My son bought a Mazda cx5, 2017 model. Engine smoke, lost power. Go to Mazda rockdale service. Must replace Engine. Cost 8700. He can't afford it. Go to other mechanic. No one want to repair it. At last find one, charge 7800, but couldn't do the job. I advise all my friends, relatives: never buy mazda, terrible car. I will say this all my life. Never mazda. Show details

Mazda, No Zoom, Zoom, No Care – This is about Mazda appalling customer care and even worse dealership service. I like the car, second one I have owned, it will be the last because of this. The Mazda is two years old, 5 year warranty, low mileage. The rear wheel trim came loose, flapping around in the wind. I secured it with duct tape, and replaced a screw fitting that had come… Read more

out in order to eliminate further damage and the whole trim ripping off. I went to Mazda dealership at South Nowra, asked for it to be repaired under warranty. We will take a look, take some photos and forward to Mazda for approval the dealership said. Should be ok as it doesn’t indicate any wilful damage. We will repair it next service. 2 months later I have received no call back, service is due so I phoned up. We haven’t heard back from Mazda was the reply. Bring in the car for service, we’ll fix it. I turn up, there’s a new Service Manager. No we cannot fix it I will have to refer it to Mazda I’m advised abruptly. Service carried out, no we haven’t submitted the claim you will have to come back. We can replace it for around $500. But it’s clearly a warranty issue I say. No we cannot fix it unless approved by Mazda. We will send the photos again showing there is no obvious wilful damage. I follow up again 2 months on, still no reply. It’s now 12 months and 4 follow ups since I reported the fault. I have no resolution, never received a call except those I made and the Nowra dealership refuses to address it. Very, very sad Mazda. I shall continue to relate this lack of customer care and warranty failure until I receive at least a call why this is not being addressed.

Engine Oil Bad Issue – If you use your car on 15 min trip, don’t buy it!! Mazda technicians say it is normal for Mazda have a high oil level if you don’t do long trips everyday. I see as a very bad issue, but they say it’s the way it is. So think twice before taking your car to service every 4 months to fix what they call normal! It’s very annoying, frustrating and a complete waste of time, once your warranty runs off, you’ll be paying it from your own pocket! Show details

As far as small SUVs go, it's hard to beat the CX-5 for power, features and space – Mazda’s build quality is certainly above par. Mazda’s solid construction helps make it feel more luxurious than the likes of Subaru and Toyota, especially when it comes to the materials and finishes used in the CX-5. Our ‘Akera’ model of the CX-5 had some additional flair in the form of Nappa leather seats. However, the door handles, climate… Read more

controls and volume buttons all added to a higher sense of build quality. The way these elements felt weighty, crisp and slick to engage with were the reasons why the CX-5 felt like it had a superior quality to its construction.

Compared to a Subaru, the Mazda oozes attention to detail making it more appealing to those who would appreciate that. The small interactions with this car scratch a certain itch in my mind, like adjusting the temperature with high quality metal dials that turn with a satisfying ‘click’.

The AWD Akera trim of the CX-5 starts from $55,842 drive away.

To be honest, that’s a fair price for the features you’re getting and the amount of car you’re receiving. I appreciate Mazda restraining from heading north of the $60,000 range.

You can start the range for $45,190 drive-away with the entry-level Maxx Sport trim, but I’d recommend getting the most out of your CX-5 with something like the GT SP or the Akera.

Mazda offers a 5 year/unlimited kilometre warranty with the CX-5, and 5 capped price services.

Servicing intervals are 10,000km apart, which can seem a little short compared to the likes of Subaru.

Despite featuring twin tail pipes and a turbocharged motor, this is just as quiet as you’d expect a family SUV to be.

I absolutely adored the sound isolation provided by the CX-5. It was levels above its competition, preventing outside noise from bleeding into the cabin.

The upgraded speakers inside were a delight to listen to, but I’m not sure that should be the sole reason why you’d spend more money on going up the CX-5 range.

