Absolutely the best – I was talked into buying a bagless machine a few years ago even though I was sceptical, I reckoned that tipping dust out of a plastic container into a plastic bag for disposal (living in a high rise unit you cant just empty the stuff down the waste chute) would cause clouds of dust and I was right, so I went back to the tried and tested bag system… Read more

and there was a promotion on the Meile so lashed out and got one.

So glad I did as this machine is absolutely fantastic.

It is powerful but has different speeds to suit every situation. It has a series of filters so there is no chance of any escaping dust or smells, but like any cleaner these filters must be changed or cleaned to keep the machine happy. This is easy as each box of bags comes with new filters anyway.

The bags are a little expensive but hold a lot and self seal very well, there is a cheaper model Meile which uses cheaper bags but I reckon the extra money for the dearer machine and bags pays dividends in having a very clean and dust free house.

Another Miele masterpiece – Having had a variety of vacuum cleaners over the years including upright, barrel and even a water bath type unit I decided to purchase a quality barrel cleaner that had efficient dust collection was easy to use on carpeted stairs and had fittings that were unlikely to fall off or disconnect whilst in use. I found a Miele S5 model at a respectable… Read more

price and am more than happy with the unit. It is easy to use, has various vacuum settings, the telescopic tube fits positively and yet is easy to disconnect if you have to use on window frames etc. Best of all the exhaust air from the cleaner does not exit from the end of the barrel rather at an angle from the rear of the unit making it perfect to carry the cleaner up stairs while you clean and enabling you to sit the barrel on its tail without interrupting the exhaust air.

I have now had the unit for 2 1/2 years and it is meeting all my needs. Yes the replacement filter bags are a little dearer than some other brands but they are quality bags and easy to replace. My Vax cleaner is now relegated to the garage, My Rainbow cleaner is now relegated to the museum as it is just too heavy to drag around as it fills up with sludge. I hope this is helpful information to those in search of a barrel cleaner.

Good on hard floors – I've had this cleaner for about 4 years now and it has never had a problem working. However, the degree of cleanliness varies from the type of material it is cleaning. On hard floors - tiles and wood floors it is great. Great suction, efficient cleaning action, can't complain. On carpets it is not so good. On short hard wearing carpets it is… Read more

reasonably good at getting the dirt and rubbish out. On medium to full carpets it is probably like all the others. It will get surface dirt off but nothing further down the pile.

I have a Vax Shampoo cleaner that I use to really clean the carpet afterwards. It picks up the dirt, sand and hairs that the Miele can't. The big difference is that the Vax has a rotary head with bristles on it - great for agitating the carpet. Every time I use it, the water comes out black with dirt sand and hairs that the vacuum cleaner misses.

The next cleaner I get will probably be a rotary brush cleaner type that agitates the carpet as it cleans.

The Miele is good, but I think Technology is now capable of producing something better than just sucking up the loose dirt.

It needs to agitate and wrestle loose all the dirt first in the carpet and then remove it. As I said before, on hard wearing floors its fine.

Already 13 years with me. Its performance and durability are amazing – I purchased it in Hong Kong in 2007 and was never and ever disappointed with its performance. The bundled heads are very handy with purposes built to cover general cleaning. Now living in a house in Australia. It still does the job well for me. The only down side is the power cord length isn't long enough to cover the whole house if you start… Read more

Worst vacuum cleaner I have ever bought – Worst vacuum cleaner I have ever bought. Within weeks the spring that closed attachment compartment just fell off, next when I changed the vac bag the entire mechanism that holds the bag in place came off with the bag, I never noticed at the time & it got thrown out with the bag. Great Vacuum Very poor after sales – This Vacuum was great while it worked but it only lasted 4 months past warranty. 2 years and 4 months is not good enough. Only ever used Miele bag. The Miele repair rep said before looking that we probably used cheap bags, that's why the motor burnt out, but he had to eat his words when he actually bothered to look. Will not buy another Miele vacume cleaner – I bought this product in June 2011 and it just stopped working suddenly with normal usage. I was the only person to use the machine and I was not rough with it, nor was it used for anything other than normal dust around the home. No cleaning of pet fur for example. I also always changed the filters whenever I changed the bag and I did not over fill it. Very disappointed as it was an expensive machine. The sucking power. Bits and pieces started falling off after 12 months of regular use. And just suddenly stopped working at 3 years.

Awesome, would not change...just upgrade if necessary – This little vacuum cleaner just goes and never gives up. As long as you keep the filters clean and change bags it just works relentlessly. They 'leak' when overfilled. the original bags just keep filling and… Read more

Indestructable vacuum cleaner – I've had this vacuum cleaner for about 12 years or more now. It's a great cleaner. On highest speed it will lift the carpet. Best barrel vacuum cleaner I've ever owned – A very good vacuum cleaner, made in Germany. Excellent suction with speed control. price.

