stores and was told that there is a 14 day return full cash refund policy - as long as the item is in new. This made the purchase an easy one for me to make, and I appreciated it.

Later that same week I realised that there was a sale that reduced the price of the item by about $20. Not a significant amount of money, yet as I within the 14 days so contacted the same store manager to query their policy and see if they would honour the discount and this is what she unashamedly said to me – and I am paraphrasing here:

“We are a retail business. It was your decision to purchase the item at the original price you paid. I have been directed by my Regional Manager not to give “you” [implied] a discount on this item (note that she obviously had a discussion with the regional manager prior to me calling).”

What was going on? Were they having private discussions about me? And if so, why?! It felt a bit freaky. I was certainly taken aback by her tone, but it got much worse when I asked whether I could still get a full refund on the item, and then purchase again at the new sale price. She responded that she was even not sure now whether I could get a cash refund for this particular item (a Mova Globe) as it was a bit complicated. Not knowing what she meant I reminded her of what she said when I originally purchased the item, ie the 14 days to refund. She then sent the most outrageous thing I’ve ever heard - again I paraphrase:

“I will honour a full cash refund as a gesture of goodwill, however we will record your name and details on our system and you will NOT be able to buy this item at the sale price at any of our stores. Our systems are such that we can track this. As I said previously we will not be giving you a discount on this item. I have been instructed to do this by my Regional Manager and there is nothing I can do.” She also refused to assist me in contacting the regional manager either by me calling her or to leave my phone number for her to contact me. It was flatly refused.

The realisation that I was blatantly being blacklisted by Australian Geographic and this targeted discrimination made me feel sick to the bottom of my stomach. It was no longer about the $20 nor about customer service good will. What would consumer affairs have to say about this?! Can we allow a retail store refuse to sell sale items to particular people, or of particular race or religion?! Is this the values of our society, and what does it say about Australian Geographic store values… or even just common sense? Dangerous territory if you ask me.

I then contacted another store just to check whether this was policy and I spoke to a store manager ([Store 1]) who could not believe a customer would be treated like this and she investigated on my behalf, which was good. I was called later and told that I could return the item and get the refund and the original manager wanted to apologise to me.

Separately I was told that the store manager at a different store closer to me ([Store 2]) would insist that I bring the original item before a partial refund could be given. This meant that he would refuse a partial $20 refund unless I picked up the actual item from the person I gave the gift to for some strange reason that I can only imagine that he was afraid I would get a full refund by providing an empty box and then doing a runner. It made no sense that if the company agreed to honour the discounted price and give me a partial refund why I would have to do bring the item in to his store. So I tried to call the [Store 2] store multiple times yet it just rang out each time. I have phone records showing that I tried to call the [Store 2] store all morning to try to resolve this – a dozen times in total.

So I called back the original store manager who then apologised for her initial behaviour and she agreed that I would only have to bring in the original receipt and the box with the barcode on it, which I did.

It gets worse.

I get to the store with the receipt and empty box in hand, the store manager apologises to me but says everything is good now, and she gives me the refund but multiple times reminds me that next time the store will not give any type of refund unless I provide the item. This is the company policy. She shouldn’t be doing this for me. They [Store 2] won’t do it again for me. And then she repeated all of this twice. I had to stop her by saying that I got the message, and then she said that she was instructed to tell me this by the [Store 2] store manager and to make sure I understood. I was being berated in front of a store full of customers and it was outrageous… but I decided to suck it in and not to react. To get my partial refund and receipt and to get out of there.

Not finished yet – it gets much worse.

The process of refunding the $20 is completed, and then she takes my original receipt away from it. She confiscated it, almost snatching it out of my hands. I said that I need the original receipt as I need proof of a transaction if the bank statement comes out and says a different amount, however I was happy for her to put a line through the original receipt and say refund on it, or anything else that she wanted to write. She became very aggressive and said that she would NOT be giving me the receipt and said, “We know you have purchased multiple Mova Globes,” with the clear implication that I was or would somehow be deceitful, or to try to steal, or something, if I were to be given the original receipt – even if marked as refunded.

