2012 FG MK2 Wow, what a car – I did my homework and back in 2014 got my very first Falcon - a near new FG MK2 4L petrol. Most of my life I've owned Holden's and HSV's or driven company Toyota's. I can honestly say, that I love my Falcon. After nearly 3yrs, I still love it. Yes I changed the front brake rotors, but aside from normal logbook services it hasn't needed anything… Read more

else. Smooth, powerful, transmission is fantastic, handles great. My wife got to drive it when her Mazda CX-9 (2013) was getting a service and since then she keeps saying she prefers my Falcon. On long trips, it's effortless, seat position and support is great, fuel economy is fantastic. I got as low as 9.1 L/100 km's ave. and even towing a fully laden cage trailer loaded up for for 2 week family camping got 9.7 L/100 km's Melb to Lakes Entrance and return! I don't want to part with it - if I do it will be for another FG MK2 or FGX, but really I love driving my car still (now 150,000 km's) so will probably just keep it. So massive well done to Ford Australia. The engineering is second to none for the sticker price. Shame that Ford US didn't support any longer but GM is doing the same thing - so it's not alone. This is sadly, the end of an era. Falcon convert.

So, here's an update Aug 2024. Back in 2018 I sold my FG Mk2 and purchased a 3yr old FGX in smoke grey. Last of the mighty Aussie Fords. Wow! Definately saved the best to last. Sat nav & climate air as std. It had around 100 thou k'm's on it when I got it. Still have it, now 330 thou. It's been absolutely fantastic. I honestly don't want to sell it because it's so comfortable, powerful and it looks great. Barra for life.

Wouldn't rather drive anything else – I've owned a few Falcons now, and not once have I ever been disappointed My BA's have been bullet proof and my current FG XR6 Turbo I cannot speak highly enough about. On a highway trip to Launceston in hilly Tasmanja I averaged as low as 8.2 litres per 100km, that's better than what most can get from many 4 cylinder vehicles and 4X4 diesel… Read more

utes, yet none even come close to the smooth, effortless and reliable power of the XR6 Turbo.

For a 9 year old car it virtually looks so modern no one believes me when I mention it's age, the interior is still such a pleasant place to be with everything within reach with one of the most comfortable seats you'll find in a modern vehicle.

I cannot believe how these vehicles have been replaced by inferior 4X4 dual cabs, which don't have the braking performance, handling performance and ride comfort of a Falcon.

It's a shame our young generation won't get to appreciate Australian made cars for our country.

I'll never sell this one.

Long live the mighty Ford Falcon

Great engine and drivetrain, let down by poor build quality and interior – First off, I'll start with the good things - great powerful engine (XR6 trim), and great 6 speed automatic transmission. Very spacious interior and huge boot, can fit 5 adults with ease, and all their luggage in the boot. It did use a fair bit of fuel when driven hard especially in the city, was good on the highway though. Now the cons - poor… Read more

build quality (few interior rattles) and electrical issues throughout. In my time of owning the car (~2 years), I have had to replace all the window regulators, and have had a number of electrical issues - the ICC has stopped playing audio a number of times, every few times I restarted the car all the settings in the ICC and cluster (lighting, audio, stations) etc were lost, more concerning was the issue where the car just wouldn't start on first click, would think it is not in park even though it was. Lots of little issues plague these Fords, in my experience I am not the only one.

In the end, got tired of it and traded it in.

