This machine is interesting, in a good way – I obtained the Dyson DC50 back in 2016, and I must say that it is very impressive, I have been a loyal Dyson customer for quite a while, and I absolutely love their products. When I first brought it, the instructions and assembly were very simple I will give that. The bagless empty system is incredible, although I find it frustrating that I have… Read more ·  1

to dig my hand into the bin to pluck out the dirt that is stuck, the suction is really good although I find that the vacuum is relatively loud considering it is called the "Small Ball". I live in a one-story house, so the stretch hose is very useful for cobwebs, base boards top and bottom, and being able to detach the wand and attach the upholstery tool, or combination tool. The head is able to pull out the imbedded dirt that is deep in the carpet fibres, although over time the black carbon filtered bristles have disintegrated and aren't preforming as well as they used too.

There are a few minor details that make this machine lose a star, the filters are good yes, but the carbon filter says to be washed! When it has been washed the filter seems to be more clogged than before (After being dried of course) and then makes the machine get really hot at the ball base.

Around last year I found it was not picking up as well, so I did some research, as I already do maintenance and repairs on vacuums, I had a T15 and T10 torx, so I took apart the cyclone, and oh my gosh I have never seen that much dust build up!

Overall, this vacuum is perfect for people with weak arms, but not suitable for really tall people. Hope for Dyson to bring back the small balls and possibly add the digital motor and battery! I do hope that Dyson take this idea into consideration as some people prefer upright cordless vacuum cleaners.

Cheers. Bloxian.B

Incredible Mechanics – Carpet to tiles, this machine is amazing. It makes tedious work bearable. The suction is amazing in that you go over a surface once instead of three or four times. I would never go to a conventional vacuum cleaner again. Show details

Not surprised this has been discontinued – I purchased this Dyson DC50 Origin from The Good Guys. Whilst I have been perfectly happy with the service I received from The Good Guys, this vacuum has been extremely disappointing. It falls over at every opportunity and the suction has been extremely poor. I have had to replace the turbo head as the bristles disappeared- not sure if they fell… Read more

out or wore out. The head also cracked. I had to replace the hose too, as it broke. The crevice nozzle is designed with a hole/ slot and is useless at sucking up dirt or fluff etc from crevices, edges or small spaces. I have purchased Dyson vacuum cleaners since they first came out and my first ever Dyson was fantastic. Every subsequent model I have purchased has been poorer and poorer quality. The only reason this vacuum has lasted until now is because I purchased another brand and have been using that. This Dyson died yesterday and I will not be purchasing another. I am not opposed to Dyson- I have a Dyson cooling fan that I am very happy with and would happily recommend that but after a succession of disappointing vacuum cleaners, I will never purchase another Dyson vacuum. Although this model is discontinued there may be discount stores still selling the odd model- hence this review. I also believe Dyson need to take on board feedback from their customers.

Worst vacuum cleaner ever! – We bought this vacuum cleaner in 2014 from the Good guys in Gepps Cross, South Australia. Saleswoman demonstrated the Dyson DC 50 on a small rug, 1 square metres. She boasted about its new advanced "ball" technology and a no hose feature. We were impressed and purchased it for an astronomical price of $850. It was one of the worst decisions we… Read more

have ever made.

To start with, this upright model weighs 6 kilograms, excluding weight of the cylinder, in which the vacuumed rubbish/dirt gets collected. Unless you are a strong person with a powerful wrist, this product is harmful for your wrist and joints. I am right handed, so I was maneuvering it using right hand. My right hand wrist has started to hurt and I am upto a point, where I am going to see a doctor to get a referral to see an orthopedic specialist. My wife is a slender build woman. She cannot use this vacuum because her wrist started hurting from day one. Hence, I bought a mini vacuum, so she does not have to use this one.

