the platform.
I listed my car for sale at $49,000. Almost immediately, the very next day, I received an email followed by a phone call from Carsales encouraging me to sell the vehicle through their “Instant Offer” service for approximately $35,000.
That offer was, in my opinion, completely disconnected from reality. RedBook valuations and comparable vehicles advertised in the market were materially higher. I was so shocked by the figure that I replied asking what kind of drugs someone would need to be taking to be delusional enough to consider $35,000 a reasonable offer.
What concerned me even more was what happened afterwards.
For approximately three days, my paid private listing generated virtually no meaningful enquiries. I eventually reduced the advertised price from $49,000 to $47,000, despite believing the vehicle was already reasonably priced based on comparable listings.
The entire experience left me with a very uncomfortable impression: Carsales charges private sellers to advertise their vehicles, while simultaneously operating mechanisms that attempt to acquire those same vehicles at substantially lower prices through Instant Offer.
That creates, at minimum, a perceived conflict of interest.
A private seller is paying Carsales to help expose their vehicle to potential buyers. At the same time, Carsales can contact that seller with a significantly lower acquisition offer, while its website also displays pricing indicators suggesting whether the seller's asking price is “above market”, “market price” or otherwise.
My question is: on what basis should a platform that is financially involved in acquiring vehicles also be effectively influencing the buyer's perception of what somebody else's privately owned vehicle is worth?
Carsales does not own my car. It has not maintained my car, inspected every aspect of its condition, understood the options, history, presentation, demand or circumstances surrounding the vehicle. Yet a pricing label displayed prominently to potential buyers can materially influence how they perceive the seller's asking price.
When the same ecosystem can potentially benefit from purchasing vehicles at lower prices, that structure deserves far greater transparency and scrutiny.
Ultimately, I found Facebook Marketplace far more effective. I received more genuine, higher-quality enquiries there and successfully sold the vehicle for substantially more than the Carsales Instant Offer — despite Carsales' pricing system effectively suggesting that my asking price was above market.
That outcome speaks for itself.
I paid Carsales for a private listing and walked away feeling that the platform was not genuinely aligned with my interests as the paying seller. Instead, I felt pressured by an extraordinarily low Instant Offer while Carsales simultaneously positioned itself as an authority on what constituted a “fair” market price for my vehicle.
I cannot say what Carsales' internal intentions or algorithms are, and I am not alleging conduct I cannot independently prove. I can only describe my experience and the conclusion it left me with.
From a consumer perspective, I believe the interaction between paid private listings, algorithmic price labelling and Carsales' own vehicle-acquisition services deserves much greater regulatory and consumer scrutiny.
For me, the Carsales listing was a waste of money. Facebook Marketplace produced better enquiries, a better experience and, most importantly, a substantially better sale price.

Seamus contacted me in the morning and had located the new vehicle I specified by the afternoon with a dealership close to where I live. He answered all my queries, I then felt comfortable continuing with the purchase. Seamus saved me a considerable amount of money compared to negotiating through a dealer myself. I would recommend Seamus and OnlineAuto to anyone who needs a new car.

After that they told me to go to the nearest rent a car company to exchange the car, when I got there they wanted me to pay another deposit. When I returned the car they refused to return the deposit claiming it was my fault. So now they will receive the insurance money that I paid plus the €200 deposit. They deliver cars in poor condition, show no concern for the customer and are rude when it suits them.

does not give permission to automatically sign people up for another platform. This feels like poor data-handling and questionable consent practices. Unsolicited emails are frustrating, time-wasting, and create a lack of trust in the brand. Opt-out should not be the first interaction a customer has with a service they never asked for. If you are going to share data across platforms, at least be transparent and ask for clear consent first. Until then, I can’t recommend Trucksales due to spam-like email behaviour.

resolve their mistakes. Days later, the price of the car dropped significantly, and GoodCar refused to adjust the price or offer a reasonable return option. They were happy to honour the 7-day return policy but wanted to charge me over +$3,000 in fees (including paying to return to Melbourne, despite having car depots nearer in Sydney), essentially eliminating any benefit of returning it. This felt like a deliberate attempt to deter me from exercising my consumer rights.
GoodCar's lack of accountability throughout this handover and following was appalling. They never once proactively offered compensation for the inconvenience caused or acknowledged the significant drop in the car's value due to their pricing decisions. I am now reporting them to the ACCC and strongly advise against buying from GoodCar.

