Cheap, but not in the long run – Goes through brake pads and rotors every 25000K. MG states usual wear and tear. It brakes really harshly and chews up front tyres. Show details
Uncomfortable seat bolster – I have found the car in general to be pretty good. My only real concern is the driver seat base bolster digs into my hip and is very uncomfortable they're way to hard. Also has an annoying rattle not loud just annoying. Apart from that all good for a cheap car. Show details
Some interesting info about this car – We all know what the reviews are like about this car. Yes it's not a hot rod ..has 4 stage auto..yea yea. But read on for some features. Firstly if you have only an Android phone and you want the display and hands features in the car ( screen )system that apparently can't accommodate because it has Apple car play Well you can, simply buy an… Read more · 1
Android connect USB dongle from eBay and you're away. . So if you buy the core version...no need to worry. ( certainly, no need to spend 500 dollars on the core for the 2nd rate GPS ) Seat goes up and down..( don't be sitting in it at the time ) Good head height. Auto lights are good, Auto defrost is good, good heat and air-con. Indicators on the left
Ok, it has some exhaust/engine noise, I kinda like it that about it. You can also adjust the pitch on the headlights, even though the main lights are only halogen...cool running lights though. Doors automatically lock when you move off. Get the Excite for only a grand more than the Core..bigger nicer wheels, a better sound system unimpressive gps ( read above) ..better colour options. My MG3 is a good ride, comfortable, so far reliable...about 500k to a full tank.
Great for L Drivers! – Shopped around for an L Driver suitable hatchback and it was on average $4k cheaper than a 5yr old used Japan/Korean hatchback, most of which had over 30,000 on the clock and needed either new tyres and/or service and parts. Plus it came with apple car play/reverse camera,7 yr warranty, roadside assistance and capped price servicing...no brainer at this price point! Show details
Made cheaply – Good car, but cheaply made and there's a long wait to have it looked at when broken down (with no replacement car) Show details
Excellent value – The MG3 is a beauty when it comes to a compromise of value and spend! It has all the gadgets you would expect on a sub compacted car without the big price. Handling is excellent on country roads and performance is adequate for a small car. Interior space and boot huge for its pint size. A car I have had for four and a half years and hasn’t missed… Read more
a beat. Do yourself a favor and ignore any of the biased opinions on this site from people who expect Ferrari performance and Porsche handling along with Rolls Royce quality. They are just whingers!
Love my mg3 – Brought brand new a few months ago. I'm very impressed with it I drive 40mins to Work each way and have done 5000kms already not one problem. Fuel economy is great and the handling is good to. Yes it's built to a budget but it's done in a nice way.only thing is the head lights not that strong but I will get a light bar fitted. Show details
MG3 Excite Absolute Rubbish – Car broke down driving out of car yard when purchased. Back doors failed to open. Now 5 months later the steering is gone. The Service Centre at Brisbane Motorama Moorooka is ordinary at best. Show details
Get what you pay for – Great second car for the family. Mainly used it to run around and the occasional drive to the city. Brakes are a bit sensitive and sometimes hold, sometimes music drops out for .1 of a second (will raise this at the next service), not the most comfortable car with its seats, small motor and only 4 speed gearbox. BUT, if you can deal with those… Read more
things, then it’s not too bad. The tech in the car is up to date. Aircon is breezy, decent on fuel, love the Apple car play and when I compared to used cars on the market at $20k, it was a no brainer to get a brand new MG3 that has 7 year warranty.
Update - Just had the 1 year service, seems to be going well. Told the mechanics/service department about the issue with sound dropping out and they performed a factory reset on the head unit, have not noticed any issues with the music.
