enamel-coated attachments are a massive disappointment. After less than two years of standard, manual-compliant care (top-rack dishwasher cleaning, which the manual explicitly states is safe), the enamel coating began flaking off the dough hook on non-contact surfaces. Because this is a food-contact accessory, flaking material is a major safety concern. When I contacted KitchenAid support, the experience was incredibly frustrating. They repeatedly hid behind internal corporate policy and played the blaming game. When the eventually agreed, the completely ignored statutory consumer rights and refused to escalate the issue to a manager. I was eventually forced to pay a $50 "upgrade" fee out of pocket just to get a safe, stainless steel replacement hook. If I wasn't already heavily invested in the KitchenAid accessory ecosystem, I would have walked away from the brand entirely. Do not buy into the "family heirloom" marketing. If you haven't bought into this ecosystem yet, look elsewhere.

I'm doing a whole lot more, have even managed to produce some goodies that don't elicit eye-rolls from my teenagers. High accolades indeed.

So am making a heap more. Usual stuff like brownies and cupcakes. Soooo much easier making gingerbread with this, it used to kill my wrists and my hand mixer was of no use. Meringue is still something I'm trying to master, more research needed. Purely operator inexperience there though.

Christmas gingerbread house is amazing. We could all end up the size of actual houses if I keep going!!

It's quieter than I thought it would be, super easy to attach/detach the mixxy thingos (again, not a huge amount of baking in my history).

I love the handsfree-ness of it. Chuck the stuff in and let her do her magic. Cleans up like a dream.

I did struggle a bit using the guard thing that goes over the top to stop me spraying aerosolised flour all over my kitchen haha

Just loses a star because the melty softening feature didn't really work that well for me. I just gave up and bunged the butter in the microwave. Even the chocolate, went back to my old method of blasting it in 10 second bursts in the microwave.

As I have made this recipe, family one, for the last 65 years, yes I am ancient, I left the machine on the kitchen counter and imagine my surpise when it simply turned itself off after 5 minutes. I immediately thought ooppss! has it overheated? Nope the machine was still cold as a ..... ..... ... Checked that everything was attached and that it was not vibrating and yes and no. but as for kneeding dough you will need to do that by hand as this machine just is not capable of that. If you want to make complete bread dough from start to Finnish the spend more money on a larger machine. However this mixer is perfect for cakes, beating and whipping and general mixing. The speeds are just not geared lie enough to do bread dough kneeding. But not will mix the dough up to that stage. The speeds are 1-6 though 1 is not all that slow. The motor is really quite good and I've used it many times over 1 year. Still works as new. The bowl is top quality, and the base adjusts so as to auto rotate when beating. So all in all for such a small cost pretty hard to go past this if you like retro styling.

Apparently what I described was not normal and replacements parts for it have been ordered! For a hardly used new machine, costing $529, to say that I am disappointed is an understatement. My first Kenwood lasted 20 years, the 2nd hand was virtually new and lasted 20 years, the third 2nd hand, 7 years. I treated myself to a brand new one this time. I am now without a mixer, awaiting a part and I am truly miffed. I feel that I have been sold a dud and that the Kenwood quality has slipped.

I would really like a machine to use while this is brand new machine is awaiting parts and this could be no time soon.

An amazing machine. Extend the basic Ankarsrum mixer to create endless possibilities with the many different appliance attachments that can be… Read more