A highly underrated car – I have a 2009 Falcon G6E which I bought in 2011. This car is mainly used for long distance driving as I have a work supplied car but can only use it for work. My G6E is in metallic burgundy or what Ford called "Seduce" and it certainly seduced me. My car has only got 80,000km on the odometer and yet at 11 years of age it's still rattle and squeak… Read more

free. I drive it on bitumen and dirt roads and the dust sealing is as perfect as the day I bought it. The only problems I've had are the brake switch going faulty and the dual zone air conditioning blowing heat at the driver and cool at the passenger and yet both were set for the same temperature. That was fixed under warranty and has never failed again since. I too have fitted a separate auto transmission oil cooler as I don't trust the Ford method of cooling the transmission oil by routing it through the base of the radiator. My transmission oil goes now where near the radiator now. The car is fitted with the ZF 6HP 6 speed auto and gear changes are almost unnoticeable. The car has good power and excellent torque as previous Falcons had before it. The Falcon remains as far as I'm concerned a fantastic touring car and only very expensive large German cars would come close. I have the car serviced by a local independent mechanic after Ford serviced the car where it went in purring and came out coughing and spluttering. The G6E also came in turbo form but as far as I'm concerned it's not needed for only recently I overtook a road train or a semi with three trailers between Hillston and Cobar and I selected "power" and gave the car a boot full. It just blasted past like the semi was standing still. For me my FG G6E is a truly wonderful, powerful, safe, roomy, comfortable and economical for it's size car which for some reason Ford chose to hardly promote at all. Now the owner of the this car for 15 years and other than consumables and servicing no major problems yet. As with all Falcons the head lining is starting to sag but there are local auto upholstery businesses nearby. Only recently in far western NSW from Sydney and no problems whatsoever. Almost 100K on odometer and serviced at a local independent mechanic.

Another great example from ford Australia however I think I like the BA more – I don't drive this car every day, it's mostly used for long trips and towing, I understand all of the falcon range are great to drive, & yes even the LPG model. Show details

Poorly built – Poorly built car. Constant problems with tyres wearing prematurely due to wheel alignment. I've had the wheels aligned numerous times, which hasn't fixed the problem. Warped brake discs and vibrations while driving. I've had the ICC replaced due to failure and the drive shaft repaired due to a bearing problem. I have zero confidence in the build quality of this car. DO NOT BUY ONE!!!!  Show details

Falcon great car – Haven't had any issues. Comfortable 300000ks almost now, only general maintenance. Have thought about selling for hybrid as it's thirsty in comparison to a small hybrid around town. Doing a lot of highway driving I decided against. As the 5 litres per more hundred around town I save with hybrid only saves me $20 a month, so cheaper to keep. Show details

Great car but problems starting to surface – Have owned this car for 5 years and is my daily driver. A traction control fault has developed and stays on all the time now and my cruise control won't work. I have taken it to a Ford dealership and they have checked my wheel sensors and brake light switch which were all good but the problem has not been fixed. Don't know what to do now. Ford Falcon XR6 -> Great choice for a 2nd hand car – The later Ford Falcons were an underrated car when they were released. Considering the ongoing costs, Falcons are a good option if you are hunting around for a 2nd hand car in the 7 to 10 year old category. -> Grippy : good handling -> Cheap parts. Front wheel bearings do tend to wear out and need replacing. -> Cheap to run for the gas option… Read more

(Eco LPi) -> Good engine performance, no issue with the gas option

Handling could still be better compared to other cars but is still superior to the older Falcons. As long as you keep them serviced I Feel this is a fairly solid bet for 2nd hand car buyers.

Best Fuel Efficient Car – I recently bought a used 2012 ford falcon ecolpi which done 200k's. Its one of the best car I owned in terms of running costs and maintenance. It only cost me around 45 to 50 dollars depending on LPG price and get around 600kms easily. It's very powerful for a LPG only car and got 200kw. The only issue I found is the diff bushes are prone to crack… Read more

which I replaced with a Nolathane bush and never had issues with it. So if you own an Fg and sick of replacing diff bushes go for the Nolathane or other similar quality ones. It bit expensive compared to the normal rubber bushes but saves you money and time in the long run. So in short if anyone looking to buy a ecolpi dont hesitate just for it. Its a shame that we don't have anymore falcons

