Pretty good! None of the water enamels available are perfect – I actually think this product is pretty good, especially compared to the equivalent Taubmans and Dulux options. I restored a room in my very old house. For the old timber sash windows I used 3 different water enamel products. For horizontal surfaces and exterior facing, I used the British paints h20 gloss and for other surfaces I used the Taubmans… Read more ·  1

water enamel and dulux aquaenamel, semi gloss. From my experience, the British paints one was the best. None of them were perfect though. The British paints one wasn’t bad, coverage was better than the Taubmans but maybe not as good as the dulux. Although, I had the dulux tinted to Lexicon. Application properties were varied. Dulux laid down well but was very watery. The British paints was slightly more viscous and didn’t level as well as the dulux. The Taubmans was most viscous and did minimal self-levelling.

The dulux was as thin as water. To a point it was hard to apply without getting runs. Strangely, coverage wasn’t bad. Probably levelled the best. 2 coats over primer and it was done.

The Taubmans was absolute rubbish. I was 4-5 coats in when I said ‘that’ll have to do’. It would take 6-8 coats to hide the minor primer inconsistencies. Coverage was abhorrent. Didn’t level well either.

The British paints had reasonable coverage. 2-3 coats over primer and I was satisfied. The finish is the hardest of them all now it’s cured, but this was glossy, the others were semi gloss.

I would recommend this product. As with almost all painting I do, I prime first. It’s an extra step but I reckon it’s worth it 90% of the time. I used the dulux 3 in 1 primer for all (which is a great product). Also, make sure you mix your paint well. I used a drill mounted mixer and a stirrer. Half the problems with coverage are poor mixing. The other half are product related, like with Taubmans.

Peels and chips – Like many other users of this product, I too had a terrible experience. As a professional Handyman and renovator of multiple houses, I have used my fair share of paints. Even after the prescribed amount of drying time, this product peeled away from the surface I had painted (a factory primed door) when applying the second coat. Then, when… Read more

attempting to sand the product off, it just rolls into sticky balls. I will never purchase British Paints H2O enamel again. Shame on you British paints for creating such a product, and shame on you Bunnings for selling it....despite the consistent faults customers are complaining about.

Waste of Money Rubbish Product – Painted skirtings, door frames, window frames and doors of a whole house. All areas were sanded, wiped down with methylated spirits and undercoated. It does not flow properly seems to drag. If you go back over an area it leaves marks and tends to lift already painted area. After 48 hours paint still feels wet although dry. Paint peels off like… Read more

old vinyl paint. Don't try to remove a dried drip it will peel the whole lot off. Having worked for an opposition paint company I have never seen anything like this in my life. Had to spend hours sanding and repainting areas that peeled off. When sanding it just rolls up into balls, so frustrating and annoying. Took some of the peeled off paint to a specialist paint store, the store assistant asked me why I was giving him a vinyl sticker. When I explained it was British Paints H20 enamel, he asked me if I was joking. Never again, can't trust British Paints. Will tell everyone I know about this sub standard product that should not be sold and removed from production.

Do not buy this paint – If I could rate it zero I would. It dries with bumps. You can’t smooth it without ripping up all the paint. You can still see the primer. You ruined my door and wasted my time!! I want my money back. Show details

How can this be so bad? – I have 18 doors to paint white. I've always used Dulux Oil based enamel before for woodwork but my wife hates the smell. So I tried a water based enamel. I might just as well have used milk. There seems to be no coverage. I'm on the third coat. I can still see the original colour (beige) . Which is weird as the paint is as thick as treacle. The… Read more

finish is shocking. Gloss? I don't think so. I've tried 2 different rollers, the last one is a very smooth sponge, great with the Dulux enamel (oil based) I previously had a finish like a mirror. Now I have a finish like sandpaper. What a waste of money and effort, how do I now get the crap off? I wish I had read these reviews first...

Can't trust British Paints anymore – I purchased a 4 lt can to do skirts and architraves in my bedroom, but switched to a different brand exterior gloss when the first coat of h20 was peeling off, as I thought I must have been doing something wrong. Decided to use the paint on the campervan cupboards, to save money, but have spent 2 days and am so disappointed with outcome. Painting… Read more

late yesterday afternoon, it was drying off so fast and catching up in the brush when I was laying it off. 6am today, 19 degrees, sanding back and trying again. Not drying as quick, but not covering well and can't get brushstrokes out (new brush, not a cheapie). 4 house renos under my belt, and doubting my own abilities. After reading the reviews, I wonder why this product is still on the market?

