Just thrown it in the bin – I finally threw it in the bin after it wouldn't start. I thought this mixer was going to do a good job for me but not so. Within a few weeks the silver started to lift even though I cleaned it and dried it well after each use, I couldn't believe it could do this so soon. I never made bread in it because the first time I tried it seemed to… Read more

struggle and I didn't want it to burn out. So I mixed cakes and biscuits, and icings, and that's all. It was heavy and I only used it infrequently because I hated lifting it out of the cupboard. I didn't have any problems with the attachments and the bowl was adequate for cakes and biscuits. So over the years I've had it, I would have used it maybe 30 times for light foods, that 's not exaggerating either. It is the biggest waste of money I have ever spent. Good riddance.

Worked good for 22 months – Sent it to Breville in the original packaging (including the styrofoam). Received a call to tell me I sent them the wrong mixer. I sent them a BEM800 instead of a BEM820. Explained I had purchased the "best" model available straight from Breville because the other one burned up. If it isn't right it is their fault. I was told again I was wrong, it… Read more

wasn't the right machine. They need a different receipt (not sure why they couldn't work off the date code from manufacture build). Told them that was the right receipt, it was the machine Breville sent me. They even asked what colour because silver wasn't available. Breville wanted to know what colour my other machines were, I told her silver!?! I was called a liar without the actual word liar. I sent the wrong one, I didn't get that one from Breville and so on....... So I scanned my owners manual to show them the BEM820 is a BEM800 with additional bowl. I received some phoney platitudes. We are fixing it and sending it back. Well DUH of course you are. What are you going to do about me being insulted and called a liar? "Well I mentioned it to my manager, I can't do anything. I did ask my manager to let them know the BEM820 is a BEM800" "Well tell your manager I am extremely upset, I am not a liar and I am still shaking I am so agro" Oh I forgot the "Metal" gears apparently shredded. Years ago I would have been using the mixer 3-4 times a week. The last few years I am lucky if I use it every 2 weeks. It was billed as a "commercial" machine rated for 1.5-2kg of bread dough 2-3 times a week. I use it for pizza dough which is a very soft dough and only make it on average 1-2 days a month. There is absolutely no reason, other than a substandard build, that metal gears should shred in less than 5 years unless you are using it all day long in a commercial environment. Oh wait it's a commercial machine, hummm. Which I am not, I am a granny, occasionally making bikkies for grandchildren. There has to be a reason why they have discontinued making this model. So between the heinous customer service calling me a liar, forcing me to prove to Breville they actually made this machine, and the poor build quality we are done. My husband says no Breville will ever enter our house again. That says a lot since I use waffle irons-2, sandwich toasters-4, countertop ovens-2, tea kettles-3, toasters-4, mixers-2(always keep a back up if one is a Breville), blenders-2, food processors-big and small-2each, food dehydrators, microwaves-3, coffee machines-3, popcorn machines-1, slow cookers-1, and I am sure much more as I have a guesthouse for family and a separate billiards room with a kitchenette. So to say Breville is gone and replacing everything Breville we already have, is saying a lot. I need to ask him if that includes Kambrook since they appear to be linked.

Upgraded machine – I used use a BEM 810 (700watt) model and had that for a number of years @5), but was finding that for bread and some of the thicker recipes that the motor didn't quite cut it and was starting to smell iffy under a heavy load. So, I upgraded to the BEM820 and it was the right decision. The smaller bowl is useful for smaller mixes - like beating… Read more ·  1

yolks for a curd, etc, but it is the bigger bowl, or should I say the extra bigger bowl (I kept the old large bowl) that makes this truly bliss to use.

I know of no stand mixer that will beat hard butter without struggling, but softened and the Breville is great! I've never had a problem with either the BEM810 or 820 twin if I followed simple logic and softened ingredients before adding them.

I made 6 heavy fruitcakes this Christmas and the machine had no problems even given the large volumes of butter, sugar, flour and the like. That's truly where the extra bowl came in handy, and I'd advise (fwiw) that if you buy the extra bowl for large volumes, you get a much better mix of your ingredients - by working in two or more batches.