continues to not be fit for purpose.
• Currently into 9th week of 3rd Service Visit, No ETA for diagnostics, no reasonable timeframe given for repair (still yet to be determined if possible at all)
•5 months of hell, into 13th week out of service. Yes, nearly 60% off the road.
• Customer Support claim their right to repair supersedes my ACL rights to a refund, given the heavily detailed list of faults that have occurred repeatedly below (these are also backed by photo and video evidence).
• Defects and Safety-System Failures -
• Since purchase, the vehicle has exhibited multiple serious defects, including drivability and safety-system failures that I previously reported to Polestar Australia’s Customer Support Team.
These include:
• SRS Airbag System Fault – book service.
• Emergency Call System Fault - book service.
• Seatbelt Occupant Alert Faults – no occupant in the seat.
• Vehicle placing itself into park whilst on the road by itself.
• Primary & HUD Displays blacking out and rebooting.
• HUD not displaying travelling speed at all.
• HUD Displaying incorrect speed limits – exceeding legal limits.
• SOS Service not available – book service.
• TPMS Fault – serious issue, book service.
• System Communication Fault, Pilot Assist deactivated. Find a place to park, select P to park. When parked system will restart. - did not reset.
• Reverse camera fault – Camera view is temporarily unavailable. Press home button to close.
The following timeline is for clarity of reporting faults -
• Vehicle delivered with PAK (Phone as Key) E-Sim and Google Services not working. Initially dealt with Salesperson from 27th November – 4th December 2025, finally escalated to Customer Support by Sales Manager.
• 4th – 12th December 2025 – car in for service as delivered without PAK, E-Sim and Google Services not working - following the service multiple additional faults occurred and were reported. No service reports provided.
• Multiple emails sent to Polestar Customer Support since 12th December 2025 to 23rd February 2026, these included photos of faults and descriptions of when it happened.
• 27th January 2026 - 12th February – car in for service - no definitive update on process of diagnostic received.
• 13th February – advised verbally by Customer Support vehicle would be receiving Processor/Software update following week – (16th-20th Feb, no confirmed return date) – no email received as requested.
• 20th February 2026 vehicle returned. - Customer Support advised vehicle was “Extensively tested” before returning to me. No service reports provided.
• 23rd February 2026 – Report HUD not displaying speed, Customer Support advised performing soft reset and report back if further issue. A soft rest isn't a fix, it's a workaround.
• 24th February 2026 – All displays blacked out and rebooted whilst driving on road, then additionally whilst driving on Motorway -SRS, Emergency Call, assisted driving faulted and then re-faulted when attempting to reverse into driveway, also reverse camera faulted. 3 separate faults with 1 hour, all affecting the safety of the vehicle.
• 24th February – vehicle parked in driveway, refuse to drive as unsafe.
• 27th February 2026 – vehicle picked up on tow truck and returned for service.
• 27th February – 15th March (5 weeks plus) vehicle is awaiting a “TCAM” for further diagnostics – incorrect part ordered, no current timeframe on replacement to allow further diagnostics.
• Letter of Demand for Full Refund refused as Polestar claim they have the right to repair. This is not a number of minor issues. It’s a continuing series of systemic failures.
• Reasonable Questions being asked are not answered, no reasonable timeframe is being given for diagnostics, repair or return.
• Under the ACL, a major failure occurs when:
• The product is unsafe. - several time safety systems have faulted • The product is substantially unfit for purpose. - this is a given for me. • The product cannot be repaired within a reasonable time - 3 times and more than 10 weeks and still no reasonable timeframe being given. • A reasonable consumer would not have purchased it had they known the issues. - this is obvious. • The product has multiple recurring faults. - provable multiple times documented and Polestar advised.
Buy at your own peril.

insisting the issue was not warranty related they kept the ute for 5 weeks and returned it claiming a major component was not covered and it also come back with 420 kms on the odometer that wasn't there before giving it to them to fix. We then discovered it had been in a bender/crash due to a dent which fortunately my car insurance were able to cover as they deemed the car yard liable. During this whole time the interaction with the car yard staff member was awful. He is aggressive, extremely dishonest and has an ego with zero accountability. You have been warned.
