Holden Cruze JH (Sedan) SRi-V (2012-2016)

2013-2016 SRi's are criminally underrated – I've owned a 2013 Cruze SRI V for the last 2 years and despite the bad reviews I love it. Currently at 210,000 km and it drives like beauty. Never had any major issue with it (I do service it every 10,000 km). The 1.6 Turbo engine is actually quite fun, and far better than the gutless 1.8 Petrol or the 1.4 Turbo. Got a decent amount of power and… Read more
acceleration for the price too. I only paid $9000 back in 2020 yet it can beat VE SV6's that costs $5000-$10000 more.
Would never recommend a 2009-2012 Cruze, or any 1.8 Petrol Cruze (too gutless and boring) but the 2013-2016 1.6 Turbo SRi's are criminally underrated.
Holden you disappoint me – Any other problem any other Cruze owner has had and then some I bought it in Dec 2014 crossover model 2011 but a 3012 features .. it had 45k on the clock and one previous owner bought it from a Holden dealership. I traded my 2007 be commodore, as I needed a car that used less fuel. I also purchased the extended new car warranty. The car had been… Read more
serviced prior to purchase or so they said. In January 2016 problems started 63k the turbo died. My extended warranty that I paid for was not worth the paper it was written on, they voided all warranty cos it was 1500k out from their schedule (try getting a car serviced at Christmas/new year/ I managed to scrape the funds to get it repaired/replaced. At 65k the front rotors had to be replaced, 75k it started overheating, thermostat housing replaced, 80k water pump 90k resisvior,, loss of power is a common issue esp if aircon on, hoses split often it has been 140k now gearbox is sluggish, the only reason I still have it is due to just paying it off, and not in a financial position to purchase another car. I am a Holden girl but this car has cost me a fortune to buy and the constant repairs.
Do not buy this car – I would give this 0 stars if possible. Never EVER buy this car. If you see a used Cruze for sale - don’t do it no matter how good a deal it appears to be. We purchased this car brand new in 2013. For the first 2-3 years it was ok with no major issues. Then it just started falling apart. Coolant issues, engine light going on and off, constant oil… Read more
leaks amongst other issues. After years and thousands of dollars we recently discovered the turbo, water pump and cylinders were all falling apart/not working and the car has now been sent to the wreckers where it belongs. Every single mechanic we have seen cringes when would tell them we had a Holden Cruze. Just don’t do it.

Great Family Car – We have had our Cruze for almost 4yrs now and we still love it like the day we first bought it. Its been used for daily commute to work and up and down dirt roads with no dramas. We have put on well over 70,000km since purchasing and have had no major dramas with it. We get it serviced regularly to the service book recommendation and have had no… Read more
major issues mechanically. One of the best cars I have owned and would happily buy another again if I had to!
love it! – I have recently bought this car, a Holden Cruze 2012 SRI-V and i have found it a dream to drive through the Adelaide hills! Its a great size, affordable and a little luxury. Many people have said they are lemons but i think it all is to do with the petrol and driving style. I purchased mine with 95,000 kms on the clock and it drives a dream. At… Read more
first i though it was a lemon as the engine light came on with a code P0171 lean bank 1, so replaced the O2 sensors which fixed the problem. As they are a turbo petrol, premium fuel should be used, i found the previous owner had been running 91 for some time which cause them cars computer to register that as normal.. but will adjust as i keep using 98 since sensors being changed. Overall the car is smooth to drive, cheap to service, great on fuel, has power even with A/C on, spacious, heated seats.. love my little beep beep!
Great Car – What a great car. I don't know why they discontinued them. This is the best car I have driven in my life. Wasn't sure on buying a Holden when I first looked into the Cruze but when I took it for a test drive I was sold. It's the little things that helped make up my mind like the heated leather seats, auto headlights, hard drive for the radio so… Read more

Negative reviews
Save yourself the headaches and believe all the bad press – I downgraded my car so I could get a home loan. I wanted a cheap run about. I read all the reviews on the Cruze but thought surely they can't all be duds so took a chance and bought a Cruze. I got about 10000ks from it before I started having issues. I had the car for a year and half and in that time needed to replace the thermostat , water pumper… Read more
, turbo , numerous cooling hoses and oil pipes. After fixing all these the turbo started leaking again ! So enough was enough and I sold it. Purchased a Lancer which was made in the same year. I've now had the lancer for three years and not a single issue. Believe the reviews on the this poorly built car and save yourself some money and get something else.