Secondly, it comes with only a one year warranty. Some of the parts of this vacuum cleaner started breaking and its condition deteriorated within first few months of using it. Just before the warranty was to expire, whilst vacuuming, I noticed smoke coming out of the (ball) mechanism. It smelt like something was burning. I stopped using it and contacted their customer service department. They were very friendly and booked the vacuum cleaner for a repair. When I took it for a repair, the repairman told me it is going to take at least a month to fix it. I was infuriated! We have three children and a pet, so we cannot live without vacuuming our house. Hence, I went and bought another vacuum cleaner, a VAX from the Good guys for $100. The VAX was a terrible machine. It's parts started breaking up and it did not vacuum very well. However, it was light and very easy to maneuver. After three weeks, we got a call from the repairman advising that the vacuum was fixed and ready to be picked up. It's been less than a year since I picked up the vacuum cleaner from the repairman, the parts have broken up. I cannot use it at all. It's sitting in our carport! Much to our disgust, we are not covered under warranty. I am so upset! This is the worst product Dyson has launched. It is extremely noisy! You need the strength and wrist like a Superman to maneuver it. I got sick of winding the cord in circles, as it does not have an auto retract function. I have had nothing, but a bad experience with this product.

Please avoid this product.

First time Dyson, first time I've loved vacuuming – After years using numerous cheaper model vaccuums that consistently let you down as soon as you started it. I thought it was time to invest in something of quality. The Dyson DC50 is a real beast for its compact size and weight. If I can simply say one thing about the DC50 that sums it up: I no longer feel exhausted vaccuuming. The suction… Read more

is really what you pay for, really gets deep and pulls that carpet pile right up and extracts every little piece of dirt and dust. I was sick to say the least of what was lurking in my carpet for years before my Dyson. The motorised head helps with this and much more durable and tangle-free compared to some heads.

The dust bin is a bit small, so mightn't suit a family home but for my two bedroom unit it's plenty capacity, and so easy to empty and clean!

The filters are lifetime, with care, a real seller for me!

Overall I'm a complete Dyson convert, I wish I'd bought one sooner & am confident it'll last for years to come!

Positive first experience with Dyson – I've had the Dyson DC50 Vacuum cleaner for a bit over a month now, I never thought I would ever buy a Dyson simply because they are so expensive, but after going through multiple vacuum cleaners in a couple of years I decided to give them a try. Overall I am very happy with this model, I love upright cleaners because they are easier for me to… Read more

use without getting a sore back and this one is nice and light making it easy to lift up stairs or move from room to room. I have a large house so cleaning the floors usually takes a while but it also has the ball for maneuvering into all the corners which works very well and makes the job almost fun to do.

Dyson brag about their superior suction and I can see why, even with the dust chamber full there is no decline in suction that I can see. The one negative about this great suction is that the head attaches a bit too well to my hard floors making it difficult to pick up bigger items such as pebbles or cat food pieces.

The only other complaint I have is that the hose for cleaning skirting and windowsills is very stiff and hard to move around, it can be pretty frustrating sometimes and I have wide windowsills so they need cleaning regularly.

I am very happy with my purchase and now that I've seen the performance and quality of a Dyson vacuum I can see why the price is so high, I think it's worth every cent and the happiness of a good purchase will stay with me long after the hurt of a few hundred dollars is gone.

Good so far – This is good for my apartment. Easy to store. Cleans pretty well and only takes me a few minutes to vacuum the whole apartment which is almost all carpeted. I also use it to clean my sofa. It has small attachments which help cleaning tiny corners. A little bit heavy to lift.  Show details

Good vacuum – Happy with the suction but could be better. Very light so Im fine with the trade off. Picks up well on floorboards, tiles and carpet. Reasonable easy to move but wish I went for the barrel one. Easy to remove and empty the dust bin and haven't had to wash the filter yet.  Show details

Great suction and hair don’t stick in the brush – The suction is extremely good no complaints whatsoever. The carpet brush remains clean throughout the course of vacuuming. I have seen some upright vacuums have issues with hair getting tangled in their carpet brushes - but not this Dyson. It’s not quiet for sure but I don’t expect it to be especially if it’s got good suction capability. Wire is long enough. I recommend this product.  Show details