If you make large volumes of heavy rye bread, etc, then the new Breville with the pyrex bowl (1200w) may be a better option. I did look at it, but the base for the bowl to lock on is NOT the same size as the BEM 810/820. So any benefit of keeping bowls is effectively lost. Also, and this is just a personal observation, I have issue with glass bowls when I'm cooking. I'm not clumsy, but even a hardened glass bowl can chip and then I would have to discard my ingredients. The metal bowl is easy, tough and even with knocks, I've never managed to dent one...not that I've actively tried to.

Excellent mixmaster!! – After 26 years, my trusty Sunbeam has finally been replaced. I use my mixmaster about 3 times every week, sometimes more. So I was really careful about choosing a new one. to having something that large staying out on my kitchen benchtop, either, So I looked at everything else on the market. This Breville model came out tops. It's a lot heavier than my Sunbeam, but it's still easy for me to put away each time. I've only used mine for making cakes so far, and it's been excellent. Even when the butter isn't quite soft enough, this mixer can handle it (I start off on a slow speed, then turn it up as the butter softens), whereaas my Sunbeam would send little butter splatters all over the kitchen! It's also much faster at mixing and beating, and I never need to scrape down the sides, which is just as well because the bowl is too narrow for me to use the spatula anyway! So that's my only gripe. My Sunbeam bowl was wide enough to sift flour straight into it (using a sifter), but this new bowl is much too narrow for that, so I sift my flour in batches on a plate and tip it into the bowl. Works fine this way. Beware of cracking eggs straight into the bowl for the same reason. I'm pretty sure that the KitchenAid's bowl is also quite narrow. One thing that I really like is the extra bowl and beater, so I don't have to wash the beater if I'm beating egg whites after using the large bowl. Overall, I would recommend this mixer, especially if you can get it on sale!

BEM800.. This has unfortunately been the death of it.. Well maybe not the death. With some assistance from the babies, Today (appropriately Mothers Day 20202 under Covid-19 conditions) the machine was disassembled. Given the work it has done the gears and bearings are in excellent condition, with exception of the 17 tooth spur gear which has 5 broken teeth. Surprisingly the mating gear is in excellent condition and as mentioned so are all other components.. Now where can I get this gear.. Breville. Can you be of assistance here.. I only need the part.

Good quality for the price – I bought it about 6 months ago and been using it 2 times a week since then. I haven't had any issues yet, but had a bit of noise coming from the motor lately which isn't too bad. Very good, except the design – It's been 6 months using the appliance and I must say it is useful. light as stainless, and easy to keep it clean. Motor starts to make noisier sound than the first month but still not that loud. I use once or twice a week for bread dough, cookies or cakes. Design is not my taste, but except it, a keeper.  Show details

Not happy, Jan – 1/ I bought it two years ago for bread making. I make two 3/4 kg mixes twice a week. Despite the recipe book having a 1kg bread recipe it labored early on. It then overheated and stalled. Now it is not fit for any purpose. It smells and stops. In my opinion the gearing is wrong for the task. 2/ I ended up wiring the large bowl to the base to… Read more

stop it free wheeling. The hold-down studs are inadequate.

3/ The scrapper hook for the small bowl is useless for doughs. It just plasters the mix around the bowl.

4/ The food entry chute for the small bowl is just a mouse hole. I modified the plastics to a usable size.

5/ It will whisk and also make biscuit dough in the large bowl. For what it does any cheap mixer will do.

For bread making I would not buy any similar looking machine.

Mixer, Scraper, Whisk, Accessories BREAK – I would suggest you avoid Breville mixing machines. My scraper broke in the first month of use. The whisk has broken - a piece is detached at the crown. The on/off dial is faulty requiring several attempts to get it to turn on.

The machine vibrates on it’s hinges and rocks when in use. It looks sturdy and is heavy, but it is NOT ☹️ In the past I used Kenwood. I’ll use them in future.

Nice machine, but! – Breville Food Mixer We purchased the Breville food mixer as the design is similar to the commercial Machines such as Hobart and Peerless where the beater, whisk and dough hook fit into the planetary head in a similar manner and being very secure. handle at the front. The stainless-steel mixing bowl is another plus. In fact, the whole design of the machine looks good.

