Bupa pet insurance is an absolute scam. They will use any excuse not to pay. Do not insure with them. Our 12 month old dog has an accident by dislocating her hip running into a rock. No cover, not the right ‘accident’ apparently. ACCC really needs to deal with these fools. They now lose pet insurance and our health insurance that we’ve had with them for many many years. Thanks for nothing bupa, you thieving maniac.
Worse cover ever
Been with them for almost 6 years now never a claim… first time I put in claim in I het no benefits excess is $200 and on top benefits is 80%
Terrible - they cover almost nothing
Been with them since 2015 our dog birth and have paid almost $4000 in premiums, only two times needed in the past 6 years to take him to vet once for check up and once for dental including checkup. They have rejected both claims and paid nothing. Zero. We cancelled our policy today. Bupa is i famous for worst insurance cover.
Dont go with Bupa Pet Insurance. My cat was previously insured with other Insurance company and no issues with any claims in the past. Since I changed to Bupa they had rejected my claims which I paid out of pocket surgery costs $3500 and claims was rejected and was not reviewed fairly as they have not considered the additional documentations as they requested to avoid paying out the claims.
Bupa Pet Insurance is a scam! Note to other Pet owners: Avoid it at all costs.
Worst customer service.
Terrible service and product
I’ve been with Bupa health insurance for ever and a day and never had and issue with that. Bupa pet insurance on the other hand has been nothing but a huge waste of time and money. I’ve have a few claims with them regarding the same issue with my pet that have been approved and reimbursed for. Then my latest claim which is for the same medical reason as my previous claims has all of a sudden been rejected and have been told I am not covered for that. When asked why it has previously been covered and not now I was told that previously it was an ...automated response during “covid times” and that I shouldn’t of being getting covered and that the reimbursements where out the goodness of there heart.... not only that, it took about 6 phone calls to get an answer which kept ending with them pretending they couldn’t hear me all of a sudden and saying they’ll call me back and hang up on me, which I never once got a call back and had to go through all the promps and being on hold each time.
Bupa Pet Insurance Experience
Applied for Pet Insurance Online. Quote only, was happy with price and gave details and credit card.Received a Reference No.with confirmation of start date. Have been with Bupa Health all of my life for Health Insurance. Was wondering why I didn’t receive an email confirmation of policy.Called and was hung up on 4 times. I was put on hold and each time after explaining the situation line would cut off.It was a direct line to Sydney.Spoke to 4 different people.Told by last Gentlemen I spoke to not approved. Asked if I hadn’t called would I have re...ceived a response. Luckily I didn’t cancel existing Woolworths Pet Insurance. Bupa told me that I wasn’t approved.I asked why? Gentlemen asked if I have an existing Pet Insurance which I replied yes,but looking to change.Told I would have to cancel existing policy before applying with them. Why would I cancel prior to knowing I can get another Insurance cover first? Mind you I did take screenshot of reference and start date which was confirmed and a welcome pack I will receive shortly. If I didn’t call them to follow up,what would I think I was covered? It clearly shows a Start date and commencement date. A welcome pack would be coming in the mail. I thought it was unusual not to receive an email. Anyway, sent a message to them via messenger and it was live communication which dropped out as well during the conversation . Will now go with Pet Insurance Australia after reading all the reviews. I honestly thought I’d ignore the reviews with Bupa Pet Ins after being a current health member with them for 45 years plus and my family. Seriously dumbfounded. Worst communication I’ve ever received by any company in a long time. Disappointed beyond belief.
waste of money
I wish I had read some of these reviews before I spent the money. I took BUPA pet insurance out because i have health insurance with them. Waste of money as when I needed them - for surgery for an undescended testicle I was unable to claim because of the very very fine print.
With the benefit of hindsight - should have saved the money and it would have paid for this surgery.
Will definitely not be renewing.
Avoid BUPA. Waste. Scam.
You can guarantee that, when the chips are down and you think you can rely on the pet insurance you took out just in case, well you can guarantee you will be let down by Bupa. Non-existent, uncompassionate customer servicee, very, very misleading policy where you will need to read the micro-print before signing on. What you may not realise is this - there is an excess to pay, yes, fine - but you will pay the $100 excess on EVERY SINGLE ISSUE/PROBLEM your pet has, every year. So.....come in with a lame leg and a skin issue? That will be $200 in...excess cost. Come in with a GI issue the next month? That will be another $100 excess, thanks. Then the kicker. Say, your pet has a lump removed that is suspected to be (or is) cancer? Well, that cancer will be considered a "skin issue" and Bupa (not many know this) has "sub-limits" for most conditions. So, you sign up and believe you are covered for, say, $12,000 in vet costs anually. But - you're actually not. There are sub-limits on most conditions so you will only be covered up to $500 (annually). So, that tumor? Good luck in treating it with any help from Bupa as you are out of luck after that $500 limit is reached (super quickly). Any further surgery/chemo/meds in that year........OUT OF LUCK. I suppose you can't call it a scam as there would be some super-tiny print somewhere that warns you but we thought we'd read through our policy before signing on and did not realise this. However, it certainly stands right on the line of being a scam. We are also stuck with Bupa and the absolute lack of care until our renewal date. Please, absolutely take our word and look elsewhere. It is an utter waste of money and horrible customer service for your dollars. They absolutely do not care about customer service or retention. Please do avoid the scam we find ourselves in.