Tools are stored on board the vacuum under a cover. The extendible wand is metal and may be removed so the hose can be attached directly to the vacuum head or tools for close work. May be obsolete as I bought it two years ago.

Can't really think of any negatives other than the wheels are so good that the vacuum can move away from you when it is on smooth surfaces and you're trying to switch it on/off or rewind the cord. Vacuum cleaner is not cheap and neither are the bags but you get what you pay for and Miele have done an excellent job with the design and manufacturing of this model S5211.

Great vacuum but upgrade to using a turbo head! – I love this vacuum however I would definitely suggest buying the turbo head to go with it. the strength of the suction I don't feel that I'm sucking up the dirt deeper in the pile. Overall it is versatile with the all the different attachments. Another thing to keep in mind, mine has plastic fittings and it broke on the handle which made it extremely sharp on my hands so I've had to use strong tape to avoid cutting myself. I have no idea how this broke. It is my third Miele so I recommend these vacuums. Hope this review helps!

Advice on cheaper bags – I have had this fantastic Miele vac for 6 years and made a critical mistake .... checked out by Godfreys repairere and it needs a new motor, the cost would be around $350 !! Hard lesson learnt, what saved me $10 has now cost me a great vacuum. I'll be buying another Miele tomorrow, I only wish you could still buy the S5211 :)

Its sucks than VAX – Advantage: Yeap I have one of these German baby for 3 years now as a gift. For three years I've using it all I can say is that ITS SUCKS better than my previous VAX Turbo vacuum. wanting to fly. Its lighter than VAX, you can handheld Miele with your for spot clean. Accessories are neatly kept with the vacuum so you can swap straight away.

Disadvantage:

Cannot be cleaned internally as DIY (it uses a special screw, i think more of Allen's type)

Genuine accessories are expensive (well like other German products).

Cannot shampoo carpet like VAX.

Refill bags are quite expensive.

Light Blue colour seemed old style Retro (Dislike Personally)

The best I've had! – I brought a Miele S5211 a year ago and it's the best I have ever owned. Excellent – This is easy to use with excellent suction. Having the accessories with the unit is far easier than other vacuums I have had because you can't lose them and they are always close by. The only thing that would make this better is a longer cord but an extension cord does the job.

Great little vac – After using a basic elcheapo vacuum cleaner for a few years and lugging around an old heavy 2nd hand one for a few years before that, I loathed vacuuming as a tedious and tiring chore, so I decided it was time to go for a better quality one. As I wanted to buy in a bit of a budget I looked at the lower price range in the better quality brands. … Read more ·  1

The sales guy at Good Guys was really helpful for me choosing which sort of cleaner and explaining between bagged and bagless types. He suggested best bagged = Miele, and best bagless = Dyson. For a budget, Miele seem to have more options for price ranges than Dyson.

I decided to go for a bagged cleaner this time, after being fed up with getting pretty much covered in dust each time I emptied the bagless one we had. For someone with allergies I now think bags can give an extra protection against setting off some allergies, providing they have a good hold on the dust enclosed. Miele bags are solid and strong. I would have chosen a hepa filter as well, because of allergies, but this little Miele has a really good filter system anyway. (The previous cheap vac had a hepa, but was really not good quality). The bags are strong and although perhaps a bit expensive to replace, I decided my allergy prevention was worth that little extra to add now and then. (5 bags per pack for approx $20).

This little vacuum works a treat and the light, aqua blue colour was just for fun to brighten what had previously been a dull and unenthralling bore of a chore to me. Now, I whisk through the vacuuming with a spring in my step like I'm in a 1950's advertisement, and without allergies being aggravated afterwards. I can then get on with what else I actually want/need to do with my day (which is more than housework).

Even though this is not specifically an allergy filter vacuum it works very well. I have found it suitable for my allergies and it can be used also with dustmite spray routines for mattresses etc, if anyone is wondering about allergies/prevention etc.

The suction is excellent, and has various settings. Too strong on high setting for a laminate floor or rugs, but can turn it down a notch or two and it still does a great job.

There are several levels of the filtering system.

The vacuum is easy to use and is not too heavy.

The suction is excellent. Our lounge room rug has been given a new lease of life and a newer shaggy pile rug is really easy to keep looking good.

There is also a long power cord which is really handy for getting around instead of having to unplug too often.

Am sold on Miele vacs and would definitely buy Miele again.

Having a cleaner that cleans without an effort is great! I love this little Miele! Excellent suction. Range of settings for suction. Can use on rugs/laminate floors with lower suction but still with excellent cleaning capacity. Really cleans thoroughly. Not an effort. Not heavy to lug around. Good on the budget. Lower entry level on the vacuums available by Miele, but a really good one for general use. Nice colour, looks good. Doesn't have specific allergy filters, but filter system is excellent anyway. Great price for such a good little cleaner. Long power lead. Only that bags will cost extra to replace periodically but all bagged cleaners have some of that added cost.
