Dulux Weathershield Low Sheen Acrylic

Absolute rip off – I can’t believe how expensive this paint is. $279 for 15L. This is pure price gouging! The coverage is not very good at all on render either.
Poor finish, application and leaching of weathershield. Not fit for purpose – I’ve previously painted several houses and have never experienced such poor quality paint and finish as I have with dulux low sheen weathershield. Product leached, poor application, not low sheen, chalky, poor coverage and finish. This has caused a lot of wasted time and money. I’ve had to wash the painted exterior walls numerous time to remove… Read more
the leaching, before sanding all walls and applying WATTYL SOLARGUARD instead. (Highly recommend WATTYL SOLARGUARD) I returned the dulux weathershield to my local dealer and got a refund, but dulux will never admit that their product is faulty and not fit for purpose. It’s an expensive and time consuming process with no compensation. I will not buy any dulux product again, that means no paint from Bunnings as it’s ALL dulux.

My house is 3 years old, the paint job looks like it is a 10 year old house. Extensive render bleeding and blotchy faded paint. STAY AWAY. Their website is full of marketing crud, the proof is in the pudding. Metricon are fobbing me off as the 1 year warranty is done, and Dulux are dragging their heals. It has been 1 month since i approached Dulux,… Read more
and they have shown zero urgency to inspect and address the issue. They are trying to make it sound like rocket science, but how complicated can it be. Poor product, poor application, incorrect application. They wish to take a chunk of render out to have it analyses, but have stated the repair of this will be for my expense.

Hard to believe the negative reviews – I have used weathershield on 4 buildings I’ve owner built over 35 years Used on preprinted fingerjointed LOSP timber shiplap, wooden windows, timber veranda posts & railing, fibre cement weatherboards & rendered surfaces, most in full sun & some very close to the ocean & exposed to the western sun. In all cases I’ve had no failures at all. The… Read more
fading others mentioned I have never experienced but maybe they were using very dark tints. One house we owned & which was painted for 13 years I refreshed before selling due to the mildew resistance failing after 12 years on the rafters under the veranda but other from that a wash down with light bleach (which I did before repainting) brought it back to almost original condition. I couldn’t recommend this product highly enough!
Terrible colour fade, won’t stick to pre-primed LOSP – Our extension done 7 years ago was painted using weathershield paint, and after this short time, apparently the shield has broken. This was a new surface which was prepared correctly and properly primed, yet after 7 years in the Aussie sun it has faded anywhere the sun shines on the surface more than a couple of hours per day. In addition to… Read more
this I have also had weathershield fail on a fence I painted, with peeling occurring extensively on pink pre-primed LOSP.
Won’t be buying Dulux again, the weathershield name is just a word, not an ability of this product. Aren’t their regulations about truth in advertising?

Very easy to use and great coverage – I’ve just painted the exterior of my house using a combo of low sheen Weathershield and semi gloss Weathershield. I’ve used 30 litres of low sheen and 4 litres of semi gloss. One colour is white and the other is a mid grey. The surfaces were a mix of pre painted and some new weatherboards. I’m thinking that it’s true that painting is all about… Read more · 1
preparation. We went to a lot of trouble to clean, fill and sand then fill again so the surfaces were in as good a condition as they were going to be. The semi gloss went onto the trim and around the window frames. I undercoated the new timber with an oil undercoat and finished with two coats of Weathershield. I found that coverage was pretty good but definitely needed the two coats. After the second coat the timber looked fantastic and I’m very happy with the results. Application was with a brush. The paint itself performed really well and went on smoothly. It can dry quite quickly but was no big deal provided I kept a good wet edge. The main job was the weatherboards and the low sheen Weathershield. Apart from the cutting in, application was with a roller. Again, the paint went on smoothly and colour cover was excellent. It also really needed the two coats but the end result was very pleasing. The self priming paint went perfectly over the new weatherboards and after the second coat, you couldn’t tell what was new and what was pre painted wall. I painted in cool weather (15 - 20 degrees Celsius) and in full sun. I had no issues with the paint whatsoever and wouldn’t hesitate to use it again. I note the number of negative reviews about the product and don’t really understand them given my experience with this product. I could speculate why people would have trouble but if best keep that to myself. All I can say for sure is that my experience this time around was totally positive and provided prep is done correctly, I reckon that Dulux Weathershield is an excellent product that is well up to the task of protecting my house in the Aussie extreme conditions.
According to the Dulux lab technicians, Weathershield, will not adhere to PINE – So if you look at any of my other reviews on their products and with the Dulux company as a whole you will see the trouble I have gone through with their exterior products. This whole ordeal has cost me around $4000 in materials and labour which may not seem like a lot, but when you have a family including 4 children and have saved hard to do… Read more