Worst Car Ever – Worst car ever. That’s not fair... I’ve only owned 10 cars and only driven about 100 so I could be biased? Basically, day 1 of buying it ... needed to have calipers and breaks replaced within a week. Within warranty, I had the transmission changed twice. 1 part goes, go to Holden... and next time a part that sits right next to that part goes.… Read more
Clearly it’s pathetic engineering. What’s awesome is Holden plugs their computer in and says “the ECM is telling us it may be this, or it could also be (insert 50 other things)”. Grreeeaaaattt. Went to sell it, and no car dealership would give me any better than $2k trade in for a car that’s is road worthy and has only 90k on the clock!!! Avoid buying this car... I hope this saves someone a lot of hassles. What do I do now? Nail the bonnet shut and see how long it lasts ...

Horrible mechanical issues – Had the car for 3 days and the engine gave up on me, got it for the wife but isnt reliable enough for use of motor vehicle, worst car ever, terrible engineering, it's a nice looking car with a comfortable interior, heated seats, gps and such but to own this vehicle you'd have to be mad. It has been good to me – I must be lucky. Driving performance has always been good. The only issue has been a squeak in the driver's seat. It seems that the leather rubs against something which causes the squeak. Nice look both inside and out. The display is not as good and convenient as some comparable cars. It has been very reliable so far. No major issues at all. Show details
wish I never bought this car – I have spent a small fortune on this the most unreliable car since the TP Magna that I had 28 years ago I purchased it in Dec 2014 with 45000 Kms on the clock. The turbo died in January 2016, at 60000Km the Rotors on the front in Sept 2016 at 65000km, a coolant leak in March 2017 and now it just does not start. Should have got the Corolla … Read more
update: April 2019 the only reason I hang onto this car is I cannot afford to get rid of it, funny can't afford to keep the thing either, So in September 2018 I got the reservoir for the coolant replaced, as it had a leak, my guess is this was the leak all along, I should have got shares in Penrite, The airbag was replaced due to recall, and all was going well for a little while at least, the drivers side regulator for the window snapped and now I have blockers in holding the window up until I can afford to have that repaired and now a clunking grinding sound happening from the left rear wheel on some roads when I brake at low speed. and now the interior is falling to bits too, the "leather" trim is thin and flaking, OH and the paintwork on the exterior of the car is CRAP especially around the rear vision mirrors. Seriously this is the worst car, it does top the unreliable TP Magna in the worse stakes. waste of money
Update Sept 27, 2019, Still owe my lender $7700, went to see about getting a trade-in on a much more stable vehicle. and the dealer said due to the obscene amount of complaints about this model sedan, I would be lucky to get a $3000 trade-in. as NO one wants to buy them. Seriously a financial Loss of $4000. I hear that there may be a class action against Holden Bring it on, this car I paid a small fortune for. and the number of issues it has had I have paid plenty more than what it is worth. Turbo, Thermostate Housing, Water pump, Brake Rotors, Cooling system Leaks, Coolant Bottle and this is all UNDER 70KM on the clock. the driver's side window regulator, and possible problems coming up with the Transmission. Seems product review or Holden like positive reviews of this particular car, maybe the fuel efficiency can be comended cos it has spent more time in the workshop or on the back of a tow truck.
Update 28 January the car has been sitting in my driveway since July 2024, praying for a hail storm to total it. As to be honest it is worth more as an inurance claim than as a trade in as is. The compressor has gone and yet another oil leak (although small) mechanic quoted $5000 at least to repair, I have since heard they quote that much cos they dont really like to work on them. Doh! It is unviable to get it repaired even to trade in. Then i hear on the news about the class action against Holden for some of their other vehicles, i hope they will include the cruze and captiva to the list too. Such a shame it could have been a good 4 cylinder car. Cut my significant losses even though the body, interior and tyres are still good.