It was clear the CX-5 was trying to emulate the buttery braking experience found in the CX-8 and MX-30 Electric. It didn’t quite achieve that same status.

Rather, pushing the brake pedal felt predictable and perfectly responsive to your inputs, but there was a bit more pitch in the body when decelerating.

This CX-5 was fitted with the most powerful engine option you can get: a 2.5L turbocharged petrol four-cylinder.

Producing 170kW and 420Nm, with power being sent through all four wheels, this is one of the faster SUVs in its class. VW and Cupra take the crown when it comes to the quickest SUV options at this price point.

With more power than cars like the Subaru Outback and the RAV 4, you can ride the wave of torque without having to dig deep into the accelerator pedal.

The 6-speed automatic transmission provides smooth and seamless shifts, but is lacking a few gears that are usually found in other SUVs.

A 6-speed seems a little lacking on paper, but I never found the CX-5 to be high in the rev range at highway speeds. The ratios are clearly tuned for optimal efficiency and power delivery, seeing as it’s not ultra exciting to engage with.

Riding on larger 19-inch alloy wheels, the road can be felt just that little bit more through the cabin. It’s a lot better than some other SUVs that opt for 20-inch wheels, but it’s going to feel a little more stiff than 18-inch wheel options.

The CX-5 feels more sporty and engaging than other SUVs in this category thanks to the suspension and steering. It’s clear why most people consider Mazda more fun to drive.

Corners can be a bit of entertainment too. However, I can’t help but feel there’s just a little lacking in the driving experience from the engine and gearbox.

There’s enough ground clearance to confidently head into Off-Road mode too. It’s not enough to traverse over really deep mud ruts or get lost on the beach, but is rather a handy mode to head to a farm house or your favourite campground.

This SkyActiv motor returned figures around the 10L per 100km mark. That’s a fine and respectable figure for an SUV of this size and power.

The Mazda CX-5 doesn’t have an interior as visually striking as Kia’s new cars, but it has a restrained and minimalist finish that hones in on the right things.

There are three displays, a drivers display (flanked by analogue dials) and a central 10.12-inch infotainment non-touch screen.

The interior is simple, but effective. The controls are easy to navigate and understand, and there’s little to no learning curve to using them.

I love the clean, parallel lines and the back to basics approach of the interior. More impressive though is the use of materials; rich Nappa leather, stitching, and high quality switchgear elevate the interior design, pushing it above the likes of Toyota.

The Subaru Forester has the upper hand when it comes to interior storage, but the CX-5 isn’t too far behind.

An automatic tailgate reveals a boxy, flat load area. That’s good enough for 438L of cargo. Fold the seats down in a 40:20:40 configuration, and you’ll see just over 1,340L of cargo space. It’s not the biggest SUV, but at least you can make the most of the internal space by folding just that middle seat down.

However, there’s a slight problem by just folding that middle seat, or having someone sit in it, as the controls for the rear heated seats and USB port are found in the centre arm rest. It’s a strange oversight from the company that pays great attention to the small details in their cars.

Certainly consider it against the likes of the Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV 4 and VW Tiguan, as the CX-5 might not appeal to all. You might need more boot space (Forester), prefer more power (Tiguan) or want a hybrid drivetrain (RAV 4). But for the best blend of all of the above, the CX-5 is the ideal ‘just right’ option for many.

Average – We got the bottom of the range model, and it's a bit average. The engine is the smaller option and sounds like a sewing machine when revved up, and is very weak; very poor option. We are in Cairns and so appreciate the air-con; no vents in the back. The rest of it is fine. Show details

Superb car – On a whim, I took a 2020 Akera for a test drive and was so impressed, I bought it then and there on the spot. The car is so nice to drive. It is smooth and handles really well. which has a higher centre of gravity.