Back story... https://youtu.be/OOeHuSZ71wQ
My issue was choosing their product over any of the others.
We painted the trusses of the pergola we were building and as you can see from that video, the results are less than ideal to put it mildly.
The only thing worse than that result was the Dulux Customer Service team.
The paint bubbled no matter what method was used that Dulux apparently always recommend (except on their web pages, product or their sales reps).
But they didn't want to hear anything other than it was not their fault.
Having raised these issues through Dulux and Bunnings finally getting them to send out someone to take samples we got a result.
This was the email back from Bunnings to my tradie after Dulux decided to stop all contact with myself.
"the issues you are experiencing are due to a natural characteristic of the timber. The yellow crystal like substance is causing the adhesion issues with the paint, this is not a fault of the product, but a natural characteristic as timber is a natural product"
They are saying that their own paint cannot adhere to pine because of one of its natural characteristics... That would be a handy piece of information to have on their website or their labels. Even their sales reps who happened to be at Bunnings while the paint was being purchased didn't mention this when we queried them before purchasing.
There was an offer of $2000 and a Bunnings gift card of $500 as a "goodwill" gesture which we refused as that only covered the materials, not the extra labour costs nor the amount of time wasted, plans that had to be changed and leave I took to get this job done.
The paint test we did using one of their much cheaper rivals which I have done a review of and it worked perfectly without any prep work. It sustained multiple 40+ days that melted roads whereas the Weathershield "premium" product had issues at 24 degrees after being left to cure in a garage for almost a week and being applied using a prep process NO ONE in their right mind would go through.
At the time other brand we tested was around the $53 mark for 4L vs Dulux $91 mark for 4L. The results speak for themselves.
I will never use their products, nor any of their umbrella company products and neither will any of my friends, tradies, family and acquaintances. In fact we recently underwent a refurb at work and painted 2 floors of our office, after discussing with building management convinced them NOT to use Dulux which they would normally do.
As they have failed to get back to me and try to resolve this properly, not to mention the fact they have broken consumer laws, we will be taking this matter further.
Bit of a follow up. Bunnings nor Dulux would front up or even admit fault and we are still going to… Read more
weathershield paint for weatherboards is the best ont he market – I painted houses for 20 years of my life but when I came to my own home 25 to 30 years ago in the 1990s I pressure washed the house scraped it off with a steel scraper then gave it a good sand with a orbital sander knowing from experience if I prepared the base then the top coat would last nearly forever . we then spot touched up with deluxe X10… Read more
and gave it 3 further coats we didn't use any other paint or primer . the X10 lasted 20 to 30 years before the bad paint under the x10 and rot on the boards started to give a little trouble on the north and west face of the house . we pressure washed and scraped the worse of the paint off and gave the house a touch up again then gave it 3 coats of weather shield low sheen and I fully expect never to have to do it again in the next 25 to 30 years and I have had no problems doing touch ups where when the paints been damaged. i have had no trouble with peeling and i see no reason why you would sand it . if you get runs its because you haven't applied it properly .if you have any other trouble with this paint its you not the paint its you that's made a mistake or applied it in bad conditions . its pretty much fool proof too so I read these comments and wonder how on earth can you mess this up ?????. read the instructions or go do a night course or at least learn what your doing and you'll have no problems and never have to do it again . if you get it on your windows use a razor type blade to scrape and trim the excess paint you cant expect to use masking tape on this sort of paint . one of the reasons this paints so good is because its like plastic or powder coating for your wood . after doing painting for half my life id never waste my time using any other paint . I always laugh seeing my neighbours repainting their houses every few years because they cheaped out on the paint .use the best and do your self a favour read the instructions or pay a professional and it will last a life time .