Used to drive to work and for leisure, about 25,000 km per year, bought it with 58,000 km on ODO. Initial service by Jarvis but seemed to be an expensive fluids only service, will now get serviced at willaston auto body repairs. No issues as yet.  Show details

Purchased a G6E – After having the base model FG falcon and having no issues at all covering around 240,000 klms, decided to a get a G6E. all history, etc.... Since having the g6e which is far more superior to the base FG I've covered around 20,000 klms in 3 months mainly country travel. The g6e is still tight at around 260,000 and the motor shows no signs of tiring. This engine with the 6 speed auto is a good match and moves quiet well and smooth, the interior is brilliant, no rattles, comfy and feels solid, still appears brand new. Love the stereo, reverse camera, sonic sensors and basically the look of this model (2009). I'd compare this model similar to some of the European cars Ive driven with the difference being these cars rarely fault.

Edit to add: 6 years since I posted, this vehicle now has 416,000. Hasnt skipped a beat. Still runs strong. Have replaced, Diff Bushes, all shocks, radiator, Cad Converter and obviously regular maintenance since 350,000 klms onwards. No rattles in cabin. Transmission still runs well. Engine fine. Major wear to date: Paint fading. Roof lining sagging.

Very smooth – I bought a 2009 fg xt in winter white with 160 000k for a very good price and it is a very good car and a better car than my previous VE commodore,as the car has a few kms on the clock I will tell of the associated problems with age,all that has gone wrong is the front discs were warped, roof lining was sagging and the boot light doesn't work right… Read more

and when I tried to fix it,a fuse blew causing a strange "transmission not in park" warning on dash but that went away when I replaced the blown 5a fuse, but boot light still doesn't work other than that the car is great and a real bargain except it uses lots of fuel.

a bit on the low side, so best to stick to good roads and beware of high kerbs and gutters. With regards to economy, it averaged 6.4 litres per 100/k driving from Adelaide to Melbourne, which would give it a touring range of 950+ km. Around the outer suburbs it averages 8.5. The RACV awarded the Ecoboost Falcon the C.O.T.Y. award back in 2012 when it was released. 6 years later, they have done a follow-up review in the April 2018 edition of Royal Auto magazine, and they still love it. I have just clocked up 69,000 Km and it still makes me smile when I get behind the wheel. It just has this kind of "road presence". The seating position, the arm-rests and the controls are just where you want them, and the ability to read a list of your mp3 songs in your USB stick up on the LCD screen puts the icing on the cake. One other thing to mention here is the 6-speed ZF transmission. It has "fuzzy logic" which means it gets to learn the way you drive, and it changes gear accordingly. If you tootle around like a pensioner then it makes for a very relaxing journey, but if you drive it like it's been stolen, well, let's just say you need to sit up and start concentrating. I've had other Falcons, (EA, EB, ED, BA, and BA Fairmont) but this one is just really nice. And in dark grey, it gets mistaken for the XR-6.

Iconic Aussie ute. Truly sad that they are no more – XR50T 6 speed manual ute. Bought this ute 3rd hand - i suspect the initial owners had not looked after it all that well. about. Fixed all of that and she looks a treat and the turboed engine at 270Kw/533Nm is a real gem. It embarrasses the badge-tragics in their over-priced german status symbols. I fell in love with the thing. The handling, while subject to the typical ute tail-happiness is a treat through the windies, the cabin interior is well designed and funky, clutch is light and progressive although it's a long throw between gears.

Then it started to play up with the engine immobiliser intermittently leaving the car un-startable. Ford forums on the Net suggested it was a less than optimal battery charge but I'd put a new battery in it. Put new batteries in the key fobs, had the ignition transponder tested, diagnostics didn't isolate the problem which would come and go until it finally called it quits entirely.

An auto-electrician thought it was likely the after-market theft alarm drip feeding off the battery and lessening its charge. He disconnected it and the issue has been resolved.

Practical performance at a bargain price. I love it again now that it's fully back in action. Almost as much fun as a motor bike.