Let’s not mince words. She was calling me, at best “untrustworthy”, and at worse, “a lying thief”. I could not believe it. She did all this, attacked my honesty and integrity, and she did this in front of a store with other customers.

I insisted to speak to her manager, and she refused by saying that she is the manager, and then I asked to speak to her manager again, and she refused. She then made multiple phone calls in front of me and finally spoke to someone who seemed to be a senior Australian Geographic manager and then she explained to them over the phone a completely distorted picture of what was actually happening in an obvious attempt to make me look unreasonable and difficult.

I asked to speak to the person she was speaking to over the phone, and she looked at me sternly and said that the person on the phone is probably too busy to talk to me! She didn’t even ask them. Then when I insisted in a projected voice so that the person on the phone could hear me, and I was told that they would NOT talk to me.

It had gone too far. I was outraged at this utter contempt, and said so. I said that she either give me my original receipt or a copy of it now, and let me speak to the person on the phone, or I’m leaving the store and I will never return. She gave me of dirty look, and I walked out.

I felt physically sick after this experience.

As a courtesy I called the second store manager ([Store 1]) who had originally been helpful and explained everything that had just happened. I made it clear that this has gone way too far, and that I’m over it completely. The problem is not with a single store manager, but clearly the unreasonable and perverted instructions she had been given. Even the [Store 2] store manager, who I didn’t get to speak to, seemed to want to impose unreasonable conditions on me – swings and roundabouts, for no other reason but to make me go through an unnecessary and unreasonable process. That is my view of what I was told, however I tried to contact him to get a better understanding of what the concern was, to no avail. I will never shop at the store again. I don’t trust the company, and I don’t want any more of their so called goodwill gestures, or anything else from them, except that I requested for a senior manager to call me to discuss what had happened and to give me an apology for my experience with their company… and if I did not receive the call in a reasonable time, then I would write a review of my experience in this forum and share it on social media.

Do you think a senior manager called or left a message for me today?! Obviously not.

Finally reading the other poor reviews in this forum for this company, and assuming that the experience I had is not an isolated one, I cannot see this company surviving 18-24 months without major changes in values and training. They just don’t get it! They have no idea what Customer Service actually means, and they have a deep distrust for their customers all the way up through to the management. The senior management could not even be bothered, or care less, to simply pick up the phone and call me. Now they can contact me here as I won’t be taking their calls. I have better things to do.

Great store service...shame about the online customer service – Have bought a number of items from The Australian Geographic store this year. Most were online but some were instore as well. been contacted by store staff to confirm or update online purchase deliveries. Again, all very friendly and helpful. For this, I would gladly award a five star rating.

However, this has all been tarnished by my experience with their online customer service. This started when I had cause to contact them (by email) a number of weeks ago regarding a $10 voucher code I had been issued (for my next purchase) not working. Over these last few weeks, they would email me (different support person each time) saying they had sorted the problem and I would have to email them back saying no they hadn't. During this time, I received another voucher code but it was the same as the first so it (obviously) didn't work. It's been nearly three weeks now and the time spent in trying to use the voucher and emailing them stating it doesn't work outweighs the value of the voucher. The last communication was about a week ago when they said they were deciding whether to continue to fix the problem or issue me with a new code. Choice was obvious to me. Can't wait any longer so have deleted the contents of my cart and bought elsewhere. On this basis I'm awarding them a one star rating.

Sorry store staff....your good work is being undermined by those working at the other end of your customer support emails.

UPDATE Have just received a replacement code which does work. Only took Customer Service four and a half weeks to do it. Terrible customer service!!!!

