I bought this machine to replace my Barista Express (which has been falling apart on me gradually over 5 years), so I'm uniquely placed to offer a comparison if you are trying to decide between models. Know that any of these machines are probably going to die within 3-5yrs, and its a bit of luck which component dies as to whether the machine is… Read more

still usable.. and its unlikely a repair is worth while.. so although I am a fan of the Pro... there is definitely merit in buying the Express version because the $ value is superb.

But.. there are many reasons why you might choose the Barista Pro.. the biggest ones are it has a better grinder (vs the express which was a bit crude and got out of alignment from time to time), the Pro also heats up near instantly which is a luxury but still nice.. but more importantly its a more even heat which in theory (and according to reviewers) means less randomness when you pull a shot.. its just a better machine...

I stressed out when I first used the Pro, because a) the grouphead wont even turn beyond a few degrees.. I dunno why Breville make their machines so tight to use, but you don't actually need to turn it far, just if its snug its fine.. it will loosen up over the years.. but also when I first started making coffee my coffee was coming out terribly.. like.. even after dialling everything in, only a small volume was coming out.. I thought my machine was defective.. BUT... here is the cool thing about the pro.. you can manually adjust the volume of water that comes out when you click the 1cup or 2cup button.. so actually you can tweak things yourself which I have now done and feeling great! However that process even for a relatively experienced home barista took me quite a few hours and youtube videos.. a bag of beans getting it wrong.. but I have it now.. but if you are totally new, this could definitely be a barrier for you.. but it can be overcome if your heart is in it =)

Overall very happy.. just need to see what the longjevity is like, the more electronics on a machine the more risk I feel that things can fail.. but having had fancy brand machines in the past, I am very much a fan of the Breville range.

Good while it lasts. But I’d expect longer than 3.5 years. Had the flow meter fail at the 3 year mark. We paid for it to be replaced at an authorised Breville Dealer (organised through Breville). The new flow meter was only given 3 months warranty and a 6 month guarantee and it failed a week after 6 months. Now to either fix AGAIN or just go… Read more

with a completely different and new machine. But of a shame. All our small kitchen appliances are Breville but none have had this short of a lifespan.

Could not be happier – I've had my Breville Barista Pro for 12 months. I don't buy coffee out anymore. Paid for itself in 4 months. I've even thought of opening a Cafe the coffee is that good. Show details

Breville barista pro, the steep learning curve – I purchased my product about 4 years ago. This was my first ever home espresso machine purchase, so there was a steep learning curve. It took a while to “dial” in the machine to get the grind right and as a novice there was some frustrating moments. I think I used half a kilogram of beans to get this right. But since then the unit has performed… Read more

faultlessly. I love that the Breville barista pro tells me when a “flush” or “descale” is required. I perform this religiously when prompted using the recommended products. Descaling is a necessary evil and is time consuming. However the LCD menu steps you through the process with ease. Now that I have my machine dialled in with my secret blend of beans, I am enjoying beautiful flat whites every morning. The espresso shots have an excellent crema perfect for my espresso martini’s. I experience perfect extraction of espresso every time, I love the instant start up. My only negatives are the hot water function which does not seem hot enough despite selecting maximum in the menu. You cannot get a cup of hot water hot enough to brew a tea bag. I have also recently experienced poor steaming function for the milk, although in all honesty this is most likely due to guests who were not purging and cleaning the stream wand after use. Despite my endeavours of descaling and soaking, I have not been able to rectify this problem. Time for a new machine, it will be a Breville. Pro: fast heat up, excellent extraction, perfect grind ( once dialled in) Cons: hot water not hot enough to brew a tea bag.