Our miniature dachshund recently developed IVDD and needed spinal surgery. He spent over a week in the animal emergency hospital recovering. I submitted the claim to Bupa, it was assessed within 5 business days and the benefit was paid into our account in the next 48 hours. Not only is it a stressful time when a pet is sick, outlaying $11,500 in vet bills isn’t easy! Bupa made this as simple and straightforward as it needed to be. Couldn’t recommend them highly enough.
- Bupa Pet Insurance
Beware Bupa will scam you if you have access on your policy.
My cat started throwing up and eventually we discovered that she had a urinary tract infection.
I had $200 access on my policy and I was supposed to get $480 for my insurance claim.
In order to avoid this Bupa divided the conditions into two different things gastroenteritis and urinary tract infection and I was charged $200 access twice for two different conditions despite the cat having just one condition.
I was only paid $80.
You can’t speak to the vet who made these false claims and you’re responsible to prove that these conditions are different.
Many ways to reduce payouts
I’ll start by saying that pet insurance is not great value overall and doesn’t work like health insurance. For instance, you can’t transfer between providers without starting new waiting periods. That said, the price of this policy is comparable with others but worse value. For one, there is an excess of $100, whereas others have no excess. The $100 excess is also not per pet, but per condition! If you claim twice in a year but they are for different things you will pay the excess twice. That caught me out because the headline word is “excess” ...and you have to click in to see their definition of that. Secondly, there is a limit to how much you can claim for consultation fees: $300 per year. One trip to the emergency vet and 2/3 of that is gone. 5 years ago when we signed up for this they also tried to deny a claim for a skin lesion because the first time we took him to the vet “dry skin” was noted on his record (before we had the insurance) so they tried on “pre-existing condition”. There are much better value policies out there.
Deceiving and unethical
I went with Bupa because I have my PHI with them but I ended up cancelling it the next day for our new puppy.
We had the policy commence on Friday. After we had paid and completed the transaction online I get an email the next day to say his insurance starts at 11.59pm on Friday... What a joke. We had to cancel his vet appointment that day because I wanted to ensure he was covered.
Imagine leasing a car and being told it starts on Friday, and then after signing the contract they tell you that you can only start driving the car at 11.59pm. I d...on't know how it's legal or fair. I felt really confused and mislead. Completely false advertising and classic misleading. Why on earth would I choose to start insurance on Friday but not want it till 11.59pm I called when they opened at 8am to try resolve the issue and have the cover ACTUALLY start on Friday and was told there was nothing they could do. The initial guy couldn't seem to understand why I wanted to take my brand new puppy to the vet and just asked if he was injured and it felt like I was being interrogated for why I was unhappy he would not be covered despite not being sick/unwell. As a new puppy parent I shouldn't have to explain why my brand new puppy needs a general check up a few days after coming home. I will be cancelling by own health cover with BUPA too after 5 years of membership.
Worst Pet cover
Have been with Bupa for nearly seven years....
I put in claims over this time.. the usual claims.. yearly needles and check up.. an ear infection... a yeast infection.. an allergic reaction to something .. only one claim was ever approved and that was the yearly needles which I was reimbursed hardly any of the cost.. all other claims denied due to an excess.. after multiple declines for reimbursement i said i was leaving them they said I couldn't as I had been paid out a small amount reimbursement for that years needles.. I said I'm not paying...
We have had BUPA pet insurance for years and 2020 was the first year we claimed. Our Goldie has had a bad year with bronchitis, ruling out lung cancer, and then to top the year off he had 3 seizures on Xmas day and ended up at the emergency vet twice, then kept overnight for emergency treatment. I went to the Pet Portal a couple of minutes ago to check if the vet had submitted our claims only to find they were paid. On New Years Day. They last one was only submitted on the 27th. Your company had made our lives a tiny bit better in what is a hor...rid time by taking some of the stress away, and for that we can’t thank you enough. So glad we made the choice to insure him with you and it’s wonderful to feel like you have his back. I don’t leave reviews very often but I felt you deserved this one.
Pathetic service and cover
Was originally denied my claim stating its Pre existing when he hadn't ever been to the vet for the issue. Proved that and got hit with a huge excess meaning I still got jack crap back. May as well go back to the policy people I was with
Questions & Answers
My dog suddenly limping this morning. VET recommend x-ray and blood test to find out what ia going on. Are these cover by Bupa? I got a premium package
It should show on your policy if uts covered. Dont forget that you still have to pay a certain premium like first 300 bucks is not covered. And if its not the same issue each time they make it first 300 for every issue is not covered, bit just ine off excess
I hope your furry friend is doing alright! I’d recommend having a chat with our Pet Insurance team to find out more about how your cover works. You can reach them directly on 134 135 (option 1, then option 6), and they’ll lend a hand.
Hope this helps,