I love my car – My cars performance is great, good on fuel and handles well in all weather. I love the heated seats but dislike the position of the air vents behind the steering wheel so its hard to feel. Legroom is great and i get on average 500kms per tank of petrol but more on open roads. Show details

Great first car! – This is by far the best car i have driven and has been a great first car. very reliable, comfortable and handles really well. along with being fuel efficient the smaller features such as the leather heat seats and fold down back seats makes the car even better! this is a great first car, last car, family car, all round car. Dream car – Loved the car. Been using for almost 6 years now. I got the SRi-V vesion. The leather seats are great, entertainment system feels like its playing in a club. The handlind and driving is top class. I got a manual as I find it more fun to drive than an automatic. Its been really economical and faultless uptil now. Show details
Good sold car – Driving is nice. Good solid body and good paintwork. Bit slow to leave the green light but can pick up the pace pretty quickly soon after. The boot I said roomy and plenty of leg room. Mine has Built in sat Nav. Cannot upgrade maps from Holden which is pretty poor. Show details
Dunno why people are complaining – Holden Cruze 1.4L SRiV 6spd Manual This car has been a dream to drive since I got it in 2014, it doesn't miss a beat with plenty of get a up and go with its turbo it has better performance than it's 1.8L counterpart. The only reason this got 4 stars is simple it's not a Ford but at the time it was the only decent car in my price range.
OK at best & if you are lucky. Otherwise Disappointing – I bought a 2012 SRI-V in 2015, just out of warranty. I really wanted an Auto, but settled on a manual because out of the 8 Autos i did drive, they all drove terrible. The automatic transmissions are 6 speed, which is high for such a small engine. None of the transmissions were smooth, and they all over revved on the gear changing, which concerned… Read more
me, and i knew would annoy me.
The manual is a much better option and the cruze feels like a normal car with it.
what i like: I love the blue dash illumination, i like that the headlights turn on and off when you alarm the car to provide extra light in the car park or wherever, i like the push button start, and the keyless entry/exit.
The GPS system is good too, the screen is of high enough resolution to be able to clearly see roads and landmarks, and the colour scheme reminds me of google maps. i also really like the heated seats in winter, and the heater itself warms up super fast! which is very handy when you feel the cold like i do. Insurance is relatively cheap, and i also enjoy the integration with my phone, via USB. the display screen connects to my iphone through usb and shows the songs and playlists, and i can also control the music from my steering wheel which is much better than having to touch my phone to change songs all the time. The fuel economy is excellent too.
What i dont like: The car doesnt seem to have much space. i know its a small sedan anyway, but some brands manage to provide a spacious feel even when there isnt much, the cruze doesnt do that for me. I also hate that the interior is not resistant to scratches and scuffs. I have made a few here and there and for the life of me i cant get them out. My last car was 10 years old and the plastic and leather in that withstood everyday wear and tear much better than this 4 year old cruze.
But the real issue here: Mechanically. I too have had problems with my steering column lock, i had to replace the 'module' and it could only be done by holden. Being australian made, i thought parts would be cheap.. well not for this. The new module cost me $500 plus the tow! which made me furious, because the streering column lock was fine, it would lock and unlock, and did everything it should have. except for the fact, when you get that error, stupid holden built a inhibitor into the software preventing you from starting the car! what has an electrical steering column lock error got to do with the mechanics of the lock, and preventing you from driving!? Anyway, that was fixed and they advised me not to touch or bump the steering wheel as i get into the car, and that when i park, dont have my front tyres making contact with anything (as in the kerb) because those things 'trigger' problems with the steering column. Talk about sensitive.. not long after, i was seeing orange oil in my driveway, this time i needed a new water pump. huh? the car isnt even 4 years old, its done 35000kms.. how can there be a problem with the water pump? well there was, and that was another $800. my mechanic said to me the cruze is the new holden camira (if you remember those) they have a lot of electrical problems, and the cars are 'wrecks' in his words. after my experience i would tend to agree.