purchased with it. The main Ankarsrum mixer is very strong and robust and very stable when mixing heavy doughs and icing or buttercream mixtures compared to other stand mixers. It comes with two bowls. One large, stainless steel bowl where the dough roller and dough hook are used, along with the scraper attachment which helps scrape the sides and move the dough together. The roller can be pushed towards the middle to help mix your mixture to come together more quickly and then left to continue to knead. The stainless steel bowl turns and the rollers/ beater runs along the inside edge of the bowl, also turning. The smaller, clear bowl is used for beating and whipping softer mixtures. Here the bowl has a central pin where the whisks are attached and spin while the bowl remains still, like in a traditional stand mixer. In this bowl you can use the single wire beater which is great for cookie or thicker soft doughs. The multi wire whisks are for beating liquids, cake recipes, eggs and egg whites. The Ankarsrum mixer works differently to a regular stand mixer, but with some use you easily begin to understand and become more familiar with how to use it. Despite using a traditional stand mixer for years, I really enjoy and prefer the Ankarsrum over the popular American brand stand mixer that I have and still love. The Ankarsrum has a separate dial to turn the mixer on to run continuously and by turning further, you can activate the timer for the desired amount of minutes that you would like to keep it running and then turn off automatically. The dial on the right controls the speed. The instructions are very useful in understanding on what speed you should be using for different recipes, eg. heavy doughs are always mixed on the lower 3 speeds. The Stainless steel bowl also comes with a lid that slides into the bowl and helps retain heat and moisture to help when leaving doughs to rise or resting in the fridge. There's also a spatula included. All the other appliances can be purchased separately and many attach to a different part of the machine by turning it, onto its side. I have found the Ankasrum to be more quieter than my other stand mixer. It appears to be quality built with a lovely finish and many choices of colours available. I highly recommend this mixer which I'm sure you will enjoy and will last for years.

does and then some. Recipes for any other thermal cooking machine can be easily converted (I got heaps of tips from the Hotmix Tips and Recipes Facebook group). The higher temperature range means that caramelising can be done. The degree by degree and wait temp function (ie. It can stop cooking or cook at a certain temperature after a temperature has been reached) are amazing for jams, custards, egg sauces and so on. It can knead unsupervised too unlike the thermomix. And you can save recipes as you go straight into the machine. The lack of scales makes no difference - I either pop the bowl on scales I have and measure into it, or if I need to be careful about putting too much of an ingredient in (as with liquids you can't just take it out if you poor too much in) I use a separate bowl. Oh and bamboo baskets or normal steamer inserts fit on top of the machine as a varoma replacement without taking more cupboard space. If you're going to fork out the money for a thermomix, these machines are definitely worth considering. It has all the pros of a thermomix, plus is programmable, a bigger temperature range and beget temperature abilities. Not as many recipes, but there's so many thermomix recipes online that work too for extra ideas. Plus after a while you get so used to the machine you can convert your own recipes just like you can with a thermomix.

So a poor design, particularly for using a spatula on the sides while the machine is running (dangerously impossible), or for adding ingredients during the mixing process (very awkward & difficult). The machine is robust, and presents well and is easy to clean. But I miss my old cafe series mixer and this new style is a backwards step. Also when the bowl came off it kept spinning with the kneading hook banging around and my wife panicked ,but I quickly switched off the power, whew!Video attached. Apart from this issue its a powerful mixer and worked really well as the motor and transmission etc must be very good. I am just disappointed thats all plus the time it will take for the unit to be sent to NSW then assessed.Eta by JB Hi Fi staff was upto 6 weeks but I am thinking might be more due to the timing ie near Christmas.

Black KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer

What is a stand mixer?

A stand mixer, also known as a bench mixer or benchtop mixer, is a high-end electric food mixer for your kitchen. It's made up of a fixed stand with a lever-operated arm on top, which you secure attachments like beaters onto. These attachments lower down into a mixing bowl that houses your ingredients.

Is a stand mixer worth it?

Considering that stand mixers are the most high-end food mixers available, investing in one can be expensive. It might be worth it, however, if you’re a home baking aficionado who bakes at least twice a week.

Your baking repertoire should incorporate more than just cakes, cookies and pastries, though. Unless you’re working with these lighter batters frequently and in large batches, a cheaper hand mixer should be sufficient.

Since stand mixers can handle heavy consistencies, they’re best paired with bakers who need help mixing tougher ingredients. This includes bread dough, pasta and pizza dough and buttercream frosting.