After using the mixer for just over two years

the motor started "hunting" this means the beater speeds up and slows down. I took the machine to be repaired. The company contacted Breville to ask for a warranty but Breville didn't want to know. I asked the repair man not to touch the machine as I will make do. An additional quirk has now arisen, I don't use the self-scraping beater as I prefer to hand scrape batter from the side of the mixing bowl, sometimes the machine does not want to re-start after scraping down so I have now to switch off at the mains and switch on again for the machine to operate.

Our first food mixer was a Kenwood Chef and I purchased it second hand. It came with all the attachments, Liquidizer, Mincing attachment, Juice Extractor etc. This machine was with us 40 years. No prizes then for guessing which food mixer we will purchase when the Breville finally pops its clogs.

Died Young – Lasted just 2 years. I bought this in May 2015 (on the Gold Coast), mainly because i couldn't afford the competitors and there was a cash back offer, plus wasn't physically able to do the kneading and whisking it was supposed to be able to. From the start i was disappointed. Now i wish i'd saved a bit longer, because it's out of warranty and… Read more

frankly dangerous - when you put it on Pause, the beater/hook keeps moving, or moves suddenly from a full stop. Even when the button on the arm's pushed in ready to lift the beater out of the bowl. It seems to be a short - i can see the light bar flashing and making zzt sounds. If i push the dial in to the mixer a bit, it stops. It's happened quite suddenly. I've never overheated it, it's never been so overloaded it stops, in fact it's had a pretty easy life. Before this latest problem, my main gripe with it was "it doesn't scrape the bowl as advertised" (making mayonnaise - or anything which starts needing a small quantity of something, like two egg yolks whisked to start - was impossible, despite me having a small bowl as well as the large, and i bought a medium one from Target). Also i bought it without realising top weight of mix is 600g (that's one small loaf of bread). Apart from that it was just a cheaper version of one of the GOOD mixers (better than a $20 powered hand whisk, but for the price not great). Okay for cake mixes or meringue, but the dough hook is more a decoration, kneading bread with it means staying and watching, as dough tends to work up the bowl, so i'm forever pausing it to get the dough back in the bowl. It's also very heavy, not really easy to clean, lots of crevices. Not worth the money - i could have bought a bread maker and a small mixer - for cake mix to meringue - for less. And they might have lasted longer!

Not Happy! – Initially thought this machine was a life saver until last week. 1 year 6 months old gear started to get really noisy! loudest Bang sound EVER! and it tripped the switch in my meter box. Took the mixer back today, repairer has advised that the circuit needs to be replaced

3. Circuit to be replaced (waiting on parts, won't have my mixer for possibly 2 weeks)

Because the repairer felt sorry for me, he gave me his older model BEM to use in the mean time at no cost, but seriously??? I paid $370 for this product, it should NOT be having such MAJOR issues within 2 years of the warranty. And as I see from other reviews the gear issue is common and a fault within the product!

I'm thankful that the above mentioned issues have been covered under warranty, but still... Paying so much for such a product for it only to last 1.5 years? Makes me wish I bought another brand.

What to do when it dies outside of the 2 year warranty Breville? huh?

The stainless steel bowl has a nice, easy to hold handle and is light. I did purchase a second smaller bowl (on special 50% off) which is great. It has two D shaped handles. It is easy to clean. Even though it says the attachments are dishwasher safe I would not put them in there, just as easy to hand wash. Definitely recommend this to anyone!

Overall I love this mixer so glad I purchased this one over the KitchenAid.

Serendipitously it seems, I received a voucher from JB Hi Fi, which enabled me to buy the Breville Scraper for a very nice price - $189. Bargain. I couldn't refuse.

So I have ended up with a silver Breville and it is very nice too. I have only used it a few times but so far so good. It has a nifty timer arrangement on it so it counts down the time I spend mixing or I can set it so it switches off when the time is up. I like that. I like the big blade beater too and attaching and detaching is very easy.

Whipping cream though was a bit of a disaster. I ended up with more cream on me than in the bowl and I have resorted to breaking out the hand held mixer for this job. Maybe it was me more than the mixer though.

I am very happy with my food mixer even though I haven't tested it to its limits. However, I have no doubt that it could handle a lot more than I ask of it.