Low price shows – Had the MG 3 as a loan car First impressions from the outside was its pretty good looking sleek and well built . Once I stepped inside the cheap price showed For the price you really can't expect to much . Cheap looking interior all plastic The good : Power is pretty good for a small car Air conditioning is good Vision is good Has Apple… Read more
car play Big reverse camera/though a bit dull
The bad : Breaks really sensitive Air conditioner has bad smell So very cheap looking inside Multimedia screen is very dull When you put your foot down it leeches forward aggressively Seats uncomfortable Did I say really cheap looking The suspension is really crap every single bump in the road the cars bouncing around just unsettled really bad actually to the point of feeling uncomfortable and really annoying
Would I buy one ? Definitely not i think save a few more thousand and get a kia rio they are cheap and way better then the MG 3 . Even a older Toyota yaris would be way better then the MG3
Good turns bad at 13000Klms – Hard seats, hard suspension. Now a clunk sound in front suspension while turning. Apart from this all is well.Good paint, good everything.Good shopping cart.seats are a big disappointment, passengers complain about back pain after driving only a few city Klms. Show details
Great car – This is a great car Does everything I want and need it to do Fantastic sterio Easy to drive and park I've got so many nice comments by strangers Inside is roomy and comfortable I love it and look forwards to driving it every day cheap on petrol and its not too small looking Show details
Great Hatchback – My MG3 Excite is my second car (VW Passat as my first), and it's been great. It definitely comes with its limitations, such as acceleration and minimal features, but it does reflect its price. I do love the great handling, breaking, and suspension which makes it feel like a proper classic MG. The 1.5L engine is weak though, slow to accelerate, but… Read more
does deliver when needed. Another con would be the transmission, it is a little slow to change gears, and struggles to decide if it wants 2nd or 3rd gear on hills. The interior is its strongest feature, with good build quality, minimal but sleek design, great aircon, and plenty of leg and boot room. Owned it for nearly a year and have never had a problem with it.
My only bit of advice is, after 2 months it will perform much better than brand new. I was very disappointed for the first few weeks with the engine lag, but that soon disappeared after driving it for a while. Hope this helps. Highly recommend for a car of its price.

Value for money, – Pro’s - Price, 7 year warranty & 7 year roadside assistance, good seating, lively engine, cheap annual service cost, Con’s - speedometer old style, drum brakes on rear wheels, road noise insulation could be a lot better. Overall good value for money.
Great Value – We were looking for a replacement for our Suzuki Alto GLX. The year warranty and year roadside assist show that MG3 back their product. We went for a look when the dealership was closed and it certainly seemed like a step up from the Alto and the price made it hard to choose any of the alternatives on offer. We took it for a test drive and… Read more
picked ours up the following week. We have now had it for 6 months and it has been a great little car - plenty of room to hold 4 people and fishing gear with the back seats down. It isn't fast off the lights but nether was the Suzuki. The navigation system is good and unlike the Suzuki this car takes normal unleaded. We even got a refund on our insurance because the MG3 was cheaper than the Alto - we are happy with the purchase.
Great Little Runabout! – This car is zippy and totally suitable for a small family. Great for the work commute with low low fuel economy and parking is a breeze. Sensors and Apple car play make this well priced car up there in terms of technology for todays driver Show details
Not Happy – After picking up our brand new 2020 mg3 excite I had to return it the next day as the navigation/radio/Apple Pay wouldn’t work, it would switch itself off and on and jump between the radio and phone. I’ve lost count how many times I have taken the car back to the dealership to be told they don’t have an upgrade to fix it. I was also having… Read more
problems with the way the car runs, it’s an automatic transmission but very time I would stop at lights it felt like the car was going to stall and after 4 return visits to the dealership about this problem they replaced the whole muffler.
And twice since purchasing the vehicle in October 2020 we have had to call out road side service to get it started due to mechanical problems.
The only thing this car has going for it is it’s cheap on fuel.
Over all we are very very unhappy with this vehicle and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone
What a heap of Chinese junk – Bought a 2019 model brand new, should have know better after having bought one of the first Great Wall utes, 18 months in transmission problems, need new transmission control module, none in aus so 8 weeks till it comes from China, it gets fitted and then we find the problem was actually a loose transmission wire, 3 months after getting the car… Read more
back transmission problems again, car going into neutral when being driven. Contact the dealer, they no longer are authorised to fix mg, as central coast mg has taken over from eln mg, ok try and book the car in, the new dealers tell me that they haven’t yet received the diagnostic equipment from mg Australia to work on the cars , try and contact mg Australia, never get an answer, how much to trade it in and get something decent $8000,, don’t buy one.