The ventilated seats were a very welcome addition when we moved to the top-end of Western Australia where the temperatures barely drop below 30 degrees year round. The sound system is great but using the knob to control the head unit took a bit of getting used to and it can be a bit fiddly at times.

My only complaint is that I found the drivers seat to be supremely uncomfortable. I have managed to find a position which isn't so bad but I can't drive the car for long periods of time as the bolster digs into the side of my leg and becomes very uncomfortable after a while. My husband has no problems with the seat though.

Incredible Luxury without breaking the bank – Been using this car for 2 years now. Had always been with Honda cars before. Incredible features like the Bose music system, the Nappa interiors, HUD, ventilated seats, heated steering wheel, etc 3. Seeing in believing. One has to be inside a Mazda to see how brilliant is the design and interiors compared to other Japanese brands like Honda and Toyota.

What could be better - 1. Fuel economy. But this is true for all fuel-hungry SUVs. I get around 11L/100Km in everyday use. Highways 8L/100km

Stylish, luxurious and all-rounder good vehicle – I upgrade from a 2010 Mazda 2 to a top of the range CX-5 Akera in 2018 - a big jump overall in engine, size and standard features and I have almost no regrets. The servicing price is always going to be pricey with a Mazda and would be great if they brought in capped price servicing like other car makers. Now that I have had this vehicle for 4… Read more

years I can give a decent review. The upgrade from a small hatch to a "medium" suv was very easy. The engine size is perfect for the vehicle and has no trouble getting to speed. It is designed incredibly well and you can tell considering how popular the vehicles are when you see them around. One minor concern is the back aircon isn't very forceful so even though I do not currently have children I would be concerned about the force of airflow in the back. Good room for 3 adults in the back regardless. Great boot space.

Overall this is a vehicle I plan on having for another 8-10 years. The servicing costs are roughly between $300-$500 dependent on type on service. I waited for Mazda to upgrade their design from the hideous infotainment system that was ingrained in the dash to be the top of the dash and when they finally did that was one of the deciding points on the purchase. The only other issue is that alot of the range in 2018 had apple car play as standard yet the cx-5 did not - and low and behold the year after purchase it was brought in as standard which is frustrating - now if I want to upgrade it is $500 - a significant price which makes you think before upgrading. Overall I will eventually upgrade to this (maybe in another year or two) but I think if you have purchased a vehicle that then has that standard like apple car play brought in a year later it should be a discounted price to upgrade - $250 would be adequate.

My real experience with Mazda Australia and Penfold Burwood after getting my CX-5 - 4 days with engine issue – I am a fan of CX-5 before I meet below so sad story with Mazda in Australia. car in other brand.

Sick experience with Mazda AU, and Penfold Burwood Dealer: I buy a brand new CX-5 Akera, 2.5L Turbo Petrol in Nov, 2019, the engine has issue after 4 days around 30KM drive. Mazda request me to drive it back to Penfold. After few days they said the engine DO have issue and there is a part of the engine need to be changed, the part will be delivered in few day, and Penfold mentioned this is their first time to change this part engine...

I am not car specialist and I feel so anxiety cause I don't know if the car is still safe after changing engine, so that's why I buy a brand new instead of used car. I reject to replace the engine, instead I request AU Mazda to give me a new car cause this one I only drive 4 days but have engine issue, it's a bad quality product.

Mazda said we will consider to change a new car for you cause you only drive 4 days, but you need to agree fix it first. Then I agreed. Then after 2 weeks Penfold Burwood call me that the car is fixed after changing the part engine (VVT part for sure and something part I cannot remember all). I said OK, but I reject to get the car cause I am waiting for AU Mazda to give a new. And they said YES, usually this kind of issue happen in one week Mazda should give you a new car...then I am confidence I will get a new car.

After another 2 weeks AU Mazda call me --- Look, it's very very very rude: a guy said that he is a case manager, he is responsible for delivering a decision to me: they reject to give a new car to me, reason:the engine issue is identified fixed already.

