Many ways to reduce payouts
I’ll start by saying that pet insurance is not great value overall and doesn’t work like health insurance. For instance, you can’t transfer between providers without starting new waiting periods. That said, the price of this policy is comparable with others but worse value. For one, there is an excess of $100, whereas others have no excess. The $100 excess is also not per pet, but per condition! If you claim twice in a year but they are for different things you will pay the excess twice. That caught me out because the headline word is “excess” ...and you have to click in to see their definition of that. Secondly, there is a limit to how much you can claim for consultation fees: $300 per year. One trip to the emergency vet and 2/3 of that is gone. 5 years ago when we signed up for this they also tried to deny a claim for a skin lesion because the first time we took him to the vet “dry skin” was noted on his record (before we had the insurance) so they tried on “pre-existing condition”. There are much better value policies out there.
Deceiving and unethical
I went with Bupa because I have my PHI with them but I ended up cancelling it the next day for our new puppy.
We had the policy commence on Friday. After we had paid and completed the transaction online I get an email the next day to say his insurance starts at 11.59pm on Friday... What a joke. We had to cancel his vet appointment that day because I wanted to ensure he was covered.
Imagine leasing a car and being told it starts on Friday, and then after signing the contract they tell you that you can only start driving the car at 11.59pm. I d...on't know how it's legal or fair. I felt really confused and mislead. Completely false advertising and classic misleading. Why on earth would I choose to start insurance on Friday but not want it till 11.59pm I called when they opened at 8am to try resolve the issue and have the cover ACTUALLY start on Friday and was told there was nothing they could do. The initial guy couldn't seem to understand why I wanted to take my brand new puppy to the vet and just asked if he was injured and it felt like I was being interrogated for why I was unhappy he would not be covered despite not being sick/unwell. As a new puppy parent I shouldn't have to explain why my brand new puppy needs a general check up a few days after coming home. I will be cancelling by own health cover with BUPA too after 5 years of membership.
Worst Pet cover
Have been with Bupa for nearly seven years....
I put in claims over this time.. the usual claims.. yearly needles and check up.. an ear infection... a yeast infection.. an allergic reaction to something .. only one claim was ever approved and that was the yearly needles which I was reimbursed hardly any of the cost.. all other claims denied due to an excess.. after multiple declines for reimbursement i said i was leaving them they said I couldn't as I had been paid out a small amount reimbursement for that years needles.. I said I'm not paying...
We have had BUPA pet insurance for years and 2020 was the first year we claimed. Our Goldie has had a bad year with bronchitis, ruling out lung cancer, and then to top the year off he had 3 seizures on Xmas day and ended up at the emergency vet twice, then kept overnight for emergency treatment. I went to the Pet Portal a couple of minutes ago to check if the vet had submitted our claims only to find they were paid. On New Years Day. They last one was only submitted on the 27th. Your company had made our lives a tiny bit better in what is a hor...rid time by taking some of the stress away, and for that we can’t thank you enough. So glad we made the choice to insure him with you and it’s wonderful to feel like you have his back. I don’t leave reviews very often but I felt you deserved this one.
Pathetic service and cover
Was originally denied my claim stating its Pre existing when he hadn't ever been to the vet for the issue. Proved that and got hit with a huge excess meaning I still got jack crap back. May as well go back to the policy people I was with
Do not sign up to this scam
Seriously, do not sign up with them. My dog got a huge laceration from an accident, had to get some surgery, paid $240 upfront for staples etc. Bupa covered nothing, absolutely nothing. The whole deal with the excess means you can’t get anything back. My insurance was about 20 bucks a month, which is 240 bucks for a year, may as well have saved that money and not gone through the headache of having to make the claim. Seriously Bupa, you guys are awful.
So fast and easy!
Just made our first claim and was surprised how quick and easy the process was! Submitted photos of invoices through the online portal and the money was in our account in less than 2 business days. We were reimbursed the exact amount we anticipated after looking through our policy. Having the excess deducted from our refund made the process so easy too. No complaints here, would definitely recommend!
Monthly payment for absolutely no cover!
I have been with Bupa Pet Insurance for almost 2 years, in the first year I got some money back for a few things I claimed, however this year every claim I've put through they always come back at you with "Nil Benefit". It is a $200 excess, however when you look around compared to other providers you can get similar/better cover, with a slightly higher monthly cost, to have a $0 excess and actually get 80% of your bills back! I am currently looking around as their customer service is nil existent, absolutely terrible cover and terrible service.
Bupa pet insurance- don’t sign up
Made a claim for about $1000 refund was $57 better stay away from this company.
Customer care not helpful and have to be on the phone waiting for hours to be answered.
Nice and fast claims
No issues. Claims done quickly. Phone wait too long nearly 50 mins so done online. That was easy. Great job. Stay fast, convenient, honest and easy to use. We want convenience and you’re it.
Insurance, good value for money, staff were pleasant and easy to deal with, when I contacted them . Reimbursement of vet fees were paid promptly. Could not be more satisfied with the product.