The main advantage of stand mixers is that they can mix and knead tough ingredients for baking that would be too tiresome to mix manually or with a hand mixer or stick mixer. They're suited to enthusiastic bakers who bake a wide variety of foods at least twice a week.

Pros
Can tackle a wide variety of baking tasks: Thanks to their powerful motors, stand mixers can mix light cake batter and cookie dough, as well as thicker consistencies like bread dough and buttercream frosting. You can also make savoury foods like sausages and pasta, with the right attachments.
Set-and-forget: The hands-free capability of a stand mixer means you won’t waste time standing around supervising. This allows you to tick off other tasks on your list, like weighing out ingredients.
Less labour intensive: If you’re tired of your hand cramping up when you mix heavy ingredients with dogged determination, a stand mixer can ease the burden.
Cons
Stand mixers are expensive, and their premium performance is matched by a premium price tag.
Bulky, heavy build means you’ll need a decent amount of space, either on your kitchen benchtop or in a nearby cupboard.
Cleaning process is fiddly: Multiple attachments and detachable parts mean that cleaning your stand mixer can be a time-consuming hassle.

Why are stand mixers so expensive?

Stand mixers are more expensive than other electric mixers because they’re designed to handle heavy-duty kitchen tasks. A good stand mixer will tend to be heavy, large and durable. For example, models with a solid metal construction and stainless-steel bowl should last several years, but the trade-off is that you’ll pay more handsomely for one at the start.

You can also buy cheap stand mixers that range in price from $69-$300, however you’ll most likely find that benchtop mixers that have been awarded higher ratings tend to be pricier.

A stand mixer may also be more affordable if you choose a smaller mixing bowl capacity, a lower number of mixing speeds, and a model without planetary mixing action. But finding the best stand mixer for you will ultimately depend on your unique baking needs. Scroll down to experiment with the filters on the left hand side of the page to find out more.

Hand mixers · See All

Cuisinart hand mixer

These mixers consist of a handheld unit that houses a motor, and has removable beaters attached to it. You hold the mixer over a bowl of your own choosing, and manually move around the beaters until achieving your desired consistency.

A hand mixer may be a more sound buying decision if you’re a beginner or a weekend baker.

Not only are they more affordable than stand mixers, they're equal to the task when it comes to mixing lighter batters in small quantities. This work well preparing ingredients for desserts with thinner textures like cakes, pancakes and mousses, as well as whipping cream and beating egg whites.

Pros
Lightweight and compact design makes hand mixers a suitable choice if you have a small kitchen or limited cupboard space.
More manual control is available, as you can control the trajectory of the beaters and personally ensure everything is evenly mixed. You can also choose a suitably sized bowl.
Cheaper than a stand mixer, which makes them easier on your wallet. Hand mixers range in price from $39 to $179, whereas most entry level brand-name models of stand mixers start at around $200.
Cons
More time consuming than a stand mixer, as you have to put in the grunt work to make up for the less powerful motor. Hand mixers lack set-and-forget functionality, so you can’t turn them on and walk away.
Not powerful enough to mix heavier, thicker ingredients that a stand mixer could make easy work of, like dough and icing.

Factors to consider before buying a benchtop mixer

Build quality

A reliable stand mixer can last you several years, if it's built durably. The heavier a stand mixer is, the better. This will prevent it from creeping across the counter or rattling noisily when mixing ingredients. However, it shouldn’t be so heavy that you can’t pick it up – you don’t want to throw your back out trying to pack it away.

Generally, the most durable stand mixers are those with a solid metal body and a stainless steel bowl. Glass bowls and ceramic bowls are also available. While they provide a refined aesthetic, they won’t have the same longevity as a stainless steel bowl and may also be harder to replace.

Bowl capacity

Kenwood Chef XL Titanium

The size of the bowl is important, as it determines how much food you can prepare. Here's a rough guide:

  • Less than 4 litres: If you regularly bake for a two-person household, opt for a small bowl like the 3.3L KitchenAid Mini Mixer.
  • 4-5 litres: This is a standard bowl size that can accommodate a batch of spontaneous Sunday cookies, or larger batch baking.
  • Over 5 litres: A large stand mixer could be worth it if you like baking up a storm. The 6.7L Kenwood Chef XL Titanium (pictured, left) is up to the task.

