We bought a vehicle about a month ago advertised on Autotrader. The dealer hasn't sent the roadworthy to registration branch or sent us a copy They keep.giving.excuses. So we got a mechanic to have a look at the car and he failed it. Said it had been in an accident previously and not been repaired properly. We shall take the car back and get a refund. Won't ever buy a car there ever again
Autotrader Private Seller is HORRIBLE, and you have NO choice anymore but to use it! They hold your vehicle hostage. There is no way a buyer can contact you directly. I didn't get one legitimate offer from a real buyer. All I got were low ball offers from them in the 4,000 to 5,000 range, for my car that was worth 16,000. They are a total rip off… Read more
and a nightmare to deal with. I got many qualified buyers from Craigslist and Facebook Market Place, and sold my car with Facebook, which if FREE.

Facebook / Autotrader Scam – I followed up on a car listed on Facebook that was underpriced by about $5k. I thought it likely too good to be true (and it is). Facebook interaction screen shot attached. The person listing it was named [Name Removed] (with a profile created in 2022). I wrote and asked if it was diesel or petrol and got told to email someone else for… Read more

The very scammy emailI I received in response was from someone called [Name Removed]. All classic scam info. Something about deaths and deployments and the car having to be shipped to me but I pay auto trader or whatever. Don’t give scammers your money.
I have copy pasted below so you can compare your emails.
——— For sale is a 2015 Mitsubishi ASX priced at $6200. Here are some pics. This is a great model and needs nothing. Very Well maintained. - Regularly Serviced 79,788km . Starts and runs like a dream - It will come with a Roadworthy Certificate and Rego so you don't have to do the running around Registration. In perfect working condition, with nothing mechanically wrong - like new! Near New Tyres - no accident history, no stolen history & no money owing on the vehicle. It was my father's but he died 3 months ago. He drove it at his farm and never had any trouble with this vehicle. I sold almost all my father's stuff including the farm. The new owners didn't want to purchase the vehicle either as they don't need it and I put it up for sale. I Hate to sell it but it's not worth keeping insurance and paying storage fees for 18 months. I have to sell it in the next 10 days from now because I have a military career and my unit will be sent back overseas in Kuwait for the next 18 months to replace and help the troops scheduled to come home this year.
If you decide to buy it, you'll receive all the papers, owner manual, keys, a buy-sell contract already signed by me and all the documents notarized. The vehicle is located in Hobart, TAS 7000 and in case you want to purchase it will be shipped to your address with all expenses covered by me for inspection and test drive!
Then I said I’ll send a friend to test drive it in Tasmania and got this reply:
Hello,
As I told you in my first email the car is in a storage garage in Hobart, TAS and in case it gets sold I will take care of the shipping process. The shipping process will be done by a military carrier with full support from our Logistics Department so I don't have to pay anything for the shipping. It will take 3 days until the trailer will deliver the vehicle to your home address. All the documents you need for ownership; manuals and the bill of sale, etc.. will be provided along with the vehicle. Due to the fact that this is a large transaction I would like it to be handled by Autotrader which allows you to get the vehicle first, benefit of a 5 days inspection period and then I will get the payment. SO...ONLY AFTER you receive the vehicle and agree to keep it, Autotrader Insurance will release the payment to me, in this way we are both protected. So, this is not a blind transaction, you can physically see the vehicle before committing to buy and to eliminate any concerns. I need to know if you are still interested, so I can ask Autotrader to send you the details on this deal. If you are interested, please include in the next email your contact information for Autotrader (full name, shipping address and phone number), so we can start the procedure.
Thanks, hope to do business with you soon.
Definitely a scam. Don’t get involved.

ANYONE who has also fallen victim to this DISGUSTING scam (which seems like it’s many of you by the looks of it) please respond back to this, and give me your mobile number, the more people get on this the better! Not trustworthy – There is currently a vehicle advertised as being in Melbourne for sale, as a 1991 Toyota Landcruiser. The description lists it as a 2018 Landcruiser. On making a few simple checks I found that the vehicle is actually for sale for a considerable amount more by a reputable car dealer in QLD. They have nothing g to do with the fraudulent listing.… Read more
I contacted Autotrader via their App, but nearly 2 weeks later the fraudulent listing is still on their list. Absolutely not good enough when they know that the listing is attached to a scam.

The easiest and best car deal ever – Leo the sales person went above and beyond helping me purchase my car he made sure everything was as it should be and was very honest about everything I have never know a cardealer as honest as he is ,also I could not site the car my self so he is going to get a mechanic to look it over I would recommend Leo to anyone if you are after a car and an honest dealer Maria
Auto Trader Chermside – Huge thank you to the team at Chermside. Rob is fantastic. He is knowledgeable, relaxed, kind and genuine. I highly recommend him. The kind of guy you can trust. If you are looking to buy a car… this is the place to go! Thanks again Auto Traders Chermside!
Ripped Off – Bought my car online from Carlisle Ave, Minchinbury. The VZ Calais was advertised beautiful and silver. When delivered, I discovered they swapped out the wheels and rear spoiler for cheap black nasty second hand parts. I can understand if it didn't drive as expected but it should at least look like advertised. Then as expected, they gave me the run around with excuses. Keep away from these guys. THANK GOD I FOUND THIS SITE. SCAMMERS AROUND EVERY CORNER – I'd like to report a scam from [Name Removed] trying to sell an Audi 2018 A1 for 8K. The original post had a white Audi 2010 for sale. Her email is sketchy to start off with. in addition, she claimed I would transfer the funds over to auto-trader and have 5 days to test the car. If I agreed to "purchase the car" then the money would be sent over to her.
Autotrader-you guys need to do something about this, as this is happening constantly on your AU site.
I will NEVER use your service again.

But I Googled Hannah Chalmers (the person that emailed me) and productreview.com.au review post popped up "scammed by Hannah Chalmers" and noticed the same email style and free shipping. Big red flags! I also checked the email address company name and it doesn't exist. Person also provided Roadworthy Certificate provided, no need to get one, red flag! Most people write open to inspections and please arrange an inspection not push the fact they already did it for you! Plus always get an inspection ($100 from NRMA) and car report $40 fee is worth the peace of mind.

Again, they will hold and secure your money until you receive the car and will release the funds to me, Only after you decide to keep the car and register it into your name. If for any reason (The car has hidden damage or is not as described) You can reject the deal and when this happens Escrow will refund you in full. You can rest safe in the knowledge that Escrow is one of the most trusted and Secure Escrow Services across the globe. If you want to go ahead, please let me know your delivery details (Full name, Full address and Phone Number) In order to open an escrow transaction and declare you as buyer, after which they will contact you and explain the whole process in detail. Hi again,it`s a 2013 model sorry for the confusion, here are the pictures again,if interested first I want to inform you that the vehicle is located at a storage facility and that I wasn't planning to let it go, but I decided to sell it as I'm relocating up North because of my job. I had prearranged this sale through the Autotrader selling platform because I don't feel safe meeting with strangers. I had some bad experiences in the past, so I chose to hire them to take care of the selling process, therefore my presence isn't necessary. Dealing through Autotrader allows you to get the vehicle first and pay for it after it reaches you, considering these latest events with this horrible Covid19 pandemic it`s much safer for both of us. So if you are interested in seeing the vehicle and getting it for a test drive, please reply with your full name and your personal phone number and I will open a transaction case through Autotrader and they will contact you with all the necessary information about the transaction. Warm Regards