Not worth it
I chose the 'ultimate' cover as it states it covers up to $20,000 annually , along with the added routine care package, and pay $80.00/month. Unfortunately this insurance doesn't cover as much as they state, it only covers $250.00/year (including de-sexing, as they gave no money back for that). Whenever i ask why claims I made had a nil benefit they say it's exceeded the limit of coverage. I'm not sure what I'm paying $80.00/month for if it's not covering parts of my vet bills, especially if it didn't cover the de-sexing operation at all. I'll be shopping around for another pet insurance provider, if this is all you get from their 'ultimate'/best package, but until then I'm stuck with them.
Worst pet insurance ever paid for ultimate cove and my pet had an accident and had to be rusjed to the vet. Later on we were told that he wasn't covered for accident even though it stated in his policy it was. Stay away from Bupa pet insurance.
Absolute rip off
I had to give one star rating because there are no 0 star rating. Incredibly disappointed in this product. I made a claim for my dog who had what appeared to be an allergic reaction. Took her to the vet on a fine Sunday morning and thought no worries you have pet insurance. $190 plus dollars later my dog was on the road to recovery and I made my claim. I did it submit case notes from the vet and was then informed that it would take a month for any results of their decaying to pay. Today I got the good news! Despite having the top cover f...or my pets I would not be given a refund because it would exceed my yearly entitlement for my policy. Needless to say I cancelled today. Total rip off. I will also be reviewing my own Bupa health insurance and after over 20 years with them will most likely leave.
The worst customer service
I have Bupa health insurance and pet insurance for Many years. The customer service you receive from Bupa health is fantastic and the cover they provide is excellent but Bupa Pet Insurance is the complete opposite. Bupa should be ashamed of the customer service Bupa pet (pet sure) staff provide. I wish I insured else where for pet insurance. I would not recommend Bupa Pet Insurance.

Waste of money not worth it - customer service treats you like a criminal
With the $200 excess per condition and other ways this insurance is really not worthwile. 90% of my claims resulted in nil benefits. Currently I have a claim for my second dog pending for over a month because he is healthy and they don't believe us that he didn't need to see a vet during certain time periods. Doing everything they can to stall and get us to go away instead of paying us. The tone of the emails we receive from is accusatory, as if we are trying to scam them when it is in fact us that appear to have been scammed by them. Being sent the same questions over and over again, our vet has sent documents to them 3 times and they "haven't been received". It is an absolute nightmare to deal with this company.
We had to claim a large expense for our dog and were happily surprised to receive a larger than expected refund . It has been worth having bupa pet insurance !! Our policy is certainly good value
Ordinary - but they all are
They were generally polite and helpful when I had contact with them (never made a claim), however, price increases every year, which you expect, but then just recently they increased the premium by 25%!!!
That is just gouging, in my opinion, so I cancelled my policy and decided I will take responsibility for my dog and keep them all out of the picture.

Pet insurance claim
Had a good experience with phone calls dmd explained online claims well. My claim was completed and refunded within two days. I was so happy with my BUPA Pet Insurance as Id never had a claim before
Disappointing - Pet Insurance Customer Service
I have been a member with Bupa Health for years and also have my car insurance with them so I obviously looked at Bupa Pet Insurance when we got our puppy.
Went online and got a quote which I thought was reasonable as we got the highest cover of $20,000 and was $90 a month. We made a claim in the first year and although you had to pay upfront and we did need to ring Bupa once to ask about our refund all was okay.
Bupa automatically renewed our policy in July and our repayments jumped to $110 a month, I went online and tried to get a new quot...e to see if it would be the same as what they bumped me up to and to my surprise I could get the exact policy for $80 a month so I called Bupa and explained that I could get the same policy $30 a month cheaper than what I currently paid to which I was told this is for new customers and their policies will go up after a year, I asked do Bupa not look after customers which have been with them for multiple years and explained I had my health and car insurance with Bupa to. I was told there is nothing they can do apart from lower the covered amount to $12,000 to make it cheaper. I asked if I am able to cancel my policy which I was advised I can cancel at any time so I said I will look in to a new insurance company and call them back to cancel. In the meantime I had also submitted a claim for my dogs 1 year vaccination which Bupa paid us back $80. Last month I called Bupa to ask if I could lower the covered amount to $12,000 to which I was now advised I cant because I have made a claim and have to keep that cover for the year, I asked to then cancel my cover and was told again I cant because I made a claim and if I want to cancel I need to pay the complete years amount. I explained I wasn't advised this previously and was told that's the way it is. The man was very rude and clearly didn't care. I will be leaving Bupa as soon as the next year is out and already moved my car insurance and looking at new insurance providers for my health care. I would not recommend Bupa Pet Insurance at all!!!
Questions & Answers
My dog suddenly limping this morning. VET recommend x-ray and blood test to find out what ia going on. Are these cover by Bupa? I got a premium package
It should show on your policy if uts covered. Dont forget that you still have to pay a certain premium like first 300 bucks is not covered. And if its not the same issue each time they make it first 300 for every issue is not covered, bit just ine off excess
I hope your furry friend is doing alright! I’d recommend having a chat with our Pet Insurance team to find out more about how your cover works. You can reach them directly on 134 135 (option 1, then option 6), and they’ll lend a hand.
Hope this helps,
As a lifelong Bupa member I was wondering if I get a discount for dog insurance? Also is a lifetime policy available?