Do not buy – Absolute waste of money, worked well for about a year then the problems started. Was in and out service under warranty for a good 6 months. Once the warranty ended I tried to get it fixed privately and nobody could find what was wrong with it. I ended up throwing it in the bin and upgrading to the Breville dual boiler. If you have the money to spend on the barista pro in highly recommended you look at other options or the dual boiler by Breville Show details

Finicky and frustrating – I have found it impossible to dial in a good cup. Coming from the dual boiler - which has been great - I bought this for the holiday house. It is too clever by half, working completely add odds with how it is described in the manual, and which even Breville support did not know at first. That is, this machine attempts to adjust time automatically… Read more

to obtain a preset volume in the cup, though with the problem below, this only serves to provide another variable (time) to juggle when trying to dial it in - leading to chasing one's tail and wasting tons of coffee. I am almost ready to buy the next kilo batch before I've been able to vaguely dial it in, only to have to go through it all again. (OK, that was an exaggeration, but you get the idea.) It is very difficult to get a grind between choking or running very loose. So the machine either extracts for ages to get the set volume, or finishes in say 15 seconds for the same volume, or just loses it and conks at 10ml or so if the puck is a little tight. I'm finding it practically impossible to dial it in - and am settling for a somewhat underextracted sour cup at 15 seconds, because the next setting on either dosage time or grind chokes it. There seems to be no fault - this seems to be just how it is, and I'd put it down to poor development testing before green lighting it for production. (My hunch is that there is a good concept here that almost came together but the accountants monstered the engineers: the pump seems under-powered, leading to choking when it should not, and the thermoblock may also is underpowered, so if you get coffee beans out of the fridge it is too pissy to cope with heating the required flow and your extraction is too cold. ) A much regretted and frustrating purchase - the older Express model, would have been better.

Value for money! Cafe quality coffee – As a daily coffee drinker I invested in this coffee machine and it was the best thing I ever did. Good little machine, could be great with some tweaks – Great little machine Not had good coffee machine before so cant really compare the coffee taste to others....but I like what it turns out. great for tea (despite breville assuring it would be) - porter filter doesnt align with coffee shoot so fresh coffee spills over back when filling, have to keep pausing and move/tamping to not loose coffee every time - Shiny silver (back and grill) - doesnt look great, scratches easily, shows marks and splashes - black coating on metal chipping on edges (limited use - 6 coffees a week) - scratches showing rust so its not SS underneath - onscreen maintenance descriptions not clearest - neither is manual very clear, I rely on YouTube - Grind clean message won't clear despite taking grinder apart - Adjusting/ Dialling in grind I'm still not clear how to judge this.... - promo learn to use was limited time to use, but there was no expiry date on the voucher so I missed it.

Loved it Before It Broke – Was a great machine for 14 months before it stopped extracting over 5 seconds. Breville were contacted directly over 2 weeks ago. Were given a job number and then heard nothing after following up twice. This appears to be a common issue, indicating a machine fault. Loved our machine but would not buy a breville machine again after this experience. Show details

Hard to achieve consistency – Its cheaper to run than my nespresso but cant get as good tasting coffee coffee consistently. Im sure this is me not the machine, but wish the was some more obvious dialling in support I posted this review (which I think is pretty fair and balanced) on Breville.com but they denied it. Pretty hacked off about that so posting it here. Show details

If the machine hadn't broken we'd still be using it, reasonable coffee machine.

Update: We have finally been able to get our machine fixed. Turned out a roach had gotten in to the control board and shorted the circuitry.

Amazing little machine – I've never owned a coffee machine before but I couldn't live without it now. It was simple to setup, very easy to clean and even prompts me when it needs an internal clean. Makes a beautiful cup of coffee with multiple changes to suit you (default worked the best for me). Would definitely get another one! Show details

Great coffee, Terrible quality. Repeated broken machines. Drawn out help and repair process. Limited repairers in Qld – Machine makes great coffee, however very unreliable. First machine was only 10 months old when it started tripping the power circuit in the house. Was replaced by Harvey Norman. was only after five months. Started the process with the help desk and it took thirteen days from first the first phone call to actually getting the OK to send to a repairer in Brisbane some 1000 kilometres away as there were no authorized repairers in Mackay. After the machine arrived at the repairer I received a text to say there is a four week turn around. so from initial contact to maybe getting the machine back could be six weeks. Not happy Jan. If it fails again for a third time will be looking for a refund. Lucky there is a twenty four month warranty