Constant issues – We have a major issue with steering column lock then the car won't start. We have to disconnect battery leave for 10 minutes then try to start. This is now happening on a daily basis and apparently Holden have no idea why. This is just one of many issues with this car. Show details
Fantastic. Very happy – Had this car for 4 years now from new. Extremely happy with the car. A pleasure to drive. Just clocked over 120xxx k's. Have not had one issue with it and still going strong. Very smooth, comfortable and quiet and handles great. Average 7L per 100 k's. I will be trading in for the next model at the start of next year without hesitation. Show details
Holden Cruize --Rotton egg in market – My 2012 Holden Cruize SRi has almost similar issue which many of you have noted like oil leakage....transmission...turbo replacement....Dealer wants me to pay for all this...as it's 4 years and no warranty.... ...bad service history....no valid point...West city Holden and Holden call center together trying to bully and reap off our money.....Very stressed...is this a start of a problem....many road side steering locks and recalls happened.....I should have done something then...Can we take them to consumer court together....so many people having same problems and financial loss..what is consumer court for ? Please advise what can be done? I simply feel dealers and Holden company together have hand in gloves.
Multiple issues...remember quality and brand is important. Never buy Holden Products and most dealers are only good when you are going first time to buy the car and truly after service is complete rip off......and Holden call center have standard same answers....typing standard answers to each complaint.....we must fight this battle together ....can someone start the battle. Turbo and many other parts gone merely in 4 years...big loss of $$$$$$

Lemon lemon lemon – Do not buy a Holden Cruze! I don't think I could fit my list of issues on this page, so I will summarise for you... We bought a brand new SRi-V from Brisbane for $31k in 2012. From the first day we picked it up, it was a DISASTER. During the 6 hour drive home the air conditioning died and what followed was ongoing aircon issues (new condenser,… Read more
new unit, multiple trips to the local dealer and new lines - don't know the technical terms here). But that wasn't all that was going wrong with our little Cruze... The bumper bar had to be re-sprayed as the paint was pealing after 12 months, the mirrors also needed replacing as were turning white, the ceiling was falling down and needed to be replaced, the brakes were a constant worry as they failed on a few occasions.
The local dealer was very unprofessional and stated that if I had purchased it there I wouldn't have had any issues (not likely given the other reviews I've seen). Holden's customer service was not helpful.
In the end, after less than 24 months I traded it in for a Toyota. Loosing a LOT of money. Pllleeeeaase do not buy a Holden Cruze, you might as well burn your money. Yes they look very nice, leather seats and shiny knobs are exciting but it's an illusion! I don't feel that I can convey the enormity of our dramas with this car and Holden. Just don't do it!
2013 Holden Cruze SRi-V – As a young 21 yr old female, I worked long and hard to save for this car. The first one I owned was amazing! peeled off, ah the tint bubbled! at its 1000km service Holden charged me $80 bucks for broken valve because it's not covered in the warranty! And now at 25,000km the transmission is slipping!! And the computer won't always start!
I have written to Holden due the dealership delivery problems and gone to social media however there is no complaints section in Holden Australia that actually investigate claims! All they can do is say sorry which doesn't help!!
2011 SRi-V is a dud/cost me 000's – Bought in November 2011 brand new. After 6 months the electrics went weird and the car wouldn't start. I had it towed 4 times to the dealership (I have photos and video), and did 3 services and 3 recalls on the car, I also took the car in 20+ times. I remember getting the car towed in, it getting dragged off the tray, and when I came back, they… Read more
told me there wasn't anything wrong with the car. The car wouldn't start and there is a 3 second pick up from when I put my foot down. I rang up Holden customer care, and they said I had only been to the dealership twice and had no records of being to the dealership outside of this. I sent in photos and wrote massive emails/letters. To no avail.
I took the car off lease (cost me $8k), and sold it for $6k below value to get rid of it. I also lost $5k+ as I also run a small business. So $20k later, I moved onto a new car. After 18 months of complaining, I got 2x$50 Caltex fuel cards, and guess what? There wasn't any money on them.