Worst new car we ever bought – The 1.5 engine is vastly underpowered, makes the car go down the gears when you hit an incline, the engine starts to labour and you can hear the tappits making that tinny noise. After buying new we decided to trade it in to an MG garage who told me it was made in China and more or less what did I expect. They offered me $10k for the car Against a… Read more
26k i30, I paid $18,500 for the car 5 months earlier. Beware buying if you think it will hold its value, We ended trading it for a Ford Focus where we got $15k for it, we were glad to unload it . The MG Excite may have all the bells and whistles , however they forgot to put a engine in it that will do it justice
Fuel consumption – Got mg3 in november 2020 was using upto 13lph now its using 8.9 to 9.2 lph after taking the car back several times they acknowledge there is a problem. But they cannot find the problem so basically the dealer told they cant find the problem, so basically cant find a problem so bad luck so ive told them its not what i was promised i want a new car Show details
Fantastic car with great torque! – Mainly local runs, one long run last week, amazing cornering, great on hills, just like driving a sports car! Tops 140 Klms with no effort . Can see this as a car of the future in car rally’s Show details
Good little car for the price but – Bought an MG3 Excite in November 2018. It is a great little car and for under 20 grand it's definitely one of the cheaper cars on the market. There are some issues though. A squeek comes from the brakes everytime you put the brake on and then lift it off again. I asked the MG service department on the 10,000 and 20,000km service but they said it… Read more
was just a build up of brake dust, but the problem came back after about a month after they said they fixed it. I took it to my local mechanic and he said that they use an inferior metal on their brakes so this is what causes the noise. That sounded more likely. Also the windscreen wipers or the windscreen glass have an annoying shudder when you put them on. Have tried everything to fix the problem but it still continues. And the service department is not great at all. Very disappointed in the two services I have had with them, but this could just be the location I take the car to. I now take it to my mechanic and no problem and great service. Otherwise it is a good car for general driving and good on fuel and a pretty comfortable ride. Just a few issues MG need to iron out to be more attractive to potential buyers.

Don’t do it! – Good luck to anyone who takes the risk of buying one of these! I bought one just over 18 months ago and have had nothing but trouble: Faulty tyre sensor, Leaking door seals, Faulty exhaust (needs to be replaced - still waiting on part since 01/12/2020, Rust around windscreen, Infotainment system keeps going to a black screen if someone calls So… Read more
loud on highway you can’t hear the people in the back seat and a loud constant rattle, I have to take cruise control off to get up hills as looses so much power....
All of the above have been confirmed by either my mechanic or the service department I spoke to MG who “thanked me for my feedback”
MG3 is it worth it? – First off the block, if your looking for the review based on “bad car because it’s cheap” then you need to look at a more expensive car.. If you want a real review, then keep reading... We have taken ownership of the MG3 Excite. For $18690 it was a steal! The motor does feel a little unrefined, but personally I feel it adds to the appeal of the MG3. I drive and hire many cars over the year for work, and use this time to “find” my next car, I took a chance on the MG3 and have to say... it is just the most fun I’ve had in a little car in a very long time!
The build quality feels great, yes there is ALOT of plastic, but I’m saying that, it sounds solid to touch, driving a STX which too has a lot of plastic, seems to feel somewhat cheap, which I do not feel in the MG3.
Braking is great, not too sensitive, but you feel like you can rely on it.
Back seat is comfortable and leaves you with plenty of head room and leg room without shuffling front seats around.
There is plenty of go in town, forever checking speed as the MG3 seems to aggressively go from 0 to 60 in less time it takes to skip a track you don’t like..
On delivery there was a small squeak coming from the plastic around the instrument cluster, but that’s sorted itself out..
This is a great little car, and I have not driven anything else close to this price that gives me the same comfort or feel of quality.
I have felt less impressed in the BMW X3 or Mazda CX3 Which mind you... is not in the same class, as the Swift or I30 is, even then, the MG3 beats the rivals hands down.
What I would like to add is cup holders, there is nothing in the doors for the back, you have bottle holders in the doors of the front and a cup holder with a square thing you can loose a cup in, but then, I guess we should be driving and not drinking coffee
Ongoing issue with Air conditioning – Within one week the Air conditioning failed and upon calling the dealer I was made to wait one week to get a booking to take vehicle back. The dealer inspected and advised me that their was no gas.The gas was filled and no mention as to whether a leak was present.Six weeks later and the same issue has arisen and now I have to wait 5 days for a booking to take back. Not very happy! Show details