Stand mixer attachments

Standard attachments

Standard Stand Mixer attachments

These usually come included with a stand mixer.

  • Flat beater: The standard beater used to combine ingredients with a light to heavy consistency (pictured, top left).
  • Dough hook: Useful for kneading dough for bread, pasta and pizza (pictured, top right).
  • Balloon whisk: Used to add air into foods to make them light and fluffy. It's great for whisking egg whites, whipping cream, and making sauces (pictured, bottom centre).

Extra attachments

KitchenAid pasta roller

Many stand mixers offer a range of extra attachments that you can purchase at an additional cost. For example, KitchenAid attachments are available aplenty, and include a pasta roller (pictured, left), ravioli roller, meat grinder, slicer and shredder, spiraliser, food processor, ice cream bowl and a citrus juicer.

In theory, this means that your stand mixer can replace other kitchen appliances, but keep in mind attachments can be pricey. For example, the KitchenAid’s food processor attachment alone sells for $359.

Speed settings

You can usually choose between around 3-12 speed settings, but for the majority of mixing tasks, 3 should be sufficient. These include a slow speed for kneading, a light setting for cakes and pastries, and a higher speed for aerating foods like cream.

Storage and aesthetics

Since stand mixers can be bulky, it’s important to think about where the appliance would live in your kitchen. If you don’t have enough counter space, consider whether there’s a nearby cupboard it could fit into.

Aesthetics play a part if your stand mixer is going to be a semi-permanent fixture on your counter. Luckily there are plenty of décor-friendly mixers that can spruce up the look of your kitchen. For example, the KitchenAid Artisan stand mixer comes in an artfully revived retro red. Or you can opt for a classic black or white mixer to go with everything.

Noise level

Since they’re the most powerful kitchen mixers available, stand mixers can be noisy. If you are particularly worried about noise, or if you do your baking in the early hours when everyone else is asleep, it may be worthwhile to shop in-store to test the noise level of a prospective model before buying.

Ease of cleaning

Stand mixers are trickier to clean than handheld mixers or stick mixers. They have several detachable parts and the mixer will need to be taken apart and cleaned after each use. While some parts may be dishwasher safe (like those made from stainless steel), others risk being damaged if they’re not hand washed. Price

This can range anywhere between $149 for the Kmart Diecast Stand Mixer to $1299 for the top-of-the-line KitchenAid Pro Line stand mixer. Most branded stand mixers (i.e. those excluding bench mixers from ALDI, Kmart or Target) start at around $200.

Extra features:

  • Electronic speed sensor: Automatically adjusts the mixer’s speed based on the weight of the ingredients inside the bowl
  • Height-adjustable attachments: Allows beaters or other mixer attachments to reach low ingredients when there’s only a small quantity in the bowl.
  • Planetary mixing action: A stand mixer with this mixing action rotates and counter-rotates around the bowl to reach as much of the bowl as possible. This thorough trajectory helps evenly mix all ingredients.
  • Scraper beaters: Made with a silicone or rubber edging, these are like a blend of spatula and beater. They wipe down the sides while beating, so raw ingredients don’t get stuck. Also sometimes called a flexi-beater.
  • Splash guard: This usually goes on top of the mixing bowl to prevent ingredients from splashing out over the rim. It can consist of a lid with an open space for the beaters to fit, or a hinged flap.
  • Tilt-head design: This allows you to lift up the mixer head to easily access ingredients after mixing is complete. The alternative is a bowl-lift stand mixer, which can be more fiddly.
  • Suction feet: These help your stand mixer grip onto the kitchen counter more firmly, helping to ensure it doesn’t rattle around.
  • Timers: Although uncommon, these can be helpful for more advanced recipes that incorporate the use of a stand mixer for a specified period of time.