As a result, as a school teacher, I created a power point about my car and I show all of my students the dramas I had when I owned the car (teaching legal studies, business studies and commerce). I have to far showed over 400 kids this power point. I told Holden about this, and they don't care.
Ripped Off – I purchased my 2011 SRi-V Cruze in Dec 2011. I have had problems with the breaks failing, only to find out there is a recall on this problem, the BlueTooth is No good, and is impossible for people to hear and understand you. I have taken it back several times only to be told there is nothing wrong with it when they use it. The worst thing happened… Read more
yesterday, I drove it home and got to my driveway and it made a horrendous noise. So bad it sounded like the engine blew up. It was overdue for a service but NO oil lights or warning lights on dash came on at all or had showed up previously. To my amazement , after getting it towed to the nearest Holden dealer I was phoned to be told that the Turbo has blown up and shredded the motor. I was also told there was hardly any oil in my car and that the remaining oil was sludgy. This apparently is the reason the turbo has failed, because there was hardly any oil in my car. Not once did I have a warning light on my dash for low oil. When I posed this question to Holden they just said oh well there was enough oil to register on the bottom of the stick so that's why you wouldn't have had a dash warning light come on!! Go figure??????? Low oil has apparently caused my car to blow up but I shouldn't expect a oil warning light to come on because the oil on the dipstick wasn't low enough for the warning light to register??!!!
My car is just 2 1/2 yrs old is still under warranty and has done 56 thousand K's! And I've been told it's going to cost me $14 000 to fix!! And they won't cover it by Warranty because I have missed a service. This is ridiculous!! How could this happen and there not be a warning light on my dash?? Would love to know if anyone else has had this type of problem with their Cruze, maybe we could ban together and get something done.

The car is comfortable to drive, handles very well for a car of it's size and price and the performance is impressive without being unruly.
The only negatives are that the fuel economy is a little on the high side, but after coming from an unreliable and expensive to maintain BMW 3 series, this doesn't phase me. Also, the addition of an internal boot release and driver footrest would have been worthwhile additions. Other than these minor niggles, I'm very happy with my purchase.
Overall, I can highly recommend the SRi-V version of the Cruze for it's great feature list, great performance, smart looks and very competitive price. Sharp pricing, great feature list, good performance
Dud from 6 months in – Reading some of the other reviews has given me new ammo to contact the ombudsman. I had numerous issues from within first 6 months of owning my manual MY12 Cruze SRi-V including major no remote detected issues, rattling sounds while in 5th or 6th gear, door window motor rattling, then a couple of recalls which got fixed so all fine. I love the firm ride, handling feels like its stuck to the road in a big safe way, absolute power of the engine, with no hesitation and the turbo delay is very small and when it kicks in, it's back in the seat you go.
All items are functional and more lights and buttons than a 747. Steering wheel controls are very convenient and easy to use. Cruise control seems refined and works (no breaking or gear changing down that I have noticed yet to slow the car) and while there is a lot of black plastic it seems to be ok for me.
Of course our expectations are based on previous cars mainly.
Wife loves the heat in the seats (bad back pain so might give her relief for a while which is a big bonus). Lots of dash and infotainment options. Still learning that the speedo is not in the middle (I have driven since before 16 when it was legal to drive on the road and now I am 60 and in all that time the speedo is in the middle). After 3 days I think we have it sussed learning to set the centre lcd display to what I want and then use the speedo off to the rhs. However the steering wheel is a little restrictive in the view but I am getting used to it.
Time will tell how it goes in the reliability stakes and fuel economy.
Safety feels good and not obtrusive with many air bags, stick to the road suspension and tyres and just all round a very drivable car.
Very very quiet ride and the RE60A Bridgestone tyres have a good reputation and review status.
All in all we are amazed and impressed with this car. Value, ride, handling, safety. Highish fuel economy.