That guy is so so so rude. I asked who did the decision, who should I contact if I am not happy with this result, and he said this is the MD level decision, there is no further escalation channel. He said he is just for delivering the message, he is not decision maker, don't ask him the questions...My GOD, is this Mazda? Is this the right way to treat customer? even I buy a 5 dollar egg in supermarket and find it is broken, they will explain to me or change a new for me. It's a $50000 car, just a deliver of decision with no discussion...

Since then, Mazda never contact me. And I go to Penfold Burwood, their leadership is very nice and said they can do nothing but help contact Mazda again, I said OK. They said they will call me back the next Mon, but they didn't. I call back and they said they will contact me the next Mon, but till now, it's Jan, 2020 been more than 2 months, nobody ever contact me...

As customer, I feel we are really weak when dealing with big company like Mazda or Dealer like Penfold. I tried escalate to ACCC - Reference NO. REF28322XX, but I cannot proof that change of engine will cause safety issue or not. I try to contact lawyer but it's time consuming and expensive. I have no choice but get the brand new car which have engine fixing...Cause I need to send my son to school...

I will never, ever buy a Mazda product, never. I hope you good luck and never experience any issues with Mazda, if unlucky you meet issue, for sure, Mazda will not take care you.

This is a message from a Mom who have a son and just arrived at Melb, from a Mom who want her baby in a safe car instead of a brand new car but engine have issue. The experience above is 100% true, hope it is helpful for you.

PROS: 1. Value for money – car is packed with many features, leather seats, electronic gadgets, etc 2. Driving position is adjustable and stored for two drivers 3. Very good acceleration 4. The best is HUD – together with GPS system is fantastic. You do not have to look at navigation screen. 5. Control knob to move between applications – very easy, much better than Lexus touchpad. 6. Large boot covered with privacy screen CONS: 1. Bit thirsty – 10l average so far, but my wife is driving a lot of short trips during week. 2. Thick A pillar is bit obstructing driver view – I am only 180cm 3. On delivery ask dealer for detail explanation of various features – user manual is hopeless, due to the poor index – I found several missing references so far 4. Maps update – must be performed by user and after 3 years is quite expensive 5. Front door storage compartments are very low – why no elastic mesh to cover 6. Small control panel on right side of driver is positioned in very awkward position and has no extra light, which is sometimes problem in dark garage. The same apply for driver position selection buttons – they should be with light! 7. Cruise control is bit hard to set by driver

Giant steel space saver spare wheel, which weighs a ton.

Fruit:

Head up display on windscreen,

Stop / go cruise are great features.

The system cannot detect red traffic lights or car brake lights.

Electric tailgate, life was hard prior.

Auto fold mirrors.

Heated seats.

Deficiencies:

Bit disappointed at the all wheel drive, front wheels need to break traction before rears engage; I get torque steer on hard acceleration.

Side camera is pretty much pointless, aims straight downward, takes ages to find the button for it.

A 360 degree cam would have been a better idea.

Apple and android.. they keep promising it.. my ipod clashes with the MZD. (Needs Fimware update)

Lane keep is annoying on twisties, useful on a freeway - I switched it off.

Front seats could be more comfortable and cooled as well...

Walk away locking does not work after closing the tailgate unless walking past the front of vehicle.

Cruise control poor at keeping a constant speed except on ultra flat roads.

I have experienced 7kph over and under set speed regularly.(15kph extremities).

Bright-work around gear shift reflects the sun up underneath my sunglasses.

Sun visor does not extend to cover side window, again, sun on side of face.

Center armrest too low and too far back to be of any use.

Rear muffler heat shield is vibrating.

Summary:

Great looking, minimalist design.

CX-5 Drives very well, suspension is firm but that is how I prefer it.

Steering rack is slower than my Atenza 6 GJII wagon which this car replaced and I am still not used to that.