In shop rudeness by staff and customer escorted out by two security guards – I recommend that the reader kindly read what I am writing in full, or he or she could be run the risk of being escorted by security guards out of shop if they attempted to complain publicly inside the shop. This happened to me. On 20th December at approximately 1.15 pm at the Penrith store, with a two-year-old boy in tow, I chose an item and when… Read more

I went to pay for it at the cash register, I asked for a book I wished to purchase and I followed the salesperson to the book section in the store. Along the way there were two other staff members packing or unpacking things from a box. There was a bit of plastic on the floor next to the box on which I nearly slipped. The staff person unpacking the box said to me, "Can't you see that I blocked the lane with the box. You are not allowed to come along here." I said to her that I followed the salesperson. The same person again said to me, "I said you are not allowed to come here." I told her that the way she publicly spoke to me was reprehensible; that she should not be talking to customers in the manner she talked to be, and that I wished to lodged a formal complaint. I asked this same staff member who the manager of the shop was, and she told me that she was. I told her that, as a clinical psychologist, I suggest that she should be re-trained in customer relations as she was setting a bad example to her staff.

When I insisted that I was not prepared to exit the store without her full name so that I could file a formal complaint, she phoned the security guards who said that I have to leave the shop.

When I returned home I phoned "Customer Care" twice and was cut off on the two occasions. On the third occasion I told the person at "Customer Care" that I was giving them 2 days to tell me how they are going to deal with this incident to my satisfaction.

The next day I received the following email:

"Hi Leonard, again, we apologise for the terrible experience you've had at our Penrith store. With providing a pleasant customer experience our number one priority, the regional manager expresses his deepest apologies for what has happened. He has assured us that they will bring up this issue with [name removed] and make sure that this will not occur again. If there's anything we can do to help you, or answer any further concerns, please let us know.

Warmest regards, Customer Care."

My reply to this rude email, sent by a nameless person, was that I am not happy with the manner in which Australian Geographic treats its customers, and that I shall be making my complaint publicly.

So it appears that customers are not permitted to publicly lodge formal complaints against Australian Geographic. Or if they try to do so they run the risk of being escorted by security guards out of the shop as I was, regardless of whether you are alone or have children with you.

away in a darkened room.

We had no troubles returning the thermometer, but we have been having some problems with the projector. Firstly, they were difficult about returning it if it wasn't resalable in its original packing - it makes me shudder that they would resell this thing that doesn't actually work - and then, when they refunded it, they refunded the wrong amount. They rectified this, but have still not paid for return postage. They say that they will only refund return postage if the item is damaged. I would say that not working as one would reasonably expect (ie project onto walls in a dark room from further away than 50cm) would indicate that a product was a bit damaged... We will wait to hear back from them regarding the postage, but really, we are not going to order from here again. The products have been a bit crap, despite costing a reasonable amount of money ($70~ and $60) You'd probably be be better off going to your local $2 shop.

I ordered 3 products and after several emails and phone calls, wrong tracking info I finally received one product but without the refill rockets so not really much use! I have (after much pestering) received a refund for one product but it is now too late for me to source that elsewhere. One item is still unaccounted for. I can't believe a company that is well known in education circles can be some inefficient and in some cases downright dishonest.

They have not improved – I made a purchase online nearly 3 weeks ago. after about 5 days of not getting an email about whether my items have been despatched, i emailed them. Received a reply saying "sorry, the store should be despatching your items by today or tomorrow." that was it. another 4 days went by, still no email. so i emailed again. then received 2 emails… Read more

from 2 different AG stores, both saying that my items have been despatched (they both listed the same items). why is there no congruency amongst the stores?? terrible. and my tracking number was invalid!! then i get an email today from one of the stores saying that they don't have one of the items i purchased and i'll get a refund (which is great, but i would've preferred getting my item instead!). this email was after the email saying that my items had already been despatched!! i am so confused! i hope i get my items soon! but horrible online experience. AG, get your act online act together. Too many people are purchasing online now for you to slack in this area!!!

phone. I then emailed and the reply I received was to call a Shellharbour store in NSW ( I live in QLD) I spoke with the lady in store who said they don't stock that particular item anymore and it shouldn't be available for sale on the webpage. When I asked about a refund she said that I would have to arrange that with customer service. I have called customer service again but still no answer. I will never use this shop again and when inevitably the doors shut and they are put out of business they will have no one to blame but themselves.
