Needs constant repairs – We own a 2013 model in Blue with 83,000km's travelled so far. The car has needed the following repairs/replacements so far; - Tail light holders. Tail lights where intermittent. - Body Control module. This controls the interior accessories such as radio, interior light, accessories socket etc. - EGR valve & ECM sensor. Caused shuddering at… Read more

idle. Took the dealer some time to repair as the two items faults combined to make diagnosis difficult.

- Fuel pump. Should produce 65psi pressure, ours was 30psi.

- Right hand engine mount.

- Front disc rotors need replacing after 83,000km's

Another problem with this car is the paint. It's soft, thin, absorbs dirt and chips very easily. I've got a fair amount of experience detailing cars from owning a show car for many years.

This mazda is covered in stone chips, probably 3 times more than my wife's previous car had from the same daily journey over the same time & Km's. When you look at the chips that go thru to metal, there is very little thickness to the paint compared to our other car. I'm constantly using touch up paint to prevent rust spots from the chips.

When the car is fault free, it's a good car given it's price point. It's easy to park, reverse, handles and brakes well. The air conditioner is weak, has a lot of road noise and the head lights could be better.

I Have to agree that it is not economical. It's fuel consumption is almost identical to our other car, a 2010 Corolla sedan which is a larger car with a bigger engine. If anything, the Madza 2 uses more petrol than the corolla.

The interior trim has held up well with nothing falling off or breaking.

We've had three flat tyres with this mazda 2, it's easy to change the tyre on but the full size spare won't fit in the wheel well, it has to go in the cargo space.

Fantastic city runaround, affordable motoring – I bought the Mazda2 Neo as an economical runaround to replace a 2008 Mazda6, to save on maintenance and fuel costs whilst and ease the stress of parking in tight inner city streets. I owned a brand new 2 Maxx in 2007, so i had fond memories of an easy ownership. The driving experience is great. With light controls, well weighted steering and a… Read more

slick 5 speed manual gearbox, the DE Mazda2 is a great city companion. It's a breeze to park, albeit the D pillars and high window line can hinder visibility slightly.

My particularly model is quite basic, with AUX input, power windows/mirrors, remote keyless entry and ABS / electronic stability control being the standout features, however there is little to go wrong and nothing in the way of a simple driving experience. I would recommend purchasing a 2012 onwards model, as you'll get cruise control and steering wheel buttons, as well as 6 airbags in all trims. Also note, 2007 - 2009 models are built in Japan. 2010 is Thailand (mine) and 2011+ is back to Japan. I'd recommend the later Japanese years.

Service costs generally hover at the $180-220 mark every 6 months, with regular replacements such as tyres, battery, drive belt, etc. Throughout 2 years and 38,000kms, it's averaged 7.14L/100km (generally 500kms to a tank). The best i've seen is 6.12L/100km, worst 8.35L/100km with heavy city driving and constant A/C.

Issues experienced:

- Paint quality (typical Mazda) - Bonnet paint has started to peel in small spots, worsening slowly over time.

- A/C not very efficient at cooling quickly on a hot summer day. It also drains the power from the engine considerably. I prefer windows open motoring now. A lighter exterior colour may help with this - mine is Metro grey.

- Poor lumbar support on drivers seat - you really feel it from about 45 minutes into a drive - I use a folded towel. I wouldn't recommend this generation 2 for long distance commuting

- Road noise and vibrations enter the cabin at speed and the 1.5L engine is always on song - although it sounds much better than a Yaris.

- No cruise control or connectivity (newer models improve on this)

Overall, it's extremely dependable motoring. From weekend Bunnings trips to beach runs and Carpark wars, the 2 has never mechanically disappointed. It's a perfect first car (Maxx or Genki spec with extra airbags) or second runabout, especially in manual. It's a hard car to replace because it does everything I need.

Solid love for this car! – If I could give 6 stars I would! Bought brand new in 2007 and have had two mishaps with it. One being a rear end to a sedan, and the other getting trapped in flood waters which put my car to sleep for 1.5 days! Apart from these two incidents which were my own fault- I have had no major incident with it. The minor damage easily fixed and back to… Read more

its amazing self. Even in the years after the flooding incident- I expected there to be more issues- but 4 years down the line- NOTHING!

I absolutely adore this Mazda and don't feel the need (9 years later) to upgrade or move on- it has been very loyal to me and a dream to drive. Cost effective, smooth but fiery when it needs to be, easily cleaned interior, plenty of leg room (im 5'9) and passengers always comment about the leg room in the back too, dashboard does scuff and mark if you're boisterous with it (be aware of which cleaning products/cloth you use), always starts up without a problem, never overheated even in 40 plus degrees driving long distance, boot has plenty of room. Overall- highly highly recommend this little buzz box!

A girlfriend of mine bought a brand new hatchback (wont name company!) in the the same year as me- and she had problem after problem. She ended up selling it after 5 years. This solidified how amazing and staunch this Mazda is!