So much quieter on the road than the 6.

Stereo is an improvement too, 6 did not have a subwoofer....

No interior rattles or squeaks in any of our (3 so far) Mazdas.

Bike fits easily in back, car is much bigger inside than it looks.

6.8L/100 km average mixed driving.

CX5- quite noisy - although most Mazdas are! They have apparently increased The sound deadening in the under body. Our does feel a tad heavier- but it could just be my imagination. The soft touch interior is an absolute delight. Handling as expected from Mazda - tight and crisp - a real drivers car.

The adaptive cruise control works well, they have changed how it works. The Old system (in my Mazda 3) goes up and down in increments of 5- which can be a little annoying if you want to sit on odd numbers with the Speedo. The new improved system goes up in increments of 1 or 10 if you keep your finger on the set button.

Enjoyable sound system with Digital radio (although it can cut in and out in some areas) we have also noticed that the radio has randomly changed channels by itself (yep my car has also done this) so I think it's the system they use rather than something faulty. Can get a little frustrating when telling Mazda - as they want to hear it change before something can be done about it.

Ok top 2 tips:-

1. If you get white interior get it protected - the leather seems to take on every bit of dirt.

2. The soul red is an amazing colour - but smash repair places hate it - they say it's thier worst night mare as out actually has gold in the paint. ( I scratched the car and it's been a hassel to get it repaired!)

Werribee Mazda are great to deal with - best service and after care for your new car purchase.

I really like the head up display which looks like it is being projected on the front bonnet. Fuel consumption is as expected with around 10 litres per hundred km for city driving and 6 for distance driving.

So in summary, this is a really good car. It does cost more than comparable rivals like Hyundai but for what you get it is well worth the price. I would have no hesitation recommending this car.

Still a great car – My 2017 Mazda CX-5. It’s such an easy car to drive. Handles beautifully. I have the Akera and it has the safety features that make it so easy to drive and a very safe car. Love the heads up display. It shows GPS instructions, your speed and the speed of the road your on as it reads and displays road signs. I love it. Highly recommend it. … Read more

Uses a bit of petrol around town admittedly but highway driving is about 7.9 to 8.1. At the moment because I’ve just been doing short drives the last couple of months I’m using 10.1 per hundred on average.

After 4 years it’s been consistent 10.1 around town which is my primary driving. It’s super quiet in the cabin. And the interior after 4 years is still like new. The quality of this Mazda is superb.

While I would still thoroughly recommend this car, it doesn’t have a tyre pressure monitor, Apple car play (I added it on later), and sadly no 360 degree camera and no option to retro fit it.

I would still give it 5 stars.

Mazda CX-5 Akera Diesel – I have only had this car for 3 weeks I had to wait for 3 months. When I first sat in this car and oh my god I was in heaven on leather seats which are heated, the heads up display on the windscreen is fantastic you can see your speed you are travelling at as well as it reads the signs on the side of the road so you always know what speed to go,… Read more

lane departing means if you loose concentration the car will pull you back to the middle of you lane, the blind spot sector is great for changing lanes helps when a car is on you blind spot so you don't move until it is safe to do so. The features on this car are like living in luxury oh and the sun roof is just perfect it has made me feel young again. Go have a look it's is fantastic. The guys at Reynella Mazda are great service is perfect.

January 30th 2018 Update: What a little beauty Mazda CX-5 Akera Diesel

Performance is fantastic having a diesel you have so much pick up that when I first took off I was thrown back in my seat my words were WOW!!! The handling is just perfect so easy to drive and noise well there is none so quiet.

You have heaps of leg room so if you are tall no problems at all. The interior is so easy to use everything in arms reach so you don’t need to take your eyes off the road, well the heads up display is a god sense all to do with the Car instruments are right in front of you, you have beeps if you change lanes when another car is too close, safest car I have ever driven. In the back seats in the middle you have drink holders and a charge dock for all your and the kids phones and tablets.