identify the cause. Their only recommendation was to use high octane fuel, funny that as the lowest grade can be E10 which I refuse to use anyhow. Running it on 95 is better but hadn't fixed the problem. Secondly, an ongoing knock or rattle from the left hand rear suspension over bumps or indents in the road... Early days reports showed a fault with the incorrect brake pads fitted but the the noise persists. The automatic gearbox, well, apart from being one of the most indecisive I have driven in a car, at now 40000km it has developed a whiring or whining noise at 36-42km/h (1200rpm) in 3rd and 4th gear. Up shift from 2nd to 3rd can be sticky and sloppy and the same for 4th to 5th. Downshift from 6th to 5th and 4th to 3rd and its rough and violent, jerks the car forward. I had the car serviced by Midas at 40k (which is prior to the recommended 45k log bool service) and had the transmission fluid changed. Though they reported the fluid was VERY dirty, the slipping and jerking continues. The push button start and a related Service Steering Column message continues to appear at intermittent times trying to start the car, and the prevents it from starting. The car was taken to Holden a while back to have an update applied but... So the car is going back in again to the dealer for the 6th time... Ok so a positive or two...? The fuel consumption is good with 7.5l per 100km around Sydney and on the open road it achieved 5.7l per 100km. The Sat Nav and Seat Warmers are a delight too. Sat Nav and Heated Seats Ongoing issues as noted above and Holden are unsure of the causes... So much for a 5 warranty. Doesn't really mean much.

purchased numerous new cars in the past 30 years and the advice from dealers to wait until car and engine settles in is ridiculous.
Fuel consumption since purchase has been terrible and with cost of fuel up around $1.35 ltr, I am thinking I have made quite a mistake in decision to buy Aussie built car.
I get 8l per 100ks around town and 9 on the highway
Good little fuel efficient sporty car – Bought the 2012 1.4L turbo SRi-V manual. Have done about 17.000 km's so far without problems. Fuel consumption is excellent with about 6.6l/100km in a sporty driving style with aircon running. Suspension is one of the best I ever experienced. The extras coming with the SRi-V model are useful and working well (touch screen, sat nav, bluetooth,… Read more
HDD, etc). Large boot space. Although fuel efficient this car has problems starting at steep hills or going up steep driveways in a very low speed. This might be due to the small engine size (1.4L) and you have to be prepared to use the clutch to the extreme. Therefore not recommended for towing (this might be different with the Diesel).
Update:
Car is 5 years now and has done about 50k kilometres. The power lag at low speed (described above) has been mostly resolved by a chip update (part of a recall).
The original tyre tread has to be replaced at around 60k kilometres. Had regular services and no extra costs in repairs so far. Engine still nice and responsive with an average of 7-8litres/100km (95% city driving).
Following items seem to have issues and have been replaced under warranty:
Side mirror cover plates (black plastic) showed heavy UV fading after 3-4 years. Roof antenna replaced (screw in) after it hit a tree branch. Multiple error messages regarding steering wheel lock. It always disappeared after restart. At last service I did mention this again and some of the automatic door window motors were replaced (which supposedly caused this issue). The warning has not been displayed since. Sporty, fuel efficient, excellent suspension Engine size slightly small, no auto aircon
Happy Owner – Bought this car new in November 2011 after looking around at other vehicles of this class. I drove both the 1.8 and 1.4 demo cars and decided I could run faster than the 1.8. Ended up buying an SRi-V auto. Thought I had made a big mistake as the turbo lag was terrible and the fuel consumption was no better. Anyway after 7000 ks it is a different… Read more · 2
car with plenty of power and it averages around 7.1-7.2 litres per 100 in a mixture of city/highway driving. It handles gravel roads well without pouring dust in through the door and boot seals which is something my previous car did in summer.
Body is tight and it is very quiet on bitumen roads. My family live up the top of the Perth hills and it has no trouble accelerating up them.
Very happy with the car even though I was told by "experts" that they were junk and I was wasting my money. Don't know why they don't make the 1.4 turbo standard on the base models. Quiet, nice to drive, plenty of power, smooth auto, fuel consumption, finish. Floor carpets could be better, should have drivers foot rest, aircon outlets for rear passengers.