Love my baby Mazda 2 – Bought this baby brand new in 2010 at Mazda Dealer Edwardstown and I still love it. It's an economical little hatch that takes me to A to Z everyday, and has plenty of room to store groceries. I can fold down the chairs to give it more room when needed. Needless to say it's been reliable I haven't had any issues with it breaking down on the road. Show details

I love my Mazda 2! – I have had my Mazda 2 for 5 years and I love it. I bought it brand new and have never had any issues with it. It is the right size and would definitely recommend it to anyone, as it is reliable and has enough space. I also find that the dealerships around Adelaide are good to deal with.  Show details

Great small car! Petrol consumption is awful! – Love the feel of the Mazda 2, great handling and braking and a perfect small car! However the petrol consumption is that of a 30 year old V8 engine and seems to be a very common problem with the model. Within 2 years the car had to be rewired and the brakes failed due to bad fluid put in from new purchase! Wouldn't recommend the Mazda 2!  Show details

Decent little city car – It's not going to see the world on fire in terms of driving experience but it's pretty good compared to Toyota Yaris and slightly older Toyota Echo I drove extensively in my uni days. Good interior and reliability but service costs were slightly higher than I was imagining after previous Toyota I had.  Show details

Perfect little car – I’ve always had larger commodores so making the switch to a little hatch was a big change but I haven’t regretted it one bit. I brought a used ‘07 DE series 1 Genki early 2019 for 4200 with 130k on the clock. For a 14 year old car she still goes great! The suspension is a little stiff and there’s a bit of road noise which you can definitely hear even more when the back seats are folded down but other then that, I honestly can’t point out any other flaws. A great safe little car :)

Not in the quality expected – Got one with just over 100k on the clock but having difficulties with power steering and seatbelt pre tention sensor. These kind of issues are not expected with a reputable japanese manufacturer and repair cost would be more than 2000$ atleast. Never buy Mazda again :( Going back for Toyota. Show details

Perfect zippy little car – This is my first car (bought second hand) and I absolutely love it. It can store a surprising amount of things, and has a large boot space for a small hatchback. I have never had any issues with this vehicle, it is very reliable and has been on a number of large road trips. It costs about $50 to fill up and goes a long way with it. Despite being two doors, there is still ample leg space for backseat passengers.  Show details

Nice little niffy car – Got this as a second car for my wife to learn driving. The drive and handling is pretty good, and the car corners well. Easy to park in city and tight spaces and is pretty niffy car overall. However, petrol consumption is rather high at around 9 - 10L /100km, perhaps due to age coming to 10 years old.  Show details

love this car – This is a great little car. It drives really well. It is a manual and the gear change is great and smooth. The small issue is only from 1st to 2nd gear where it is a bit tougher. It is small so it is easy to park. The fuel consumption is good as we can fill a tank on $40.00 (dependant on fuel price on the day) I would recommend this car. It is the second mazda we have bought. (Bought a mazda 3 also). It is safe and reliable.  Show details

Great first car – Great fuel efficient car. Makes a great first car but doesn't have a lot of safety features maybe due to the range I got. Manual Mazda 2010 4 door sedan – Incredibly cheap to run, I go through about a tank a month (although I don't drive much). This particular model has a 5 star safety rating, which is great. Seriously, if you don't need a bigger car or 4wd (and you really don't...), I recommend the Mazda 2. Bit of a squish with 5 people in the car though.

The boot is phenomenally large, it's like those magical cars from Harry Potter where it's bigger on the inside than it looks on the outside.

Only has 70k on the clock so far, but no issue at all so far (I got it 2ndhand.)

Love this car - especially the sedan model over the hatchback, very pleasing on the eye.

Love this car so much! – This car is amazing. I have found it to be very reliable and economic. Having the sedan definitely provides a lot more boot space, and a small amount of room in the back seats. It has a nice interior. I have found the driving experience to be of high standard, however you still have a bit of noise that you would expect from a medium priced car. Overall, I have found this car to be my perfect first car, and have loved driving it.  Show details

Ticks most of the boxes – I've owned a number of small cars in the past (Nissan Pulsar, Suzuki Swift, Toyota Vitz) and I would definitely rate the Mazda 2 above all of them. appreciate having stability control and side/curtain airbags.

I have had no problems with fuel consumption, I do a lot of short trips around town with a bit of motorway on the weekends and it's usually under 7L/100km. A fifth gear would be handy on the motorway to get the fuel consumption down but then this is a budget car. Around town it is great, easy to park and quick off the mark. On the open road it could do with a bit more power but it sits pretty comfortably at 100km/h.

Overall though I am very happy with the car, it's nice to own a car where everything just works as it should do.

very disappointed with fuel consumption – uses way too much petrol for the size of engine. I can not go 530 km with one tank. same size cars 25 years ago were using just over half amount per kilometer ???? what it is yet. Should have bought a Hyunday, uses 1/2 the petrol and performs better. AND if there would have been a VW dealer at prices they sell now -- it would have been a Polo 100%. I had several Golfs and Polos when I was back in Europe. The Mazda is WORLDS behind a Polo {or a Hyunday for that matter} which is 25 years older. The reason why I bought it was because it handles well and has a better safety record than the Ford, Holden and Toyota, Will never buy Mazda again