This car is so reliable one push of the button and you off and away, and the running cost are really good to fill up of diesel at $1.25 a litre is $60 you will get about 700 for that depends how you drive sticking to all speed signs and you will get the best out of your car.

I purchased mine from Reynella mazda adelaide, my salesman name is lee just ask for him and he will give you a really good deal oh and don’t for get to mention my name and you will get an extra good deal. Happy looking

Very nice – Comfortable ride - good acceleration - spacious boot- interior a bit too much plastic and plastic chrome - comfy seats - good vision - sun roof creates wind noise when open but maybe that happens with all sun rooves as I have never had one before. Audio system ok but not intuitive  Show details

Mazda CX-5 Akera Next Gen 2017 Auto AWD Petrol it just might be the best mid sized SUV around – The driving experience overall is fantastic, I've averaged around 8.6 litres per 100km over 1500 km of city and country driving, not to bad, but a shame that Mazda didn't do a bit better on economy. It offers enough grunt to pass other vehicles safely and for regular driving but I don't think you could tow much with the Petrol version. The size is… Read more

great and it's just the right height for getting in and out easily. I love the heads up display it is a fantastic feature. Especially having the Sat Nav basics and the speed sign recognition in the heads up display. The seats are reasonably comfortable but the leather is creasing already on the seats and it seems very thin. I love the Soul Red Crystal colour and the car is gorgeous to look at both inside and out. If I was going to offer any advice on looks it would be replace the wheel arch plastic with body colour as it cheapens the look. When doing a hard turn the steeering wheel becomes very heavy as though the power steering isn't working, the only thing I can think of is perhaps it has something to do with the lane assist, my son and I both noticed it when turning at a tight round about.. The car wheels spray a lot of dirt onto the body and rear of the car, probably because the Akera 19" wheels are so large. I had Mazda install the front and rear mud flaps at the 1000km service to stop this but have found they make little if any difference as they are so small, so don't waste your money on them. One thing the sales person didn't know as I did ask about it, is when you are parking and the istop has turned off the engine, if you have your foot on the brake when you push the ignition off button, instead of turning off the car it will restart the engine, so remember to put on the park brake and take your foot off the brake pedal before shutting down the vehicle. The high beam has a delay of several seconds before coming on, which is annoying. I love how the LEDds are interactive and turn off just enough leds to not bother other vehicles while still giving great light ahead. Even on low beam the lights are really good. The voice control of the phone is difficult to use, I found it much easier on my 2009 Mazda 3. This CX-5 is quiet, offers a smooth ride, holds the road well, and has an impressive Bose sound system. There is plenty of leg and head room in all the seats and the cargo area is a good size. My 6'3" son has no problem sitting in the back. I have noticed that after the automatic door lock has activated if you pull over to let a rear passenger out they can't open the door until you unlock your doors from the front, not sure if this is a fixable fault, I will need to look into it.The safety features and extras like Lane assist, emergency break assist, blind spot warning, back window wiper, Sat Nav, and hands free phone operation just to name a few are great. The laser cruise control with stop and go function is amazing, I still put my foot over the break just in case it doesn't slow down with the car in front or stop on it's own but so far so good. The only issue is it does break hard, this could be a lot smoother. The CX-5 offers good visibility all around with the extra height and well designed windows. I like the left hand side and rear camera, it really helps with reversing and parking but I do wish this car had automatic park assist and Apple play. Overall I think this car is the best in its class, I did lots of research and drove lots of other mid size SUV's but I kept coming back to the Next Gen Mazda CX-5. It's fun to drive and very stylish with plenty of safety features at a reasonable price.

The steering is one of the things that gives the Mazda its unique feel on the road: it is quick and accurate at speed, and while it can weight up a little oddly at times – when you’re braking from speed and turning into an intersection, for example – it is generally very well sorted, and light enough at parking speeds to make easy work of those situations.