H20 water based enamel used on very old wood – I chose the H20 water based enamel on a friends reccomemdation and was very happy with it. Brushes cleaned up easily and as long as I wasn't stingy with the amount of paint I used. The doors, trim and skirting boards came up really well for 80 year old wood. Being summer I have had to be careful what days I painted, as it dries fairly quickly… Read more

but that is easily worked around.

I did find it went on the skirting boards and door trim easier then the doors, but I'm also a novice when painting but was still happy with the result.

Crap!!!! – This product is bloody crap. Prep skirting, door frames doors as pre information on can. And the crap is peeling off!!! Cover is horrible. I should of just got water of the tap and painted with that. What a waste of money, time and effort. $80 down the drain and a weekend wasted.  Show details

Excellent finish – I was using Dulux Aquanamel with reasonable results on flush doors, but ran out of paint and purchased British Paints H2O Enamel to finish the projectd. I used a roller to apply the products and laid it off with a brush. The British Paints gave me a noticeably superior finish as I found it did not dry as fast. I would recommend the product.  Show details ·  1

As other reviews: Do Not Buy – I also wish I had read reviews before I started to paint. I used low sheen for the walls and the H2O for the doors and skirting etc, both really thin bad paint. The only reason I purchased as my daughter picked a color that was British paint, well its not actually a color it was pure white. I never thought it would be such a bad paint. either Dulux or Haymes before. Bitish paint was't cheap by any means, however as other reviews I had to put 3 coats on the doors and 3 damn coats on the walls. I had even prepared the skirting by undercoating and still had to put 3 coats on. Bunnings should not sell this, I will also be telling them next time I am in store. Its just such a waste of paint and our time. Never again will I buy British Paint and I will tell anyone who asks.

Worst paint I ever used – This paint is difficult to get a decent finish. Even a short nap roller gives orange peel finish. Brushes leave marks. Needs 3 coats to get a really solid finish. This paint should be taken off the market – This paint is rubbish don't buy you will be very sorry, doesn't coat, not a smooth finish and it certainly is not glossy it's expensive to buy and as far as I am concerned I think British Paints H20 should be taken off the market, so many people ripped off, if I had kept the receipt I would have taken it back for a refund. I intend to put this information out on facebook to possibly prevent other people of making the same mistake.  Show details

What a time and money waster!!!!! – Wanting to paint all internal doors with H20 Enamel but I only bought 2 litres to start with. Managed to get a reasonable finish on the door of the en suite. I am still trying to get a reasonable finish on the bedroom door. I have tried to spray (thinned lightly as the paint wasn't runny as per some of the reviews) but it still dried quickly and I… Read more

couldn't get a wet edge even after 3 attempts - boy it dried fast!! Most of the paint went on the garage floor as overspray. So bought a 4 lit tin. Opened up the spray nozzle a whisker to make it more HVLP and then couldn't avoid runs no matter how fast I moved. Again the consistency in the tin appeared normal. Had one more try with the sprayer and thought I'd nailed it. Went back a couple of hours later and found some lovely big sags which I never expected. I gave up the sprayer and bought the best roller Bunnings had but then I couldn't get rid of the volcanoes. So sanded off again and rolled another coat and followed with a brush to eliminate the potential cratering and pimples (more like boils). This left brush marks which were totally unacceptable so more sanding. So I then laid the door flat and tried with the roller again and it left the heaviest orange peel you could imagine. Sanded again and rolled again and followed with the brush again late in the day when humidity is up a bit and temperature down a bit so the paint should have had longer to dry and longer to level out. I sanded for an hour this morning and still not finished. Anyone want 2 litres of H2O enamel. I won't get a refund from Bunnings because I didn't keep the receipt. NO MORE BP here!!!

Poor flow – Absolutely hopeless trying to get a nice even finish on my internal doors. These were removed for painting on the flat to avoid sagging. doing this again as it has cost a fortune in paint to acheive some coverage and oodles of lost time. If you're worried about the smell of oil based it's nothing compared to these hassles. Why not remove the door and paint it in the shed ? At least you'll get something that looks good and doesn't stay tacky forever. Good luck !