Great coffee, Terrible quality. Repeated broken machines – We have had 2 of these machines. The first one died within the first 7 months. When using the extraction function the machine would trip the houses safety switch (switching off all power to the home). The seller tried to argue that we had to send it in to have it assessed and repaired. We got NSW fair trading involved as this was clearly a safety… Read more

issue (flicking the homes safety switch indicates water or steam was coming in to contact with an electrical component of the machine.) We were able to get a replacement machine when NSW fair trading stepped in.

Fast Forward to another 5 or so months and the replacement machine (which was brand new) is having issues. The steam function is pulsing/alternating in strength (going between normal to weak) and at times just stopping with the machine beeping 3 times. No explanation for what those 3 beeps mean in the manual. The exractor is also highly variable, sometimes putting out a good/normal shot amount, other times it isn't.

The coffee these machines make and the ease of use are fantastic, it is just a shame that Breville really let down this machine by it's parts and build quality. Especially for the almost $1k price tag.

Do not buy. Leaks water – Purchased May 2020 (3 weeks old). Within the first week of owning we wondered why it was using so much water and the drip tray was full after 2-3 coffees. Very Strange. Then we refilled the water tank and not only did the drip tray fill up (2 coffees made) there was water all over the bench and floor. We thought it may have been us not putting… Read more

water tank back on right or some user error. Nope, it wasn't us. We emptied the drip tray and refilled the water tank again and this time did not use the machine at all. Monitored the drip tray and it started filling up with the machine off. There is a fault to this product and Breville know it.

I called Breville support - I can take my brand new $900 coffee machine to a repairer to have it serviced and that's all we can offer. My comment - If I had to drop it off, and pick it back up and waste time running it around I may as well take it back. It's faulty and I don't want to risk the repair work not fixing the leak and being back to square one. Breville rep in a grumpy voice and not even willing to have a discussion about the problem - "Hang on, I'll put you on hold and get someone else." 10 minutes on hold, no one else came to the phone, and the call magically got cut off.

Pathetic service Breville. I own multiple Breville products and will likely not buy Breville again.

UPDATE: After a 24hr battle, caused by Breville refusing a refund and trying to control the returns process, the retailer has provided me with a full refund.

Broke in less than 6 months - no explanation why – The machine is stunning and, when it actually works, makes a fantastic espresso. We used it every day. 2020). We upgraded to this machine after using a $250 Sunbeam espresso machine for over TEN years but now the Breville is already faulty, despite retailing for 4-5 times the price. We noticed steam coming up from the drip tray back in April and wondered if this was an issue. Shortly after, every time we went to grind coffee the power would cut out and we have to go outside to reset the fuse. We've sent it to Breville's authorised repairer - it's been at the shop for 3 weeks even though we were told it would take 2 weeks at most. Breville was non-apologetic and also hasn't explained what the fault was in the first place. I tried to write a review on their website but that was ignored. Definitely not the quality I was expecting from such a reputable brand.

Worst machine I have owned. Broke 2 times within 6 months – I can not state how disappointed I am in this machine and Breville. Great machine – I have had several home coffee machines over the years, this is the best one yet for the following reasons, it's ready to make a coffee in seconds, the time it takes to use the steam wand is only about 10 seconds, thereby eliminating the need for a dual boiler system. cons are the filters are not much use, better using the double and the machine moves a little when taking the group head out of the machine, but this may loosen with use. Otherwise a great device and quick to make a coffee.

Excellent machine – I was convinced to buy this due to the reviews I had read about this machine. Setup : simple. Quality of coffee produced : excellent and consistent. Machine is extremely quiet when extracting coffee shot. Every setting can be adjusted to suit. I get my beans from a local supplier (always fresh). I would recommend this machine to family and friends without hesitation. Show details