Good alround vacuum but – I use this on all floors, I have two cats and the spinning brush thing works great picking up hair off couch tops and carpet/wood floors. Worst vacuum I've ever used – I used my partners Dyson dc50 today for the first time after moving in together and omg it was useless. The short stick part dosent even reach the top of the couch I had it lift the whole vacuum up onto the couch .and then it didn't really suck as there was still cat fur everywhere.it was good on the floor for a quick vac over but not for getting into corners on getting cob webs down. Il be using my trusty old vacuum from now on .  Show details

The worst piece of machinery I've ever used – I'm 45 minutes into cleaning my kitchen and am not even close to finishing. The machine was refusing to suck, but after pulling apart the vacuum cleaner as per the Youtube video and ensuring every single joint was spotless (not that there was a lot of dirt in there to start with) it began to work, even if very poorly. Every 10-15 seconds it would… Read more

stop sucking again and I'm forced to fiddle around with it to get it to work again. After about 5 minutes of solid work doing this it stopped sucking, seemingly for good, and began spitting out everything it had picked up in the last few minutes back onto the floor. Don't expect a long life – Suction was good, a very noisy machine, quite heavy to move, difficult to manoeuvre, light residential use only lasted 4 years, customer service is limited online instructions on how to unravel brushes and wash and change filters yourself, mine ceased picking up and cost of repair is similar to new machine, I expected more from a machine with such a high price tag, extremely disappointing.  Show details

Great suction but very heavy – Great suction on this vacuum. It's excellent for carpets or rugs. It works very well for vacuuming up dog or animal hair. It works well on surfaces like concrete, tiles or floor boards however it's very loud when used on hard surfaces. It is also very heavy and can be difficult to maneuver. It's size makes it difficult to get underneath furniture or behind corners and doors etc.  Show details

machine has never missed a beat, still sucks as hard as it did from day dot, the only cons i can think of is the section where you need to use the single suction hose, gets a bit tiring trying to lug around a big vacuum while your trying to clean, but it's worth the lug due to the powerful suction in a single go.

Definitely recommended if you have a big house and require to vacuum quiet often.

Very efficient vacuum – This vacuum is very efficient and sucks up a lot of dirt. It is very easy to empty and the extra nozzles that come with vacuum have been great for reaching tight spaces. Pretty good – Although the vacuum is quite bulky and heavy, the suction on the thing is unbelievable. When I first purchased the Dyson I vacuumed a rug with my old vacuum then went over with the Dyson. Great – This vacuum cleaner is powerful to suck the hair and dust out of carpet with the use of turbine head, which my old vacuum cleaner (other brand) was not able to do that. Stronger than the V6 – I've had experience with the Dyson V6 and the DC50. I highly prefer this one as it is noticeably stronger with sucking in dirt on flat floors and carpets. Difficult to manoeuvre (for me) – The suction is great. I found this model heavier than expected. It was quite difficult to move on thick pile carpet, hard on my back. I have wooded floors in the living area and carpet in three bedrooms. I love Dyson products. This particular model was difficult to manoeuvre. I took my Dyson into the service centre and they did an adjustment. Unfortunately it didn't make much of a difference. Perhaps I'm not strong enough.  Show details

Great machine but loud – My experience with the Dyson was great, it had solid suction and its ability to pull apart and reach hard places made it very versatile. My only issue with it was that after about a month it gradually got louder until it reached an uncomfortable volume. cats. It picks up pet hair really well and has done a fabulous job for the last nine years. Although expensive at the time it has outlasted any other vacuum I have owned. Dyson certainly know how to make long-lasting vacuums that perform well under difficult conditions. Not great but adequate – I am happy with the vacuum overall, noise is not too loud, the only issue being suction is not that effective. I only have carpet and tiled floor, so I haven't had any experience with the issue shared by many peer reviewers about the hard floor. Works well, but dissapointing reliability – Works really well for both floor and wand use. The turbo brush stopped working after a couple of years and Dyson initially sent us out a new head which was great as the old one was badly worn. Unfortunately the problem turned out to be the electronics module and Dyson wanted nearly $100 + labour to fix it. Bought item from UK and replaced it myself. Totally unreasonable that you cant buy the parts in Australia direct from Dyson.  Show details