Can't agree with the bad reviews – I'm painting a small weatherboard extension to our house. The paint matches perfectly, covers brilliantly, dries very quickly (though not so fast as to cause problmes) and is a piece of cake to use. I've finished one coat and will apply a second, even though it doesn't look as though it's necessary. I'd go so far as to say this is the best Dulux product I've ever used. Show details · 1

Good quality and great support – Painted the entire of the outside of my home brickwork. It was really hard but got some good advice from the Dulux team online. Preparation is key - if you won’t spend the time prepping your surface then don’t bother painting as you will be doing it again in a year.
Buy good brush and rollers. They make a world of difference.
Get good advice and don’t cut corners - you pay for it later.
Don’t blame people for your poor painting skills.
Negative reviews
Terrible paint – You gotta hand it to Dulux when it comes to promoting their products. Unfortunately most are of very dubious quality. Weathershield chalks and loses sheen level in no time. The Dulux reps will always try to pass the buck by saying that the prep wasn't adequate. Go for the Wattyl Solaguard instead. A little dearer but a far superior product. Show details

Do not be fooled by advertising claims for Dulux Weathershield – Exterior woodwork, including windows was painted in April 2017 by supposedly professional painters who recommended Dulux Weathershield. COLOUR FADE IN A FEW YEARS TIME – We have advocated and used Dulux over a period of 30 years. As Low Sheen Acrylic is super popular, we decided to paint our weatherboard home with it this time. Within 3-4 years the fade on the paint is terrible. The paint is not durable and has no flex on weatherboards that have gap filler to seal the boards. Even on our new garage, with… Read more
boards that had been in the weather for approximately 5 years, then adhered to the garage, gap filled and painted - the paint has now begun to stretch over the filler. I am not at the point where I have to paint all my window sills and trims again in a little over 5 years.
My recommendation - find another reputable brand like Taubmans. I will NOT use Dulux again. This time I am done.

Disappointing paint performance – I used this paint over several years on timber rails and features around the house. It was applied by both professional painters and myself. Window and deck rail – I used this paint on a deck rail with the use of a primer as recommended by a local paint shop. The paint started to peel off within a week. I also used this paint on timber windows and it chips and flakes off so easily. Where it hasn't flaked off, it had started to fade after only 1 summer. The quality is absolutely dreadful. Both great and terrible – Painted H3 CCA treated pine posts with Weathershield in Shale Grey. Worked great and paint dried into the timber quickly. No dripping, not tacky, Just as you'd expect. and just stayed tacky to the touch. Placing two bits of timber on top of each other resulted in adhesion, even after a day, and in pulling them apart, resulted in the paint tearing off. You could have just peeled the paint off and you'd never have know it had been painted.
Luckily, the latter timbers are going in an area out of reach and far enough away from eye line but clearly this paint is not suitable in all circumstances so test first!

bad, bad, bad!!!! – This paint is unbelievably bad!! ripped areas of pain, t sand back and paint again. This was a poor fix as in some areas it still showed but the whole house could not be stripped of paint even though some walls were!!! This also happened to any area of the wall that was accidently knocked and paint removed. Despite adding drying retardants the paint was gluggy, thick and drippy and did not blend well. This paint was put on over an undercoat as suggested by Dulux on properly prepared walls and frames but did not make one bit of difference to the adherence of the paint. Some walls were newly plastered and some walls had been previously painted but it made no difference to the outcome. Do not use this product!!

Using a paint brush is not the best. Using a 12mm nap microfibre roller cover the paint rolls on very well. Same process for dulux aquanamel.
